Ford was tricked by a demon pretending to be a friend, causing him to build the portal that sucks him into an entirely different dimension having to do god knows what to survive for 30 years. And when he finally does get out of that dimension, his own dimension gets taken over by Bill. Then he gets captured by Bill who turns him into gold. And if turning into gold is anything like turning into stone, then the ENTIRE time he was gold, he was either reliving whatever horrible events he had in that other dimension or had to go through his worst nightmares and greatest fears, completely unable to escape
Dee Dee Playz however when stan was a child he had to be the tough won as that was the only thing he was good at then stan was kicked out between the ages of 16 to 18 had to survive through getting money any way he can had been to prison in three different country's and had to chew his way out of a trunk of a car at one point and when we see him again after that he's at the brink of becoming homeless again and is constantly being harassed and beaten up by the mob that he has to keep a bat at the side of the bed he then loses his brother again and spends thirty years of his life trying to bring him back as well as having to survive all the weird creates and help raise soos as it says in the real life journal that one of his memory's that dipper writes about is teaching a younge soos how to box not just to mention that in the show there are loads of hints of stan having depression Also as stan is about to have his memory whipped he says " guess I was good for something after all" meaning that his whole life he has felt useless or that he wasn't needed not to mention that he has been in ford's shadow most of his life so in a way I would say that they both have really dark back story's

I think Ice king's Back story is sadder his whole life as Ice king he never had any friends until Finn and Jake and Marceline became his friends his only friends were penguins. He lost the only girl he ever loved too. I also think his back story is sadder then Elsa from Frozen's back story I mean yes she did is freeze Arendelle but was able too unfreeze it and yes she didn't have any friends in her Ice Castle but she quickly got them back.

When you realise that Ford is on the list despite him being accepted and constantly being praised by his family and even getting a scholarship, a house and a successful life, but Grunkle Stan was often rejected, cast aside and criticized by his family, and even needing to deal with the guilt of pushing his brother into the portal
I would have put Stan on as well, but imagine what you would feel like if you were stuck between dimensions for many years and came back to realize your house in the woods was now taken by your greedy brother who stole your identity all while dealing with the bill stuff before and after
Pacifica, she's rich and was raised to be a certain way that she doesn't like, but when she meets dipper and mabel she get some confidence to stand up to her parents (and open the gate for the townsfolk). She just wants to have fun and be a kid like mabel and dipper, but she has to be perfect and live up to the *super* high expectation of being a northwest. She cant even choose which color dress she wants to wear (even if it's only a little bit off from what her parents want). They trained her like an animal, to behave when they ring a bell. It's honestly depressing when you think about it.

The Ice Kings backstory made me sad when I first heard it. Although Mr. Freezes origin from Batman the Animated series was the first backstory that really made me sad as a kid.
Both Stans backstories teared me up. Ford's story was more likely dark, as it said but Grunkle Stan's story was kinda depressing, for me. For thirty years, he just wanted to see his best brother but just because of a small mistake, his dreams just suddenly vanished as Ford was trapped in the portal. 😭😭😭

Stanley and Stanford both had tragic backstories for different reasons. Stanley had to suffer through life on his own after being kicked out by his father and was in and out of jail many times. He hardly had any money and was constantly being chased down by people who’d been swindled by him. Ford on the other hand was driven to the brink of insanity by Bill Cipher and his monster friends and lost countless nights of sleep. He was continuously teased for his six fingers, being called a freak and not being able to make friends with many people other than his brother. NOT TO MENTION HE SPENT 30 YEARS BETWEEN DIMENSIONS WITH MURDEROUS MONSTERS ALWAYS AFTER HIM. Either way, both suffered greatly. Let’s not forget Fiddleford though. He descended into madness just like the Ice King did, and his own son stopped speaking to him entirely. Also, Steven Universe technically had a pretty messed up backstory considering he is the reincarnation of Rose and had to deal with her mistakes and the problems with the diamonds.

When you read the Journal 3, you realise how dark is Ford's backstory. After he learned about Bill's betrayal, Bill would wait for him to sleep and possess Stanford, which led to total insomnia. To "convince" Stanford to give up, Bill made the townsfolk's eyes look bright yellow to Stan as if he was possessing them. Ford goes completely insane. There is a page in the Journal, scratched in a way to resemble watching eyes, says: "I was a puppet" "F was right" (referring to Fiddleford "Please help me" "It's all over" "Trust no one"

Well bill cipher has actually one of the darkest backstories i've seen in a cartoon. Bill lived in the 2nd dimension and KILLED EVERY ONE AND DESTROYED HIS OWN REALM! WTF! And then He was trapped in between dimensions for 1 TRILLION years, so yeah... 😂🤣
What about the character who's tribe was tricked into going to war with humans, then locked in a tomb with their tribe for probably around 40 years with no food, and coming out as the only one left after cannibalizing the rest of their tribe. This seems much darker than the characters on this list. It isn't just tragic but extremely dark.

Kenny's backstory is the exact same as a villain in a cartoon called wakfu except the villain goes insane betrays his race by allying with a alien race kills almost everyone in his race but he leaves everyone he was friends with they end up trapping him in this thing called a eliacube and when he comes back his last moment is just him saying it's unfair that out of who dies and comes back but hes the only one who keeps his memories he remembers the pain he felt while dying keep in mind the way he is immortal is the same as kenny except he ages normally so he experiences his whole childhood remembering his death and everything that happened to him in his previous life and it is implied that he has died a various amount of times Edit: Also in wakfu another villain should be here nox the main villain in season 1 his backstory is gold his character and the way he acts is amazing basically he was just a normal clock maker in the wakfu planet with a family but one day he found the eliacube he started researching and obsessing over it and spent more time researching the elia cube than with his family to the point where his family left and he didnt even notice after a while he found out his family was killed by Ogerest basically this demigod in the universe who is way too op and after realizing his family was dead and he was alone he went mad and after hearing "voices" from the eliacube he started sucking the life nature out of living to stay alive and to store enough life energy to rewrite his mistake even though he massacred thousands it wouldn't matter if he could go back in time and fix that one mistake as time would go on normally after that it would be a new timeline where that mistake never happened and when he finally tried using the cube he only went back 15 minutes just after a very important character died You should really check out wakfu if not you should at least try watching nox's backstory on youtube it is very interesting especially if you've already seen nox in the actual cartoon

Okay, I think I have a few. Stanley Pines. While his brother has a dark backstory, Stan has a much darker past. He was bullied along with his brother, accidentally broke his brother's machine and was kicked out of his house and was never able to finish high school. He was homeless for the longest time trying to make money for his family. When he finally saw his brother again, he was told to leave Ang go as far away as possible. After the fight, he lost his brother and impersonated Ford for 30 years, as well as opening the Mystery Shack. Eddsworld. This is the show as a whole. I had to put it here because it is pretty dark and sad. Edd Gould, along with his friends, Thomas Ridgwell, Matt Hargreaves, and Tord Larsson, Had created a web cartoon titled Eddsworld. At first, everything was fine. In 2008, however, Tord was dealing with cyber bullying and stalking, so he left the show and asked Edd to remove his character. 4 years later, Edd died of cancer, and it became more difficult to keep the show going. Tom and Matt managed to keep it going. 4 years pass, and a couple of episodes, The End had been released. It brought back Tord as a villain, which the fandom had loved. After the second part, Tom had told the audience that he was leaving Eddsworld. That left only Matt. After a 4 year break, a new episode was released called Fan Service 2. Eddsworld had returned. Dabi and Shoto Todoroki. Hear me out. By definition, anime is a cartoon. That does not make it for children!!!! Shoto was a very small child when the intense training had started. Compared to his father, his mother was very kind and supportive. She then noticed her little son around the corner, took her boiling kettle, and burned her son's face. When he got older, he went to UA to escape his miserable life. Nicole Waterson. I don't watch TAWOG that much unless I have to watch my little sister, but Nicole has a very dark backstory. From her birth, she was expected to do everything perfect, even was scolded for getting an "F" for female. It was used as a joke, but if you think about it, it can actually be really depressing and a little realistic for some families on this earth. Meteora. Her parents were the Queen of darkness, Eclipsa and a Monster. In Mewni, this is very frowned upon for the Butterfly bloodline. She was replaced by one of the piefolk and Meteora led a life of reforming princesses. Lena De Spell. What can I really say? She only lives as a puppet for Magica De Spell. Angel Dust. He was a Mafia member with his family, but overdosed one day and died. In the afterlife, he had become a stripper, but was one day r*ped and decided to help run the Happy Hotel with Charlie and Vaggie as an escape. That's all I can think of. Sorry about my English btw. When you realise that Ford is on the list despite him being accepted and constantly being praised by his family and even getting a scholarship, a house and a successful life, but Grunkle Stan was often rejected, cast aside and criticized by his family, and even needing to deal with the guilt of pushing his brother into the portal
I would have put Stan on as well, but imagine what you would feel like if you were stuck between dimensions for many years and came back to realize your house in the woods was now taken by your greedy brother who stole your identity all while dealing with the bill stuff before and after

Pacifica, she's rich and was raised to be a certain way that she doesn't like, but when she meets dipper and mabel she get some confidence to stand up to her parents (and open the gate for the townsfolk). She just wants to have fun and be a kid like mabel and dipper, but she has to be perfect and live up to the *super* high expectation of being a northwest. She cant even choose which color dress she wants to wear (even if it's only a little bit off from what her parents want). They trained her like an animal, to behave when they ring a bell. It's honestly depressing when you think about it.

MV96 my good sir 50yrs isn’t anything compared to a thousand years of which the I’ve king had to go through. He skipped over it but the reason why the ice king is obsessed with princesses is bc he called his ex fiancé princess all the time and even through his madness and sadness he still searched for his princess
The Ice Kings backstory made me sad when I first heard it. Although Mr. Freezes origin from Batman the Animated series was the first backstory that really made me sad as a kid.

Both Stans backstories teared me up. Ford's story was more likely dark, as it said but Grunkle Stan's story was kinda depressing, for me. For thirty years, he just wanted to see his best brother but just because of a small mistake, his dreams just suddenly vanished as Ford was trapped in the portal.

Stanley and Stanford both had tragic backstories for different reasons. Stanley had to suffer through life on his own after being kicked out by his father and was in and out of jail many times. He hardly had any money and was constantly being chased down by people who’d been swindled by him. Ford on the other hand was driven to the brink of insanity by Bill Cipher and his monster friends and lost countless nights of sleep. He was continuously teased for his six fingers, being called a freak and not being able to make friends with many people other than his brother. NOT TO MENTION HE SPENT 30 YEARS BETWEEN DIMENSIONS WITH MURDEROUS MONSTERS ALWAYS AFTER HIM. Either way, both suffered greatly. Let’s not forget Fiddleford though. He descended into madness just like the Ice King did, and his own son stopped speaking to him entirely. Also, Steven Universe technically had a pretty messed up backstory considering he is the reincarnation of Rose and had to deal with her mistakes and the problems with the diamonds.
I felt like Ice king should have been 1st, he also had the saddest backstory out of all in my opinion.

ford's backstory was depressing but if u read the journal 3 book. it becomes more depressing as he describes everyday was a nightmare, he had to stay up for 3 days straight, write in invisible ink, avoid contact with any humans, he was literally losing his sanity, one of his eye began to bleed, he even had to stock the bunker for upcoming apocalypse. he was literraly haunted by a demon

When you read the Journal 3, you realise how dark is Ford's backstory. After he learned about Bill's betrayal, Bill would wait for him to sleep and possess Stanford, which led to total insomnia. To "convince" Stanford to give up, Bill made the townsfolk's eyes look bright yellow to Stan as if he was possessing them. Ford goes completely insane. There is a page in the Journal, scratched in a way to resemble watching eyes, says:
"I was a puppet"
"F was right" (referring to Fiddleford
"Please help me"
"It's all over"
"Trust no one"

What about the character who's tribe was tricked into going to war with humans, then locked in a tomb with their tribe for probably around 40 years with no food, and coming out as the only one left after cannibalizing the rest of their tribe. This seems much darker than the characters on this list. It isn't just tragic but extremely dark.

Kenny's backstory is the exact same as a villain in a cartoon called wakfu except the villain goes insane betrays his race by allying with a alien race kills almost everyone in his race but he leaves everyone he was friends with they end up trapping him in this thing called a eliacube and when he comes back his last moment is just him saying it's unfair that out of who dies and comes back but hes the only one who keeps his memories he remembers the pain he felt while dying keep in mind the way he is immortal is the same as kenny except he ages normally so he experiences his whole childhood remembering his death and everything that happened to him in his previous life and it is implied that he has died a various amount of times

Also in wakfu another villain should be here nox the main villain in season 1 his backstory is gold his character and the way he acts is amazing basically he was just a normal clock maker in the wakfu planet with a family but one day he found the eliacube he started researching and obsessing over it and spent more time researching the elia cube than with his family to the point where his family left and he didnt even notice after a while he found out his family was killed by Ogerest basically this demigod in the universe who is way too op and after realizing his family was dead and he was alone he went mad and after hearing "voices" from the eliacube he started sucking the life nature out of living to stay alive and to store enough life energy to rewrite his mistake even though he massacred thousands it wouldn't matter if he could go back in time and fix that one mistake as time would go on normally after that it would be a new timeline where that mistake never happened and when he finally tried using the cube he only went back 15 minutes just after a very important character died
You should really check out wakfu if not you should at least try watching nox's backstory on youtube it is very interesting especially if you've already seen nox in the actual cartoon

Stanley Pines. While his brother has a dark backstory, Stan has a much darker past. He was bullied along with his brother, accidentally broke his brother's machine and was kicked out of his house and was never able to finish high school. He was homeless for the longest time trying to make money for his family. When he finally saw his brother again, he was told to leave Ang go as far away as possible. After the fight, he lost his brother and impersonated Ford for 30 years, as well as opening the Mystery Shack.
Eddsworld. This is the show as a whole. I had to put it here because it is pretty dark and sad. Edd Gould, along with his friends, Thomas Ridgwell, Matt Hargreaves, and Tord Larsson, Had created a web cartoon titled Eddsworld. At first, everything was fine. In 2008, however, Tord was dealing with cyber bullying and stalking, so he left the show and asked Edd to remove his character. 4 years later, Edd died of cancer, and it became more difficult to keep the show going. Tom and Matt managed to keep it going. 4 years pass, and a couple of episodes, The End had been released. It brought back Tord as a villain, which the fandom had loved. After the second part, Tom had told the audience that he was leaving Eddsworld. That left only Matt. After a 4 year break, a new episode was released called Fan Service 2. Eddsworld had returned.
Dabi and Shoto Todoroki. Hear me out. By definition, anime is a cartoon. That does not make it for children!!!! Anyway, Their parents had an arranged marriage, and their father was very judgemental and abusive. Dabi one day, could not take it anymore. He had left to join the League of Villains. Shoto was a very small child when the intense training had started. Compared to his father, his mother was very kind and supportive. But one day, Shoto overheard his mother saying over the phone that she couldn't take care of him anymore. She then noticed her little son around the corner, took her boiling kettle, and burned her son's face. When he got older, he went to UA to escape his miserable life.
Nicole Waterson. I don't watch TAWOG that much unless I have to watch my little sister, but Nicole has a very dark backstory. From her birth, she was expected to do everything perfect, even was scolded for getting an "F" for female. It was used as a joke, but if you think about it, it can actually be really depressing and a little realistic for some families on this earth.
Meteora. Her parents were the Queen of darkness, Eclipsa and a Monster. In Mewni, this is very frowned upon for the Butterfly bloodline. She was replaced by one of the piefolk and Meteora led a life of reforming princesses.
Lena De Spell. What can I really say? She only lives as a puppet for Magica De Spell.
Angel Dust. He was a Mafia member with his family, but overdosed one day and died. In the afterlife, he had become a stripper, but was one day r*ped and decided to help run the Happy Hotel with Charlie and Vaggie as an escape.
