My good friend from high school was murdered in 1999 here in Saco Maine. She was 15 years old her name was Ashley Oullette. There was a "True Crime Daily" episode on UA-cam about her. Her killer still walks around free here Southern Maine. His name is Dan Sanborn. Cops claim there is not enough evidence. If you Google her name you'll find a bunch of articles on her. Her mother and sister deserve justice. This case is also linked to the disappearance of Tony Torres of Biddeford Maine. She was last person to see Ashley before she was raped and strangled and left dead in the middle of the road. Please consider this case. It's been 23 years since she was murdered. She was murdered February 1999.

It’s so upsetting that Brooke’s murderer gets an entire professionally done documentary, and Brooke’s family has to tell her story on cell phones in their own home and relive the trauma. Shame on Hulu.

@@LeneeLenee i agree. I understand she is trying to validate the family’s side by doing that. This video after all, is For the victim and her family to share Their story, not to cover the whole story. So in that context, it fits the purpose.
Do I agree w keep keep calling him a killer? No, because the “killer” is human too and deserves to be addressed with a name, at the very least. What I mean is yes, he is her killer, and so it makes sense to be referred to as such. but that label doesn’t have to replace his name and identity. He is still a person.

All of the information is public knowledge. No one needs permission to make a movie about a topic. You may not like it but that doesn't make it illegal (or should be illegal).

They can obviously do what they want but it's like trying to dig a hole in the sand with the waves crashing in. They'll never be fast enough.

It’s hurtful to them just because in the documentary they focus more on the killer than the girl who lost her life. I would be upset too but i get what you’re saying. Maybe it’s just their way of grieving.

What I don't get is if the family was going to post about it, why didn't they just agree to be a part of the film and their side of the story would have been included in the film and every time someone watched it, viewers would know there was more to the story than what is being told. But instead they declined (I know the reasons, but the reasons just don't make sense) and then make tiktok videos explaining what they could have explained in the film? It just doesn't make sense.
For one it's not a documentary. It's not meant to be a factual record of events from both sides. It has an angle. It has a focus (which is the sleep walking defense). This is more of a show/movie etc... But second, they only focused on the defendant because he was using a defense that not many people have used. This film wouldn't have been produced had he used virtually any other defense other than "sleepwalking." That's why the film was made and received the publicity it did.
I totally agree with you...I've never lost a loved one, so I have no idea how I'd react if the producers called and wanted to do a show/movie on their murder, that's for sure.
I absolutely love how proud her mom looks when talking about her (as she should be) just makes my heart ache, no one deserves this.
The fact that he remembers giving Brooke the shirt, hugging her, and telling her goodbye proves he wasn’t asleep during that interaction. Then he somehow immediately fell asleep after she left his room and entered a state of sleep deep enough to sleepwalk. Also, how convenient that he stayed asleep while brutally murdering someone who would have fought back and cut himself in the process only to wake up directly after. All while having no other incidents of sleepwalking around this time. Sure.
I had this exact same thought, and wondered if it’s physiologically possible for him to have been in a deep enough sleep to be ‘sleep walking’ only minutes after he was awake enough to say goodbye and point out where the tee shirt was. It kind of seems like he lured her there with the whole tee shirt thing, to make a final attempt at some kind of romantic display, then put on this whole act. Very weird, and SHAME on Hulu. I always have hated that platform.

It's not that he's remorseful, they alleged that this aspect of the trial was unfair because it would've substantiated the sleepwalking defense. And it is true technically, if you omit that he is, of course this explanation will seem pretty improbable. It should've been included. I don't buy that he was asleep mind you, but I've heard worse reasons for appeals.
Yes, even if he was remorseful he would accept his sentence. If i murdered someone I cared abut I would try to get as mush jail time as possible and not try to get out of it. Like Danie P said taking responsibility
It would give me a little peace if the killer of my loved one showed remorse than cold heartedly not … it just would.
He obviously tried to make a move on her again which was his motive for her coming to get this tshirt. He was denied and still drunk and killed her. Poor girl my heart goes out to her family

I remember signing the petition to prevent this documentary from being made back when the family still thought there was a chance they could stop it. Shame on Hulu for going through with it without the blessing of the family, and for making it all about the killer and not about the victim's life.

exactly.....im a sleep walker...i tend to be one that talks or minor movement. i have had some events i walked or stood there like a wierdo staring at nothing. i have a history of it since i was a kid. you dont just suddenly have sleep walking episode and a violent one at that and magically remember everything but the actual murder. that doesnt happen. now i get blanking out due to trauma as some have been proven to have happen, but that too is a very rare thing to happen. hes full of it.
And her sister just happened to not be there as well...he seen that as an opportunity

He remembers talking to her to tell her about the shirt and remembers her walking out but magically forgets or “falls asleep” before she can leave the house? How convenient. I think he tried to assault her and it led to her murder. Thank you for covering this case. I can’t even imagine how her family must feel.
The fact that the killer asked her to return for a piece of fabric just means that he was pre-meditating this from the beginning and then tried to claim he was sleep walking.
The most hurtful part of these videos is when I hear the family talk about how amazing Brooke was 💔 her dad called her Brookie 🥺

I don’t think people are making excuses, but this kind of thing does happen unfortunately. He’s absolutely responsible, but we don’t even know why he would do this and simply discussing the mental stability of a killer isn’t making an excuse

It’s disgusting that a company, like Hulu, didn’t even get the family’s permission to make this documentary. The family was basically only told that ‘hey we’re making a documentary about your daughter’s murder and you can’t stop us.’ Absolutely sick. I hope everyone in that family will finally get the chance to heal.

They did the same thing with the show “the act”. Hulu doesn’t care and they get away with it because people watch those shows.
I could literally write a book of angles they did not address or look at. What about the months leading up to? Why was his phone never gone through in depth to verify his conversation and interactions with Brooke and his other friends the months before. So many questions that should have been asked so many missed opportunities to put more pressure on him during interrogations and in the trial itself. I just can’t believe how they brushed over the whole thing because they “knew” what happened so they didn’t care to dive deeper. And now we’ll probably never know and it’s just such a shame. It just goes to show that just knowing who the killer is does not mean a family will receive closure.

My husband attacked me a few years ago, in his sleep. It was a very stressful time at work. He was dreaming that I was someone else. But he woke up immediatley when I started screaming at him. He is still buying flowers and chocholates 28 years later. My point is, I am sure she would have put up a fight. That must have woken him up. I dont believe his sleep walking excuse.
That sounds more like a night terror, which can definitely be stress induced. Thank God you were able to snap him out of it.
100% one of my son suffers from night terrors and has lashed out (with fists as he doesn't sleep with knives) but the moment we scream his name he snaps out of it, then looks at us like were silly for being in his room.
My ex put me in a leg lock while we were sleeping. As soon as I yelled he woke up and couldn't believe he did it. He was so sorry even though he didn't hurt me. I don't believe he was sleep walking.

I've been binging your videos lately and I have to say that I love what you do for the victims families. Not only with all of the organizations you promote and donate to, but also with the storytelling. You always focus on what happened to the victim, rather than what the killer did. You focus on the the victims life and talk about the life that was lost, rather than the one that ended it. I have so much respect for you.
It breaks my heart to hear she still invited him out after finding him naked in the closet creeping on her. Just shows you how she wanted to understand everyone. Truly disturbing. She rejected him and he murdered her for it. Should be simple as that.

The N3 stage (when you actually sleep walk) takes AT LEAST 20 minutes to get to. There is no way he was sleep walking!

Too forgiving + she sees people as good first, when i meet people i first assume that i cant trust them, but tbh that because i got raped by people i trusted the most and i got almost kidnapped... People who havent seen the dark side belive that for exsample their good friend hidding in their closet nacked couldve been a bad prank, i would never talk to that person ever again. At the end of the day its still not the victims fault, its so sad that we live in a world where as a woman you cant even trust your male friends...
I unfortunately saw the doc before I had seen the family speak out about it. But the whole documentary I was infuriated how one sided it was and how much the murderer was being coddled. THIS is respectful true crime reporting.
Sadly, the documentary is proof that things can be spun a certain way and be more one sided than they actually are.
I also saw the doc before. The documentary made me feel so incredibly disgusting. They tried so hard to paint him in a good light.
Hulu should have more respect for families and Brooke will now be remembered for the wonderful soul she was because of this video. I can't imagine how incredibly heartbreaking and traumatizing this would have been for her family and friends you are all amazing and so strong.
This is soooo sad! She was so young, vibrant, and beautiful! She had her whole life ahead of herself. It's just disgusting that a so called trusted friend did that to her. And it's so cool that we were born in the exact same day. I was also born Sept. 1, 1995. I'm just so happy that proper justice was served to that monster!

Brooke was a grade a head of me in school.she was also best friends with my sister. She was the most sweetest person. I don’t think I ever saw her without a smile on her face! I’ve worked and been a family that has been traumatized by a sudden death or murder and this is the first time I have seen a show that captures the impact these stories make on friends and families. When they say the family is never the same and always haunted, it’s just words and as much sympathy as one can have that hasn’t been there. But when it happens to u, the way the pain and trauma infests everyone is something u can’t ever understand. But this is good. It’s as close as u can. There are dozens of people that live with the pain of one person dead. I’m so glad they get to share their memories of Jordan with us. Thank u!
So glad I was able to hear Brooke’s story through someone approved by their family to share it, and didn’t see the documentary. Your respect of others says a lot about you, Kendall.
They were victimized twice! Once by the awful crime and then the media. I have a friend whose husband was killed by his mistress’ husband. She said Dateline basically said with or without you, we’re doing this. Meanwhile she is in the middle of grieving and has 5 small children. I HATE that the media can do that without the consent of the next of kin. It’s so disgraceful!

But how would you write legislation to prevent that without infringing on free press, which is crucial to a representative and fair democracy? I think it has to come down to ethics in journalism. As someone who’s lost a sibling to murder, I feel their pain. The murderer shouldn’t have gotten a documentary making him look like something he is not. I hope Hulu will not do something like this ever again which they sadly probably will again for money.

The whole case just feels so strange.. The fact that he showed such deep remorse and seemed legitimately confused and just plain devastated in the interrogation room really says a lot, but so does the fact that he was a pretty messed up individual who had went through some very dark shit in his life. I guess, nobody will ever know without a doubt that he was conscious while he did what he did..
I feel so terribly sorry for her family, and I hope they were able to find some kind of tiny peace after he was sentenced.. ❤

This is just gross... He lured her back to the house so I feel strongly it was premeditated. And the way he killed her was a crime of passion? Brooke was such a beautiful person. As someone who has lived with a sleep disorder her entire life and has had sleep studies done routinely every other year for the first two decades of her life, the idea that anybody could fall into REM stage sleep in 5 minutes is absolutely insane to me. That's literally not how it works, and i've had enough electrodes glued to my scalp over the years to know this

She never said a thing about rejecting him. you know that she DEFINITELY would have told her friend that OMG can you believe Randy tried to kiss, touch, whatever with me???? But did not say a word except his weird closet thing, which definitely sounds like sleepwalking…naked and saying shhhhhh?? That’s not seductive. I don’t believe he was sleep walking when he murdered her, but let’s not say there were things that weren’t. Even all of her friends and relatives have said he was never romantically interested in her.

I think Randy always wanted to be more than just friends, he was hoping their friendship would blossom into romance and when it didn't that's when he started plotting on her. He knew he had a small window of opportunity when she came back to pick up the rest of her things, the night before when he was naked in the closet I think he planned on doing it then but didn't have the courage to do it. So he lured her back there to get a shirt and say goodbye because he knew when she left Florida he probably will never see her again. Randy was angry because she chose her boyfriend and her new life over him.

I can't be the only person who thinks that even if he WAS sleepwalking, or even if he had an alcohol-induced blackout, that a person who is capable of committing a brutal murder under these conditions should still be in prison. The reason we put criminals behind bars is to keep the general public safe. Even if he was sleepwalking, he still murdered her, and the public is NOT safe from someone capable of committing that crime regardless of the circumstances. He needs to be in prison for life, period.
Would u feel the same if u were the one who was sleepwalking? Since we r referencing the law, it states a person has to be of sound mind to be convicted. That is why they have insanity pleas. Theoretically someone sleeping certainly is not. I honestly don't know whether this guy was or wasn't sleepwalking nd its not for me to judge or figure out. But really? I was married to a man with a sleepwalking disorder. As a child, his issue was so prolific, he and his mother spent a month in a children's hospital 16 hours away from home for study and testing. During our marriage, he did many things while asleep. Some funny but more scary. I fully believe this condition exists, and that the sufferer is not aware, but fully functional.
I also firmly believe this was not the case with this awful man. He did it. Maybe out of anger of rejection. It seems likely. I wasn't there. But I think he is exactly where he belongs. Rest in peace, beautiful angel. The world is less without you.

I have a sleepwalking disorder that I’ve had since childhood. When I was a kid, I used to wake up and open cabinets, play with toys, etc. All very normal stuff. As an adult, it’s gotten much worse. I’ve attacked my boyfriend twice in the night. Luckily, neither of us really got hurt but it shook us both up. It is the worst feeling to know you scared someone close to you and the guilt that comes with it is immense. I’ve also bolted right out of bed and smashed through a bathroom door at an Air BnB, ripping it off the hinges, and splitting my knee by slamming into the toilet. All while asleep. I woke up with the door on top of me and in a lot of pain. All that being said, I know the sleepwalking disorder is real, but I agree with OP. This man killed Brooke in cold blood. It’s so sad.

I’ve heard that sleepwalkers often will grab knifes and will even go into their cars. It’s wild what can happen.
Not defending the killer, but my husband can fall deep asleep in 5 minutes. We can make all kinds of noise and he doesn’t even move. He has narcolepsy though, not a sleep walking disorder.

Thank you for making this tribute to Brooke! We watched "Dead Asleep" last night, and Brooke was presented as a cookie-cutter girl who liked to drink & use social media. It was cold. We've really enjoyed learning about what a talented, ambitious, wonderful & spirited young lady Brooke was. Our hearts go out to Brooke's family & friends.
I believe he might have been secretly in love with her and killed her in rage because he knew she was leaving Florida forever and he couldn't be in her life anymore. Dad's past actions were the catalyst for him starting to drink and discovering his violent side.
Either way it was very senseless and I'm so sorry for Brooke's family.. But thank you for telling her story and warning other young people out there.
I wouldn't call it love, you don't kill people you love. Infatuation I can definitely see being a motive though, especially given his behaviour the night before. Poor Brooke
That's exactly what Dr. Grande said when he analyzed the case. There were situations where mixed signals could have been interpreted especially by an intoxicated mind.

I don't know much about sleepwalking so it's pretty hard for me to believe he could kill her in his sleep! I've sat up and had full conversations in my sleep, moved to sleep somewhere else and even gotten undressed while asleep and I still can't believe someone could kill anyone while sleepwalking. I pray for Brooke, her family and her friends.

I’m glad I haven’t watched the documentary on Hulu yet but I had planned to….now I won’t for sure. I don’t think it’s necessarily fair to the family of the deceased when production companies do this. Either persuade them to get on board and go along with it or move on to another case.
Same-I had it on my watch list and i’ve removed it. He still breathes so he doesn’t need a voice and Hulu giving him one is breaking the unwritten rule we as true crime watchers keep-Honor the victim.

I've noticed it's always the BEST people that get murdered. And it's always by some LOSER. It's like they are jealous that everyone likes them. Just move on with your life. You don't gotta be killing people. I feel like she had to have rejected him at some point and boom got his feelings hurt.. instead of being a man and walking away. My opinion though. This is so tragic :(. Knowing that it happened so close to home is terrifying. Most of my friends were enrolled in DE classes at SCF and I knew so many people who attended full time school there. I pray for her family in these awful times.
He was not sleep waking I guarantee you he was in a drunken stupor and knew she was leaving him so he killed her. His life was going no where because he was an alcoholic and he was struggling with the death of his father, so he lost control and killed her. Hopefully he’s sober today if he still alive alcohol changes people
Yes I agree with this, but when he killed her, he wasn’t drunk. He was completely sober, so yeah. Although alcohol does change you, it isn’t an excuse, for taking the life of your longtime friend for straight up rejecting him.

He was awake enough to call her back and have a conversation with her and give her the shirt but then immediately drop off into such a deep sleep that he gets up, finds a knife and kills her? I'm not buying. If her friend had come in with her it might not have happened. And what's up with the man who heard her screaming and shrugged it off? Ugh
I haven't seen the Hulu episode, but if the family was not properly consulted and permissions were not gained by the production company, all legal avenues should be pursued.
It's public info sadly so nothing can be done ! Everything they used is already online and can be used
Permissions only have to be gained if they are filming them now and they want to use their faces. All of this information is found online so they can legally use it, much in the same way that UA-camrs do. It's annoying but it's sadly Media Law
At the end of the doc they said they reached out for comment or for filming and the family chose not to accept. This is a public case and all the information was public record so they did everything legally they needed to do. Unfortunately i don’t think the Preston family will have a case since this is a public case under the freedom of information act and no minor are involved.
Or AT THE VERY LEAST warn them that they are doing it with or without their input and with out it, it would be primarily about him. I agree, shame on Hulu!

I watched the doc on Hulu over Christmas with my family, and we all agreed he knew what he did. I am a heavy slepwalker and one night I accidently dropped a glass and before anyone could get it off the floor I stepped right onto the broken glass and was instantly awoken. there is no way he did not wake up when cutting himself, He had to be well awake at that point. I am so sorry this family had to go through this. Thank you Kendall for getting the story out for Her family.
And experts have said that there are people that won’t be awaken due to pain. Your experience isn’t the rule , it’s your experience which is kind of irrelevant when there’s evidence to the fact that HIS experience is a real genuine experience.

Being punished in a place for criminals because of something you can't handle? I'd say under complete medical and mental surveillance instead and be completely locked down when sleeping to prevent incidents.
But he's just a murderer lying about sleepwalking, which is d**kish because people do numerous things whilst actually sleepwalking, and someone could actually end up murdering someone completely unintentionally and actually would want help and to be monitored to protect people, but because of him obviously it ruins sleepwalking credibility because he's plainly lying. Just like r*pe, sleepwalking crimes would be hard to prove already, and people lying about it makes it harder for those actually effected to get the proper help and safety.

Def feel like if he was naked in her closet there was the motive. He knew she was about to leave and he would lose his any surviving chance when Brooke left for NY to her boyfriend. I sleep walk once in a blue moon but never been on trial for a violent act nor do I have any criminal history. I fear my own safety like walking out into traffic than I do for others and no hungover I can't fall back asleep and start sleep walking in 5 mins. That's one of the most absurd things I've ever heard. I remember hearing about this before and watched a docu similar to yours that had ait of his interrogation in it. It's extremely clear he had a thing for Brooke and she even left to stay the night elsewhere the night before and had plans that didn't include this animal and that she was happy with her boyfriend. To me that's the motive. Remorse ? His remorse is bc he didn't get away with it not bc he did it. So no that didn't need included.
This was nicely done, and I learned a lot about Brooke. It's so obvious to those of us who were not lucky enough to have known Brooke, she was so loved and I'm so sorry she was taken from them this way.
While I do believe that people can do things in a “sleep” state and not remember, I don’t think that occurred here. I think Brooke came back to get the shirt and Randy made another sexual advance at her. When she declined, he killed her in a state of rage.

I 100% agree with you, within the time space of things happening I don't think like the specialist said that he had enough time to get into deep enough sleep. There is also the fact that his mother could have made up the whole sleep walking thing to support his story too

I used to sleepwalk as a kid and it would happen a few hours into the sleep cycle. If he was up and coherent enough to have a conversation, I don't think it's possible for him to fall back into a deep enough sleep to actually get into that state and not know what was going on.
This is a good reminder to always put yourself in the victims family shoes when watching a documentary. Especially one sympathising with the killer

This is just another video to prove that there is a classy and descent way to deliver a “true crime” story. Not only that but Kendall does it in the best way by also supporting the family and bringing the light of Brooke into so many peoples lives. She seems like she was an amazing person.
My heart goes out to Brooke’s family and friends. Here’s my theory on Randy. No one likes getting rejected. He flat out confessed to killing her, so that was never the issue. His lawyer was grasping at straws with the sleep walking theory trying to keep Randy’s sentence lower. I think Randy may have blacked out in a fit of jealous rage, but he was definitely not sleeping. Shame on Hulu for putting the documentary out and focusing on the killer. Brooke is the one that needs to be remembered.

Wow!!! I watched the Hulu special on this case and you are right, they totally depicted this whole situation as if he did sleep walk and kill her, but you have shown differently to me telling the story for her family's perspective.

To answer your question...no, I don't think that was enough time for him to be asleep. I am a very heavy sleeper and fall asleep very quickly and even with that said there is NO WAY. Strangely enough I have had a hallucination while drinking too much and I was seeing a lot of weird stuff but I was able to come out of it when a friend took me aside and started talking to me. I also remember the hallucinating. I don't for a second believe he was sleep walking or doesn't remember.

My mom knew Randy. When all this happened she said she wasn't surprised. He had a bad vibe sometimes, ya know? I feel so bad for Brooke and her family. This is a very sad situation, and it's terrible hulu wanted to focus more on Randy and the "sleepwalking" story. I hope the family can get help and I hope this video can bring more supporters and help the family get this petition around and get the signatures they need. 💜

@@kaycguide she met him through a friend of hers. Her friend knew his father, I think they had went to school together or something at one point. So when my mom and her friend were out at the bar and saw Randy Jr, that's how they were introduced. Whenever they went to the local bars and saw him and a few of his friends, they'd sit and talk and be nice. They went to his farewell party when he was moving to Flordia. He was talking like he was excited for the change and everything, so it was wild when news of this broke. There was a lot of rumors floating around at the time on what his motive would have been and a lot of people said it was because she rejected him. But, you know how small town rumors are.
He was texting her to come get the shirt, then after he did it he drove her car and then called 911. All that doesn't seem possible while sleep walking.... I'm not a psychiatrist, so I can't say for sure it just seems convenient he remembers everything before and after, but not during. So sad. Praying for Brooke and her family and friends.

The killer took a beautiful soul with so much life to live away from the people that love her. I cannot imagine their pain.
He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity so he wouldn't have just been released back into the public, he would've gone to a mental health facility. (But I don't think he was sleepwalking, I think he consciously did it)
That's EXACTLY what I was thinking. Just because you're not conscious of your actions doesn't mean you shouldn't be held accountable for them. At the end of the day you're still responsible for any harm you inflict even if you're not in your right mind in that moment.
@@kristens8718 I think it's possible that he was so drunk still that he didn't entirely understand what he was doing HOWEVER that also wouldn't excuse it, especially as someone who knew he had a drinking problem. Even if not premeditated it was something he knew he did and it was murder.
Our society's pension for remembering the criminals instead of the victims has always frustrated me, and I wish there were more active ways to change this viewpoint. It's sad that most people don't know the names of any victims of criminals like Bonnie and Clyde to Jeffrey Dahmer, etc... videos like this are so important when it comes to both advocating for and remembering victims. I completely fucking agree. Random times when I would be hanging out I would come across people that would bring up some well known documentaries or cases and I would ask them if they knew the names of any of the actual victims and alot of them would immediately get defensive and the most common phrase I would be told is " well it's not mentioned enough for my mind to remember."

I have a curiosity for such things but I've always told myself to learn about the victims first. Because they matter so much and deserve to be remembered.
The victims are typically perfectly normal people, it's the murderers that hold fascination because it goes against our nature. I agree that the victims and their families deserve compassion, support and remembrance, of course. But I also want to know the killers whole story so I know the warning signs when I'm out in the world. This case shocks me because, at least from this telling of the story, it sounds as though there weren't any major red flags. Some heavy drinking after a family trauma, but not too abnormal there. I wish I could wrap my head around how this was possible. Was he really so good at hiding a dark side? Did she suspect anything prior to that night before? What a bizarre and horrible business. My heart truly goes out to this family.
