Such an iconic car. I've had 8 Capri's over the years from Mk1 through to the MkIII. Still have my 2.8 injection and will probably never sell it. Goes well, sounds great, has been totally reliable, parts supply is pretty good and they are surprisingly practical and happy to do long trips. The later cars with the 5-speed box and power steering make a for an excellent GT car which gets a lot of attention these days.

Have loved the Capri for over 50 years.
Thanks to a tax-rebate, my working-class dad managed to buy a two-year old Mk1 in sky blue, in 1972 and as a family...we ADORED it!! Dad never left Ford for pretty much the rest of his life, owning several Cortina's and four Capris.
I too, have had the pleasure of owning the best car Ford ever made.
Alas, my last Capri, was written off by a pratt in a volvo in 1998 and the insurance company refused to repair, as back then, they were worthless!
I live in Brunei these days and rarely see any Ford...but I still long to own a Capri.
Back in 1972 - 73 I was a salesman in a Ford dealership. Junior salesmen were provided with a Mk 1 Escort 1300L. If you performed well, you could be upgraded to a Mk 3 Cortina 1600L. I sold a few more cars than most of my colleagues and as a company car I had a brand new Capri 1600XL in Purple Velvet, black vinyl roof and sports road wheels. I loved the car not least because I knew I was the envy of the whole sales department!
Had a 3 ltr ghia back in the early eighty and what a car.First week I couldn't stop driving and realised I spent 100 quid on petrol, yes it was thirsty but what the hell loved every bit of it.😊😊😊😊
What a gorgeous example of a mk1, thanks Chris for a fab video. Your 5th reason for buying one is spot on, so many experiences had and memories made in these cars, along with the Cortina and Escort etc. Even non car people will recognise it and pop over for a chat, I get that all the time with my Escort, it's a very personal connection which is impossible to put a price on.
My first experience in a Capri was a blue metallic GXL with vinyl roof and a V4 engine. Used to go to school in it every morning’ what a car 😊. We had a black N plate JPS model next ‘ then a Venetian red 1.6 pinto GL ‘Reg no NDE 805 R ‘ my first car after passing my driving test. I went on to buy a MK2 3 litre Ghia auto in silver Reg MWL501S ‘. Gutted I never kept any of them 😮’ really were great cars’ and simple to work on .
I remember well the launch of the Capri in 1969. I was working in a Ford dealership. We couldn't get enough Capris to satisfy demand; we shifted quite a few potential buyers onto Cortina GT/1600Es as an alternative. My first Capri was a 1970 2-litre V-4, followed less than three weeks later by a '70 3-litre V-6 manual . The handling of the 3-litres depended very much on the tyres you had on them. When I bought my first V-6 it came with Michelin 185/70-13 ZXs, which were lethal in wet conditions. I very rapidly replaced them with Avon Wide Safety 7.3 x13 Cross-plies which sent you a postcard well in advance of breaking away on wet roads. My mates were all subsequently amazed at the ease with which I could drive my 3-litre Capri sideways😄
Well this brings back some Daytona Yellow memories, which was the colour of my dad's 1970 2000GT V4. A marvellous car with a very special exhaust note... 💛
I had one back in 1984. I had a 1973 V6 4 speed manual. Excellent car. With i still had it.
So lucky to be in GB. So hard to find one in the US. I am an old guy that owned a 1972 that I bought in 1974, when I was 17. My favorite car of all time.

I bought a 1982 metallic green Crapi 2.0 Ghia with brown interior for 150 pounds back in 98 and kept it for all of 2 weeks. I should never have sold it.
I loved my Capri, black 1600LS, modified with a 2.1 Pinto and 5 speed box, and S interior, and 2.8 alloys.

I had mk2 in the the 90's which I transferred interior and running gear from a 2.0 Laser into, loved it. Have a mk1 now, the 1600 has gone to my escort and it will be re-born with a 2.0 pinto.
Capri doesn't get anywhere near the hype of an escort but that's all good, keeps the prices sensible. They're a hoot and far more comfortable than many modern cars.
I remember the Capri very very well and the early Consul 2 door very very well, our family have had so many over the years including a x pack with wide arches as standard and a few 2.0 S’s and 3.0 S’s , one a gold 3.0 S MK3 only had 37 k original miles and my dad was the second owner. Beautiful cars .
I remember when the Capri was launched it caused quite a sensation. I was working at a Ford dealership at the time.
I bet you wish you had held on to a few of those ford's you worked on..anything with a lotus, rs, or gt badge is going for big money nowadays..capri, escorts, cortinas all great cars in my book..

When I was six, my grandmother bought me my first matchbox car. It was a 1970 Mk1 Capri GT in a beautiful deep red metallic. I loved that car so much that by the time I was 10, half the paint was worn off where I handled it the most and I was determined to own one - in that colour of I could find one. I found a 1971 1600GT for sale with 80,000 miles on it and it was red (but more of a bright red) with a vinyl roof. I drove it - making the same connection between the dials being from a MkII Cortina as you did - and the feeling I had wasn't aptly described until I watched James May drive a Countach. He said "They say you should never meet your heroes in case they disappoint you in real life....and I think I can apply this phrase to the Countach". That summed it up nicely for me. I was just utterly bewildered My dream of driving something truly special had been shattered. Well, to put it another way.......if Barbara Streisand was a car, it felt like being at the wheel of her. Although to look at, I was still absolutely smitten (with the Capri of course), but I could not get the nose to go where I wanted without anticipating the type of corner. She understeered and ploughed and the nose roll was terrible. I WAS comparing it to the 1965 Mk1 Cortina GT I owned at the time though, so to be fair on the Capri, it would definitely feel different and a little ungainly in the nose by comparison.
A few years later, a mate's sister had a very late Mk1 (with what became the MKII dash). It was nicer to drive, but again, there was an adjustment one made to the normal driving style to get the car to handle.....but when you made that adjustment, boy could you get it to do some cool things! Throw it into a corner early and come out with a bit of opposite lock.....or leave it late to corner, throw it in hard and feed it a LOT of opposite lock coming out - either way, the car wanted you to give it stick. Then another mate bought a MkII 2-litre GT (we never got the V6 out here in NZ unless it was specially imported). He took me for a run in it and....well, he could not drive for peanuts and the car had no front shocks - no, really it had none as he had taken them out because they made knocking noises and was now saving up to buy a new set..... I didn't get to see what a MkII was really like until not so long ago, when a mate had a (rare) JPS Capri. Black with black interior and gold pinstriping, the John Player Special Capri was one gorgeous car, with all the little bits of titivation over the standard MkII. Man that car could fly and boy did she handle well in the hands of an experienced Capri bloke. I could not wipe the smile off my face for days afterward!
I still love the Capri, but for the same money people are wanting for them when I was looking, I bought two other icons from a different stable - a 1974 Triumph Stag and a 1979 *yes, you read that right) Triumph 2500S. Both are manual with overdrive and both put a huge smile on my face. The Stag makes me smile with the top down and the engine burbling happily and the 2500S gives me the fizz because it is so predictable on winding roads and so well planted. Nowadays, I would still have to sell both to buy a Capri GT - and like you, I'd be looking at a MkII, but largely from the point of view that the full hatch is more practical and dash layout is better. Yes, they softened the lines a bit from the MkI, but they do at least have head rests and a couple more modern creature comforts. I prefer the 1600 crossflow engine to the OHC though, so that would be something I'd have to live with I suppose.....
Nearly 50 years ago I thought "One day......." Maybe it's time to think about it again. Hmmmmm........

@@savage22bolt32 - Nose-heavy, mate. Nose heavy. With the centre of the weight distribution of the wee beast being so far forward, there was lots of wanting to go straight at corners and the arse end behaving more like a Mini than a mid-sized Ford. It wasn't until I understood the quirk and got used to making the subtle change in the approach to a corner, that I began to relax and enjoy driving the beast.

If only I could've owned one for longer. I took ownership of my grey Mk III at 100+ thousand miles; it was an excellent car that drove faultlessly EVERY day for eleven years. We tidied the paint, gained a few horsepower & uprated the suspension. The Capri achieved everything it was designed to and then some.
The grin factor on this car is HUGE and only matched by an American muscle car of the same 60s-70s era, which I'm pleased to say I now own, despite having to part with the Capri (which a young spanner-head bought & converted into a racer - so, happy ending).

The Mark 1& 2 were very popular in Jamaica. They should have have put a Cosy. engine in the Mark 3.

Had 2.8i until 2019, and owned it for 17 years. Did a double take at 19:39 as recognised where you were filming in Oxfordshire less than 1/2 a mile where I used to live up till this year and the old stomping ground of my 2.8. Great video.

I had a 1.3 mk1 with GT wheels. Wasn't particularly fast but loved it.
I owned 2 of thema1.6 and a 2000 cc 4 speed) in Puerto Rico. Then 4 Cortinas (including a 1970 red GT and a '73 station wagon 1972 2000cc Automatic), 1966 Anglia panel delivery. But the Capri's were the most found by far.
I live in USA now and only saw a handful Capri's but looks like they are all extinct from everywhere.

What makes the Capri special has to be the fact that it's not really special at all. The fact you can make them what you want them to be is the appeal, definitely, they managed to be a blank canvas without being boring somehow. I've come close to owning one a few times and never quite made the commitment, always having something else a smidge more interesting cross my path at just the wrong/right moment.

For a video full of so much Capri history and info I am amazed that you completely missed the Mk1 facelift. I had one back in the early 80s. It gave the Mk1 a more aggressive updated look. Also called a Mk1 GT. Larger 1 piece headlights, front indicators in the bumper. Large rear tail lights, black vynil roof with chrome trim. Raised bonnet centre, OHC engine. Redesigned interior. I have driven both early Mk1 and later Mk1 GT (facelift) and the handling and performance was improved .
This video kinda brought a tear to my eye (me think8ng through my childhood in my dads capris) as a child of the 90s i was born into the capri its a part of my life my personality my heartbeat im A soppy sod for the for the capri those pictures just made me look back at how much joy the capri brought me.
I remember my dads couple of capris he had 3ltr gxl (my fave) a green and blue fade which was originally gold and a pearlescent purple with blue accents (his final) he had many others but not really a big part played in my memories
All cars were either restored or modified he was part of the manchester capri club.
Sometimes im embarrassed at how much i lust after the capri how much they honestly make me get butterfly's but i think its because of just how much the played a big roll im my love of cars.

Love 'em! My Dad had 2, a MK 1, 1600 in Pacific Blue , then a MK1.5 1600 GT Pinto engine. Sebring Sunset Red with a Black vinyl top. Things I remember..... Opening rear windows, and the Map light on the passenger A pillar. I finally got a MK3 2.0 GL "T" reg . Two tone Red and Silver. Loved it. Easy to work on. My "W" reg Cortina.... not so much, no room around the engine to work on it easily. Capri every time!

I've had two Capris, a mk2 1 6 that I crashed & had to scrap it & a m3 2.0s. I loved both & would dearly, dearly love to own another, especially a mk2. An old girlfriend had a mk1 face-lift & it was gorgeous ❤

Had a 1600 MK2 in Modena green with black vinyl roof n the 80s, pioneer sound system, recaro seats not fast but comfortable, good looking, easy to work on, and great for entertaining the ladies!, loved it
I owned a Mk3 3.0l and I wish I still had it.
Bought my 3rd Capri a 2.0s mk3 in diamond white 18 months ago in lockdown. Drove it all over during in that time on quite roads.It was like being back in the 1980s again. Most fun i have had in a long time.

A bit prone to rust but I live in Montreal ,Canada . My first Car bought at 15 , paid 100 Canadian .1973 made in England , 2600 cc
Engine . I remember when I would open the door it would fall on my toes . The hood poped open while driving on the highway and I banged my head trying to stick it out the window to see where I was going . My tire also fell off .Car packed with 3 buds in back and 2 girls in front . We saw a tire go flying by and it just kept rolling ( lucky I never killed anyone ) , until it hit a fence 300 meters down the road , it was only when I pressed the brake and the weight and momentum shifted did the car fall / lean on the the front right side . The list of mishaps and near death experience s were unlimited BUT I would not trade those years for all the money in the World ..
I loved that car , I dreamt about the car and my gang loved driving with me . I could drive even if we smoked 10 joints in the car . I drove straight and true . I miss that car .

I used to have a 1972 3 litre GTXLR back in my younger days, still regret selling it. I was looking recently at a Perana V8, but just couldn't justify the expense.
my mate has had lots of them, id love a MK 3, so much room inside them which is good as im 6foot 4 and love a good ford, iv had XR's RS turbos and Cosworths. now i want a capri. just need to save up money which atm is hard.

Great video. I owned a rare Capri Crayford 1600XL MK1 1973. Sunburst red. Reg MYF 620L. I suspect it was scrapped after I sold it in about 1984.
In 1973 I lived in Joburg and owned a Parana, 302 V8, only sold in S A, thats the real Capri to own.

Back in about 1993 I bought a 1967 Datsun long bed pick up from a guy that was sitting on blocks in the field behind his house.
A few days later I came back with wheels and tires and a battery to get it going, I lifted the hood and there was a 2.6 solid lifter cam V-6 in it with an Offenhauser split plane aluminum intake manifold, Mallory dual point distributor in it, nice tube headers that joined into a single 2" exhaust. It had a c-4 auto transmission and the stock Datsun 3rd member in it. It had a crumpled push rod on 1 cylinder when I first got it running. Had to get a carburetor too, ended up with a Holley 600 square bore I think, anyways talk about a sleeper truck. It wouldn't beat an Iroc Z-28 from light to light but an RS 5.0 had no chance. Once that little v-6 started to wind up in first it just tached out quick took second and that's when it would start pulling away from the 5.0 Camaro. Ahh, nemories!

I remember the launch in 1968 (or 1969?) I was 8 and pestered my Dad to buy one as they looked so sporty. He even had a test drive in one but............did'nt buy it and bought a Simca 1501 Special instead. Devastated as my friends would have been so impressed :-)

Back in 70s, ibuilt custom mk3 zodiac for chelseacruise nights.Guy offered me straight swop for cologne 2.6 made for american market MCD 333P but left hooker.Deal done, removed emmision bits and carb. Fitted twin choke webber, removed ballast coil, fitted redtop sports one.Upset my mate who had 3ltr tned by vengatune at big expense, 2.6 left him behind every time. Wish kept it, jerremy walton who wrote books , CAPRi! Checked chassis no and told me only 3 in uk, one of which written off. Sorely missed!!

I remember the launch of the MK1, and lusted after one. A cousins new Fern Green MK1 1600XL with optional rostyle wheels was the first car I drove. Though I never owned a Capri, I think my favorite, and possibly purest, has to be the MK1 RS2600. Quarter front bumpers, quad headlights, power bulge, deletion of unnecessary fake side vents Kugelfischer fuel injection, and Scheel front seats. The Capri, the car i always promised myself, then forgot, and bought a Volkswagen.
Personally the v8 perana version is my faviorite (most don't even know about the perana capri )but in terms of looks the rs3100 and the rs2600 are hard to beat.
There is a mk1 in Norwich with the reg DOR 1S still see it about.
😢😢😢 my first ever car when i was16. I am in Australia 🇦🇺👍. Love that bluddy car and if had hiensight i would have kept it. Now 54 yrs old brings back fond memories of my youth. Those were the days no mobiles or computers 😂 it was only a 1600 four cylinder but went hard for a small motor. Ford motors take a bit of stick! 😂 dream would be the v6. I drive now a ford falcon bf 2005 barra xr6 ute and goes like a shower of shit and even hasn't got a turbo on it. Would be scary! 😂😂😂 has extractors and sounds nice just right not to loud or soft. Love my utes also use to have Toyota hilux ute to. Miss that girl to. Ive been blessed with good vehicles. I have owned 5 Capris. 1x 3000E, 2xUren Comanche, 1x1600xl and a MkIII 2.0 Ghia company car. Loved them all. Interesting handling. Too light at the rear, but fun was had. Mine is the yellow Comanche at the end lists. @Mustdriveslower I still have an Uren Savage Cortina. Going to be back on the road next spring. Watching this Video reminds me just how great Capris were. Agree they were the UK Mustang.

My cousin had the MK2 2L GL in Gold and I had a MK5 2L Ghia Cortina in Diamond White.
Looking at the prices now If only we had a luxury lock up and a crystal ball we like Del Boy would been millionaires.
I grew up on a Housing Scheme on the West Coast of Scotland and although cars were a rarity up there in the 70’s one of the lads had a Yellow 3 Ltr S which he routinely had sideways on the scheme for our amusement.
It's pretty much the same as the Austin Maxi, initially very cool, available in different engine sizes, great to look at, suffered a lot from rot - although the Capri was worse, went out of fashion but has made a comeback over the last twenty years or so. The performance figures are similar and they are both ageless classics, both at home on track days at Brands Hatch or outside a chicken-in-a-basket pub in the Welsh Mountains.
On those heady, warm summer afternoons there's nothing better than pulling in to a motorway service station in your Capri or Maxi, breaking out your travel rug and thermos flask and sitting on the grass apron around the car park watching the cars come and go whilst sipping on a nice cup of tea, all the while basking in the warmth of admiring glances other patrons are giving your Capri or Maxi and knowing they wished they had one.

Great cars yes, fond memories yes, but the values are beyond sensible. I drove a colleague’s 1.6 Laser and looked down that great long bonnet while revelling in the 73PS.. not really that exhilarating 😂
My brother in law had two mk2s. He was really good at stripping them to bits then getting his dad to put them all back together!

I was a XR2 fella until I drove my mates 3.0S.
Few months later I part exed the XR2 for a beautiful Peppermint green 2.0S (A-Reg 1983) in 1987.
Kept it for a year and foolishly sold it upon buying my first house.
Then in 1990 I picked up (that I now know to be true) the last registered original 4 speed 2.8i on a A-plate, Registered Aug 1983.
Graphite over silver with only 30k on it, I kept this for 5 years before selling for a family hatchback!!!!
£1500.....
It's still on the road last time I checked....God knows what it must be worth now.

In 1984 a friend of mine who had a facelift MK 1 Capri (had the twin stack rear lights) contacted me to say that his parents had told him he needs to get rid of the car from their drive as it had broken down and he couldn’t get it running. I could have the car for free if I could remove it. Probably spent an hour working on it and got it running and drove it home lol. Was white with a black vinyl roof 1600 GT.

I had a Mk1 2 litre V4, crimson with vinyl roof. Loved it but almost killed myself a few times!
The Holy Grail of capri's in my opinion is the Capri Mk1 Perana V8 version only 400 were built back in the 70s and if I had to guess I would say that less than 250 still exist today. The rs3100 is rarer in numbers but you just can't beat the greatness of a v8 in a light car. So 1st would be the perana second would be the rs3100 and then the rs2600. Mk1 are my favorite followed by the mk3 then mk2.
I have had -71 1600 Capri for 8 years as a project, wish i had a garage nowadays to finish it 😢

I have a beautiful1977 Mercury Capri built in Cologne Germany has the Ford V6 ,4 speed, was stored since 2009. Colors are the little more rare black and gold edition , original owner 66 k original miles. Wondering what this would sell for. Starts, drives well shifts nice , engine pulls hard ,minimal smoke.

Had a mk1 and a mk2 my mk1 GT was the best just the shape alone hands down better looking just my opinion
Not for me thanks, had a 3000E back in the day was on a H plate loved it, also had a 3ltr yellow on with twin headlights later hated the bloody thing especially after I got a good thrashing by a guy driving a dolomite sprint 😢 have had loads of Ford's but moved onto my first VW GTI never looked back. Nicely put together video tho well done thoroughly enjoyed it.
We only had the MK1 here in South Africa. Owned a 3.0L V6 and a Perana V8, the only production V8 Capri to exist.

I had a few Capris in the late 70s and early 80s. Loved them but I couldn’t justify the price for the three litre now.
Yes, the price for a 3liter is really high, but wait unill you see the price of the v8 version..

Had mine when I lived in Santa Barbara, California! V6 by Mercury in a beautiful gun metal gray it was loaded. This girl was in heaven! Too many years ago!

Never really did anything for me tbh - as a kid I would see Mk3's quite commonly, and whilst some looked quite smart they never really inspired me. Nowadays, I can't help but look at them and think how underpowered they were - with a great big bonnet like that you expect an engine to match the looks... a thunderous great V8, not a dinky little 1.6... But hey, live and let live. For me personally, if I were going for an entry level classic I'd go for an original Mini - a pop/culture icon, at home everywhere and loved by everybody.
Ever heard of the 3 litre or 2.8 injection versions?
They did have a v8, only 400 of them were built. The perana capri mk1.
