  • Invasive mussels remain a serious threat to B.C. waters. In response, the Province of B.C., BC Hydro, conservation organizations and others, are stepping up - increasing efforts and funds to protect local waterways and keep the invasive species out of B.C. For its part, the Okanagan Basin Water Board (OBWB)’s Okanagan WaterWise program is getting ready to launch its annual Don’t Move A Mussel campaign.
"(Before the pandemic) we had 12 inspection stations, we had 64 inspectors, and last year we had 6 [inspection stations] and we had 32 inspectors. And that's what the funding equals right now so we're a little disappointed about that, being that the threat is so much closer than it was," says Water Board Chair Blair Ireland, referring to last fall’s discovery of quagga mussels in Idaho.
