      Congrats. Have you ever used a grappling dummy? Right now I'm using one to get 1000+ reps drilled on many of the fundamentals to close the skill gap for when I can return to regular class. I'm hoping to develop my skills to have much more success against the higher ranks in a shorter period of time and already have a lot of rolling experience but just have never had the time, partners, or resources to get a lot of repetition for drilling until I got my dummy.

    I let both lower and higher belts get positions on me in order to train the stuff I'm currently working on. If someone feels disrespected by that, they should tell me, so that I can explain the reasons for doing so - or they could just leave their big ego outside the gym :)

    • @returnfreedom
      @returnfreedom 3 роки тому +3

      oh shut up about "ego" Everyone has it, its rampant in jiujitsu. It is sort of disrespectful when another lets you get into position (without explaining yourself before rolling). On days Im ready to test myself and push, the last thing I want is for someone to give something up just cause Im a lower belt. It is sometimes a cop out for higher belts who are getting out classed by a lower belt also, you could be passing etc and they give it up, with an excuse "I wanted to be in that position". I say, communicate before the roll so we all know whats going on.

  • @gickygackers
    @gickygackers 3 роки тому +4

    Blue to purple belt is hard because a lot of purple belts are held back from becoming brown and black when they KNOW that they will compete. There are a lot of purples who can tap black belts but pretty much no blue belts that can do the same. This is ok and respectable, do what you need to do as a coach to win. But let us not pretend that this happens.

    not in a disrespectful way
    in a way that benefits both of you
    instead of just finishing off everybody that you’re a lot better than
    that’s silly
    Matter fact I will try to roll only with higher belts that have a heart
    care about your progress

    Unless you're absolutely crushing the other person, you can't get mad at them letting you get control. If you can't consistently submit and dominate a person after getting control of them, then it is you who needs to put away the ego and start improving.
    And even then, perhaps they just want to practice getting out of an inferior position?

    Dont want to disappoint guys that are upperbelts, but I come from the 15 year ngi grappling, 2 years gi blue belt, each time I roll with purples, of course they submit me, but from rushing with their pure atlhleticism and explosive speed.
    I never got an opportunity to have technical exchanges. And when it happend, like twice, I got the best of em and they reverted back to their pure explosive speed and athleticism.
    I got me thinking, is this what the BJJ purple belt is all about, speed, explosiveness, athleticism, conditioning ? Man, if that is it, I'll go join a crossfit gym and jack my body and come back, one of our grappling student is doing that exactly, cause like me, he realized purple belters were that fast, that explosive and that athletic.
    I'm disappointed at this point.
    Strangely, Roy Dean's students are among the most technical purples I viewed so far.

    For the most part I dominate Purple Belts my age , younger guys including some white belts (wrestlers and whites with a year of training) give more trouble than my peers of the same age.
    I'm a Blue and have been for a long time. I don't feel like I'll ever be a legit purple if I cant easily finish a 4 stripe white -wrestling background or not.

    What is this idea of being disrespected by being aloud to take a position come from? This is just ridiculous to me. I’m a 42 year old mid level blue belt. After about 4 or 5 rolls in a class I always ask my new opponent if he/she has any particular positions they want to start at. I ask this to the brown belts and lower. I almost find it more respectful. It’s hard to get people at more advanced levels in positions that you would like to work from with that skill. I tried to hold down one of our professors in side control the full 5 min round. I only was able to keep him in side control no more than 5 secs, then we reset. I felt that it was an honor. The next time I had a higher level white or good blue belt in side control I could do better than before. There are huge advantages to isolating positions, particularly bad positions and working out from them.
