Michael Andretti, these folks deserve respect in the form of an F1 team being allowed. I remember seeing Michael and Mario in Portland a couple years. What a class act.
Mike is a hard core man and love his passion for his team and racing.
This is one of your top 5 conversations.
Go Marco🏁
Mario and Mike are legend’s in racing and I hope Mike can continue his team and passion.
My first race was when I was 6 months old in 1992 at the Milwaukee Mile. Michael won that race. 🤙🏼
Two Indy car races this year at the mile
I hope and pray Indy car grows and comes back into the spotlight.
NEVER WITH ROGER "AS-------E" PENSKE !
Indycar is basically dead.
@@patrickanderson9023 not dead at all. Car count on track continues to grow and the racing is exceptional. Indycar and IMSA are the two best products on track right now and it's really not even close. I used to be a hardcore NASCAR fan but I've switched to Indy and never looked back.
@MKDorianGray Sorry bud, but this is such a BS attitude. A Motorsports fan follows all top level racing...we don't drop a series and become a fanboy of one series and then get triggered by people's criticism of thier favorite "thing".
@@DennisRoe-vw6dr Your definition of triggered must be unique. This comment section is for discussion. I disagreed with a comment and backed it up with facts. If someone doesn't want to watch Indycar then don't watch it. Doesn't affect me one bit. I don't watch NASCAR anymore and I'm sure NASCAR fans on here couldn't care less. But to make the comment that "indycar is dead" is just factually incorrect.
What special talent Michael has, outstanding 's , stay safe , congratulations !
Great conversation with a racing legend. I've never seen Michael more relaxed. Have a fantastic time at Indy, Kenny. We'll all be looking forward to some killer content!
Thank you Kenny. That was awesome
Can't wait to see you in F1 Michael. Great video Kenny
Agreed howbeit Kenny is not a F1 fan.
It’s great to hear Michael talk at length. Ty Michael and Kenny.
Awesome to see Michael like this...he has gone up in my estimation. Seemed very humble
This was so good. Should have way more views. We gotta get indycar back on the map
thx!
My favorite driver, I am 60. AJ and Mario growing up until Michael. Great memories.
Michael! As a fan since the 60s (!) I know a lot about your history, and rooted for youas both a driver and an owner. But the only time I ever saw you was at races. IT'S SO GOOD TO SEE YOU SMILE!
Hey Kenny, this is coming from a motorsports journalist of 40 years, u might even recognize my name, did Rusty in SI ... gotta tell ya, this is a BRILLIANT interview you just did. Michael pins it down, but leaves it at big question: We'll never know if Roger knew or not. But how could he not? Would Cindric EVER have done that without RP's knowledge? Andretti and Pato O'Ward... no bullshit on the issue. Wish Newgarden hadn't unnecessarily said he wasn't a liar. Raises doubts that don't need to be there.
I recognize your name and we met in passing on a few occasions. I was probably wearing a yellow Shirt and maybe hanging around Deke H. And back then also interacted Dan Luginbul (sp?)
Michael, little Al, Paul Tracy..great time to be watching CART
Class act Michael. I remember the great battles between you and Little AL.
Great interview Kenny. Reminded me of my home video I took in 1989 August 18th at Pocono of Mario and Michael Andretti in the Indy Car Pit Lane.
Awesome interview. I have been following IndyCar and watching more races each season the last few years and it is truly some of the best racing on the planet right now. On the open wheel note, Kenny I hope you are able to get Ricky Rudd on the show at some point because I am eager to hear more about the F1 dreams he had before being sucked into NASCAR. I think he had the talent to be a great open wheel racer and would love to hear his thoughts on F1 and IndyCar. Enjoying the interviews, Kenny! Keep up the great work and thanks for putting these together.
Kenny.. This is one of your best interviews. Enjoyed it very much.
Great interview Hermine! You are one hell of an interviewer, and it's great to see how your guests are so comfortable when you talk racing.
A great conversation with a legend. I loved CART/Indy Car as a kid and feel grateful to have been able to enjoy then (and now as an adult on UA-cam watching those seasons again frequently) what I think of as it's golden era, early-mid '80's-'95 with the greats like Michael and Mario, Rick Mears, Danny Sullivan, Bobby Rahal, Emo, Big and Little Al Unser, Paul Tracy, even '93 with Mansell (I know he's not a favorite in the Andretti family but that was a hell of a season) but MA was always my favorite, from the Kraco days (love the post race scene after his first ever win in Long Beach in '86 celebrating with a vey young Adrian Newey, then his race engineer) to Newman Haas he just had a combo of brilliant natural racecraft and talent and and all-in late braking gap-finding style like nobody else. Thanks for the episode Kenny and all the best to Michael this season and beyond, think it's an interesting time in IndyCar as it's arguably the best, most exciting, by far most competitive open wheel series in the world right now, and it's just not getting the audience the product deserves even as interest in racing is reaching new highs in the US (DTS etc.) Something needs to be shaken up, and my guess (and hope) is that Michael will be a prime mover of it.
Andretti would be huge in F1 with GM as an engine manufacturer
Thank You Kenny for having Michael on. Me and my grandfather bonded over watching Michael, and his dad Mario do their thing and kick some butt. I am the biggest Michael Andretti fan, and he was my favorite driver in Indycar, he was magnificent behind the wheel, and he is an awesome guy. I hope that Michael Andretti goes back to F1 and kicks butt.
in regard to promotion budget, I can't remember the last time I knew when any pre-Indy 500 race was on in advance. I occasionally have stumbled onto a race in progress while channel surfing, but haven't known ahead of time to plan on watching. That trend has only accelerated since Penske bought the series. One starts to wonder if he has decided to take the series to the grave with him.
Nothing was better than Indy cars in the 80s and 90s. Loved the drivers back then and the cars were so cool. Don’t like the cars and miss the American drivers in the series.
Other than say, Indy cars in the 60s and 70s, before the engineers took over and progressively killed the sport over the course of nearly a half-century.
Outstanding interview for both of you.
Good job guys! Thank you Kenny and Michael 🏆
CART was a great time for the series… I always rooted for Mario and Michael. Two of the greatest!
Great show Kenny. Glad you asked about the promoting
Thanks for having Michael on. Your whats good about racing Kenny
Let’s all show up at Milwaukee for 2 days this year if your close enough, that’s a start.
I'll see you there
Great interview Kenny. My algorithm doesn't suggest your content as fast as it used to. Very glad I caught this one, Better late than never. Keep up the good work!
Kenny, you had Michael Bad Ass Andretti on the show! So great to hear about his sucess and legacy. We need more like him to keep the racing world moving forward. Man I enjoyed watching him race. Thanks
Thanks Kenny! Very good interview, really enjoyed
Road America '96 was my favorite win!
Thank you. Great side of both of you guys.
This was an absolute joy to see two of my favorite racers chatting. Kenny you are a gem. Try to get Mario and Marco to do a pod with you! You know they will make it happen!
Michael, Mario, Marco.
My man, Michael!! Used to get pit passes every year for the whole weekend at Nazareth back in the 90's...amazing times! Let's go ANDRETTI F1!!
Wow big interview Kenny, well done you are just doing such great content for us all, keep up the powerhouse work, watching from Western Australia
I have had the pleasure of meeting both Michael and Mario at the St Pete Grand Prix multiple times. They are class acts. My little nephew has brought his book of racing pictures to the race every year. Mario spent over 15 minutes talking to him (he races karts) by himself. This year he wrote "James, always follow your dreams. Your dear freind, Mario". He is a fan for life. And to Kenny Wallace, thank you for these podcasts. It is really enjoyable to watch a presentation that is not an "influencer" pitching his wares. Thouroughly enjoyed this interview.
Top banana, even to a Brit like myself. Mansell is a homie of mine and he was my racing hero but thats also when I learned about the Andrettis :)
Great interview.
This was the first Kenny Wallace experience for me. What a great guy! Fantastic interview. New subscriber!
Good show Kenny! Grew up watching the Andretti's
I've been to 2 F1 races , a couple of Trans Am and 4 GTP races at Lime Rock but I have yet to be at an Indy Car race. Hopefully I could go to Watkins Glen before the end.
Kenny, you create interesting content. I appreciate it. This one is my very favorite.
I wish we could've got to hear more about the F1 deal but I get it 😀 Great convo. Michael Andretti was my favorite indy car driver growing up. I miss those battles between him, Al Unser Jr and Emerson Fittipaldi.
I know that IndyCar has moved on, but Michael's insight on the push to pass cheating incident is quite revealing. Thanks Michael!
@23:29 His point about bringing in someone who knows how to grow a small sport into something bigger. They did that briefly with Randy Bernard who came from the Professional Bull Riders Association to the Indy Racing League from 2010 to 2012. Not sure who could be a similar contemporary candidate.
"It was one of those programs that was never meant to be successful" And what does Michael mean by that? IF you know the real story of what happened when Michael was hired by McLaren, you already have a good idea what he's referring to. For those who do not know, I'm not related to Michael, I'm not Michael's friend and what happened to him and his family in regards to F1 still personally pisses me off to this day so I will gladly educate people... An American, (who wants to keep living in America while he races) gets hired by a top tier Formula one team who's lost a long time engine partner. The new engine partner has an unreliable product, the whole of F1 wants the American to move to Europe and bend to their demands. He refuses, keeps living in the US during his tenure, the engines keep breaking, he's not provided the same upgraded parts as his team mate, and with no proper testing allotted to him he STILL manages to get a podium inside his first 10 race events of his career, and then is fired and made to look like a failure...
Fast forward 30 years, and that driver tries to enter as an owner, and they attempt to perpetuate that same bogus story to the point that they blatantly disrespect his father who was a World Champion of that very series. All the while, taking American fans merchandise and ticket money with 3 races inside the United States, but not allowing any competitive American a shot on the grid. Notice I said competitive.
Logan Sargeant was used at the Williams team as a scapegoat, brought up before he was ready, put into the worst performing car on the grid, again with little overall experience, and is now on the chopping block and will be replaced in the coming weeks, fulfilling his role as the token American who couldn't hang in Formula One because they are prejudiced against a true American presence in their sport. Go ask them why Gene Haas isn't seen at Formula 1 events... They ran him off with threats of fines and banishment from the grid etc if he kept giving open and honest interviews. Formula One hates American racers. PERIOD.
Bingo!
Michele?
@@BarryNoret read it again...
Word. F1 doesn't even allow their preferred countrymen competitive racing. If you win you are a made man.
Preach. and it was WAY worse then. People forget that Indy was huge before the split, and F1 hated it.
With your questions about Roger and the age he's at and the future of the speedway after him, I remember seeing an article where Tony George personally asked AJ about his opinion of selling the speedway to Roger, AJ (one of the biggest critics of Penske through the years) said there is no better steward to own the speedway. It really says what Roger is to the speedway, but more-so, what the 500 means to Roger that makes him the most fitting steward moving forward.
We are with Michael in his quest to join F1. The idea to get Congress involved was what I hoped would happen. I know John James pretty well and I am proud of him taking leadership in Congress on this issue.
Great interview Hermanator! Would love to see Colton win the 500 this year, hopefully Andretti has a strong package.
Really enjoyed the interview with Michael, a guy who doesn't go public often. I always wonder how he would have done had Frank WIlliams signed him to drive that car in 1993 - all with ample testing time, that is. Of course, I don't think ole Frank wanted to pay anything.
Indycar has the best racing right now. It's a shame people don't appreciate it. Barber was an incredible race and the fan experience there is unmatched. As an Alabama local, I'll take Barber over Talladega any day.
Great Interview
Great interview, and great questions especially because INDYCAR is not your primary focus. Really appreciate the INDYCAR content!
Great episode
In its heyday, IndyCar was a magnet for great drivers around the world, and could still be. F1 is bonkers but dominated by engineering, not driving. There’s room for Indy to capitalize with a driver-centered series. The reason it’s obscure is because some people, who want it to be about them and not their drivers, want it that way.
Great show 😊
Back in the day . . .
Indianopolis 500 was always like the championship game of the NFC
and the Daytona 500 like the championship game of the AFC
and the CocaCola 600 (World 600) which ran on the same weekend as Indy was a taste of joining the two :-0)
I remember when he came back from F1 and ripped Surfers Paradise to shreds!
Sad F1 treated Mike like that.
Racing Royalty.
Here's hoping Michael and the Andretti family get into NASCAR. Andretti Earnhardt has a damn fine ring to it and a new manufacturer coming along right now would fulfill the support they'd each require to break through successfully. Indy racing is in a really tough spot, hard to gain the ground they need without massive investment. But that mannequin gives me hope, that's a budget friendly viral mascot if I ever saw one.. ironically I believe it still has life. Sign stiffy up for appearances at every track, just the wacky type of thing the internet loves to talk about.
I'm glad that MA is looking forward series. I've always been a Penske fan. They should of owned up to the mistake like Scotty did. I live in Indy. So we see the advertising. Have the core 500 fans that follow. I've spoken to Connor Daily about what is the advisement outside of Indiana is?
Hay Kenny
Kenny I think Indy car needs more American born racers. 3/4 of the field are foreigners which I think hurt the American fan base. That’s a question you should ask Michael next time you see him.
Ps always liked Michael 👍
Bill France Jr. definitely put the kabosh on the Indy series by giving Tony George bad advise really think he was scared Indy car would take away from NASCAR...
You know, I'd appreciate some timestamps or chapters
Mario Andretti the most handsome senior citizen alive today.
Michael is a far better team owner than he was a driver, and he was a pretty good driver!
I wonder what a Indy for f1 would be like?
The Andretti name needs to be in Formula one again. I believe fans from all over the world want them in, not just American fans.
Bring it Home Marco
..Indy 500!!!!!!
The most honest I think I’ve ever seen Michael great interview
Can't wait until Mario and Michael buy the series.
Mike won Toronto Grand Prix 7 times!!
The on-track product in Indycar is very good. The Barber race Sun was really good. The Long Beach GP was incredible. There are several legends like Dixon & Powers still battling for wins and the next generation of guys like Palou, Herta, O Ward, and Company are some of the best young drivers to ever come into the sport in a relatively short period.
But the off track management is garbage. They took the most TV money and now all the practices and qualifyings are locked away behind a paywall on Peacock. 3-4 races are on Network and the rest are on USA network or Peacock. They need to forget about the most profitable TV deal and go with the most marketable and visible TV deal before they go out of business!
You're complaining about $5.99/month? Plus you get all the practices and qualifying and can watch it at your leisure.
Even NASCAR is going to streaming with the new contract they signed. There’s too many commercials on network TV now at least 33% of the races are dedicated to commercial time. I’ve had Peacock for years and there’s nothing better. It’s only $5.99 per month and every practice and test with all the other content.
The drivers didn't know only used once by one and not at all by the other...
I miss seeing an Andretti wheeling a sprint car.
Kenny. Etalian.
A huge fan of Indycar, 90s era was amazing! I still love indycar now. But the Push to Pass cheating is something you would see in F1 and NOT INDYCAR.
Winning everything but the 500. Greatest driver that never did. He got hosed in F1. They’re still trying to keep him out now. F1 sucks.
I don't think Penske knew but he's the man in charge and is guilty of negligence. He's too old to be able to do the job of the huge Penske racing teams. North and South as well as own the IMS and be the CEO of the Series. He should have to sell off either IMS, his teams, or step down from his leadership role in IndyCar. If there's anything I found out about the scandal that I know is true is that Roger can't do his jobs correctly anymore. He's bitten off more than he can chew.
Need to go back to screaming, great sounding engines. Not these wimpy v6 things.
Roger is my Boss, can’t say anything bad about him. 😉
Imo I would rather have quality over quantity
So what actually happened with the push to pass, how can they manipulate that.
Penske has cheated before just look at the AMC javelin
I remember my dad's mother lived in Indiana. My mom said she would baby sit the young andrettis.
He knows
C A R T,, auto racing will never be surpassed by Indy car...
It's not eye-talian. It's IT-alian. To pronounce it eye-talian is terribly uneducated and disrespectful, but I think coming from Kenny it is an innocent unknowing disrespect.
Denny beat off your favorite driver!!!!
Michael is cool, but Mario is the original Baddass, winning your Daytona 500 in '67....
WHAT IS PUSH TO PASS?
PUSH-TO-PASS: The pushing button activates a system that delivers increased power through the turbo boost for the pre-determined period during the race.
Why is the turbo boost limited in the first place -
Look a 91 cu in engine with a turbo boost can make 900 to 1400 BHP in race trim - everyone knows this - when the IRL went to turbo and 160 cu in they limited the boost to 8-PSI and the engines were making 700 to 900 BHP at 16000 RPM - these rules are just at a level of stupidity that I can't understand - if you are trying to limit the overall speed of the race car - it is straightforward you want 1000 BHP - this is not hard to do in NA configuration on methanol - 3-BHP per cu in is easy - we do it all the time with push-rod stuff - 1000/3= 333-cu in geez that like a Chevy 327 with DOHC and modern Hi-Tek stuff - GIVE ME A BREAK
