I'm with you my puffed out brother! Is it the same thing as thinking cave diving is legitimately insane, but enjoying those stories too? Maybe (at least for me) it's the sense that I would never have the balls to attempt any of the crazy things mountain climbers or cave divers do. Or even do it enough to have the training to attempt it! So when/if they fail, it doesn't feel quite so bad that I am not as brave or thrill seeking as them? This is just a theory I came up with right this second and may not apply to you or anyone else.
I appreciate your focusing on this expedition. Being Norwegian myself, I can tell you that this expedition is the most mythical in our climbing history. And you cover it quite well, even there is more to story. Regarding the attempted rescue, it was actually a bit different. Dag Kolsrud ran for 3 days to the nearest city Skardu, with telephone connection. From there it took several days with diplomatic connections to get a helicopter to pick him up at Skardu, fly into the mountain to look for the missing climbers. One body was sighted, but that helicopter couldn’t land or pick it up. So it returned out of the area. One week a later a larger and better equipped operation was heading to the mountain, but the body was gone, probably swept away by an avalanche. There’s a book about the expedition, called ‘Trango, triump og tragedie’ It is written in Norwegian, so sorry for all you non-speakers of Norwegian, because it is one of best climbing books ever written.
@@cliffthatcher4574 You’re correct. Maybe I should have said it has a mythical status? And I know the two surviving members from the expedition. They are still climbing, but more sport climbing than alpine climbing now.
Your one year mile stone I contribute to your 1) Your voice which enhances the material 2) The haunting back ground music at just the right audio level 3) Your writing style which infrequently drops nuggets of your personality 4) The "Goldie locks" length of your videos Stick with the winning strategy that got you to your first anniversary for many more
Congrats on your 1 year anniversary of telling some of the most fascinating mountaineering stories on the web. I bet you'll reach 100k subs this year. You deserve it!
Not big mountain guy but the look of these ones is so fantasy-esque and cracked-out. Even the base of them is just smooth rock like some imposing Hollywood set piece. Definitely a cool looking place to fall to your death in..
Congrats on 1 year Morbid Midnight! 👏 I really appreciate that your quality, unsensationalised content allows the facts of the story to speak first, so the viewer can interpret events in their own way. This video, for example, reminds me how our species _Homo sapiens_ has become so incredibly successful.... because there's always a few humans who'll look at a sheer, kilometre-high granite cliff face covered in ice & snow and say "🤔... I'm going to climb that." RIP Hans & Finn 🤍
Thanks for all the good work. It’s important these story’s make it out with the diligence and professionalism you bring. Your going to save some lives with the work your doing.
Thank you for this channel showing so many different mountains and the difficulties they present. Just looking at the Trango Towers gives me anxiety. I admire those who climb these high peaks.
Another well told story about mountain climbing. I learn something in every video. What a tragic end. It is out of my ken to think of spending a month on a vertical face of a mountain, and to think of weeks of descent is unbelievable because during all that time, those climber could not lose the highest level of focus during practically every single minute. Mountain climbers have my full respect.
Conngratulations on your success. Love the stories. Always followed mountaineering. Although I am 73 and have knee and hip replacements I took a tour of northern Pakistan and got as far as Skardu and the foot of Nanga Parbat and the Kailish Valleys. Extraordinary.
Congratulations on your anniversary! I’ve got at least fifteen hours of watch time in the last few days, so, nothing else I need to say about the quality of the content!
Congrats on your one year anniversary, I don't know why but that background music adds quite a bit of creepiness to the stories you tell. Kudos as well on your John List story, your mom's recollections were quite fascinating and brought a perspective to the story I'd never heard before.
Stumbled on your channel and the 2011 Annapurna disaster video after a my guide of the Annapurna Circuit told us about the 2014 snowstorm disaster that killed some unfortunate trekkers and climbers in the Annapurna region. Immediately watched a couple other videos after that end subscribed since your storytelling got my hooked. Keep up the great work.
Congratulations on your one year anniversary! I'm obsessed with your mountaineering content. I'd never even known anything like Cerro Torre or the Trango Towers existed before watching your channel. Thank you for introducing me to a fascinating and foreign world of extreme adventure and risk. I look forward to each of your videos, and I hope you continue to make them for years to come.
A relative of mine was on the 1977 expedition. He was a photographer as well, wrote several books. I was at a family event, early 90s and asked him about Great Trango. He said his climbing in the Sierra Nevadas was the perfect training, because it was half rock climbing and half mountain climbing.
Yes I agree with you. The size & slippery smooth face of the Trango Towers makes them a nightmare to climb. There are so many unfortunate things that can happen to u during a summit attempt. In this case they successfully summited the East face but then died descending. Keep making these great videos!!!
It’s midnight , been been working hard for hours , now snuggled up in bed listening to the soothing morbid music & in for the perfect treat before dozing off, Thankyou MM.
Love your channel. I find these stories not only sad and terrible for the families of the victims but also fascinating how eager alpinists are to achieve such things as climbing mountains.

I think your videos are a good length, too, cos I have time to sit and watch easily between tasks are home. I am in New Zealand, so here you go, this is how far you are reaching. Keep up the fabulous work 👌
As a climber I do appreciate you putting in some effort to understand the technical side of things - so many of these disaster channels put in 0 effort to understand the sport and the risk factors beyond a surface level It would be interesting and help to see some videos on lower peaks - there's a whole different set of risks that average hikers are more likely to go out into without proper preparation. The white mountains of new hampshire are notorious for being deceptively dangerous and claiming the lives of unprepared hikers - even as recently as last week
Congratulations! I only recently discovered you. This isn't a topic I was previously watching, but you have made me interested You do a great job of telling the stories in an interesting way. You'll be hitting 100,000 subs in no time!

Mount Thor on Baffin Island, the west face is the longest vertical drop on Earth: 4,101 feet (the better part of a mile!) straight down. Actually, the slope is steeper than vertical, since the face is actually a 105-degree overhang. Another nearby peak, Mt. Asgaard is also of similar difficulty as Trango Towers. All of them are ridiculously difficult summits and each one is as dangerous as the next. Cerro Torre and Mt. Fitzroy also present similar challenges.
@@MorbidMidnight The thing about Mt. Thor is it can be relatively easily climbed from the east slope. Most people are unaware of it the mountains in Baffinland because of the extremely remote and difficult travel to get to them. The Karakorum's are positively bustling comparatively speaking.
