Exactly, but it's not even an emulation. Because in theory this could actually be emulated because it is digital. So it's an interpretation, of a digital emulation ,of analog tape. lol
Can you send me a recording to test the difference because I just have difficulty hearing the difference. Wearing ndh 30 headphones. It must be super subtle.
This is so cool! We use a Machine Head for some of our music (the actual hardware). This is groundbreaking and really interesting. Game-changer, for sure! ❤
Sounds like Hardware was a tad warmer in the low to mid range but the plugin gave it a shine around 2-3k letting the vocal cut through more…. Hmmmm they both sound good
by chance have you ever compared it to the RND 542 or Roger Mayer 456 ? I've been thinking of those two and never heard of this unit. Plugin looks cool tho.
Likely the greatest difference is that the hardware (digital I/O) would be fixed point DSP, limited in sample rate, and 24 bit dithered I/O (I guess the output could also clip). While the software supports higher sample rates at floating point (32 or 64?) DSP.
A has a little more fidelity and is a little more musical. The low end sounds fuller, the snare sounds more snappy and the vocals sound a little clearer.
Is it me or is the plugin distorting more in a harsh way on the peaky 'neptunes daughter' line. Compare the first instance of it on both takes on decent monitors. Hardware seems like it smooths it out better.
I barely hear a difference. Maybe the kick in A is a bit punchier and the mix has a little bit more emphasis around 400-500 Hz compared to B. Aside from that which is very little, I find no difference. Sounds terrific!
Thanks so much for doing this, I'm really going back and forth on trying to find the hardware or not. One concern though is I really don't think A and B would null that well, they sound quite noticeably different to my ears (admittedly I'm on my Airpod Max rn and not in the studio)? A just seems to have the roundness that everyone wants from tape, takes some edge off the high end, does something to the transients etc. What did you use to test the null? I'd highly recommend putting them through Deltawave or similar. Any chance you can make the high res files available?
@@makebelievestudio for some reason my reply from yesterday disappeared? I think the two are fairly audibly different right? Any chance you can share the raw WAV files you nulled? I'll likely buy the plugin either way but I'm trying to make some tough decisions on the best tape saturation options, plugins aren't cutting it so looking into options like the Zulu or even real tape.
@@TheMattTricks well this doesn’t sound anything like tape nor does the machine head. But it does sound good. You may want to watch our video on what it is. We can ask the person who provided the files for permission to post them.
@@makebelievestudio not sure what you mean, the exact thing the Machine Head is famous for is replicating some of the pleasing aspects of tape without needing to maintain a real machine. Everyone is trying to do is get similar saturation, compression, smoothing etc that tape is admired for digitally. The point here is that from the audio in this video it sounds like the hardware achieves that a fair bit more reliably than the plugin. The reason I'd love to hear the full res WAV files is to be able to put it under the microscope a little more as I'm currently comparing about 10 different options for my own studio and would loooove for the Mix Head plugin to truly approximate the Machine Head as it appears to still be one of, if not the, best on the market and a genuinely viable plugin option would be insanely useful.
I never listened or work with original, so just the sound comparison on my phone's speqker: second one is more hallow in low ends and a little harsher in high ends. so first one is better sweets my ears.
i would say A hardware B plugin. There are sharper transients in the B, specially the "SSS" region in the vocal which is usualy a form of digital precise processing. The A sounds a little more smeared and whooly, the " analog vibe". There is also more compression going on in the A version.

@@makebelievestudio , the difference was subtle, but the top end and bottom end sounded better.
