The height of the temperature can tell a lot about how bad the infection is, but the reason your body heats up so much when sick is to create an environment that the viruses/bacteria can't live/function in well, because if I remember correctly, most viruses and bacteria that make us sick don't do well in high temperatures, so to lower it is a bad idea. Fevers evolved as a defense mechanism to fight off infections, and while it's a very common practice, lowering it hasn't ever really improved survival in laboratory animals or in patients, and blocking fevers in ineffective at best, and harmful at worst.
