Agreed! Although it is very close and I put IV right behind it! So many memories from both games. To this day I occasionally mimic Garr's critical strike as well as Scias's "shining blade" soundbytes. But something about Ryu, Rei, and Teepo, Balio and Sunder, the Guardians and Brood, and travelling across an impossible sea and endless desert to question and face down a GOD, is just too good.

BoF5 was challenging and unique and it's quite good for people who likes to play that kind of game. Anyway, from the perspective of the game concepts, game theme, and game progression, it's not like BoF that we knows. So it's should be named as Dragon Qurter without Breath of Fire in it. Just thinking if it doesn't has BoF in it, how much it would sell to Capcom? It's kinda a good game but it's not BoF Game anymore.
I too have the same opinion as I grew up with Breath of Fire IV and I find that it's the best of the series just marginally ahead of Breath of Fire III. It really comes down to preferences as they both have merits for being the best. Great review!
One of the biggest questions of mankind - which game is better out of BoF 3 or BoF 4. For me, it’s very hard to pick one, but I’ll go with 4 which I think is marginally better. I agree that the visuals in this game are stunning. I wish I could go back in time and play these two gems for the first time all over again.
Hot take. Dragon Quarter is extremely underrated. It's a great game, and it's a shame the franchise is dead. I would like to see more fans give 5 a fair shot.
My very first jrpg game. 20 years have passed and I still havent forgotten the fun I had playing this game. I hope someday there will be a remake of this awesome game. Thanks for the video mate. That brings memories back :)
This was my first ever JRPG. It's still one of the best games i've ever played. I also remember when I first saw the battle system, and thought it was absolute utter garbage and switched the game off, never intending to play it ever again. It wasn't until about a year later that I had already beat every game I had and was just soooo bored, almost to the point of tears that I decided to just play this game. It didn't take long for me to get completely and absolutely hooked where I couldn't stop playing until I beat it. It was a truly amazing experience, and I almost missed what a game it was due to being very closed minded about the battle system at first. I don't think I would have discovered how great jrpg's were if it weren't for me getting extremely bored that day either.

Nice review man! I think breath of fire 4 has the best 2d animation and designs in an rpg but it was such a pity the bosses had 3d models, I played it way back when it came out after falling in love with BOF 3, It was very good but 3 definitely takes the crown for me, finished 3 multiple times.

But I always felt it's missing something crucial, that would put it along with the greatest examples of JRPG like Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Final Fantasy VI-VII. Maybe a bit more character development or more weight to the story... Hard to say.

Loved the review. As a note, I really wish people would stop comparing 3 to 4. The first trilogy came to an end appropriately, 4 needed to be fresh and different while still staying true to BOF. Which it did. I think that’s a great accomplishment. The graphics are also timeless. Here I am in 2022 still playing it and admiring the art.
I love this game too. If Capcom makes a remake. A few things speed up the cut scenes. A lush interactive world map not just a desert paper looking map.

Looking forward to your BoF V review. It's the only installment I never finished, but I wish I had. I lost all steam when, during the 2nd half of the game, one of its harsh mechanics took away much of what I had earned.
This and Legend of Dragoon... Can't stress enough how good story and pretty advanced customisation of the character play a role, bigger than graphics. For example BOF4 had masters, spells you could learn and then adjusting each character speeds, you could get different combos, which was awesome, plus great mini games and the way you could evolve your dragon forms, not mentioning what single fairy village could do for both your equipment and abilities... All that contained on couple CD's, For LOD you had combos that you just had to execute yourself and also dragon forms that you could level up so to say. Both had great stories and this is why they're so close to my heart. Graphic wasn't only thing that mattered back then, feels like it's quite opposite now, most of new titles has crappy storyline, but awesome graphics.
Imo, BoF4 had the best battle system, but 3 had the best dragon system. If the next BoF took the best from both of these, and built upon them, it would have everything i want in a BoF battle system. As far as story, i love the overall _character development_ of BoF 4 more, but i like the overall _story_ of BoF 3 more. Both are great games though, and both deserve to get remasters with updated systems and graphics.
I have only played this game once and never revisited it. So my memories of it are very hazy. You’ve made me want to replay it though. I also know that there are two things that were censored/not included in the English version of this game, compared to the Japanese version. Will be interesting to see if you catch them for your “Know the facts”. :)
As someone who grew up with BoF3, its hard for me to say this is better... I really don't think I can. However, I am encouraged that it seems to be nearly on par with it, so that is something I'm looking forward to seeing for myself.
This was a personal favorite of mine it has a great way of making the villian seem not so evil iv was so unique but it was a bit to easy all breath of fire games are great.
Order for me from best to worst: 3, 4, dq, 2, 1. All great. I loved dq and was one of the few that appreciated it as much as the other games. but i still see 3 having the gene system being such an incredible experience for me, and 4 had an awesome combo system.
It really is a gorgeous game, with one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. REALLY could have used a world map, and the camera situation got frustrating at times. The pros heavily outweigh the cons for me though, really really love this game.
For me it can be summed up thusly: Breath of Fire 4 has better story, improved combat, and more enjoyable characters (I particularly like the increased role of Deis) but Breath of Fire 3 has the better faerie village in my opinion, superior dragon transformations, and better overall world feel, in that it is a little more laid back and goofy while still providing an engaging story and world in it's own right. (plus, i will forever love the battle theme from 3 above all other rpg battle themes for random encounters). I'm not sure i could pick a favorite personally, as i love both for differing reasons, much like the child analogy you mentioned, but one thing i absolutely love with 4 that 3 does not have is the opening cinematic and song track. I could listen to that for days on end.
Breath of Fire 3 will always be my favorite but I cannot deny how good Breath of Fire 4 was. However, I feel the need to point out something. In your BoF3 review you listed the forced minigames as a negative. While, yes, they are, at least they're scattered about the game in small batches. Breath of Fire 4, however, has at least one forced minigame per area. Be it digging for sandflier parts, chasing the boar-monster in the trap-laden forest, loading Marlock's sandflier, hide-and-seek with the orphans, and so on, there is at least one minigame per area that you have to complete in order to progress the story. Yet you didn't list that as a con in this review, which I find odd as BoF4's minigames are far more annoying than BoF3's. Just thought I'd point that out since you listed it as a con in the previous review yet not here despite them being far more frequent and just as necessary to move the plot along.
I still have to say that I like 4 more than 3... 3 was the better "game", but the story and feel of 4 were far superior and it's the easier game for me to want to replay... replaying 3, especially the child arc, really feels tedious... but replaying 4 feels like revisiting a favorite book...
Sounds like you just like the updated graphics and adult ryu alot which makes sense. Bof 4 the story and characters were so dull I really enjoy bof 3 restart due to story and characters. I feel like nostalgia though is the real culprit here for all of us 😂😂
@@jakea3950 actually, I like 3's graphics better... I just feel like the story arc in 3 sets ups the adult arc well, but the meat of the game is the adult arc... But playing it again, you have to go through the childhood are... 4 just feels complete... No recipes prequel, just a good game... Easy to replay and a great story... If not for the childhood arc, I'd pick 3
@@pmtazekiel Yeah the childhood arc does go for ages, usually I'd dislike that but realise I enjoyed that part of the game 😂😂. For replay though you are right that 4 is much more smooth transition in story and gameplay. 3 has the trap that if you want to play Ryu adult and have Rei full time... You got some.time.to.wait lol
breath of fire 3 is like a beautiful dreamy fantasy to me, the best ever i really wish for a remake, a real remake that keeps the fundamentals that makes the game what it's. dammit it makes me cry whenever i remember it :(
Ehh BoF IV is okay, little overrated I feel with its fairy lackluster cast of heroes but Its still a super solid JRPG none the less. BoF V on the other hand is criminally underrated by the fanbase mostly less than valid reasons.
Just beat this game. BoF4 was both a step up and a step down from BoF3 which I prefer. The first thing that stood out to me was the atmosphere. It seems BoF4 has a strong East-Asian influence in its music, and architecture. It gives a very distinctive feel to the game. The Master system was an improvement in that you can learn their skills without being an apprentice to anyone, though you do have to fulfill certain requirements. My only major complaint is that the majority of the masters are not available until the latter half of the game instead of them being unlocked slowly throughout the story. I liked the gameplay where you can swap characters during battle and the magic combo system is a great feature. However, I strongly disliked the fact that each character can only hold three pieces of equipment (weapon, armor, helmet/accessory). This is a huge let-down from the previous titles. I was also unimpressed by the overworld design and the camera system like you said. BoF3 had the right approach as you can traverse an entire world map despite the overall world being somewhat linear. Despite being more expansive, BoF4 takes away the fun of seeing a "bigger picture" in its overworld design. Additionally, there were countless times when I tried to navigate tight corners and climb up/down ladders only to get stuck a few times. However, if I played the game more often, this shouldn't be a huge issue. It seemed like Capcom wanted to cater this game to both new and experienced gamers. Novice RPG players would appreciate the simpler customization, overworld design and gameplay while more experienced players would have a hard time finding some of the best weapons and equipment. Still, BoF4 is a great game, but is somewhat inferior to BoF3.
It's not even a contest for me. I think 3 is not a good game, but 4 is just so good on so many levels. I put 2 in 2nd place, and not even by much, behind 4. I haven't done 1, but 3 is at the bottom for now.
The dragon in the beginning doesnt transform into Ryu. I think its his mom. The dragon returns to being invisible and flies away and leaves Ryu there in its place
I love bof 1 , because was my first rpg ........... i love bof series , i never played bof4 , tomorrow i will start this game :) ..... played a lot bof 1 and 2...... the third one is really good too! now its time to bof4 :D
4 was really good, I remember the camera really annoying me and a random hard difficulty spike at some point. Also, the gene system should have been kept from the previous entry. All that aside, I still enjoyed 4 although 3 was my favorite. Rei FTW.
III over IV but only by a tiny bit. The only thing that i really dont like is the last part and dungeon in BoF IV. For the rest, its brilliant in any ways. Especially the story was a huge step up with quite a lot of twists and turns and i even shed some tears :'-(. All in all, great review and i hope you dont hate too much on BoF V since its my mothers personal favourite in the series :)
As a whole, I love the series. However, I absolutely didn't like 4 or 5. I never understood how people preferred this over 3. The one single thing about 4 that I can say I did actually like was the combo system.

Yup. Already started researching and found them :)
As someone who grew up with BoF3, its hard for me to say this is better... I really don't think I can. However, I am encouraged that it seems to be nearly on par with it, so that is something I'm looking forward to seeing for myself.
Elina as a test subject, running through her organs like a maze.
BoF 3 and 4 are my all time favourites. I love the Master and Skill Syystem in these 2.
Playing this now on my vita. Just got to Cambria.
Loved both BoF 3 and 4, but I think 4's story was better and more engaging, so I vote 4 on that reason.
BoF 3 was my sudden awakening. BoF 4 is also nostalgic but it was BoF 3 that blew me away.
because the story and the figthing style and the adventure so amaze me
This was a personal favorite of mine it has a great way of making the villian seem not so evil iv was so unique but it was a bit to easy all breath of fire games are great.
I've got that one! 👍 I haven't beaten it, yet, though.
Very nice game and the story in this game awsome.. got multiple ending.. love that unique skill system hehe
Order for me from best to worst: 3, 4, dq, 2, 1. All great. I loved dq and was one of the few that appreciated it as much as the other games. but i still see 3 having the gene system being such an incredible experience for me, and 4 had an awesome combo system.
Breath of Fire |V is above all the rest of BoF games.
I don't know if Breath of Fire will ever get a new sequel...
Capcom says there is no audience
For traditional rpg games.... yet look at how many pokemon games from
Red and blue to sword and shield .🤔
@@Lupo32 jRPGs are having a revival for sure. Persona 5, Dragon Quest XI, Ni No Kuni etc.
It really is a gorgeous game, with one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard. REALLY could have used a world map, and the camera situation got frustrating at times.
The pros heavily outweigh the cons for me though, really really love this game.
BoF IV has one of the most badass antagonist (Fou Lu) in the JRPG history.
Ya 4 kicks ass! Definitely my favorite BoF
My first jrpg
Is u are confused between which is better old version of game or new version of game that means old one is far better new one
3 will always be my favorite. Had so many hours into that game.
BoF 3 is the best for me.. I ended the game 3 times :D
I hope this game will have a remake
Miss this game man
breath of fire 3 is like a beautiful dreamy fantasy to me, the best ever
i really wish for a remake, a real remake that keeps the fundamentals that makes the game what it's.
dammit it makes me cry whenever i remember it :(
Ehh BoF IV is okay, little overrated I feel with its fairy lackluster cast of heroes but Its still a super solid JRPG none the less. BoF V on the other hand is criminally underrated by the fanbase mostly less than valid reasons.
4 is without any doubt my favourite Breath of Fire title! ^^
My ranking is probably 4-2-3-1 ....5.
Hoping for a remake
Capcom should make Breath of Fire 1-4 remakes
I played the game in my childhood and now on mobile emulator :D
It's not even a contest for me. I think 3 is not a good game, but 4 is just so good on so many levels. I put 2 in 2nd place, and not even by much, behind 4. I haven't done 1, but 3 is at the bottom for now.
BOF 4 is my beloved game from ps1. Such a great story. This game needs a remake.
playing it again miyoo mini
legit wanted to replay bof3+4 and a few other rpgs
best game ever.
The dragon in the beginning doesnt transform into Ryu. I think its his mom. The dragon returns to being invisible and flies away and leaves Ryu there in its place
Fou-Lu is one the most underrated JRPG villain...
Gotta say this entry always seemed pretty weak to me in that it is a bit disjointed and I feel like the story was incomplete.
I love bof 1 , because was my first rpg ........... i love bof series , i never played bof4 , tomorrow i will start this game :) ..... played a lot bof 1 and 2...... the third one is really good too! now its time to bof4 :D
One thing missing from bof iv is few side missions
BoF3 is still the best for me. Really wish I'll see another BoF game in the coming years. Dragon quarter pretty much murdered the entire series.
Have you heard about bof 6 ?
@@Outdoors_Guru . You are evil
That last dungeon was massive. Looking forward to starting up 5!
I hope square wakes up an puts out more jrpg's that are more like the ones of old...at least we got dragon quest 11.
Square? Isn't this game comes by Capcom?
As a whole, I love the series. However, I absolutely didn't like 4 or 5. I never understood how people preferred this over 3. The one single thing about 4 that I can say I did actually like was the combo system.
I dont understand what you mean. Many people prefer 3, but no hate for 4 because it was good too.
