  • This is my full review of the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark ii. For a camera that was released in 2015, it is still great for 2019. This is a very viable vlogging camera that did not get much attention from vloggers. This size is so amazing and inconspicuous for street photography, engagement photography, vlogging, and so much more. Since it is 2019, this camera is due for an update, but we’ll see if Olympus will announce an OM-D E-M5 Mark iii in the near future. Until then, enjoy this review and anticipate what Olympus has in store for all of us in 2019.

    This camera is well overdue for an update yet this is THE BEST review on UA-cam. Very down to earth and real world tested. I’ve had this camera and have already sold it. I regret selling it because it was such a great camera despite all those issues you’ve mentioned. No point in buying it new now since an update is expected to be announced (fingers crossed).

      Thank you!!! I'm praying they will drop it at NAB this year. Also, I just acquired the 14-150 mark ii, but then they dropped the 12-200mm recently and I'm like...whhhhhhhhhhyyyyyyyyyyy?!!!!!! That would be the perfect vacation lens. It'll be okay for vlogging at night, but a great lens for day time use.

    Jerry Joseph below already told you a lot of useful information about this camera. I owned it since released and I LOVE this camera so much more then any other I own, including a Panasonic GX9, but you have to understand this camera was presented in 2014 and the processing power to do simple things is not there: it is slow to write stuff even on very fast cards and the timelapse is toned down: the EM1MkII which came two years later is much more powerful and can do a lot of things the EM-5MkII can't effortlessly so we will probably have to wait for the next iteration to get a lot of things. I'm telling you about the EM1 because price and market wise it is closer to the GH5/4 you are used to. This camera can make good video and it's small enough for comfortable vlogging with amazing stabilization, but it's much more at home taking pictures: let's hoe the next EM5 iteration will expand it's video features.
    Another important thing I noticed you are still in the standard mode: I STRONGLY recommend you to enable the superpanel to control all the features of the camera from the screen in a much easier way then to dip in to the camera menu. There are a lot of videos showing you how to enable superpanel in the olympus menu. I also higly recommend you to check RobTrek channel: I think he is the best around to learn how to use Olympus menus.
    About ISO/WB button, by default it's the lever you customized to Still/video: since you did that it is obvious you have to remap one of the buttons on the top to switch the two wheels to control, like one with the red dot which now is useless to you because it did what the lever now does.

    Live view boost is useful when shooting in dark conditions. The EVF show your exposure. The EVF will look dark in a dark room. The boost will make the EVF usable in the dark. It is useful in conjunction with a speed light.

    Live view boost is used a lot by Scuba Divers. Olympus is one of the only manufacturers who consider underwater photography in their designs and the live view boost makes seeing the screen under water easier.

    Oh ya! About the live view boost, I only find it very useful when I do studio shoot. Reason is I want to eliminate all the ambient lights. By turning the exposure all the way down, it will not affect the live view preview. That way I can still check my framing and my focus. 😊

    • @mrheng562
      @mrheng562  5 років тому

      Mohd Firdaus , great advice! At that point, you can check the first few shots for proper exposure. Set all the flashes to manual output and exposure is maintained the whole shoot. Unless you change subject’s distance from light source.
      I did that at my PowWow Pizza shoot. The ceiling is white, so I used that as my bounce surface. Got pretty good diffusion. 😁👍

    Hey! You can save the raw photos when you use the time lapse mode and convert it to video file in post. That way you’ll have more than just a 4K footage. 😉 Another thing is if you like to stick to a certain exposure settings, you can create your own settings called MySet.

    • @mrheng562

    Hey you can have AUTO iso in manual, but you have to turn it on. its buried in the settings. There is also an option for the camera to provide power to your external mic, perhaps you need to turn that off for your studio mic - but I'm not sure. I agree with the lack of an auto ISO button, drives me crazy. I used the switch to change the functionality of the shutter/aperture buttons to WB, ISO. but that won't work for you since you've committed it to video. It would be the WORST if they put the audio jack on the bottom for me. I always run a grip. I guess they could put the jack on the grip though, they have a headphone jack on there already. My biggest complaint is that the dials are too loose, I have it on a strap no case a lot and my body changes the settings! The ability to disable the dials would be a good firmware fix since they aren't going to change the dial physically now.

    • @mrheng562
      @mrheng562  5 років тому

      Jerry Joseph , you had some great suggestions. But, I still can’t Auto ISO when in manual video mode and I’ve tried all the settings. The headphone jack on the bottom would be bad for body grips for sure, and if they do for that, then they can add a headphone and audio input on the grip. I’m kind of bummed that they didn’t have headphone jack on the body and need the grip for that feature. But, I understand this a stills first camera. Video is second priority. That makes perfect sense on Olympus part.
      With the released specs of the Panasonic S1, I’m not sure if I want to get that now. I’m much more curious about the EM5iii. Such exciting times for camera nerds. LOL!!!

      @@mrheng562 You can actually sort of work around that. Set the auto ISO to all, select M mode, and hit the REC button to record video. Now the camera recods video with Auto ISO. There is a problem with this, however, since on M and Auto ISO, exposure compensation is not accessible in photo mode (at least I haven't gotten it working on M Auto ISO). Then again, once you start recording, exposure compensation is accessible through the touch screen. Truly a weird implementation :D
      You can also use this workaround on shutter priority also in order to control ISO before recording.

    • @mrheng562
      @mrheng562  5 років тому

      Nik, that is such a weird way to implement the option. I only noticed that I was able to record in M mode after doing a firmware update to 4.0. I'm gonna skip the 4.1 update that just came out. The hardest part about auto exposure is back lighting. Most cameras have a very hard time with that, which is why exposure compensation is helpful. Thanks for the advice!

    Hello, not sure whether this comment about wb/iso still makes sense given the time that has passed since the video release, but in my case lever position 1 is set as yours probably (aperture+exposure) and the lever 2 changes both dial buttons to wb/iso as you wanted. However you assigned lever 2 to video. You can set video to another button, but there is video recording button from default with its typical red recording dot symbol. I guess you need to see all the settings, in this case you can move video to default hdr function. In my case the iso/wb dials for lever 2 position were set from the beginning. I find assigning the lever for changing both dials effective because you influence comfortably two functions with one move. And are you satisfied with 14-150? I am having it and I have a feeling that it works better in anything else than its original purpose: the landscape. I am having problems with light abberations and sharpness. Not sure if you still have this camera, but I'm sure you can change the dials to ISO and WB changing the lever by the EVF?

    • @stuartnelson3202
      @stuartnelson3202 4 роки тому +1

      To the query just after 11 minutes I mean. You can toggle the lever down and then back up after to return it to Aperture & Shutter etc.

    • @mrheng562
      @mrheng562  4 роки тому +1

      I prefer my dials to be shutter and aperture since those get changed to most while shooting manually.

      Me too, sorry if I'm bad at explaining, in case anyone else reads this.
      Just thought it might be might be useful to people who might want to still use (say) HDR, you don't have to assign anything to get this toggle as it's already preset to the lever (assuming you haven't reassigned the lever to something else, although I'm not sure if you can assign the lever as never tried it).
      I think it took me months to realise what the lever did... 😂

      Thank you. Most of my prayers are answered in the latest release of the Olympus OMD EM iii. Sadly, the video features are no attractive enough for a hybrid shooter like me. 😔
      I will wait for a Panasonic GH6 instead.

      MrHeng562 Yes it seems to have disappointed many especially with the build. Some of your photos are stunning can a new camera actually assist you further? I would think it most unlikely. Again Thankyou for a great review and further some great examples of your photography.

    • @mrheng562
      @mrheng562  4 роки тому +1

      Warren Fox , thank you very much! It meant a lot because it took forever to edit this video.
      Regarding photography skills and new cameras, veteran photographers know that it is all about the user. Not so much the camera body. 😉👍
      The problem with many beginners is thinking that the gear is what makes photography good. An amazing camera in the hands of a novice will still capture just good enough images. I think I’m just preaching to the choir here. 😂😂😂

    • @wazzazv614
      @wazzazv614 4 роки тому +2

      MrHeng562 not preaching. Good remarks. I am in my 60 s now and still I am. Novice. But wow so many tools and options and yet sometime I look at pre- 20th century photos and amazed at the quality. Have an em1 and a em5 Mark 2 arriving next week. I don’t think a larger pixel or newer camera can possibly help me. I think composition is so much more important and I am still not there. You have a good eye and obviously love your work and Thankyou for allowing the rest of us to see it and your reviews. A lot of work for sure.

      Warren Fox , you are too kind good sir. I’m constantly practicing daily with my phone to stay sharp. I experiment very often and learn from lots of failures. Trial and error is how I personally learn best. 🤣
      If you don’t mind, I’d love to see some of your work. 🙂
