my brass backlow preventer only allows the pvc male threaded adapter to get maybe 3 full turns before it gets hard to turn by hand. Is this enough? how tight is tight enough?

Hand tighten as hard as you can then use your vise grips to tighten until it just squeeks a little. You will hear it!

or just use a PVC Grip by male adapter that is made out of brass. the "grip" side is female that the pvc pipe will slide in to, and tightens to "Grip" the pipe. the Male end, you just thread into the Backflow preventer and one coming out of the water meter. .... Now, if the pipe gets broken, you can simply Loosen the "grip nuts" and take out the affected pipe, and put in a new piece cut to proper length, in a matter of minutes. No having to waste MORE money on other fittings like the PVC Female adapter and schedule 80 nipple

Hi Christina, thanks for watching. And thanks also for the comment, I love hearing how people have different ways of doing things! The only comment I would make is that a 1" fem adapter + Schd 80 nipple is about 4.09 USD. I can't imagine any brass fitting being cheaper that that, but maybe I'm wrong.

It's definitely going to cost more, just by a few dollars from the right plumbing supply company. But, over the life of the backflow or other connection, and the ease of removal without needing to cut pipes and add slip x slip couplings. It's more cost effective.

I'm actually a Certified Back flow installer and Tester in South Carolina. I will only use bras adapters into back flows.

I disagree that schedule 80 is better in freezing situations. If anything freezes it will be the schedule 80 everytime. 23 years in the business. The other thing is, to avoid a bend in your trench, mark it out, so the trench operator knows where to go! Avoid tree roots. Look up. As above, so below. Tree roots grow too and more often than not they grow right through your pipe!
