I don't know why this isn't the standard in how to get started soloing. Makes the most sense. Start with 1 fret. Brilliant! It's so easy to get overwhelmed when first learning guitar. This sure does help keep it in a doable perspective. THANKS

You just blew my mind. Reminds me of my favourite guitarist, a guy I played with years ago; all my guitarist friends loved him; they all said the same thing: he gets so many sounds and he never moves his hands; he taught all those speed demons at the time to slow down and PLAY. Great Lesson Man!

This is a very good introduction to lead. Once you've mastered this tutorial, please explore the 'minor pentatonic' scale. There are 5 interlinking positions, but relating to this example, is just position 1 for A minor, which uses just one extra fret. The one more fret will make the WORLD of difference. Believe me.

You could also get tabs out of magazines like Guitar World back then. In the early 90s we had tab sites like OLGA (Online Guitar Archive) but lawyers got that shut down for copyright infringement even tho most of the tabs weren’t the most accurate. But yeah, nothing like the resources youngsters have today with UA-cam.

There are only 2 words to describe this awesome video ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. No boring scales for the purists, just raw blues using your musical skills and imagination. I always found learning music notation difficult, but i can remember chord shapes without knowing what all the notes are. I have loads of shapes in my mind, and i love learning tablature which is as good as musical score.

It's a great help beside the scale playing. In the beginning it looks like the A chuck Berry scale, but with the B string note offside. But in starting to use this offside note together with the G string pull up one gets in a total new, more melodic Blues Style. It helps players to be a little unfaithful to the scales.

The semitone below thing gives it kind of a jazzy sound. I would never dare to walk the whole fret up in that way, I was too obsessed with the pentatonic positions. I'll give it a try, thank you.

Been playing and writing for forty years and found this most helpful. Even though I have played in that exact same position and scale a million times and thought I was just being lazy, ('cause I am), it's nice to see it validated. Really though; it's a nice smooth, easy and enjoyable place to just kinda groove when you don't want to clutter up your mind w/ complex bullshit. Kind of like guitar meditation.

I know most of my scales,I just cant seem to make music with them. I think using this technique at first then expanding to the scales will be very helpful. Thank you sir.
I think the secret of using the scales you know is as this video illustrates. Basically it means you can play any of the notes in any order as long as you use the notes in the scale it will work. Though this is put together in a way that makes it not frightening - no big mountain to climb - very informative but relaxed.
That's what most teachers think. The majority of the time it just does not work. Because people don't learn to listen and hear notes first, they just wind up repeating the notes over and over hoping they will somehow "magically" sound good. I do this EVERYDAY. I teach my students to hear and play without fear, then ADD the scales so they know where it all comes from and where to take it. Works every time.
I'm getting ready to start learning the guitar in a more serious way and this video was very educational in that it showed me it's not all complicated. I can see from this video if I start with small steps and then over time add one step to another and build off each step I can change those small steps into bigger and bigger steps eventually, and I will get to a point where I am more comfortable finding my way around the fret board. Tell you what. I have been playing for 50 years and fully understand scales and modes, but I use this technique all the time to play solos in any key without the drudgery of referencing scale in the middle of jamming. thats how i play, self taught. Just learned to go up and down the frets the way, incorporate bends and pull offs. Learn the sounds on the neck by ear and youll know where to begin your solo.

If most guitar teachers taught in the sane manner as Eric,I think that there would be a lot less aspiring guitarists that give up trying to learn music. This is the way I like things to be explained to me....it has to make sense to me....and he does this beautifully... He starts out with giving his student the cornerstone ...not too much information,just the primary....and then he slowly builds one more block at a time,until all of the sudden,the person has learned the whole concept!

This is a very good introduction to lead. Once you've mastered this tutorial, please explore the 'minor pentatonic' scale. There are 5 interlinking positions, but relating to this example, is just position 1 for A minor, which uses just one extra fret. The one more fret will make the WORLD of difference. Believe me.
When a Master know what they talking about, the student learns not just listening but by playing also! Thanks for such simple teaching technique but it explains the fretboard in totally different view point.

You could also get tabs out of magazines like Guitar World back then. In the early 90s we had tab sites like OLGA (Online Guitar Archive) but lawyers got that shut down for copyright infringement even tho most of the tabs weren’t the most accurate.
But yeah, nothing like the resources youngsters have today with UA-cam.

There are only 2 words to describe this awesome video ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC. No boring scales for the purists, just raw blues using your musical skills and imagination. I always found learning music notation difficult, but i can remember chord shapes without knowing what all the notes are. It's a great help beside the scale playing. In the beginning it looks like the A chuck Berry scale, but with the B string note offside. But in starting to use this offside note together with the G string pull up one gets in a total new, more melodic Blues Style. It helps players to be a little unfaithful to the scales.

Been playing and writing for forty years and found this most helpful. Even though I have played in that exact same position and scale a million times and thought I was just being lazy, ('cause I am), it's nice to see it validated. Really though; it's a nice smooth, easy and enjoyable place to just kinda groove when you don't want to clutter up your mind w/ complex bullshit. Kind of like guitar meditation.

I know most of my scales,I just cant seem to make music with them. I think using this technique at first then expanding to the scales will be very helpful. Thank you sir.
I think the secret of using the scales you know is as this video illustrates. Basically it means you can play any of the notes in any order as long as you use the notes in the scale it will work. Though this is put together in a way that makes it not frightening - no big mountain to climb - very informative but relaxed.
That's what most teachers think. The majority of the time it just does not work. Because people don't learn to listen and hear notes first, they just wind up repeating the notes over and over hoping they will somehow "magically" sound good. I do this EVERYDAY. I teach my students to hear and play without fear, then ADD the scales so they know where it all comes from and where to take it. Works every time.
I'm getting ready to start learning the guitar in a more serious way and this video was very educational in that it showed me it's not all complicated. I can see from this video if I start with small steps and then over time add one step to another and build off each step I can change those small steps into bigger and bigger steps eventually, and I will get to a point where I am more comfortable finding my way around the fret board. At least that's what I got from this video. Thanks for posting it!

I have been playing for 50 years and fully understand scales and modes, but I use this technique all the time to play solos in any key without the drudgery of referencing scale in the middle of jamming. This was a great lesson. I’m two years into this guitar and this works well as an intro to solos. As a byproduct it makes me want to learn scales.

thats how i play, self taught. Just learned to go up and down the frets the way, incorporate bends and pull offs. Learn the sounds on the neck by ear and youll know where to begin your solo.

If most guitar teachers taught in the sane manner as Eric,I think that there would be a lot less aspiring guitarists that give up trying to learn music.
This is the way I like things to be explained to me....it has to make sense to me....and he does this beautifully...
He starts out with giving his student the cornerstone ...not too much information,just the primary....and then he slowly builds one more block at a time,until all of the sudden,the person has learned the whole concept!
