Exactly. I’m guessing visiting North Korea can be an amazing experience because it truly looks like a very beautiful country, all while it may also be scary because of how strict the regime is, and I’m guessing being there as a visitor is like constantly walking on eggshells to stay safe. I also believe it’s fully possible to appreciate a place regardless of the political situation and that you won’t get into trouble if you don’t cause any trouble, at least in a place like North Korea. Respect the country, its leaders and its people and leave politics out of it when visiting a place that is or has been behind an iron curtain. Closest I’ve been myself to such a situation is China. It’s a lot more open than it has been, but you still have to be a bit mindful of what you say and do in a very public situation such as on the Internet.

Yes! It's very true. To various extents, all communist nations only will show tourists what they want them to see. DPRK strayed from straight Marxist Communism, as their system is a mix of Kim I'l Song's ideaology, "Juche" ("Self-Reliance") and Marxist and Stalinist Soviet-style Communism. The DPRK only allows a certain message to reach tourists about the history of the DPRK, it's government, struggles of it's people, etc. It also strictly polices the messages from the outside world to reach it's citizens. They enforce both what goes out and comes in with very harsh punishments. There are several documentary videos available about DPRK here on UA-cam. In many cases, from large producers, like "National Geographic" to smaller, independent producers, the government line is always the same, the tourist locations featured are always the same. Sometimes, the same government minders and tour guides are the same and the same government approved cameral shots and angles are used. You are right. For the most part, if you've seen one DPRK video, you have seen them all.

My ex girlfriend was a television New Zealand news reporter, on assignment to NK all the journalists were placed on specific levels of the building this occurred not just in Pyongyang. It became apparent to her and colleagues their was a faint glow at night around the edges of the mirror, and upon closer inspection found there were 2 way mirrors everywhere. They also pretty openly bug all phone lines. They watched and listened to everything from conversations to myself and her employer, to watching her shower and dress. If I were a journalist, female at that, I'd avoid like the plague.

I'm from Romania and it's triggering for me because I remember before 1989 it was almost the same situation here, people from here were restricted to have access to what tourists and foreigners had. I was a kid then and had friends who left the country and I later saw what it meant to be raised in a democracy, how it could shape someones mentality and personsonality differently. We didn't have that chance back then and now seeing this I can just hope that this crazy dictatorship will end soon and people from North Korea will be free (though full freedom is another story, but still).

That is VERY Truman show like.. I wonder if they try to keep the paint very fresh for the tourists, or the workers are just to give the illusion of the park being semi-closed to make the emptiness less eerie. Either way that is highly bizarre!!

this is unimaginably upsetting. such beautiful nature and such lovely people that don't get to live freely and explore the beauty of even their own country. the more i look at north korea's situation the more devastated i feel. these people really deserve so so much more. i cant believe they have to live brainwashed under such an oppressive regime and i hope so much that they are freed within my lifetime. how lucky i am to have such easy access to information and the outside world

Can you imagine being a Japanese fisherman who got lost out in deep sea for days, maybe weeks, and finally wound up at this beach? He'd be all like, "Thank god, civilization!"
Then he'd probably see the DPRK flag and be like "Can I go back to sea now?"

Kush Patel I disagree. Theres plenty of amazing landscapes in the US, Europe, and many other sovereign nations. I believe many of the places shown here would be persevered even if NK was a democracy.

Darkest Before Dawn Sorry, but if N.Korea were to go what China has then those landscapes wouldn’t exist in their current form, there would be a lot more light pollution and the coast and surrounding sea wouldn’t be as clean.

It’s beautiful.. It’s a kind of haunting, eerie beauty. So empty and void of people, lonely, extremely peaceful in a way. It almost makes you feel like all of it was made for you. It’s not just there in the mountains, it seems like everywhere is the same. Huge cities, with empty streets, massive hotels with no guests, fine restaurants with no patrons. This only exists in North Korea.

Honestly. It’s similar to being rich in a capitalist country. People scramble to solve your problems and serve you. You have a separate reality crafted for you with different rules and privileges.
Edit: I’ve only experienced it an expensive Vegas villa, but it’s always uncanny valley.
