The black pickup was not the stock PAF. The original pickup was a bone color. That one gave out around 1972, I believe. The bridge pickup was replaced with a Gibson T-Top. The push-pull pots did not happen till long after Led Zeppelin.

Jimmy Page specified he wanted black bobbins on his signature guitars for some reason.

@@ericbitzer5247 Could be because DiMarzio trademarked double cream bobbins at some point in the 80s (could be 90s). When Duncan wound some pickups for Page, they used double black. Perhaps Page just wanted to keep the double black and/or Gibson couldn't do double cream anyway.

@@majick59 I didn't know that. I don't think the color of bobbins should be able to be trademarked. That's ridiculous like trademark red or blue cars. The corporate world is sick.

There appears to be something off with your Custom Authentic. There should only be one push pull knob not 3. Perhaps it has been altered ?

None of pages guitars had coil splits in rhe led zeppelin era and to this day his actual number 1 les paul does not have any coil splits. His number 1 only had one push pull pot and it puts the pickups out of Phase in the middle and it's feature was not added until the mid to late 90s only pages number 2 les paul has coil splits and those were not added until around 1981 or 82. Because Edwin Wison only had 45 minutes with the guitar had made a major mistake with the wiring. The page number 1 replica in its stock form is wires permanently out of Phase on the middle which is incorrect as pages actual guitar is not wired out of Phase in the middle position which ties into the second wiring blunder which was making the single push pull pot a coil split for rhe bridge pickup when the push pull pot is supposed to be for out of Phase switching in rhe middle position. When Edwin Wilson went to pages house to examine the guitar he shot a video where page explains some things about the guitar and Pafe clearly articulates that the single push pull pot was for out of Phase sounds not for coil splitting page Cleary states as he pulls up in the pot this is for the Peter Green sound. And then page pushes the pot back down and says that Puts it back to full whack . The Peter Green sound has nothing to do with coil splitting bridge pickups How Edwin did not catch onto this is quite mind boggling. Page states that the push pull pot is for the Peter Green sound when the guitar is in the middle position. Did Edwin think he knew better then Page ? Did he think page did not understand his own guitar or did he think page was confused about what the Peter Green sound was and how its achieved? But agian none of pages guitars had coil splits push pulls or Phase switches until after led zeppelin. Page absolutely switched guitars on stage when he wanted a single coil sound be had a brown telecaster and blue star that he used frequently onstage

Jimmy pages number 1 did not have the original Pafs when Gibson examined the guitar in 2002 . Those pickups were long gone . The original bridge PAF failed in early 1972 and was replaced with a gibson t top humbucket which is nothing like A Paf and then the t top was replaced with a hotter wound Seymour custom shop pickup in the very early 90s . The original neck Paf was replaced in mid to late 90s with a 1960 Gibson PAF. When Edwin Wilson examined Pages guitar it did not have the original 1959 pickups. It had a 1960 PAF in rhe neck and s custom wound dumcan in the bridge . The fact that Pages guitar had an uncovered double white pickup in the early 70s and then had an uncovered double black pickup in the late 80s unawares is an obvious clue that the original pickup could not have possibly been in the guitar. The double white was replaced in the spring of 72 with a chrome covered t top then the cover was removed in 1988 revealing that it was in fact a t top and was had double black bobbins . Then in the very early 90s a hotter wound double black bobbin custom shop duncan . Gibson should have got seynour ducan to recreate that pickup. The custom duncan has an A5 magnet and the Page Burstbuckers have A3 magnets and the made both the neck and bridge page burstbucker the identical pickup even though page a 1960 Gibson Paf in the neck and a custom wound duncan in the bridge . The duncan Page pickups don't really sound like Pafs they have a more modernish tone to them.

The original Neck PAF was very weak albeit a fairly hot wind .The Original Bridge PAF was repaired in Melbourne Australia by Merv Carghill but as you say Changed out shortly after... I do wonder why Jimmy Changed out that original neck PAF for another PAF? Did that pickup go bad like the bridge one did many years before?

This is a fantastic guitar no doubt. It's a pity Gibson have never tried to replicate the "Zeppelin" guitar , as all this Push Pull Stuff is tonally wrong for Led Zeppelin. I am led to believe that when the Middle Pickup position is selected on these Re Creations, it automatically defaults to an 'out of phase' tone and Mid position "IN PHASE' is not achievable. If this is the case, the iconic Page tone is absent and accurate tones for Rock and Roll , Whole Lotta Love, Black Dog, Tea for One, SIBLY etc cannot be got (Which use Mid Position In Phase).. I have a 'Period Correct' 1973 Page Tone on my Channel for those interested...

    • @DoYouLikeGear

Yeah, I think the push pull pots were added by the previous owner. It's not supposed to have that. I always wonder what the story is with that...who spends $10k on a signature guitar to make mods to it...and then loses it at a furniture auction?
Anyways, I had to sell it to help finance a home purchase and broke even...I think it was exported to China unfortunately. 😕

If it were me, I'd spec it to Pages 1973 Guitar , but keep the original parts in a safe place, so it could be put back to factory specs if needed.. That way, there is no value stripped from the guitar..

Pages number 1 les paul does not automatically go out of Phase when switched to the middle position. Page has a single push pull pot on his number 1 that puts the pickup out of Phase in the middle. It's not wired permanently out of Phase in the middle. Besides none of pages guitar had any push pull pots during led zeppelin and there are no out of Phase tones during led zeppelin. All of his guitars had stock wiring during led zeppelin and were all in phase in the middle position. Page added push pull pots to his number 2 les paul in 1981 and the out of Phase push pull pot on his number 1 was not installed until the very late 90s . None of songs or Page tones you mentioned were out of Phase. Rock and roll whole lotta love Etc are all in Phase both in the studio and live during the zep era .
