- On this week's episode of Onboard Lifestyle, the Captain continues the mast preparation for our standing rigging upgrade. With 75% of the crew up in the States the basik mood is definitely different onboard, but the projects must continue, even with some wild Panama weather rolling through. Come back next time to see how things progress...see you then!

Fate is a wonderful thing. When that hit with your position at the berth you were facing into it. Could not have been more perfect in that regards. Unlike those boats on the other side of the pier which were facing the other way and therefore end on to that storm front. That would have made it very much worse than it ending up being. Sure, a couple of shades god destroyed but in the big scheme of things. That is nothing (although, yes, I can remember watching the video where Lynn spent hours cutting and making those shades so lovely) They can be replaced. As long as noone got hurt or injured it is good. Material things although can be sentimental can still be replaced. People cannot. I hope that Lynn is recovering well with her family and is getting lots better. Keep safe and take care. Thank you for your efforts in making the videos and uploading for us to see. It is greatly appreciated :)
Lovely video ❤
WOW!! That takes the old salt advert to a new level!! “When it rains, it pours!”
👍 basic Basik maintenance 😎
All in stride , Sailor!!
I see that you made the right move in moving the VHF Marine antenna bracket higher. In VHF radio use, Higher is better. Your RF will go further. Smart Move.
Sometimes I forget watching you build this boat and then it comes back to me Teal you are Da Man
I was thinking he might want to build temp wing that they can put up and take down for shade... If it is made out of Fiberglass can be painted to match the boat, and I would think it would be much stronger... Doing that we can play the appoxie drink game again.. LOL
Great to see the master boat expert at work. I've been following you from day one, And you never fail to amaze me.
Just another squall in paradise! 😎
You should use aldine for untreated aluminium. Where you just drilled. Also start using your middle finger for drilling better control.
new anchor light bulb while its down
Many times on the helicopters we will put a barrier tape between the stainless brackets and aluminum skin to prevent the corrosion you saw on your mast. The barrier tape looks like packing tape but it is much more durable. Some people call it anti-chafe tape or dissimilar metal tape. It is very thin and NOT what some refer to as 100 mph tape or NASCAR tape which is much thicker. We’ve also tried a two part sealant between the two metals with very disappointing results. That seemed to trap water in voids causing mor damage than using nothing at all.
another blessing ???? The boat got a great washing !!!!
replacing.... always a good thing. That rain and wind, good for a great shower. It would definitely scour the skin and clean the hair follicles. LOL
While you have the mast down, it might be a good idea to add insulating plastic or fiber washers between your new stainless washers and the mast. Some also coat the area where they come in contact with a coat of epoxy to break that dissimilar metal direct contact
you guys are awesome so real and authentic
glad your safe bud pretty strong winds2 second shower clean to the bone lol
I have an LG washer and I live in Florida. The air is very humid and I noticed green coating in the wire connections. The machine would not run so I sprayed the green coating with contact cleaner. The washer began to run normally.
That squall was like a mini tropical storm with it's intensity. I left my companionway open one day while doing laundry. A Florida squall came thru and all I could think about was how much water in the cabin I was going to come back to. Fortunately, the wind and dodger kept the rain out. I brought more water in on the bottom of my feet than came in during the rain. Now it's pretty much heat or air conditioning with no real "open hatches" season. Last week we had 8" of snow on the docks and 20 degrees. Today is was out in a t-shirt and shorts and it was about 70 with a low in the mid 40's tonight.
I am impressed with the battery powered drill motor handling with ease a 1/2" bit. Those new flats look good on that pin. Galvanic corrosion is in its prime with dissimilar metals and add some salt atmosphere for growth. Bigger hammer does the trick, good show Teal, I do like your attention to minute detail.
Good idea taking out the play in that pin/s. Thanks for the video, personally I love Project vids, it is what brought me into your story years ago when you first started the rebuild. Can’t wait to see your Eastern run into aqua blue waters and sandy beaches ! Oh, the food at the begining, wow !
So impressive! Were also refitting a 65 power catamaran, and its amazing to see how others are tackling these big projects. Thanks for sharing your journey!
Great job, Teal at least you beat the rain.👍🏻💕🐾
Frankly just change everything at the top of the mast to prevent further climbing in the future, especially the light and lens, and fit a lighting rod!
great, couple of screws and a rain. exciting
Glad the mast was on the ground with all that lightening. But that was a nasty squall. Bet your missing a good spread like last week.
Teal is there anyway you can put some nylon washers between the stainless washer and the Aluminum mast to avoid the dissimilar metals?
Or are you 6 months behind still and your in the BVI's????
Man, that squall was pretty intense.
Tef gel type of product and UV stabilised nylon washers and spacers work great on mast corrosion issues.
Sail on
Cheers
Nasty weather. Glad you got through it with only some sun shade damage. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
Teal, Check out the recent video the Gone With the Wynns posted reviewing products from a boat show in Amsterdam. It featured some standing rigging stress gauges with electronic monitoring / warnings which I thought were quite innovative. It was pointed out that they are particularly useful on Cats which can’t heel to relieve the wind load as guide when to reef the sails.
Very expensive!
@ Not if you are a UA-cam influencer and they sponsor you 🤔
Hold on man! 😮
The ladies need return ASAP!😺 Repairs are looking good Teal!😊
There are a variety of products that you can use to help dissimilar metal corrosion. Tef Gef, Duralac, lanocoat and don’t require a whole lot of effort. Something is better than nothing
La grasa de silicón sirve en esos casos de corrosión entre dos metales distintos?
One of my favorite shows.... Thanks....
Great video Teal! Tks.
Having tat mast down sure makes repairs so much easier.
I loved the music during the montage midway through the video.
With as many lightening strikes as there are in Panama, having that spare VHF antenna mount in place might have come in handy if the primary gets completely blown off as they do. Our boat suffered two strikes in Guatemala and it’s not a fun experience! 😊. SV Zia
Teal, looking over ones glasses while drilling, defeats the protection of the glasses. Safety first.
If you use some box tape, or even Scotch tape between dissimilar metals there should be no reaction. We actuality used Scotch tape when I was a crewchief on attack helicopters in the military. Another quick fix is a good layer of clear nail polish. The polish can also be used as a light duty thread locker too.
When using the tape, cover the screw holes. Then when you screw it in, the tape also covers the s.s. from contacting the aluminum threads in the mast.🤔
Good video
Teal, Great video but you forgot an update on Linh's ankle injury
Groovy episode with perfect sailboat life weather. LOL!
The hands of a master craftsman back at it.
On the LG combo, the pump should be in the front at the bottom on most of them. And it also has a filter right next to it.or at the back in the same spot. You might want to check that, Neil. Good luck
You will end up with dissimilar metal corrosion again.
Like someone else here said.
Tef gel type of product and UV stabilised nylon washers and spacers work great on mast corrosion issues.
Now is the time to do it whilst on the ground.
Break Out Another Thousand
You should have an impact driver, inexpensive and better at breaking frozen bolts snd screws loose.
Everyone got their jogging in. Been there, done that.
Be safe Sir have to Suck by yourself and this Storm ⛈ doesn’t help. Hope you install a New LED white Light 💡 on top of the Mast so later you don’t have to be up so High
On top of the mast ( highest point ) you need a lightning rod or approved reflector.
We're in yacht insurance and they started to only cover lightning damages when a rod is mounted- tevise your project whilst its easy on land. Better be aware. Check your policy. We have had many lightining claims here in asia and the damages are more costly than people predict.
We use electrical tape on the back of the stainless steel fittings to break the bond of dissimilar metals. The tape just goes in the spots where the aluminum and stainless touch each other.
Very good idea and it is time saving. Well done
I would do that for everything but the radio antenna mount. Very good grounding of the bracket is essential to better ground plane efficiency for better rx/tx of signals.
@@WaterFaucet24Bracket is already grounded by contact with the coax shield/SO239 shell.
@@fs7453-il correct, but more grounding is always better when it comes to RF. Especially a huge piece of metal way up in the air supporting the sails (mast).
I use cut milk jug plastic. Same idea.
Linh isn’t going to be happy having to repair all of the shades!
Aluminum wants a slow bit. And frequently dip the tip of the bit to keep everything cool. A cup of water is as effective, well, almost as effective as cutting oil. And a whole lot cheaper. Also, for some reason Aluminum doesn't play well with wire brushes, drill bits, sand paper, etc that has been used on other metals. I honestly don't know why, just that it is so.
Replace that anchor lite with a tricolor/anchor combo.
Do you not use Duralac or similar on your mast fittings? I have always used it for dis similar metals and been pleased with the results, certainly none of that corrosion.
❤👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hola Teal, and absentees.
I don't call that kind of weather "ugly." Storms are so cool, at least, if you are safe and secure, in a marina or good anchor.
Looks like you were not the only one with last minute run back to the boat. Get yourself some safety glasses. Are you replacing all dissimilar metal washers?
Donate for a Dream
How's bachelor life for now Teal? Good job.
Teal, Who taught you your excellent work habits?
When replacing your standing rigging beware the cheap Chinese stuff . It does not last . Had a freind loose the rig when it let go at only 3 years old .
You can still run if you have to.
Tefgel
When the time is right, you have to Drill Baby Drill
🙂Nice, I got your reference.
More work for Lynn when she gets back not your fault good luck 😂
🚨✌️💪👌🚨
shame but fixable
The drill works better in ‘forward’ Teal 😂 all the love You!
That is the frame rate of the camera that makes it look like it's in the wrong direction.
