Another Pawn Shop Find: Jennings J-22 Pistol - Did I Waste $79

  • The Jennings J-22 pistol was produced from 1978 until approximately 1992 and sold for about $100. I found a nice one at a local pawn shop and paid $79 for it. Watch as my son and I put three different types of ammo through this pistol and find out if I wasted my money.....again!

When I started my law enforcement career I was desperate for a back up gun. At that time the only gun I could afford was a Jennings R22. It was my back up for about a year. It always went bang when I pulled the trigger and was very accurate. After 34 years I still have it. And it still works. Love the pawn shop finds videos, keep them coming!

I had 2 of these, both were older, I actually purchased the 2 from a local gun shop, they were about $25 a piece, both had feed issues, the way the feed ramp and barrel are mounted together there was a rough lip between them, I ground and polished the feed ramp connection and made them nice and smooth, fed like a dream on both afterwards, shot very well and dependable. I’ve since parted with them both, wish I would have kept one for my collection..

This. Old or never broken in the feed ramps are unreliable trash you have to manually check. There's probably a reason Lorcin got sued out of existence.

I picked up a Raven Arms 25acp for $84. Then, I turned around and bought all new springs & changed them all. Bought a backup trigger spring, recoil spring, firing pin spring, another spring, 3 firing pins, a different color slide, different grips, screws, safety switch, and two new magazines.
All these parts cost as much as the gun. But, I wanted to be able to keep this thing operational forever. Who knows, in 10-15 years these parts may not even exist anymore.
      You are totally correct.

  • @alexdarmstaedter454
    @alexdarmstaedter454 8 місяців тому +1

OK, I bought one at a pawn shop. Nice shape, good price. I liked it. I could never get it to shoot two bullets in a row. Kept jamming, no matter what kind of ammo I used. I found that it was missing the extractor, so I took it back to the pawn shop. They agreed to get it fixed. After about 2 months at the gunsmith's. I called and they said they were looking for parts. Well, I found the parts in about 20 minutes on the internet, and bought them. I gave them to the gunsmith and he completed the repair. Got it back, and it surprisingly would NOT cycle the ammo past the second shot. The shop gave me credit for what I paid for it, and I bought a Glock 42. Never fails.

I’ve known 2 people who bought these. The first was a friend in early 90’s. At three yards it would group about 18 inches. Another friend bought it for his wife in 2019 as a purse gun. The factory mags wouldn’t work in the gun. The springs would stick in the bottom of the mags and the rounds would float freely in the mag tubes. I tell anyone that asks for my advice that the cheapest gun that they should buy is a Ruger or a Canik. I’ve been testing a Taurus G3C for a year and it’s been 100% for me so I can recommend it to friends. My next purchase is a PSA dagger. If it’s reliable after a 1000 rounds, it would be my first recommendation because mags and parts are so cheap.

Great video. Looks fun to shoot. Polish that feed ramp and top of the hood where the shell hits before entering the barrel, might possibly get another gun running right.

I use "Crocus Cloth" which is an astoundingly fine emery paper. Just tear a small strip and cover the rubber head of a pencil of various sizes and push in and out like the cartridge moves. It POLISHES the metal and does not grind much off at all. It really works in thirty seconds or so of work!.............................elsullo

Using a 3D printer I was able to manufacture a frame for one of these, and then acquire a parts kit for less than 50 bucks. After a bit of hand-fitting with the parts, I can get her to run through most magazines without a jam. I love this little thing

I bought a J-22 jennings back in 91 or 92 new from a local gun shop, I believe it cost me then about $90 out the door, My son has it now with the original box, receipt and paperwork, its still reliable to this day, which is odd for the bad reputation they earned over the years,

Pawn shops are run by smart and knowledgeable people, and they rarely loan money on bad guns that they might be stuck with. They tend to have surprisingly good stock and may have room to lower prices if you are polite, and do not automatically assume that they are cheaters. Really good deals are available: almost everyone who pawns a gun really does intend to get it back because they LIKE IT, but have bad luck.........................elsullo

I can’t say I have a ton of pawn shop experience but I have bought a few. Mostly it depends on what they paid for it to determine how much they can wheel and deal. Most of the ones I have dealt with are not gunsmiths so at best they might wipe them off before they go in the case and at worst they just go in the case warts and all so be aware.

Sorry did some shooting today. Years ago I bought a raven arms 25 off a guy for like $20. Had a broken firing pin. I just fixed it recently with a new stainless firing pin. The gun is laughably simple but what can I say it functions well. I cleaned her up and put back in dad’s safe with a box of shells. I am happy to own it.

I have one of those Jennings j22 !!! I bought it back in 1989 for the first wife to plink with she hated it lol. I've had a hard time shooting the thing because my big hands ,so I gave it to my Dad witch he also had big hands and had a hard time shooting it. After his passing i got his gun collection and low an behold it was in with them so it came back. He lost one of the mags that came with it so I had to buy one from eBay to replace it. My 10 year old grandson loves shooting it.

I had a Jimenez Arms .22 I recently parted with. Jimenez is the successor to Jennings when the latter got screwed by an insane court ruling.
Perfect size for a pocket pistol, or snake gun to carry in the yard. Feed and ejection issues as others have described, very sensitive to the ammo shot through it.
Kind of already regret parting with it, I had four magazines with it, but decided the malfunction rate was too high.
If somebody could retail a 22 or 25 or 32 that size under about $229 at most, preferably about $149, and solved the feed issues, I think they would sell a lot.

Good to have a longer video back! The “shorts” are okish, but these are always fun to watch, even a bit educational.
I have an affinity for these .22 Saturday night specials, too. The ones made in Southern California tend to be less dependable, but I still like them. I think the Phoenix Arms .22 (and .25ACP) may be the last of that breed still made here. They are actually pretty decent handguns.
Happy New Year 🎉 to you, your very talented son, and your entire family! I look forward to more adventures.

My first pistol was Jennings .22. I bought it in 1987, I do believe, I turned 20 that year and my Dad had to sign for it (nobody cared about "straw purchases" back then). I was still living with my parents then, going to college and recovering from a car wreck with TBI. The TBI might explain why I bought the darn thing, LOL, but it did shoot very well. It was reliable with good, hot ammo, too. I had one weird AD. I was at my sister's house and outside. Some feral dogs came up and I got the pistol, racked it and BANG! My finger was off the trigger yet my ears were ringing, and there was a divot in the concrete near my feet. I found the casing (Stinger) and the entire rim was crushed. Apparently, that round had a thick rim and the slide had enough force to crush the rim sufficiently for "Bang!" Never had that problem before or since with any ammo or gun. It definitely was an ammo problem too.
Mine had the older sliding safety that was very positive but you weren't going to release it in a hurry. BUT I was married in short order and living on my own and it made a handy little pistol to have. Soon was replaced by S&W model 19 then a Beretta 84, though.
    Great memories, thank you.

I had a Sterling 22 auto around 40 years ago. I liked the look of it but it would fire twice with one trigger pull. I traded it in on a Ruger Mk2 that I still use today. Small pocket handguns are nice to have so I have a North American arms mini revolver for that. It's nice to see a father and son doing things together. Great video.

I had an old original Jennings, made by Jennings, and as long as I didn't use Golden Bullets, it would feed and fire everything. Golden Bullets I'd have at least 2 jams per magazine. For the longest time I kept mine in my fishing tacklebox with a pill bottle with about 120 rounds of CCI Mini-Mags.

I had a Jennings back in the early 00s. I found it in the pocket of a seat cover in a jeep wagoner that i was pulling parts from in a scrap yard. I probably fired around 300 rounds through it. Dont remember it jamming or having any problems. It hit several inches to the right but once ya got used to it it was fine. Traded it off for a bowie knife. Certainly not a terrible little pistol.
