Good afternoon, Norman; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments. I have always liked the livery of those two cars. I have a coffee mug from the owner of the cars. Several years ago, he handed a pair to my coffee drinking mate Marne as the #5 came thru. I would still like to tour the interiors including the dome. That hop has been there for a long time. As the trin crosses West Street, there is a slight drop to bring the train onto a short bridge over an irrigation ditch. CB&Q planned that crossing many years ago and it is still effective. I just hope that the gent at the desk of the "Warren Henry" didn't have a coffee or other libation spilled as they bounced. Anyway, have a great afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good late morning Mike! 11:45 AM here. Just now seeing this. I saw Kelly come through on number 6 late last night on KJ’s channel. He had to have slept real fast to be on number 5 this coming back through! I didn’t realize they would do that quick of a turn. Maybe I missed something! Have a great day out your way Sir! It’s warm here and almost as hot as yesterday! It was 112 here yesterday! Humidity was much worse yesterday than so far today! Have a great day! Mark in Iowa.
Good afternoon, Mark; (it's so close that I'll call it afternoon anyway). I thank you for looking in along with the comments. As to Marne's video, Check out the Aug. 25th video. Same. I addressed that to him over coffee this morning. I think he will get the correct video posted. GAAK! 112? That's too hot! I'll try to shovel a little more of this your way. Hope that you have a comfortable and cooler afternoon back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Yeah good evening Mike I watched your video earlier today. I was distracted all day at work so I'll get a comment right now. Sounds like it was just another day and everything. I love that guy in the background. And you know the zephyr is doing what the zephyr does. It was really hot like you know what today. We had 100° today. And it was terrible!
Good morning, Robert; Thanks for dropping by as well as the comments. Ah yes, the start of another school year. I understand quite well. It was a decent yet normal day at the depot. Yikes! You have the heat dome there now. I'll try to send some of this decent weather back your way. That's just way too hot for where you are at. Anyway, have a great Wednesday. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good evening, Deiana; Thanks for stopping by as well as the comment. This pair is one of the cleanest sets I have encountered. I would like to see more of them out here. Have a great evening over there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good evening, Lou; I thank you for stopping by as well as the comments. There's always something at the depot. LOL! Keeps me coming back. Have a great evening back there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good morning, David; Thank you for stopping by and the comments. I was happy to see that sunrise sky today. A lot better than the dull cloudy sunrise of yesterday. Have a great Tuesday up there. Please take care and stay safe!
Good afternoon, Jean; I thank you for tuning in as well as the comments. Yep. That set of brakes squealed both incoming and then as they departed. The departing squeal was due to rolling brake tests that had to be done. There were two of those. That set of cars are some I would like to tour the interiors of including the dome. Couldn't afford to travel more than the length of the platform in them but just wow. Hope that you have a great afternoon and evening back there. Please take care. stay cool, and safe!
Good morning Mike from 81 sunny mid Tenn. Heading to the mid 90 s today, hotter the rest of the week. Your 50 s temp sound great, your sunrise sky is hard to beat.
Good afternoon, Ben; Thank you for dropping by as well as the comments. I'll send some of this weather your way just as soon as I am done with it. LOL! I think it is moving your direction as it pushes that heat dome out over the Atlantic. We all have had enough of the heat for one summer. That was another Colorado sunrise. I liked it as well. Have a great Tuesday afternoon and evening back there. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good morning Mike! I have been in the thermal imaging business for 45 years from air and land. It would have been a snap to find a hot bearing. I'm just too far away! 7:54
Good morning, Dennis; Thank you for dropping by along with the comments. I know the thermal imaging systems along the ROW are pretty accurate. I learned to use one while at Wester Sugar to identify hot spots throughout the plant and systems. We didn't have that available to us in the Navy, but we did have a crayon known by the trade name "Templ-Stick" that came in various heat ranges. I also used those to assist in bringing bearings to a specific temperature for interference fits. They were great for checking the heat range while welding some various alloys for certified work. As a firefighter, I also learned to use the back of my hand to locate hot spots. I am sure when the Zephyr arrived in Denver, the mechanical crew was informed and checked closer into the situation. Anyway, have a great Tuesday afternoon and evening. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good morning, Mike. Another interesting day in the life of the Zephyr. Looks like your temps are going to be mid-80s. We have heavy fog & a bit cooler temps. Enjoy your day, remembering to stay safe & take care.
Good afternoon, Jim; Thanks for dialing in as well as the comments. That was the second time I watched them checking axles for hanging brakes and warm bearings. The last time the car was back into a siding east of the station and left for replacement of the axle. Yep. The prognosticators are calling for mid 80s today with a jump tomorrow. No rain included. I'll settle for the cooler temperatures. It keeps this up and the winter clothing will be back in play. LOL! I'll try to shovel this weather off your way just as soon as I am done with it. In the meantime, have a great Tuesday back there. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good morning Mike!! Nice train this morning! I’m sure the folks in the Patrick Henry cars are having the ride of their life. That would be fun! I did see the third sleeper, 32050, that car has been in Beech Grove for quite some time and is one of their latest releases. It’s good to see Amtrak coming through on their promises to get all of the Superliners back on the rails. Also, I am hearing the Capitol Limited is going to transition to single level equipment, that will free up 4 each of Superliner coaches and sleepers and 2 cross country cafe cars. Next they need to get the extra axle count cars off the Saluki trains and maybe we can get the LD trains back to better capacity. Did you see the big change for the Texas Eagle? The through cars to LAX on Sunset Limited days are now going to be extra cars on the days that they run starting Sept. 3. So 3 days a week the Texas Eagle will have 2 sleepers and 3 coaches, that’s a nice step in the right direction too. Well I better get going, hope you have a wonderful day. Thank you as always for bringing us #5!! Aaron and Shannon
Good morning, Aaron & Shannon; Thank you for stopping by as well as the comments and info. I had read about the Cap. LTD going to single level equipment. I am hoping to see more coach cars on the Zephyrs. I didn't check the passenger loading for this #5 but I am sure it was at least 85%. I did hear something about the Texas Eagl. That is good news for that train as well. I know the SWC is sporting extra coached recently. The BSA jamboree is long over but lots of folks taking a stretch in Ft. Madison. Maybe they will share some of those. LOL! They are also opening the Sunset Limited route to the east from NOLA next month as well. Only to Mobile right now but it will soon reach to JAX. There is still a bad taste in some mouths from the accident many years ago down there. Time does heal though. Have a great Tuesday. Please take care and stay safe!
@@MikeJensen-jt9yr yep, the SWC is looking good these days. The not so good news for it is they will soon be losing a sleeper as the extra cars from the AutoTrain, released during its low season, are cycled back for its high season. I know Rail Passengers has been lobbying for a lot of these improvements, it would be nice to see their other goals of a daily Sunset Limited and Cardinal. Have a wonderful day Mike!
Good afternoon, Carolyn; Thank you for dropping by as well as the comments. It has been a very nice day so far. It is a relatively quiet day today. I did have to return to my optical office for a rebuild on a set of sunglasses. The prescription was right, but the lenses should have had a mirrored finish, and they didn't. I tried them yesterday afternoon and the sunlight hurt my eyes. They will make them right. I hope that you have a great Tuesday afternoon and evening down there. Please take care and stay safe! 😎👋👍🦗👌
Hi, Adam: Thank you for tuning in and the comments. I appreciate it. I do hope the entire train makes it out there to you. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
Good morning, Gerald; Thank you for tuning in along with the comments. Nice to read that you are having a nice day down there. This weather is a great change from what we have had. Those folks had driven down from Nebraska to take a ride to the western slope for a vacation. I hope that they are enjoying it all. It was a first-time event for them. Anyway, have a great Tuesday down there. Please take care and stay safe!
Goodmorning, James; Thanks for dropping by as well as the comments. That is the second time I have watched the conductors' doing checks on the trucks of a car. This time there was not a responder from BNSF involved. Have not checked to see if they are in Denver where the mechanical crew can do a better check. Hope that you have a great Tuesday up there. Please take care and stay safe!
As of 6:46 it's doing 60mph and must have rolled through several fault detectors since then without alarm sounding. Conductors on freights carry crayons that melt at specific high temperatures to check for alarmingly bad bearings. You'd think an IR thermometer would do better and you can check each axle and brake as you walk by.
I did not follow on with the #5. Usually don't unless the scanner alerts me to something interesting. The crayons you mentioned were a vital tool as a certified welder. We carried several temperature range "Templ-Sticks" on the job site. Preheat and post heat temps were rather vital in welding of various alloys. IR equipment wasn't always available but most welding supply stores carry "Templ-stick" thermal crayons. I still have a number of them in my welding set boxes. I am of the mind that the ping on that axle was from a hung brake shoe. There were two rolling brake checks accomplished as the Zephyr departed and the brake squeal was readily heard.
Good afternoon Mr Mike jensen I'm Damien I like amtrak trains too I like model trains maybe you should watch one of them and I liked that train you filmed this morning
Good afternoon, Damien; I thank you for looking in as well as the comments. That is very cool that you also like model trains as well as AMTRAK. I do watch model trains. The ones I am into are the live steam versions that run on 7 & 1/2 inch gauge tracks. I do own some LGB train stock and am building a G scale Shea two-cylinder logging engine that will operate on steam. Havea great Tuesday afternoon and evening. Please take care and stay safe!

Hi Mike- when the passengers were getting on I noticed the suitcases which looked like “the gorilla luggage “ Samsonite with the hard cover & “train case”. Don’t make them like that anymore. TY for 5. Hope got into Denver okay even with barring issues. Busy next 2 days with Dr. appts - just take care.
Good morning, Cheryl; Thanks for dialing in as well as the comments. They are good Nebraska farmers. I did notice the carry-ons as well. They are headed to the western slope for a holiday period. It was a first-time event for them. I hope they enjoy the trip. You are right that that type of luggage is a rare sight anymore. I have not checked as to their whereabouts with the Zephyr. After listening to the rolling brake checks as they departed, they shouldn't have had any more issues with the hanging brakes or warm bearings. Still deciding if I want to drive to Bushnell, NEB. on Thursday or not to catch the "Big Boy" as it heads east from Cheyenne. If a video appears then you know I went. I may wait to catch it as it returns to Cheyenne in October. Have a great Tuesday. Please take care, stay cool, and safe!
