3 DREAMCAST's inside & out, do YOU have an rev 0?.

- ATTENTION PAL / UK Console owners! This video refers mainly to US / NTSC & JAP / NTSC Dreamcast consoles. The manufacture, distribution and revisions for PAL units was much different in UK and other PAL regions. From what I was able to find, there were no PAL consoles branded under rev 0. BUT some people have claimed
to be in possession of even rev 1 Dreamcasts (PAL) that do in fact have the metal fan / heatpipes cooling system. As such I cannot offer any claim or evidence either way, simply check your own console and see!
I was curious after reading a post by daytonausa on a couple forums if
I to had a Rev0 DREAMCAST. These are the first run of Dreamcast that had
metal fans / heat-sink and metal cooling pipes! These are made of sturdier
more dependable components as they run cooler and have better quality
Japanese GD rom drives.
I am by NO MEANS and expert in such matters and am simply relaying info I
recently acquired in forum posts and Googling, further details and verified info are solely up to YOU to track down. Hope you like this video, feel free to comment, correct, rate, favorite or do a video response!
Relevant links and better detailed info with descriptions and pictures!

Mine is Oct 1999, has a Japanese disc drive, but plastic fan housing… it’s different than all of these!!
I strongly recommend to open the disc lid before revoming the top of the dreamcast. Or you may break the lid switch.
Been down the UA-cam rabbit hole with Dreamcast videos tonight ... but yeah, my PAL console is a Rev 1 (there was no Rev 0 in PAL regions) but I have the black plastic fan with the Yamaha drive. The Samsung drive, made in China, is less desirable and if you’re in the market for a Dreamcast in 2020, try and find one with the Yamaha drive that’s made in Japan. You quite rightly pointed out that it’s the more reliable of the two, however while the Rev 2 you have with the Samsung drive has no metal casing (due to the removal of components that enabled back ups to run), there are Rev 1 PAL units (and US units) with Samsung drives with the full metal assembly beneath it. But yeah, look out for those Yamaha drives people. And, to tell what Revision you have, just look on the bottom of the console - on the silver sticker, next to your region, there’s a circle with a number in it; that’s your revision number.
i have 2 rev 0 pal dreamcasts complete with piping, heatsink and metal fan housing, va0 on motherboard also and different voltage disc drive from va1 models, as shown in this video, apparently only 1% of pal dreamcasts were rev 0, but 100% defo do exist
I recently came across a pal unit with metal fan and Yamaha unit. It was a lunch model (Italian), made in Indonesia.
i'm sure i have all 3 revisions,since i have about 20 Dreamcasts...lol. Great video Rob!
Very informative, it's nice to see all the revisions side-by-side. Thanks for making this!
Well worth doing and most Dreamcast issues are an easy fix so I want to mention it in the next video. I make the worst tutorials ever (this camera does not help) plus my lack of technical skills but I think it will still be of use to some.
Another strange thing is my rev 0 is so quiet compared to the 1 and loads games and loading points way faster. My rev 1 takes about 20 secs to load me into the pso lobby . The rev 0 takes about 5 seconds.
When the macro lens was attached, I was not looking at the screen and I thought, for a moment, I was without my glasses.
Revision 0 and 1 are the models to get. I wouldn't recommend Revision 2. I heard those ones are more prone to dying. I remember someone sent me a Revision 2 on Ebay and it died while I was playing Resident Evil Code Veronica. I repaired it by tweaking the laser and I'm not sure if that was a temporarily fix or not. I ended up selling revision 2 to someone. I hope I didn't screw them over and it eventually dies on them. Oh well, revision 2 blows but then again I had the original revision 0 at launch one time and that one died on me. I ended up chucking it away sadly without even tweaking the laser on that one. I didn't know about the tweaking laser trick. So I probably threw away a perfectly good Dreamcast with the older heatsink model. :p
I've actually had the best luck with Model 1. Haven't had one of them die on me and I believe I have 3 Dreamcasts of Revision 1. Yeah, I'm one of those weirdos who owns multiple Dreamcast because I'm always paranoid about the console dying on me even tho Revision 1 has yet to die on me and I play my Dreamcast fairly often. Not as of late because been busy with work. So from the standpoint of how long a Dreamcast last might be dumb luck but I think Revision 1 might be as good if not better than Revision 0. Or maybe it was just dumb luck that my Original Dreamcast I had as a kid died on me.
Where do you get parts for revision 2
Rob, I preordered a Dreamcast from a local Electronics Boutique. I don't know which Revision it was, just that I had to take it back the next day because it wouldn't read third party discs. The one they replaced it with still works great. It's a Revision 1. Just know that Revision 2 Dreamcasts won't play aftermarket releases (and there are a lot of them) because the Rev. 2 has no MilCD support. Rev. 0 and Rev. 1 do. I've read that the Rev. number is also printed on the side of the box, and on the motherboard. I'll have to check my box to verify if that's the case. - MarkMSH
Nice. Well I know all my Dreamcast read all my discs fine, anytime I've had issue reading either retail or copied discs all that was required was tweaking laser, laser pot adjustment for Dreamcast if you ever need to look it up.
@@MaximumRD I checked my box and I couldn't find the Rev. # on it; it does say Made in China in the area where the UPC is. On the bottom of the console it does indicate 1 (in a circle). The GD-ROM drive was designed by Yamaha, however two different companies made them. Yamaha and Samsung. I've read that the Yamaha made drives, used in Rev. 0 consoles, are more reliable then the ones made by Samsung.
Thanks, great video. I have 3 Rev. 1 PAL (UK) machines, they seem mostly identical apart from my first one has a brown/toffee colored controller port board, this also has no "Made In China" white label but it is engraved "Made In China" on the metal itself, all 3 are Samsung drives.
I have a revision 0 August 99 Japanese model and it works like a dream and is still pretty quiet.
I do have a Rev. 0 Dreamcast and it works better than my Rev. 1. The laser is a lot more reliable than the Samsung
Me too. I only use Revision 1s for GDEMUs, since those drives always tend to have Samsung Drives which are cheaper built quality. If u want to play retail games and burned games more consistently, then Revision 0s is the best way to go since it has better quality parts inside especially that GD rom drive which is a Yamaha drive.
The metal fan Rev0 models have Katana labeled motherboards. I have one of the original Japanese models from 1998.
I have the same one myself. Additionally, there is no revision number on my sticker. It simply has the box with NTSC J in it. I was looking to install GDEMU into it, but I'll have to get a Rev 1 for that.
Ten years olddd so crazy how time flies, still have these Dreamcast’s?
Right? Yes, happily I do. Several months ago we had a break in losing about half my collection but fortunately these where in the remaining half 🤷♂️But man some of the loses, Neo Geo CD, Original HIGH DEFITION LABELED Sega Genesis, several 8-bit computers. Well, learned some hard lessons and hoping to just enjoy what's left while I can.
@@MaximumRD I have 7 working dreamcasts and just now realized one of them is a rev 0! Thanks for helping me realize I own one of those gems!
Well thanks for watching and commenting, my videos back then were not to clear with the equipment I had but if a single person still watches or benefits that's great!
Cool vid. I have a strange one. It's a revision 1 but with a metal fan and a different chassis to the other revision 1 units i've seen online. Sort of a hybrid of the revision 0 and revision 1 i guess but without the pipes and heat sync
That's quite the macro lens you got there! Works really well but only if you're like an inch in to your object! Anyway cool vid I had no idea of these differences. I'll have to check my two Dreamcasts but I don't recall ever seeing a metal fan housing in any DC I've ever had and opened.
I can confirm some pal va1 consoles have a metal fan, but none have the heat sync.
I like Rev 0s, I have a demo kiosk console that is. BUT, I’ve always found Model 1s to be some of the most reliable, ESPECIALLY if it’s running a Japanese Yamaha drive. If you have Rev 1s, you have the best version to work on and mod as well, lots of options!
My DC's a revision 0, luckily enough...
Anyway, from what I've heard, the ones that can't play burned discs do exist, probably, but they were only released in Japan, in later 2000 and on -- all three US/EU models do play burned discs.
Finally someone else my revision 0 plays burned games straight up without a boot disc
@LoricElf yes, there are rev 2 units that will not read backups (i own a rev2 will read backups and another that won't).
I went Through 2 revsion 1s consoles, they are tend to struggling to read burned games from brands like Verbatim and Regular Maxell CD-Rs , and takes a while to read a burned disc, but it reads Maxell CD-R pros really well tho. While Revision 0s will read any of burn CD-R very well and fast. So in this case, revision 0s is probably the best model I used since it has better quality parts in it.
Probably time for a SD card kit
I got two rev0 dreamcasts bot those are NTSC machines. My regular PAL dreamcasts are later builds with the plastic fans. Don't think the metal parts were ever used in PAL systems as as usual those were nothing more than an afterthought. I do have broadband adapters and modems but found little use for them.
I'll take one of those Broadband adapters off your hands :D From what I've read the main use of the Broadband adapter now is backing up games, I'd like to backup my original games before my GD-ROM drive finally goes.
Yes yes I do have a version 0 dreamcast, and a revision 1 also made in japan
Great video!!! Thank you so much for the information!
The Dreamcast had a notorious issue with its power supply pins, I recall. There was a problem which caused the machine to constantly reset which could be solved by taking the DC apart and cleaning it.
i also noticed the 0 has a quieter gdrom the the 1 but it might just be me maybe. also there is nothing to be afraid of. these things are plug and play like. everything has different connectors and not really easy to mess up. just a lot of screws for the motherboard.
It’s weird I have a 1 and a 0. My 1 plays all burned games. My O will not play Josh prod games but plays a burned half life copy that was done very well also. Has the picture on the disc and came with a manual and back art on the case. The 0 also reads cheats n codes disc which is a burned disc too
I think the first run had rev0 in all regions but I am not positive......might be in the threads I linked to in the description.
Hi. Thank you for sharing. Dreamcasts do tend to get hot and burn the GD-ROM logicboard (I think usually it's the motor controller IC that burns out). I wish they just made it until the end of its like with Yamaha lens and the heat pipe/metal heatsink fan combo.
By the way which revision 0 have the heat pipe and metal heat sink for the fan? I have a Rev. 0 Made in Japan by Asahi Electon. I wonder which manufacturer of revision 0 has that heat sink metal fan combo? Thank you. God bless, Rev. 21:4
I have a Rev 0 from Japan and mine was made by UGO DENSHI. It has the metal heat sink and metal fan enclosure.
3 поколения воссоединились ! 🎉 а какая на ваш взгляд тише работает? У меня 2 rv1 и на обоих сильно жужжат кулера😂
i have a 0 and a 1. can't change the gdrom between them because they are just a little different. have to change stuff wetween the drivs to change them. also can't change the controller ports and fan since they are a little different. the 0 i had had a blown fuseable resistor and the 1 didn't want to read 1 or 2 games so made the 0 drive work in the 1.they have the same connector just the metal around it that is different. the one game was vanishing pont that didn't work.
I've found a VA0 with a mockup modem. There's no RJ45 connector on the back. Actually, there's nothing at all inside the modem. It's been made with a different mold than the regular dreamcast modem as there's no holes to plug anything and there's no connector that plugs into the dreamcast, only plastic. I got this from a video game store that closed a few years ago. They found it in their basement. Any idea what is it? Sound like a demo unit or something.
Well I believe it is simply a cover for where the actual modem would go, it simply makes the console shell look "complete" instead of having a big gap the modem would occupy. Pretty sure I got that on at least one myself.
Thats strange - didn't expect them to have different GD ROM Drive revisions. Mines a Rev.1 Dreamcast, NTSU-U, manufactured August 1999 - the GD ROM Drive says " ASSY GD UNIT KATANA, YAMAHA, MADE IN JAPAN."
Ancient post: Ahhh yes this is what mine says too.. and has a plastic fan instead of metal. Kind of an inbetween of rev 0 and 1.
Cool! it seems I have a rev 0. My console is from July 1999.
Also, is it normal that the disc drive is EXTREMELY loud when loading games? I'm not sure that's normal.
Dreamcast disc access typically is extremely loud and aggressive sounding yes.
Good stuff man, now besides the better build were there any differences on the revisions like some but not all could play burned games or anything?
Did you watch the video? I clearly state where each was manufactured.
Probably, I mentioned all the dates on mine but not as the indication of revision (though I am sure it is) does your dreamcast have the label on the bottom? At 9min 50sec in the video I show you where to check the number on the bottom label, it is just to the left of the NTSC text near the bottom right of the label.
Cool! I am making a followup video to this I had not planned on. It will lightly touch on problems with dead controller ports, disc read issue and resetting issue on Dreamcast. All of which are a relatively easy fix (I did them so they must be easy) so check it out hopefully within a couple hours......
Question for you, Rob. Is there anyone out there who sells replacement drives for the Dreamcast? I ask because I've got an old Dreamcast that won't read discs, but still powers on.
I don't really know of such things off hand, it would not surprise me though nobody immediately comes to mind. If I do not find on Ebay I find through forums like Atariage or Digital Press. When you say powers on but does not read disc, is there any drive movement? Can it read even a Music CD? It may just need a POT adjust to focus the laser. see the reason keep 3 Dreamcasts is for backup as parts are getting rare.
You should never adjust the pot bud. Its factory set and very difficult to get it back should you ever replace with a new laser. Your welcome.
have pictures of the 0 took apart on my photobucket too. not the best with phone camera but good enough.
Heh yeah if your at the exact perfect distance and completely still it's great.
The Rev0 Dreamcasts are pretty sweet, better quality fan, cooling system and even GDrom. The guy who made the thread and informed me about Rev0 Just did a video response showing his awesome consoles, check it out!
hah yeah if yur at the ep
@DJWrath1 correct, rev2 GD drives are garbage and have very little wear resistance when exposed to cdr "burned games". Only use retail GD games on it if you want to survive!
I still have my launch day dreamcast but I'm getting rid of it.
Mine is a revision 1. Manufactured in June 2000
I don't think mine was a rev. 0 because as I remember it had cooling issues(when it got hot it would stop reading the disc.) I was thinking about rebuilding it into a PC case.
I know this is video old but I just bought a Revision 0 Dreamcast and my time stamp is May 1999 Made in Japan so are there any ones dates back before May month?
very interesting.. i have a rev 1 after checking.. now i feel inadequate. lol.
Unfortunately, the potentiometer adjust did nothing for me. It still reads certain games, but is very random about it, and it simply won't read my Shenmue discs anymore even though they are in mint condition. I figure it won't read those because of the large amount of data on each disc when compared to other games. I have another fully working unit, but would love to fix the one having issues.
Also I highly recommend the video titled "Rev0 Dreamcast Comparison - American, Japanese, Demo-Kiosk and Stock" by the username " daaborion " if you have not already seen it.
Honestly, every detail I know I have given, I suggest links in the video description especially the threads by DaytonaUSA as he is the on who seems to know all about it.
As far a systems that cannot play burned games (all 3 of mine DO!) I have heard everything from a select few cannot to that just being a rumor from people who simply did not know how to burn properly.
I have a Rev 0 dreamcast. I won't read discs anymore though, the laser appears to work but the actual arm its connected to doesn't move anymore.
That problem is related to the tinniest gear attached to the laser motor, ir gets broken overtime, maybe you can't see it at first sight but if you inspect that piece you can note a little crack along the gear. If you just have the spare piece from another console you can change it very easily. Joust take out the gear by levering the gear with some pointy pliers (be careful to not mess the gear) and pushing the new one in place
??? You never let us see the one with the Green TOP?
You took its Top off But Kept it Low and Angled out of Our VIEW?
I Wanted to See the Fan on the One Your Called Ver 0 ..Rev 0
Also a look at the Ver 2?
Thank You Vary Much for the Video :-)
where does one find one of those green disc tray covers ?
Hopefully someone can give you a real answer, not sure they are as common these days, mine just came like this from a lot I purchased on Ebay. Getting today though, I've no idea.
ahh thanks anyways , yea no luck finding one so far , so that was a good find!
The one I got is a rev 2 ntscu. I am already noticing some problems with it loading cds. It might be cause i am using burned games.
I have a dreamcast and it can Play Mil-CD
I Imported a American dreamcast
My Imported dreamcast is from decent 1999
Did you give a Month and Year?
Thank you,
if the bottom sticker is missing from a Dreamcast, you can tell if it's model 0 by the metal fan, but what if you want to know if it was made in china/japan/indonesia?
Japan Rev 0's with the metal fan have drive units made by Katana, which is etched onto the metal housing inside next to the drive unit.
I have a revision 1 and 0
HELLO Whats so special about the rev0 model? Is it a collectors item and more bugs worth?
ooo wow MaxRD from BF1942 ? wsups !!! -mistamontiel
Also having ridiculous reset problems .. damn it power supply contacts .. I have the Sports model I guess none of them are REV0s ? The contacts seem sturdier there .. I think I will need a REV0 and just paint I don't wish to get zapped er hurt what I have ={
I had rev 1,are they a diffrences in build-in softwere too?
yeah the 1st china the 2nd and 3rd japan. Coz you have a long intro
lol well not like I knew to go to the info you wanted immediately, so you had to wait 2 whole minutes.
The more I look into this, the more I think this whole concept of "Rev 0" "Rev 1" etc Dreamcasts is completely wrong. The reason I say this is because these are such minor differences. When you look at the PS2 or PS3, for example, you see different model numbers with major revisions among them. I've come across at least 3 totally different motherboards just for the fat PS3, for example. I'm talking about revisions so different that you can't physically mount one board into another PS3 because it's an entirely different shape. Hardware revisions are generally more than just changing minor things like the cooler.
The question is can you mount a "Rev 0" cooler inside a "Rev 1" Dreamcast? They don't appear to be physically different enough to prevent that possibility. If that's the case, then what it boils down to is that there is no revision number, there's simply Dreamcasts that happened to use this part instead of that part. More than likely they started to use one cooler design, switched to another, and continued to use the parts they already had for some and the new parts for others. This happens all the time when you have devices that get tweaked over time for cost-saving and other purposes.
The same goes for the GD-ROMs. It's not uncommon to source from multiple manufacturers, so it's not surprising some would have drives made in Japan and some made in China. Since the Dreamcast wasn't on the market very long (Sega announced they would be stopping production on January 31st of 2001, barely more than 2 years after having launched the thing in Japan, meaning the switch to various parts to cut costs began long before that), so there just wasn't enough time to make actual revisions. I imagine that if you took a bunch of "Rev 0" consoles and dissected them, you'd find a bunch of dissimilar parts. Nothing here indicates that there's a specific formula for what got produced when.
I think the heat pipe is different on the Rev 0 so I don't think you can't just switch out the fans. I mean I'm sure you can switch out the plastic fan but not the actual heatsink because the actual heatsink on Rev 0 is attached to the motherboard or whatever they call it.
no! you can't!
1) cooler come with heatpipes+dissipator and thermo probe which you can't connect to VA1,VA2 mobos cause of missing connector on the motherboars
2) top shield is different from other two revisions to fit heat pipe cooling system
general speacking all three revisions are compatible only in PSU and frontal daughter PCB with gamepad connectors, motherboards/GD-Roms/cooling is different. Samsung GD-Roms are 3.3V while Yamaha found on VA0 are 5V rated.
3) you can allso find VA1 and VA2 NTSC-J "made in japan" with 670-14071B/C/D/E/F/G partnumbers
By the force, it would have been so easy just to show those numbers on the back straight away it literally took you a few seconds to show it and i waited over ten minutes for you to get to it. 🤣
i have had 3 rev 1s 2 had the standard blue clock battery and the one in my lap right now has the purple battery from your rev 0. comments?
Mine also has a purple battery. My GD-ROM says Yamaha Made in Japan and it's etched into the metal, no sticker. I think there are a lot more variations of the different revs than just what this video shows. I'm assuming the board that the battery is attached to is yellow?
Can you replace the gd Rom with a completely different one?
No idea sorry.
@@MaximumRD it's ok there's not many videos out there that truly show you how to fix it
How do you open a rev 0 dreamcast? The screws are not philips head. They look more like gamebit. But I tried both the 3.8 and the 4.5 game bit. They are both too large.
you need a torx screwdriver for those ones. most rev 0 dreamcasts dont have those but a very few do.
Hey there! A question, someone here might be able to answer: I have a rev1 DC with a dead motherboard, but working gdrom, powerboard, fan and controller unit. Can I replace the rev1 motherboard with a rev0? Are the above hw for rev1 compatible with rev0 board?
Where did you got the lime green covers?
+Henrick Rawlins It was bought with some games and accessories of some seller on Ebay, it came like this, thought it was cool.
+MaximumRD outstanding
The drive and metal fan can be mounted in rev 1? Does it work well?
I'd be interested to know as well, although I assume finding the parts might be difficult.
Rev 1 models support the Yamaha drives made in Japan.
tenho o modelo rev 2 e continua trabalhando muito bem
rev 2 still works very good
works or dead dreamcast rev 2 ?
@@elisons i changed two times the optical unity, and now is working well
Hi, I hope you or someone can help. I just have a GD-ROM unit here and wonder if it was a VA0 one. It says " 2 / 610 8923-01 / ASSY GD UNIT KATANA / YAMAHA / MADE IN JAPAN" on the metal shield. As I could not read it in the video (video was not sharp enough when showing the drive) I wonder if you could compare it with whats written on your drive in the VA0 model. (Or anyone having a VA0) Thanks :)
Hi. What do you think of the GDEmu and the Qingya clone of the GDEmu?
Thank you.
God bless, Proverbs 31
SevenDeMagnus I think I wish I had the money to buy one and test for myself but without hands on experience anything I say would only be an uneducated guess, sorry.
i have a rev 2. i wish i had a metal fan lol
Can they all run burn disc??
All mine? YES, I have had to do a POT Tweak occasionally but otherwise yes.
Thx
I have 2 dreamcast. I tightened the small screw on the back or the gdroom. Now they spin for about 7 to 9 seconds before stopping again. I keep tighting but it doesn't improve it. Any tips?
Not really, it's been years since I played around with my Dreamcasts, you have the same issue with both? why did you tighten that screw? It is a delicate balance, try loosening again or different positions. Do you mean the screw to calibrate the laser? It needs to be just right, in the wrong position it will load original but no backups, or backups no original or even nothing at all.
It's a real pain to adjust them properly, small adjustments until it is just right, but if your GD-ROM drives on the way out (as I suspect mine is) and you have a VA1 console, maybe consider a GDEMU.
My Dreamcast died last year.... Everytime I turn it on, it refuses to read discs, and to make it even worse..... My lid will not stay closed!!
@Wade Wilson can I replace 9th while gd Rom with a different one from a different console
Sorry just read your next comment, I see you established already it is revision 1. I THINK there were just 4 revisions ( 0-3) but I am not positive.
hurray and i have 10 revision 0.
