There would be enough overhead bin space if luggage rules were enforced and every passenger only put in one item. But they put their carry-on, personal item, jacket, duty-free shopping bag, take up 1 whole bin, then spread their legs out like nothing is wrong.
They also need to ensure that people in the BACK of the plane use overhead bins in the BACK. When I first started to fly in the 80’s “you” would NEVER think to put your overhead luggage anywhere but near your seat, you respected the space or others.
Ive had this before with Air NZ here in New Zealand, and it does make it faster, it really does! It’s a lot faster because there’s no bottle neck waiting for bags to be put away if you’re in row 20 and you’re waiting for someone to put their bags away in row 15 you will wait longer, so yes it’s quicker!! 😊
I agree it’s much better than the group boarding and random zone boarding. Some I know had a seat in the back of the plane and almost got into a confrontation with another passenger because they couldn’t get to their seat because he was waiting for the people in front of him to get out of the hallway.
Best boarding experience I've ever had was with Alaskan Airlines. At the time, after all the 1st class/business/priority folks, they would board from the back first. Felt like it saved a chunk of time, and nobody was having to backtrack to find luggage space.
if they allow one check bag for free, it would speed up the process a lot. I am amazed at the amount of carry on luggage because people do not want to pay to check a bag.
Wouldn’t back to front make the most sense ? If all window passengers still need to block the isles to stow their bags isn’t this the problem to begin with ?
WILMA back to front would make the most sense but is probably too confusing. All back to front or front to back creates the same traffic as people in the aisle or middle seat can end up first, then have to get up and move to let the window seat sit. That's where the problem really comes into play and slows things down. There are other schemes that are even more efficient but in testing they were found to be too confusing.
If you are boarding window, middle, isle and can save 2 minute per flight, I wonder if 4 minutes can be saved if you de-board, all isle seats then middle followed by window.
Some passengers are already airing their grievances about the new plans. They are saying, "It’s an inconvenience for people that might be paying more and still have to wait longer to board in order to seat window passengers first." People are so short sighted because it’s all about them! The goal isn’t to be seated first it’s to get in the air as quick as possible people!
I retired from United Airlines 3 years ago after 35 years. This and many other "boarding processes " were tried and failed then and this will fail again. History just keeps repeating itself.
After all those years with the company, please share. What worked in the past? Why did it stop? What would you tweak? I'm curious why employees with so many years in an organization don't offer thier insight as a consultant.
I started flying as a kid in the 80’s, it was always special assistance, 1st class then boarding by row sections with the back first. If you were in the middle or front of economy you always had space for your stuff in overhead bin. The problem now is with almost every airline charging to check luggage, almost everyone has a rollerboard plus a personal item, so overhead space fills up quickly! Airlines need to include 1 piece of checked luggage for free with EVERY TICKET!
@@NoNo-ng9slI wonder if the back to front boarding stopped, because the gate attendants did not not to place the process and or have confrontation in the terminal, that could lead to a disruptive passenger once onboard.
What would also help is a flight attendant inside the plane being right there to help each passenger with a carry-on to take it and put it in a spot instead of letting us do it which my bag can be too heavy and I always need help and then I have to wait for help from a passenger to find a spot and lift it
Nope, it’s the passenger’s responsibility to stow your own luggage and not the flight attendant. My carry on is always light as I don’t expect other passengers to help me. It’s good if they do but it’s always at the back of my mind that they’re not obligated. I’ve helped other people before and from the weight of their carry on, I’ve stopped because it’s heavy and I don’t want to get hurt.

Right. The entitlement is so annoying.
Aisle Seat -- no overhead storage for you! Come back, 1 year. Next!

It may seem it is faster but test runs show WILMA is faster by a little bit. And a little bit adds up.

100% BS on the overhead space. Atleast not with people storing a jacket, bag, carry on and whatever else they bring.
What good is saving two minutes from a cancelled flight going to do?

How is this going to help with the regional jets?
Um... what's the L in Wilma stand for?
You need to be more concerned about these nuts causing drama on these flights. 😳😒💯
Makes no sense
I avoided United at all cost.

A whole 2 minutes
I hope Wilma Flintstone is proud of having a boarding system named after her
Don’t fly Delta!! Why you ask? DELTA aka “Doesn’t Ever Leave The Airport”
Only on their a319 aircraft
It will not matter at all what aircraft they're flying.
What a joke of a company
My wife and I usually travel in "scum" class. We board last, right after service animals.

One of the worst boarding processes! Why would the passengers in aisle seats need to jeopardize the chance to ger the cabin space?!
