When he said “No, that’s if you’re from Denmark”, it was sealed and confirmed that he is indeed from Sweden. Non-Scandinavians just don’t know that stuff.
There are three Nordic nations where surnames, since long, often end with -sen, just like there are two ones where surnames often end with -son. Except for Sweden and Denmark, which are these nations?

@@HerrBrutal-bl2fkOf course, lol. I absolutely know that -sen is also the norm in Norway and common in other Nordic nations. My point was that only an actual Scandinavian would reply with “no, that’s if you’re from Denmark” to a question like that on an America late night show. Chill out 👍

-son: Sweden and Iceland
-sen: Denmark, Norway and the Faroe Islands
God I remember this; I just about DIED when they actually found a swede; basically accidentally. It's funny to see how different people felt about cameras back then.

I knew he was a proper Swede when he said that "-en" was "if you're from Denmark". Not many Americans know that distinction. Though many Norwegian names end in -en as well.

Hardly surprising that Americans cannot get it right when it comes to anything outside the U.S. The people living in Iceland are called "Icelanders" and nothing else. In their native language they are "Íslendingar".

They went for people with the stereotypically swedish look, blond hair and blue eyes, but it was a dark haired dark eyed man who came through. God do I miss this era of Letterman.

As a swede with brown hair - I was so annoyed that he only went looking for super blond people xD so happy the guy at the end had brown hair haha. We are not all blond in sweden ^^
He said in Swedish: "Want do you want me to say?" And when he said the Swedish city NORRKÖPING he sounded very Swedish to me.
A better way to look for Swedes is to have a big sign in swedish.

Not that brown-haired swedes aren't just as common as blonde ones, but that guy's appearance was exceedingly rare for a swedish person. Sincerely from a swedish person. Norrköping was an industrial center though back in the day so perhaps a few generations back he has some like... maybe french, belgian, polish or austrian ancestors. Who knows!? :D

Main problem is only asking blondes.
Among us multi-generation Swedes around 50% have brown hair, and then there are quite a few Swedes that aren't as pale as a paper, since they or their parents etc came here from other countries.

This was probably pretty hard to pull off back then. The camera was probably wired up all the way to the studio, unless there was a broadcast satellite truck it was hooked up to in order for Dave to see what's going on. Then there's the issue of a having a good sized speaker so the people on the street could hear Dave like he was right there. Who knows how they did that. Attached to the camera? A grip holding it? And maybe there was an audio guy with a boom mic to get the dialogue.
9:10 You can see the cable. But there was definitely no boom mic or we would have seen it sometime with the rapid panning/zooming all over like that
The camera, mini boom and speaker were rented from ABC Sports, whose logo was on the equipment. I cannot remember how the signal was sent back, so the cable would be the tell. After I walked away, I was chased down by someone who asked me to sign a release.

It could just be that a guest cancelled their apperance and they needed to fill the time with some silliness. Dave is witty and can come up with jokes on the fly so the venture becomes funny.

A big snus under the upper lip and corrected Letterman regarding the surname spelling, and he said "What do you want me to say?" with östgöta- dialect, which is what you'd expect if you're from Norrköping. He is swede.
He in the end actually said Norrköping correctly the end sentence also was correct swedish

If you pause the video at exactly 7:44 you can see the original #8, "HIS HOLIER-THAN-THOU ATTITUDE". I was expecting something far more offensive. If The Donz scans these comments, I'd love to know the backstory. I don't recall a Top 10 being changed after the fact like this.
