Thanks again for the gift of laughter 🤣 The "AI" commentary was absolutely hilarious. Really awesome you were able to fly a "rare" aircraft, living the dream!
Grew up flying all over in my dad's 210, but the Skymaster has always been my dream ship. Watched BAT*21 dozens of times just for the aerial scenes. This one I never knew about, but it looks like a Skymaster that warped into the 21st century.
my business partner went to oshkosh one year to buy a twin with 6 seats . we saw the adam’s aircraft at oshkosh and while we were being shown through the aircraft , adam’s came into the aircraft and said ‘get rid of these 2 we have a lunch to go to”. We ended up at Beechcraft and purchased 2 king airs at the show and 6 months later purchased another 4 king airs . So adam’s you missed out. I was initially impressed with the adam’s aircraft due to the cheaper running costs compared to the king airs. .
Glad to see 509 still flying. I worked for Adam and built a lot of composite parts for the 500's and 700's used in stress testing and for the first customer 500. I left before the company died, but I miss those birdies!
I saw the factory demo aircraft returning from a demo flight at OSH the year this aircraft made its debut. It was on short final to rwy 27 and went right over the top of me while I was headed to Ardy and Ed's Drive-in. Low overcast and he was just above the trees.
The AI dramatization of the flight there was perfect. Reminds me of those police chase shows where you'd constantly hear about close calls - even when you could see that "close call" often meant "in the next lane." Cheers! 🍻

Bring back some memories of a kid that "restored" a red Fiero on his YT channel several years back. Seriously that really was a nice looking car for it’s time but a lot of that GM interior and some exterior plastic was total trash. One could almost say that was the predecessor to the Saturn line of cars GM dabbled with in the 90’s.
I watch all your vids so I might not be a good judge of the attraction to this one. I do know I was immediately interested in the airplane. I think most pilots are fascinated by unusual aircraft and this is certainly one of them. Having an opportunity to ride in one, much less fly it, is something I would want to watch you experience.

Fun to watch. Interesting aircraft. I like the landing gear and interior, although headroom looks tight. Sidestick control is interesting. Twin boom makes for great camera location. Landing with one engine out is better than in a conventional twin!
Being an infamous Burt Rutan design, I was curious about the unusually long ground roll to V2 while carrying only 3 adults, and why only a few examples were created. She's a rotund lead sled for sure! From wikipedia: "In evaluation flights conducted in 2007 the A500 was noted as being over the projected empty weight by 1,260 lb (570 kg) or 30%. The initial design empty weight publicized in 2003 was 4,200 lb (1,910 kg), while the actual empty weight of the serial number 7 A500 was 5,460 lb (2,480 kg). Initial gross weight was to be 6,300 lb (2,860 kg), which was increased to 7,000 lb (3,180 kg). This resulted in a change of useful load from a forecast 2,100 to 1,540 lb (950 to 700 kg). With the 230 US gal (870 L) fuel tanks full, the available payload for crew, passengers and baggage is 160 lb (73 kg), down from a projected 720 lb (327 kg). *This means that the A500 cannot carry full fuel and one standard weight adult male or female pilot!* I assume the owner either found a great deal on this example or someone owed him some money. Either way, she's a very rare unique bird with tremendous ramp appeal. Thank you for sharing your experiences and Im glad you were offered the generous opportunity to drive. Back in the day, I was fortunate to pilot a Beechcraft Starship from the right seat over a 3.5 hour flight, which reminds me strongly of the A500. Love your channel!
To answer your second question, so few were produced due to Adam Aircraft filing for bankruptcy in 2008. Terrible timing to start production and deliveries concurrent with a deep recession.
@9HighFlyer9 Regardless of the economy, it was destined to failure when the enormous weight penalty was discovered early in the prototype (and likely prior to initial construction). The sagging economy meant they were desperate to raise capitol and forged ahead, with hopes customers would ignore its atrocious useful load capability and cough up the money. The real tragedy remains in all the incredible Rutan concepts that never came to fruition.
you just answered the question about why these and all rutan airplanes are rare.....POS! i can't figure out why everybody worships that loser who could never design an aircraft that could compete with the real airplanes!

It was inspired by the skymasters but planned to be a lighter simpler more efficient update on the concept. Sort of thought that it was planned as a gas turbine powered. It was somewhat underpowered for it's wt at the end of the development process. Which may be why it's a bit slow off the deck. Still an attractive aircraft ..
"Prop 9" and in the background you see a white and grey A500 fuselage which is the old "Prop 4" (Rick Adams personal A500) Many aren't aware, Adam also produced the A700 twinjet which was slightly longer and was the launch customer for the Williams FJ33 turbofan engine. A guy at my airport bought and Adam 500 and put a large deposit on an AdamJet. He couldn't keep the 500 flying because the plane couldn't get certified parts. He had to donate it to a museum to get rid of it. He then lost all of his deposit on the jet. Never try to buy a new design. I flew the owner to KAPA for him to visit the factory while he waited for his planes. I kept my mouth shut although I knew it would turn out badly. I told his pilot to just buy a Citation Jet. After the Adam thing blew up, that's what he finally did.
My father, an airline pilot for 27 years, said only the best pilot could successfully take off a Skymaster if the front engine failed on takeoff. He did not think much of the push/pull concept.
It's a way to have a twin and avoid the critical engine weakness of twins but the noise and the tail limitations, it all just boils down to the same conclusion, we need jets. They are just better. They can be cheaper than piston engines, they are simpler, it's just convention and greed that they are not.
