As an Xperia 1 V owner this test wasn't so surprising, their auto mode is a hit or miss. I hope Sony takes this as a wake up call to improve their software in the future (Although I doubt they will). Great video though!
it not a phone for the average user who just want to shoot auto all the time and expect that to be the best quality photos the phone can offer. The whole point of buying an xperia phone is for their manual mode (the dslr experience) so no wonder their auto mode is half baked
I know these fotos were taken with the auto mode camera to limit the variables of the test, but I wonder who would come out on top if someone took the Best foto possible with each camera (pro mode on samsung and sony experia for inatance) and then see which one (at its Best shot) would be in the top 3 🤔🤔
It would be super interesting to run the same test with the other phones (well not the iphone) and a well dialed in GCam build. Id bank on big differences
Next year should also add video quality as well. One subject photo series don’t define an overall best camera. Yes it’s time consuming but a bit miss leading as to best smartphone camera.
Hi Tom, loved the video, I've been trying to make a choice between a pixel 8, a 7a and an 8a (or even 7 pro)? I'm just interested in the best camera perforamce but also don't mind paying a little less if I can, what would you recommend?
I'd really like to see him compare ultra-wide photos as well. I use those a lot for work, so it'll be interesting to see those results. Also, I don't get the obsession people have with portrait mode.
I must have had an issue with my pixel 7, when I first got it it was great, but then photos really started to degrade, portrait photos were blurry, and selfies put like a pasty smoothed skin tone on me which didn't look real at all
Do you even know what you are talking about? When talking about the Find X6 Pro and night mode shot it actually is one of the majority of phones that gives you control over such shots. As you can disable night mode or jump to pro mode and let Hasselblad colours take over. So its exactly that example where you have the control over such shots. Did you try the Find X6 Pro even? Xiaomi, Honor, Huawei, Vivo, Sony and others also allow this.
I agree with your conclusion. Whilst it is a good test, it can be vastly improved with a lot more variety in photo subjects. In fact, some could say they slightly rigged the test, because all three shots have a dark skin tone subject with orange being the main accent color (clothes or surroundings)
@@wyterabitt2149 It's more subtle. Brighter colors like orange tend to look better in more vivid higher contrast photos. Some phone manufacturers also automatically apply skin lightening, which will make all skin tones paler (this is preferred in Asian markets). This works poorly for accurate skin tone production, esp if you are whiter or darker
@@miscwork-qb7pd Makes it an even better test, hiding these things by making a test that wouldn't show them would be rigging the test. Including the orange shows that a camera isn't just pumping up contrast on colours alone to look good as this would look weird if it was a normal photo with orange included. And having a skin tone difficult to reproduce accurately for all cameras shows how it deals with them, and helps highlight any bad cameras that lighten skin.
@@wyterabitt2149 What you like isn't necessarily what others like. Why do you think skin lightening is used? The Asian market loves it. Feel free to call them wrong if you like. Having more variety of skin tones and colors in your photo comparisons will give you better understanding in the types of environments certain phones work better in. Having only one accent color and skin tone biases the test towards a certain type of photo reproduction
To be fair, the Xperia is known to be a comparatively poor (although for most normal people still ok in nearly all situations) as a point and shoot. It's almost pointless putting it into the competition, other than the random chance it somehow does really well and confuses everyone. It's entire thing is about it having little processing when you want it to not, and extensive manual control with a "professional" experience. Which is probably why people want you to review it. Also it's interesting that the 7a does so well, when the sensor it uses had never been used by Google before this phone. Or since. They have great software, but the results can't be down to them having so long to optimise the software for the hardware it's using.
Amazing video love your take on this. For Me Pixel 7a was the winner in Blind Test. Waiting anxiously to get hand on it. Hopefully i will win the 7a as waiting from 2 weeks checking every day community for update on the winner 😊🫶🏻🤞🏻
I love the Oppo Find X6 Pro but you can only buy it in China. There's no global version released. Hope they release the X7 Ultra globally. Video will suck, but you can't beat a collab with Hasselblad.
10:35 with the S2X Ultras, you get great pictures even better than the Pro Maxs, if you tune the settings. HDR is a bad feature to use for any video whatever.
Blind tests are the only ones, that can be told to be somehow reliable. It's the same thing with Whisky (Scotch vs Japanese) and many other products. When people know, what they're testing right now, this destroys immediately the whole result. The marketing simply did a perfect job and makes them automatically prefer, what they personally prefer.
My main problem with the test is that the only subject has a very dark skin tone, which in my country (Poland) maybe a dozen people have. It would be great if an additional person with a light skin tone could be introduced next year.
Tom's point at the end of the video is important here. What about landscape and other types of photo's? I don't personally take photos of mkhd but every singe photo in his blind test has him in it! Probably tells us something about mkhd.
@@ItsTomRichOn 6:23 "My daylight, lowlight, and portrait results", like, I want to check out for myself the photos of everyone's smartphone blind test.
Remember this isn't a pure photo test. It's am auto mode, point and shoot test. And the Xperia isn't really about point and shoot. It's competent and that's the best you can say about it, last place with point and shoot is where everyone would expect it to be. The Xperia is primarily about being a professional photography experience, with all manual controls and no AI messing around with it.
Doing all this serves a purpose; these photos still resemble oil paintings with edge sharpening and noise reduction. Thanks to ProRAW, we can at least invest time in undoing whatever smartphone companies claimed to have progressed so far.
The only thing this test tests is how well the phone exposes black people on a photo. And with no surprise, the pixels were on front because all they did this year was better black skin exposure on the imaging processor and new Ai functions on Google photos for pixel.
iPhone low light problem that has existed since iPhone 12... if you ever try taking low light photo of Asians in low light conditions. Their skin turns out ORANGE! Always beware before you share photos in low light that has an asian in the group! I was very disappointed iPhone 15 Pro Max has NOT fixed this issue. I mean, if I stared at it long enough, the orange skin tone has reduced somewhat for the IP15, but when put side by side to S23u, P8P, P7P, it absolutely stands out! It's not acceptable on a flagship iPhone. Pixel needs to have more profiles or color settings. The detault makes the photos too flat and unnatural sometimes. At least S23u has dialed down the over-saturated / over-processed look. Waiting for the s24u to arrive soon!
This guy seems hella biased towards the Iphone... And then saying Iphone 15 should perform similarly to Pixel 7A is a crazy thing to say because that Iphone is at least 2x the price of the Pixel...
@@ItsTomRich yes, pixel won the first, second and third place, why would you say that they are bad? But the whole video you tried to justify the iPhone. At least the last place in regular photo was the regular 15 and not the 15 pro

Hmm, why does it need to be though? Totally get keeping most of the photos this style of setting, but plenty of people shoot photos outside and it could easily be done on a day with stable lighting. Great to have you on the channel man 😁
Surprised with pixel camera performance..
Really good..Exposure,dynamic range, the color tone,contrast..No doubt..Pixel nail it in photography segment..With that price it offered it is really good bang nothing u can complaint 🎉🎉🎉
Surprise that the pixel 7a wins it overall 😮
As an Xperia 1 V owner this test wasn't so surprising, their auto mode is a hit or miss. I hope Sony takes this as a wake up call to improve their software in the future (Although I doubt they will). Great video though!
it not a phone for the average user who just want to shoot auto all the time and expect that to be the best quality photos the phone can offer. The whole point of buying an xperia phone is for their manual mode (the dslr experience) so no wonder their auto mode is half baked
Just switched over to iPhone 15 Pro Max. This is my first iPhone since 2012 and I have to say I am quite impressed with the camera system.
Agreed tbh!
Hi Tom, loved the video, I've been trying to make a choice between a pixel 8, a 7a and an 8a (or even 7 pro)? I'm just interested in the best camera perforamce but also don't mind paying a little less if I can, what would you recommend?
fun fact google has a whole department dedicated to fix dark skin tone for their phones
Always interesting to see phones defy expectation!
The Xperia is great in manual modes , but auto and basic were pretty bad , newest software update has improved them
I'd really like to see him compare ultra-wide photos as well. I use those a lot for work, so it'll be interesting to see those results. Also, I don't get the obsession people have with portrait mode.
Sony is sort of a DSLR. It has an auto setting. But you really shouldn't use it 😅
I must have had an issue with my pixel 7, when I first got it it was great, but then photos really started to degrade, portrait photos were blurry, and selfies put like a pasty smoothed skin tone on me which didn't look real at all
Fell in love with the Google Pixel 7a after watching the video
That's not what "rigging" a test is. Unless you are suggesting that dark skin tones and orange colours are something phones should be good at?
So the google pixels made top 3... idek if im surprised by that or expected it, but the pixels are beast of phones(the best imo)
i just subscribed you through this video, amazing commentary man; great
Welcome man 😁
Great commentary my dude
🥹
Great video my friend! How do we enter for the pixel 7a?
The earnings video and the P8P review have details 🙏🙌🏼
Funny how the 7a got more votes than the 8pro
I know haha
All hail to the PIXEL phones🙌
Amazing video love your take on this. For Me Pixel 7a was the winner in Blind Test. Waiting anxiously to get hand on it. Hopefully i will win the 7a as waiting from 2 weeks checking every day community for update on the winner 😊🫶🏻🤞🏻
Interested to see some Huawei phones... P60 could be interesting
Does it used CRD model of ANOVA?
Thanks Tom - very interesting
I like Pixel but when you're using it to other regions. There's a limitation, like on it's 5G connection.
This is a very interesting video!
bro had a whole ultrawide monitor and a set of good speaker. Yet he's watching on his 6.7inch smartphone 💀
oh, wait 6.1
Blind tests are the only ones, that can be told to be somehow reliable.
It's the same thing with Whisky (Scotch vs Japanese) and many other products. When people know, what they're testing right now, this destroys immediately the whole result. The marketing simply did a perfect job and makes them automatically prefer, what they personally prefer.
this guy deserve 100k subs so subscribe !
Pixel 7a camera is so perfect ❤
I enjoyed watching this...
Anyone ever told you, you look like a younger or slimmer version of Mark Rober?
Haha haven’t heard this one before
My main problem with the test is that the only subject has a very dark skin tone, which in my country (Poland) maybe a dozen people have.
It would be great if an additional person with a light skin tone could be introduced next year.
True, still there is a lot to judge based on while ignoring skin tone.
@@Wisdom.Phoenix agreed. I think that the scenarios that showed that terrible hdr cutout effect in low light mode were especially insightful.
The Pixel still would've won
How is the s23 better than s23 ultra?
It uses the same camera sensor as the s22.. So they have optimised it more.
Tom's point at the end of the video is important here. What about landscape and other types of photo's? I don't personally take photos of mkhd but every singe photo in his blind test has him in it! Probably tells us something about mkhd.
Cameras on Phones are more about quick out of pocket shots than anything else. And in my opinion nothing works better than pixel phones for this.
But honestly the disparity in vote counts this year is not much. Whic you can't go wrong with any of the phones here
He should pass the winner as the next year contendant
"Give us manual control" best joke coming from a iphone user😂😂😂
Where's your blind smartphone camera test? I don't see in discription.
Huh?
@@ItsTomRich You said that you made the comparisons tho. No? 🤔
@@mrliberox I think I mentioned other camera comparisons. I do lots of videos on smartphone cameras but I haven’t ran a blind test like MKBHD’s
@@ItsTomRichOn 6:23 "My daylight, lowlight, and portrait results", like, I want to check out for myself the photos of everyone's smartphone blind test.
Im so surprised to see the sony xperia at dead last bro, i heard they dont use ai in there photos tho...so idk
@@wyterabitt2149 oh ok I understand
Consistency is the strength of Google Pixel.
Bro 6:41 sounded like your editor duplicated the audio😅
11:16 there is in most gcam ports
Iphone is only champ at apple fanboy channel
14:12 I personally can't stand the warm white balance of the iphones photo here, tbh.
Doing all this serves a purpose; these photos still resemble oil paintings with edge sharpening and noise reduction. Thanks to ProRAW, we can at least invest time in undoing whatever smartphone companies claimed to have progressed so far.
Real mfs use a Samsung flagship with GCam to get the best of both worlds.
Regular iPhone 15 was the worst in daytime and 15 Pro was slightly higher,
Pixel 7a best photos than any other camera
I love pixel
mkbhd sponsored by apple and google lol
Google pixel lovers❤
"Apple fanboy Reacts: MKBHD Blind Smartphone Camera Test!"
What I was saying the whole time how much I love the pixel 🤣
@@ItsTomRich yes, pixel won the first, second and third place, why would you say that they are bad? But the whole video you tried to justify the iPhone.
At least the last place in regular photo was the regular 15 and not the 15 pro
Stop calling people isheep 😂
it's not about light exposure man! Pixel phones are just more detailed with more accurate and natural colours.
you should try and do a more scientific version, and throw in a few real cameras
Every person/photographer who is going to find out the best photo in pro in normal photo in portraits you can all continue this till 100 years from now cauae neither of them will never be perfect... My opinion they came really along side vs dslr's but neither of them will be perfect... Those are smartphones and not pro cameras..
Personally I think Iphone needs to step up in the still photo department. Its been horrible for a while and google is not sharing treats here. Video is good but photos its horrible 90% of the time. You spoke about true tone for darker skins etc why is apple not adopting such? should we say Iphone is for lighter skins alone? Stop defending this nonsense from Iphone and let them step up there game. Am a proud honor of both smartphones but no way am taking a still photo from an Iphone. Its just plain horrible
green button
These brands are making phones for common people
Not for professionals
So the test was fare
I got an iPhone in every category
the 7a has a new sensor in the 7a so your breakdown is void
😂I mean the phone's name is literally *PIXEL*
You'd kinda expect that it's great at handling... PIXELS🤷🏻♂️.
Most of the year the grand winner for World Mobile Photography Award came from Sony Xperia user by Dominika Koszowska. The real photographer know the real art of photography sorry...Say no to too artificial and over process image!!!!
My S22 Ultra always gives me better pictures than iPhone's flagships.
