Some company's actually do that like one time a youtuber's video got copyrighted when it was suppose to be protected by fair use and when he went on twitter and said that he was reviewing his legal options the company gave him the video back. I respect how calm & cool you are with the whole situation - I'm confident you will get it resolved in the end . I was robbed $6000 USD from one of these claims myself. The company (Extreme Music) claimed my entire short movie on a song which wasn't even used in the video. I sent about 4 retractions and contacted UA-cam multiple times over the 12 months (nothing worked obviously). In the end, I had to personally go seek them out and threaten to take further action if they didn't do anything about it; and thankfully they did. It’s alright for us bigger channels, but anyone fairly small has no chance against these false claims which sucks big time.

Im seriously disappointed in UA-cam for this mess. Imagine relying on a source like this to maintain the credibility of your work. Even with evidence and everything to back him up, UA-cam still didn't act rationally. What does it take for this kind of occurrence to stop happening? I read the comments and seen people's channels be unfairly striked and taken down. All the content and work erased into nothing. These are horrendous stories and UA-cam really needs to stop breaking the hearts and lives of their community.

Covers can legally be claimed by the copyright holders. It falls under the right to perform. Copyrights cover not only the original recording, but any performances, sampling, unauthorized arrangements, remixes and written transcriptions. Even if your video has just a few seconds of a recording it can be claimed, unless it falls under fair use (i.e. you're reviewing the song). Now, if these claims are _not_ by the copyright holders and truly are by fake channels, then that's really messed up.
I reached out to TheFatRat on facebook and sent him a video of my son saying he was a fan of TheFatRat. Much to my surprise TheFatRat replied and said some nice words to my son who was thrilled by the gesture. Needless to say, TheFatRat is a boss.

In the letter he received, UA-cam says "There are either ads running on your video, with the revenue going to the copyright owner, or the copyright owner is receiving stats about your video's views." This is while the video is still running. So it's possible that there are many cases where UA-cam is in violation of copyright law due to their own actions.

This is still a huge ongoing problem even years later - I recently got a copyright strike and despite having proper licenses for the footage in my video my dispute is going back to the claimant for review - the system makes absolutely no sense and seems intended to mentally stress out legitimate content creators by others who have bad intentions - this seriously needs to change

Google fears it will be used to host illegal content, so they come down hard on the side of claimants. They are also not staffed well enough to investigate every claim. They know this screws over content creators, but they don't want to spend the money to implement a better system.
It's definitely inevitable, but the sad thing is that UA-cam is so powerful that no other video platform can compete with it in terms of volume and amount of creators at the moment. IGTV is possibly the only realistic competitor I can imagine, but I personally don't see that dethroning UA-cam anytime soon. It's sad that UA-cam still gets away with shit like this simply because they know they realistically won't be threatened unless a huge media outrage would spark because of it, and I just don't see that happening. *Rant over*

There are only a few things still keeping UA-cam aflowt and if a complete new site appears that manages to attract old and new youtubers they eventually will lose everything because as soon as the users are gone the companys will follow as well.

This is honestly the first time I’ve heard of this happening, and I think I’ve had something similar happen, I got copyrighted on an absolute BS claim, on a video with no bgm, and I got claimed for a song that wasn’t even in the game I was playing. Just yesterday I had my ENTIRE channel demonetized because youtube now decided that if a video has been uploaded to the platform too many times (basically people stealing our songs/videos and reuploading them on their channel) it counts as duplicate/reused content and all channels can get punished in one way or another. The problem is: knowing youtube the way we do, they are certainly leaving those decisions up to some kind of broken bot following a horrible algorithm and so it backfires and punished even the ORIGINAL creators...

Jim Sterling has his own claim ID as far as I know because it happens to him so often. But he is lucky enough to have the money to get a damn good lawyer that can leave YT trembling in their boots at the drop of a pen. Not all content creators have that. Infact, I am 110% sure there are small channels that have fallen victim to these "people" that are so basic that they cant even come up with 1 original idea for themselves, so they do what they have heard others are doing to scam CCs and steal what they can from them before running and hiding like a puppy when somebody turns on a vacuum. Thats why I dont even bother with creating content on here. Because some child whos daddy didnt love them enough will just throw a fit because I got more likes then they did. All videos on my channel are just simple videos that I dont monetize because I want people to watch them and enjoy
I can't believe this is still going on and I'm just starting out on UA-cam, my video I posted of a cover song - where I did not monetize it, was just for fun, got claimed within minutes of uploading. MINUTES. Now that video is not getting many views, so the money (if any) will be pennies but I'm livid for the actual artist that the money SHOULD be going to. This system is crazy, no vetting of the person doing the claim at all and still allowing the process is so wrong.

Im seriously disappointed in UA-cam for this mess. Imagine relying on a source like this to maintain the credibility of your work. Even with evidence and everything to back him up, UA-cam still didn't act rationally. What does it take for this kind of occurrence to stop happening? I read the comments and seen people's channels be unfairly striked and taken down. All the content and work erased into nothing. You should report the video then
Covers can legally be claimed by the copyright holders. It falls under the right to perform. Copyrights cover not only the original recording, but any performances, sampling, unauthorized arrangements, remixes and written transcriptions. Even if your video has just a few seconds of a recording it can be claimed, unless it falls under fair use (i.e. you're reviewing the song). Now, if these claims are _not_ by the copyright holders and truly are by fake channels, then that's really messed up.
I reached out to TheFatRat on facebook and sent him a video of my son saying he was a fan of TheFatRat. Much to my surprise TheFatRat replied and said some nice words to my son who was thrilled by the gesture. Needless to say, TheFatRat is a boss.

In the letter he received, UA-cam says "There are either ads running on your video, with the revenue going to the copyright owner, or the copyright owner is receiving stats about your video's views." This is while the video is still running. So it's possible that there are many cases where UA-cam is in violation of copyright law due to their own actions.
Correction: Google doesn't give your video to a stranger, they give your MONEY to a stranger.

This is still a huge ongoing problem even years later - I recently got a copyright strike and despite having proper licenses for the footage in my video my dispute is going back to the claimant for review - the system makes absolutely no sense and seems intended to mentally stress out legitimate content creators by others who have bad intentions - this seriously needs to change

Google fears it will be used to host illegal content, so they come down hard on the side of claimants. They are also not staffed well enough to investigate every claim. They know this screws over content creators, but they don't want to spend the money to implement a better system.

It's definitely inevitable, but the sad thing is that UA-cam is so powerful that no other video platform can compete with it in terms of volume and amount of creators at the moment. IGTV is possibly the only realistic competitor I can imagine, but I personally don't see that dethroning UA-cam anytime soon. This is honestly the first time I’ve heard of this happening, and I think I’ve had something similar happen, I got copyrighted on an absolute BS claim, on a video with no bgm, and I got claimed for a song that wasn’t even in the game I was playing. I really hope that you got the rights to your song back, and that the way to recover your rights has since been simplified in a way that actually makes some sense
You are not alone FatRat. Just yesterday I had my ENTIRE channel demonetized because youtube now decided that if a video has been uploaded to the platform too many times (basically people stealing our songs/videos and reuploading them on their channel) it counts as duplicate/reused content and all channels can get punished in one way or another. The problem is: knowing youtube the way we do, they are certainly leaving those decisions up to some kind of broken bot following a horrible algorithm and so it backfires and punished even the ORIGINAL creators...

Im glad you got your video back. CCs like you, SidAlpha, and so many more keep getting this kind of crap all the time. Jim Sterling has his own claim ID as far as I know because it happens to him so often. But he is lucky enough to have the money to get a damn good lawyer that can leave YT trembling in their boots at the drop of a pen. Not all content creators have that. Infact, I am 110% sure there are small channels that have fallen victim to these "people" that are so basic that they cant even come up with 1 original idea for themselves, so they do what they have heard others are doing to scam CCs and steal what they can from them before running and hiding like a puppy when somebody turns on a vacuum. I can't believe this is still going on and I'm just starting out on UA-cam, my video I posted of a cover song - where I did not monetize it, was just for fun, got claimed within minutes of uploading. MINUTES. Now that video is not getting many views, so the money (if any) will be pennies but I'm livid for the actual artist that the money SHOULD be going to. This system is crazy, no vetting of the person doing the claim at all and still allowing the process is so wrong.
