in my experience a PRS is always a lil more "hifi" sounding and a different feel, doesn't sound to me like fender or gibson but different in subtle ways
it does have a lil more clarity but people who want the lespaul want the specific character, the people who want the PRS want the hifi clarity
    just my observations and opinions

When I got Les Paul I thought it was the best. When I first played a PRS, I knew that it was for me. They both sound great. I love the feel and versatility of the PRS better.

Les Paul sounds like butter and has a thicker sound. That is a really great sounding Les Paul! I think the PRS sounds a lot thinner. I believe this is directly due to the scale length. a better comparison would be the PRS 594, due to being closer to the Les Paul scale. Great Playing!

A CE24 is one of the PRS models that is going to be furthest from a LP. Bolt on maple neck and 24 frets and a trem make a huge difference. I used to own a CE24 and other than both sounding like guitars with humbuckers, they're completely different.

As a Les Paul lover I have to say I did not hear enough of a difference to make it that noticeable. I think the Les Paul has more power when you first start playing it. It seemed on all the example the LP started out with more aggression but that could be your playing style. You have said on other videos that your LP makes you dig in more so that could be why? The neck on the LP I think I liked more but I agree that the middle on the PRS did have more twang, but I don't like twang so I would go with the LP lol. So many guitars people think are one only to find out the artist used something else when recording music - Page and Whole Lotta love as one huge example! Many people think Page is using number 1 but the majority opinion is that he in fact recorded that using a Tele. I did read an article where someone who claims to have been in the studio that day says Page actually used his Black Les Paul for that song. Others say Page did not acquire that Black LP until AFTER the song was recorded and released - BUT regardless of whether he used a LP or a Tele the REAL point is this - No one can really tell!! Therefore, it's not that obvious!!

      I own 3 Les Pauls,...A 1998 Standard Tobacco Burst , a 2002 Flammed Cherry Standard and a 1997 Ebony Custom.
I also own a cheap 2018 Epiphone Les Paul 100.
I had a little trouble out of the Custom until I opened the nut saddles a little bit shortly after I first bought it years ago and It has stayed in tune really well and so do the other 2 and so does the Epiphone...Zero tuning stability problems out of any of them and I was and I am a frequent string bender.
Robert has also mentioned before that his Les Paul stays in tune great.

@@stricknine8623 I agree, I have two LP studios, LP Traditional and an Epiphone custom. To compare I also have A PRS SE 245, an S2 Standard and an S2 Singlecut. If anyone is claiming that the PRS guitars hold tuning better than a LP, they are brainwashed by the internet. My S2 standard with a trem holds tuning better than my other PRS guitars. My LPs hold tuning as good or better than my best PRS. Also have a Fender strat which is the worst of them all. If you have a non-locking nut, make sure your nut is cut right and use lubrication.

That said it's pretty close, and there's no real-world situation where you're going to play something for your audience twice with different instruments....so nobody is going to complain about your guitar choice of one over the other. He wasn't saying that they purposefully broke their Les Paul guitars to make them sound better, which is what you seem to be inferring. Due to the angle of the headstock, the Les Paul, especially Gibson's Les Paul, is prone to breakage. In the end, both guitars are nice, and it's up to personal preference which one is better. However, nobody is doing something so utterly ridiculous as breaking their guitars to get better tone.

A PRS Custom 24 won't replace a LP - not just because it has more frets and a trem, its also down to the spacing between the bridge and neck Pick-Ups which are closer together on a Custom 24 which changes the tone, makes it a bit brighter.
If you wanted to get closer, the custom 22 is better, the McCarty is even closer and if you want a very vintage Les Paul like tone, the 594 is closer again....

I closed my eyes during your demo...I picked the PRS every time. The PRS has a fuller sound giving equal attention to balance and broad tones...more sound in general compared to what you call the compressed sound of the LP. Personally, after purchasing a PRS a few months ago I haven't played the old LP at all. The PRS is more comfortable. Just holding the PRS compared to my LP, the PRS fits and doesn't fight me, but my LP is poorly balanced and neck heavy, a chore to just hold without rocking on my knee. The LP forces the player to balance the guitar while playing it, the PRS acts like it was made for my knee letting me play uninhibited. Thanks for a good honest review.

A lot of what you’re hearing as a preference for the PRS on the neck position and the twangyness you like in the middle position probably comes from the position of the neck pickup on a CE24 where it’s shifted quite noticeably (visually) towards the bridge because of the extra length of the neck. I suspect if you had a CE22 the PRS neck and middle position sounds would be more similar to a Les Paul. However, I still think the “solidity” of the neck to body join on a Les Paul (caused by the length of supported neck due to the single cut body shape) and the fixed bridge would lead to a noticeably stronger lower midrange response. However, I agree that this is only really noticeable when demoed back to back, or if you really know the rig and settings being played through you might notice it too.

  • @JamesPetroff

Playing high gain you could not tell. But playing classic rock, you can. The Les Paul is less compressed, so more open and airy. So I prefer the sound of the LP. I have both. The PRS is so much lighter, so for a gig it is just great. It also is more versatile when it coil splits. It gets way more quacky Strat tones. Plus you can get a pretty nice looking SE for under $1000.

"In the territory"? Yes, but... Only a couple of positions were close enough to need a second listen. Overall, in every position, to whatever extent, the Les Paul is richer and deeper. If you did this with a PRS and a Strat, the Fender will be thinner. I live near Annapolis MD, and have seen Paul play in his local bands many times and have spoken with him many times. He wasn't trying to duplicate anything - his original and primary goal was to combine the best features of the Strat and the Les Paul. He succeeded brilliantly.

Another good thing about a PRSis that when you flip it into a neck position pick up(of course pulling the knob and putting it into single coil position) It sounds incredibly close to a Stratocaster neck pickup. And I like being able to get a Les Paul and a Strat sound out of the same guitar. I definitely prefer PRS, and I just bought one on a whim about 10 years ago. Up until then I had been playing Gibsons and fenders exclusively. Now I only play my PRS, and I play my telecaster a lot. I have prs ce and a les Paul and I usually adjust the presence control on the amp or the tone control on the guitar 🎸 because my ce has more top end than my lp.

The scale length of the PRS gives it a snap that is very in LesPaul

In build quality, factory setup and playability a PRS will win in a canter. But a PRS has a different sound to an LP, it may get close but they are different beasts. Both great guitars. 👍

Hi Great riffing! You are playing a PRS CE 24 which has a bolt on neck. I would like to know how it compares to a strat. I think a demo with a PRS Custom 24 and a Les Paul would be a better comparison.

  • @thadlogan51

I have both of those guitars, as well as a PRS core 24, and an SE 245. Gibson guitars sound phenomenal in overdrive... but I don't care for them clean... except for some blues stuff. I play clean 90 percent of the time... and all of my PRS guitars sound significantly better and warmer clean. The Gibson sounds brittle... but has really great bite for overdrive. Now Gibson doesn't sound bad for clean... it's still an amazing guitar... but just not as good as PRS clean. The core 24 versus Gibson would have been better comparison.... Side the CE has it's own voice... which I love too... maybe more for clean... but for overdrive more bassy tones the core would match more of the Gibson sound. The PRS is way more versatile and comfortable to play. Can't go wrong with either guitar though. And even a Gibson studio is totally USA guitar and sounds epic for a quarter of what a core PRS would cost... and sounds pro level in everyway...as does the SE 245. The SE 245 has more Gibson like tone than the CE too. The CE is like super strat... but better and fatter sounding.... and that's coming from someone who owns a American standard strat too...

  • @GeoffSweet
    @GeoffSweet 5 років тому

Only problem... That CE has a maple neck which is going to make it brighter...which it does...plus, it has a trem. You want a better comparison, get an original McCarty and do this again. There will be surprising results...

I'm struggling about which guitar to buy. I have a strat that I love and a dangelico that I happened upon. I either want a Prs s2/ce or a chapman ml3 modern. Anyone got opinions? I know I want a duel humbucker guitar that has coil split/tap for heavier downtuned riffage.

I just feel like PRS you can get a PRS a branded PRS whether be from Korea or the United States and have a be almost the exact same guitar of course pick up some electronics differ but I've never seen anything less than top quality out of either factory with Gibson if you want a true Gibson there's no other option for you then out of their US factory and their US factory clearly still has a long way to go in terms of customer relations and quality control while I've not played a Gibson I have looked at a lot of Gibson's just walking by them and I can notice imperfections in the finish and I could go on for days but can a PRS out Gibson a Gibson in more ways than one

Only reason I choose PRS is my back. Even the weight relieved Les Paul weighs much more than the regular Custom 24. Im curious about the MM1 from Ibanez but no store seems to carry them and I cant tell if its a great guitar or just the several great guitarists Ibanez hire to market their products on youtube.

Well I have 1972 LP and it sounds like an old LP. I had a 2014 LP and I couldn't get rid of it fast enough. I have a PRS 24 and 2 McNaughts, and all 3 sound a magnitude better than any Gibson, hands down. The neck mounting joint on the McNaughts are done the way a real guitar should be built. The only reason I keep my LP is because it was my first guitar back in the day but it does not get much use.
