The Xs are (technically) string mutes, but you can play it many ways to sound nice and still score. If you have just got the game then I suggest playing only official game songs for a while, until you memorise the string colours and get used to finding your way around the fretboard without looking. Rocksmith > tabs, but there is still a learning curve.
Rocksmith, has it's advantages for new players, but has diminishing returns the more experienced you become. Eventually it just becomes a tool to learn songs quickly (a damn good tool though). But you're right, I would take a rocksmith song over tabs/chords and day of the week. Once you've got around 60 hours or so on it, you'll be able to play plenty of moderately hard songs on full difficulty and speed first time through and score in the 80's.
I began learning guitar about 5 years ago when the first Rocksmith came out. I eventually learned to play outside of the game, learned how to read tabs and all, but one thing's missing with the tabs that makes Rocksmith easier ( for me ) to learn songs: the reflex aspect. You see what's coming next as the song progresses, it's more of an intuitive thing to me when compared to tabs on the net or on paper. I think a lot of guitar teachers are afraid of this game because it kinda competes with their profession. However I know two guys who played guitar before Rocksmith and they had a hard time understanding how it worked so I think it's really made for people who haven't learned how to play yet.
+MyHeadAsplodes Basically your talking about a metronome check out tab pro or guitar tab anyway one is free and all you do is sign up and you have many options available to you feels like the same thing just a little bit different but basically it is like reading tabs but you can slow or speed it up check it out hope this helps
The problem with rocksmith is that it makes the song seem way harder than it actually is . The rhythm is 3 simple chords Also the songs that are not dlc but posted by users usually have a lot of mistakes. This one seems pretty accurate though. Especially the fills and solos.
for me rocksmith tabs are much easier to play than,normal tab in ordinary tab there too much ghost notes so im confused how to play here solo is simply show and you can learn easy
I’ve had the game for a while now and for some reason I still can’t get these custom songs to work… Every time I try to play Pink Floyd red hot chili peppers or a Beatles song the game freezes. Perhaps one day…time will be on my side

I wish the sustain was a lot better , most of the time when I do a sustain the game wont count it or says (miss) because it didn't hold long enough .

The X on the open strings should be large and black, it's a palm mute open string.
