Zinny wasnt all hard yards and heavy lifting in the forwards, he actually understood the game and knew what passes were on etc etc. He was one of the first all rounder 8s that I can remember.
Zinny is a legend and grew up in awe of him in Ireland. One thing I’d like to add is that I love sledging and adds spice to the game, the one difference between O’Mahony v Cane and Sexton v Ioane is that O’Mahony made the comment on the park during the game compared to Ioane who took it off the park when final whistle was blown. We all love rugby and respect the game but once the final whistle is blown, we shake hands, have a beer and move on regardless of what side of the score you land on. That is the one thing which disappoints me with such a talented player like Ioane
So true. Funny thing is, O'Mahony just said what 2/3s of NZ fans were saying at the time. Now they're fuming over it. As you said, O'Mahony did it on the playing field. They'll be accusing O'Mahony of multiple counts of assault next for all the tackles he made against them that day.
Its all well and good, we can point at Irelands past failures and laugh, but.......Ireland have only been really competitive since the Grand Slam in 2009, that basically lit a fire under the team and support started rising from there, prior to that nobody really gave a shit. That, and Ireland moving on from its historical internal conflict with england (something no other rugby nation has had to deal with) as well as the country turning from an economic back-water to an extremely wealthy nation in recent years have allowed it to pour money into the development of its sports institutions. This current crop of Ireland players and their new-found confidence are a by-product of the country's changing fortunes. Ireland is quickly finding its feet now that britain is off its back. So I expect them to stay extremely competitive and only get stronger. Whilst Irelands population is roughly on par with NZs, rugby is the 4th or 5th sport, and no where near to being number 1, but that is changing. With only 160 current Pro Irish rugby players they arnt doing too badly. If as i suspect rugby continues to surge in popularity then its only when and not if they win a WC. I expect sooner rather than later.
