criminally underrated artist Clark has major and unique talent that will be appreciated for a very long time thank you for all this music, this is some of the deepest I've ever heard.
this score seems very fitting for the theme of the movie. melancholic, evocative, tense... such an amazing tune, along with the other tracks on the album. 🔥🔥
Si ser un gran compositor fuera delito, Clark tendría cadena perpetua... No esperaba menos del señor Clark, a mí gusto, esta es una de sus mejores canciones. 11/10.
@@axoodle written in 1969 "groupie (superstar)" was far less impactful than it would become later-at this stage delaney and bonnies version employed a very jazzy/bluesy, gospel-like tone in a fairly jaunty key signature that causes it to feel akin to an empowering breakup song. this was likely intentional as the band was primarily session musicians-not writers. it was a few years later that the Carpenters would cover the track after seeing bette midler perform it on the tonight show. richard carpenter mercifully reworked the lyrics to be less suggestive and transcribed the tune to a lower, minor key to suit the subject and slowed the tempo to suit karen's performance singing while drumming-this while adding a bit of his own classical and jazz sensibilities to the arrangement-leaving only the refrain in a true major key. these changes truly worked to their advantage no longer did the track appear as a sacchrine ode to fuck boys and the women they take advantage of. now almost a proper lament "superstar" became an iconic reflection of the decadance of the 60's and the failure of the counterculture movement told over a vague love story. it emulates the kind of orchestration and pagentry not typically associated with pop tunes of the time-evoking a late to the party disappointment. a feeling that something could have been different. this likely spoke to the sentiments of the time when thousands of young men died, thousands more vietnamese, dozens of young artists and almost every single progessive politician with a platform. and have been a channel for richard to express his frustration having "missed" the 60s-a decade im not sure his sensibilities were suited for. superstar was the name given to the experimental documentary about karen karpenters ED. and understanding karen's mental health battles it also takes a bit of a subversive meaning. that said by far i have the most experience with the sonic youth version as it appeared in jerry hsu's skate video-while being very aaesthetic in its application by sonic youth. its lack of proper arangement might be semi-intentional to evoke austerity and to accentuate other dramatic elements later in the tune-however i find it drags through the slow sections and sometimes feels less melancholic than it does bored. but it did make a name for sonic youth in a way-it was the new guard submitting for inspection. something SY would hate but it absolutely is them demonstrating where they came from and where they planned to go hope you enjoyed the book.
I just love that you never know what youre gonna get, dancefloor banger? arty minimalism? or something soulful with synths like this, wonderful.
I don’t. I want bangers. Not this.
