I’ve been debating getting a super ultrawide for months, especially since starting to post races on UA-cam and the extra power that needs, but whenever I looked at sim racing forums people seemed to shame the idea of switching from tripes to a super ultrawide. Thanks for the nice comments mate. If you do decide to go down that path, maybe look for the newer model, it is only a little bit dearer but has newer technology like 1ms response and Display port 1.4. 👍

nice job man,most humorous indeed.i too swapped from triples to the 49,along with trackIR,about a year ago.no complaints at all,i use it for flight sims and racing,with a very similar set up to yours.a lot of people dont get the performance cost triples can have on systems and often end up dissapointed,channels like this are vital for us mortals to make educated decisions on equipment.onya cobber.
I am in the process of building my sim, ultrawide is definitely the way to go. Your video helped me in my process, so thank you for that. I am also coming from flightsims and as part of that I am used to using a trackIr. This helps me massively while flying, you should give it a go. I am sure the combination of the trackIr plus the ultrawide will be the sweet spot

Really great video Glen - very interesting. A clever way to up the detail levels of the sim and I'm becoming more and more convinced that an ultra-wide is an upgrade over triples and not the other way round. Always enjoy your racing videos and more like this would be great too!
This was a fairly high quality story video. Although I came looking for your experience on an ultrawide I actually stuck around and enjoyed this more story driven take. I was surprised about your lower sub count really top 200k sub quality. I'm unsure though if the sad music added or took away from it. Happily subbed I see your channel growing if it keeps to the standard presented in this video.

Awesome video Glen, lots of great information. I am in the same situation of you with my gtx 1080 and a old tv. I started to look into triples but quickly find out that my card will struggle. So again thanks for the video just what I was looking for to make a decision.
Just done the opposite, went from 49" Samsung, (the 1440p one), to 3*1440p 27". Have to say it's day 2 and I bloody love the triple setup. Still trying to get used to the bezels but overall the sense of scale and immersion beats the ultrawide for me. However I do think FPS games, Horizon ZD for example, are better on the ultrawide as you can only increase FOV so far. Hope the Samsung works out well for you is a brilliant monitor.
Thanks Bill. Yep 12 months on and still going strong. I loved my triples, but getting the curved ones made it do hard to tune in properly and more than likely lead to me wanting something else.
Commenting while I’m watching, this is soo cool, getting my G9 in a couple days been using single screen and VR, have a triple screen setup, ran it once but the bezels and loss of a screen for multitasking made triples overkill for me.

So, if you had a PC powerful enough to run the triple screens you wouldn't switch then? I'm in the market going from a single 55" TV to triple or super ultra wide, but I have a 3090..so should I stick with the triples?
I think at the time I might have stayed with triples with a better PC. I'm still glad I changed, though, as my room is so narrow it just looks a lot better. I still use it every day and don't regret changing to the 49inch. I'm getting the same, if not better immersion as there is no stretch that I was getting on the side monitors. Hahaha... $600 for a graphics card? Only on the black market mate. Here in Australia it is a minimum $2000 for a decent graphics card, and I'd still be left with a massive CPU shortage. I ended upgrading my computer with modern GPU and CPU but love the monitor still.

I've literally just purchased the new 57" Samsung ultrawide, hoping it's delivered today, and the triples will come down tomorrow. Will be a huge step up going from 1080 to 4k, but I can't wait, I may well document the rebuild of my rig too just because it won't have an overhaul like this for some time now. I’m mostly a VR guy but I’d like to have a monitor that I can race in from time to time in iRacing and to use for some of the other sims. Right now I have a crappy 24” monitor on my racing PC because I don’t use it for anything but starting iRacing etc. I’ve been going back and forth between a 49” and triples. This video helped a lot. I’d love to hear how much compromise you feel there is on FOV and awareness of cars around you. That is the one issue I have with VR. I’m going to probably go with a Pimax as soon as I can find a new graphics card to buy that will run it mostly for POV. No cards anywhere at the moment.
You do lose a little bit of the edges, but in the Skip Barber you could only see the roll bar anyway. GT cars might be different, but I lost nothing with visual awareness when I got the new monitor. 👍
Interesting... I'm thinking I probably would have kept the tripples and upgraded the GPU first, which would be the major hurdle to any new PC build, and then later on down the line upgrade the CPU motherboard and RAM, resuing all of the other parts from the exisiting PC. That is just me though and I am an experienced PC builder (Not sure if that is the case with you or not). Glad you found a solution to your probelm though! Enjoyed your content tremendously
Thanks Bobby. Yeah an upgrade of a GPU to a i74790 would have had minimal results. A GPU in Australia at the time was about 2000AUD dollars and the monitor was around 1000AUD. I've since upgraded the PC, but kept the screen and still love it. Thanks for watching. 👍

@@GleNRG Whoops. Wasn't thinking about AUD. I was paying $2,200 max for a 3080's here in the U.S.. I mine with over 30 cards. Also, the cpu and even ram don't matter that much. It's 90% GPU. The cpu and ram would help with load times though.

G'day mate, and thanks for the nice comments. It's been a long time since I streamed on Twitch, and I'm sure there have been a lot of changes. I used to use the auto setup in OBS for the twitch settings, seems to work OK. Also used "EposVOX" videos on UA-cam for fine tuning settings, he has some videos that run you through every setting step by step. Happy streaming. 👍
Great video mate. I'm a little perplexed however. I still play on my 7yr old build. I5 4690k and gtx 980ti. I still get 50-100 frames in daytime racing with decent graphic settings. I'm running triple 24s with 1080p
Thanks James, im glad you enjoyed. It was more about the detail as opposed to the frames. As I said in the video I had to turn off so much detail with all the updates over time. It got to the point where I really started to notice it, which took away from the immersion of the racing. That being said, I had a lot of software running in the background, like Obs Studio, Crew Cief, Racelabs, Streamdeck etc. I have since had a PC update and don't need to worry about frames or detail as much. I still love the monitor though and don't want to change to anything else. Thanks for watching mate. 👍
In my opinion vr is much more immersive. The fact that you can look anywhere is just game changing. Also the biggest point of vr which you can never experience on normal displays is depth. In vr your eyes are looking at two different displays that are displaying two slightly different things which imitates reality. Being in vr gives you another sense this sense makes it extremely hard to go back to a regular display because you can see how far or close something is.
Amazing video and story timeline. I was thinking triples as I have the hardware to run it but after seeing this, I want to go for the ultrawide. Honestly, would you prefer triples over the ultrawide if you had the hardware to run it? Or are you glad that you made the switch.
Thanks for the nice comments mate. I have upgraded the PC since this video, and personally would probably stay with the ultrawide. There was a lot of fiddling and tuning with the triples to get the FOV right, which I could never get. IRacing has since upgraded their FOV calculator in game which makes it easier to tune the FOV for triples. But yeah I'd stay with the ultrawide, I love it. 👍
Yep, that's about $6k Aus compared to $1100 aus for the monitor. It fixed the problem at the time, but have since upgraded my PC. Still have the monitor and absolutely love it. 👍
Hehe, nah didn't drop anything. I get plenty of airflow where the PC is. The inlet is sufficient at the front, and I've drilled massive holes into the shelf on the other side to provide more than enough exhaust. What's more, the radiator is at the top, where there is more than enough space. 👍
Hehe, it's was good in its day. Technology moves so fast though, future proofing will only ever get you so far. 👍 I've upgraded my PC since, and use my old one as a "Home NAS". It is great for that now. 🤣

I still steam at 1080p, but I have adjusted the game capture of the main monitor to suit my layout when recording races. I just played around with the size for a bit, then right click, transform and down the bottom of that pop out is centre horizontal. 👍
The problem wasn't your triple monitors, it was your GPU, even 2 years ago from now, you could have picked up a much better gpu for the same price as that 49inch. On a side note, Upgrading your CPU shouldnt have been your first goto, nor buying a new PC altogether. If you wanted to upgrade your cpu, just replace the motherboard,cpu and the ram. Anyway, you went down the monitor route, thats fine, you're happy with it, no big deal. 👍

When I want to keep my 1080ti, it seems triple 1080p does make even more sense for me than 1440p ultrawide due to the load of 118,5% you mentioned. I'm really worried I'm driving around with 70 fps max.
70fps is fine to drive with. The monitor response time is the most important thing. You can tune the graphics down to suit the fps if you like. I like to find a Happy medium between visual effects and fps. The pro drivers turn everything down, even removing grandstands to make sure they are getting maximum fps.
Nah, a new PC here in Aus is at least $4000. The monitor was just over $1000, and at the time I could barely afford that. I've since come into some money and upgraded the PC, and using the old one as a Nas.... works really well. 👍
Wow! Such a great video, the type of honest and personal content that UA-cam is supposed to be for... I got a 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide to try out at home and was wondering about one of these super-ultra-wides. Some say that at 49" the 5120x1080 is a bit low res for detailed work. I mean that it would be my main and only monitor so I guess a 5120x1440 would be better. Assume a 2060 Super (8GB) could handle it. Well at least regular desktop stuff it could, not sure about gaming above 60 FPS though 🤣
Thanks Davy. Yeah the 2060 will probably struggle to get to that 144 fps mark at that resolution, although you should be well above 60. If you end up getting the monitor, an idea might be to find a sweet spot for gaming fps with your setup and cap the frames in Nvidia control panel so it never over pushes while gaming. 👍
Just a thought here I may be completely off but could it be possible that you bought a hammered 1080 ? This is obviously suggesting that you bought the card second hand I figured that’s what you must have done because I don’t think that the 1080s were for sale new when you upgraded ( I may be completely off here so just tell me to shut up if that’s the case ) :)
Gday mate, all good. When I bought the PC pre built, it had a GTX 980 in it. I upgraded a couple of years later with a brand new 1080, just before the 20 series came out. It was great back in the day, even played 4k PCars smoothly on my old 4k TV. Every update it got just a tiny bit slower and after a while struggled with the triples. It's not just iRacing I have running on the PC, there are a heap of programs running in the background, namely OBS, which also taxes the GPU while recording. I have updated my PC and GPU since this vid and have no more issues with FPS. I can actually crank iRacing up 99% now. 👌

I went from a single 27" to an ultrawide 35". That was a big upgrade, but I still wanted triples. So a few months later, I got triple 27's. My PC is pretty high end, so I didn't experience the FPS issues so much. My biggest issue is that I play a variety of games, racing sims and flight sims and the worst part of triples is trying to configure every game to work properly. It's a much bigger pain that I ever anticipated. Some games required you to run NVIDIA surround, while others didn't work well with it. I just recently went back to the 35" ultrawide and now more of my time is spent gaming instead of screwing with settings to get things working. I may try a 49" in the future whenever my 35" has an issue.
I think you nailed it Pistol. The triple setup was so finicky, some games like GTA 5 just didn't support it, resulting in massive stretching. I have had the monitorbfornanwhile now and still love using it every day. Thanks for watching. 👍
G'day mate, i used to use an app called HUD Dash. It was made a long time ago and is no longer available unfortunately. There are heaps of apps out there now that do the same job, some free and some cost a small fee.
I've just picked up a 43" inch Super Ultra Wide, Glen. Samnsung panel but a budget make, which saved me £300. I'll try not be too self conscious that you've an extra 6" inches!!!. It's coming tomorrow. Might take a break from VR. Expecting all kinds of malarky trying to get the FOV right.
Great work mate, you'll love it. I don't tend to do mathematically correct FOV. I stick with what feels comfortable, just play around with it until you feel at home. Seeya on track soon mate.

Hey Glen, thanks for the video! I’m on a 55“ tv now but want to go 32“ triples this year. I own a 6800XT, R5 3600 and 32GB of RAM currently running ACC in 4k high. I thought of going 1440p/144 or 165. wanted to go 49“ uw but when I had the chance to drive in a rig with that beast, I was missing some height and side screen „action“. Edit: by you calc I push 8.2 mio on my flat 4k. Triples at 1440 would be around 11 mio, so triples in 1440 at high settings should work with my System, right?! thanks for the helpful insight as is resembles my current situation. Glen, good job on the video. You seem to be very knowledgable about this monitor. I recently purchased the G49G9 Odyssey. I’ve been having trouble getting everything the same as it was on my 32” Dell. I have everything setup now except for my UI and black boxes. For some reason they seem to be locked into what appears to be the center screen of a triple monitor setup. I want them on the right side of the monitor but I can only move them to what appears to be the edge of a center monitor. The (alt k) highlights the box but limits me to the center. What can I do?
Thanks Bob. There is a setting to change in the app.ini file in the iRacing mydocuments folder. I'm at work at the moment, but will look it up when I get home if you like. Then I can tell you exactly what to change. 👍
Sorry it took so long, but I finally found it. First close iRacing. If you open the app.ini file in notepad and scroll down to where it says Graphics, the first option is "DriveUIFullScreen" which needs to be changed from 0 to 1. Save the file and then load up iRacing again. That should fix the issue, hope it helps.
Great Video, you did the same thought process as me when it came time for deciding on a monitor. I went back and fourth between triples and SUW and ended up settling on the more recent Samsung 49" you talked about. I am so glad that I did. I also toyed with VR as I also have a Rift S but I never liked it. I've since added a second 24" monitor which I use for OBS and streaming and sadly my current 1660 ti is starting to lag behind so I am now hunting a 3070 or 3060ti. Thankfully when I built my PC I knew I would be making upgrades as I went along so I am future proofed for a few years on upgrades. My video card was the only weak link when I built it but that was back when the 20 series cards were out and the rumors of the 30 series cards were just starting to pop up so I opted to hold off on dumping a ton of money into a GPU. Thanks Sean. You could connect your monitor to the motherboard instead of the GPU and it will transfer the load onto the CPU instead. I have my side monitor hooked up to the motherboard and it uses like 1% CPU to display all my extra apps running in the background. Hope that helps in the meantime. 👍

Black Friday/ cyber Monday is the best time to buy pc parts. I purchased a 49” for exactly the same reason. I like high details for immersion but also like high ffps. It’s still like have 2 x27” screens. Also I don’t like the bezels. I think I could build a pc for less than 5k. I’d have to crunch some numbers.
I adore my ultrawide. I've played a lot with layout and positioning and landed on putting the screen over the body of the wheel motor, with just enough clearance behind the shifters that my fingers don't brush the screen when turning/shifting at the same time. FWIW that let me get to a 19.5" viewing distance and a 102 degree fov. That extra 5-10 degrees can help quite a bit in getting mirrors into the frame. You probably aren't in a hurry to take it apart and move things around again, but that helped quite a bit for me.

From your video, i understood that your 1080 wasn’t able to handle the triples. Was your processor at the limit also ? I didn’t thought Iracing was now so difficult to run (haven’t played for a couple of years).
Yeah, the CPU was getting up there too, especially with all the apps running in the background like OBS, but the GPU was always pegged at 100% when racing. iRacing has improved its graphics quality big time in the last couple of years, now that I have a new PC as well, the sim looks awesome.
A very clever and informative video. Sometimes you have to reevaluate what's more important in life. Play is just fun and family and immediate needs should come first. I would do the same. Thanks mate. It does all depend on your PC spec with these newer 1440p monitors, a lot more pixels than the 1080p version. The newer models always bring some extra features so I would go with that theory. The new iRacing display calculator is very cool for handling the stretch on the curved. 👍
Can't really vouch for the reliability of that model. Your PC spec will run the monitor no worries, buy you probably won't be able to run at Max detail.
Nice video! Do you get any flex in monitor? Ive got extreme simracing p1 cockpit with integrated tv rack and it seems like whenever forces are too heavy on wheel the monitor will wobble and flex. Is this a problem?
Yeah with this setup that I have there, if I had the sim wheeled up to the monitor stand it would shake and flex a little. I don't think it's a major issue, just check the Vesa screws every now and then. I prefer to have my rig and monitor stand separate. 👍
One of the best videos I've seen in a long while, I just bought the most recent model but found going from triples I no longer can see both mirrors in sedans, I run GT3 and my vision has dropped significantly, did you ever encounter and if so have a resolution for this problem?
Thank you so much for your nice comments mate. As far as FOV within a GT3 car, you do lose a little bit compared to triples, but you can make up for it by tuning your Virtual Mirror. I have mine set up to match my main FOV which is 86 degrees. I use my virtual mirror all the time to anticipate my rivals, and have found that more than makes up for the loss in front facing real estate. Thanks again. 👍
Nah not really. IRacing couldn't really calculate the outer monitors properly, I think it was the curve. The fisheye was annoying and I ended up ignoring it anyway. The 49" has fixed that issue straight away, and I get a clear view without bezels. I love it. 👍
No worries mate. If you want a really good insight into owning one of these monitors, Quirkitized who streams on twitch has a 2nd stream running simultaneously with an over the shoulder camera going. It's great for showing exactly what he is looking at without all of his overlays. Definitely worth a watch. 👍

Hey mate, I see at 4:52 you have your garage menu inset. I can’t seem to figure out how to not have that menu full screen, get a sore neck on the ultra wide! How did you get the menu to be narrower? Assuming it’s in app.ini?
G'day mate. Yeah in the app.ini file, go down to "graphics" and the first option is for ui to be full screen. I think that is the one that changes it, 0 for standard and in the middle, and 1 for full screen. Hope that helps
How did you get the i racing Hud in game to be positioned to the extremities of the screen. I’m having issues with this it keeps it all in the middle portion of the screen

I’m confused by the price tag put on the PC needed to run triples. I upgraded my old pc by replacing the mobo and a 10th Gen cpu and amd 6 series gpu. Less than $800 US.
Yeah that was more of a wish list I made on a local PC store website. Stuff is expensive here in Aus, I ended up upgrading my PC to a medium to high end for $4000. Also PC parts got expensive during covid times. 👍
I'm one of the ones that put a dislike on the video. I don't agree with the purchase decision logic at all. You could have bought a used reasonable cpu+ram+motherboard for 500 AUD + an RTX 3080 around December 2020 for 1800 AUD. That is 2300 AUD total. Now you've spent 1300 AUD on a product that you did not need and you are still stuck with a crappy computer. You've regressed, not progressed.

I have since bought a new computer and have not regressed at all. I now have 2 awesome computers, one with an RTX card..... what have you got? @@GleNRG 3080s were relatively cheap at the end of 2020. Used parts are nothing to sneeze at. I bought used PC parts when I was young and had limited money. They never failed me. I mean, you have/had very old parts in your PC that you've used, hows that any better? What do you think other people do with their PC parts, drag them through dirt? Clean them with water? A used GPU might be suspect in today's world of mining, so that would be a used part I would avoid. Congratulations on your new computer, but I don't understand why you take this as some sort of length measuring contest, but since you asked, I have an Aorus Xtreme 3090, an AMD 3950X, a ROG crosshair VIII Hero Wi-fi, 64 GB of RAM, HP Reverb G2, P1-X sim racing cockpit, Fanatec DD2 with the Porsche wheel, Clubsport steering wheel Formula v2 with Advanced Paddle module, Clubsport pedals V3 inverted, Clubsport shifter and hand brake. For real life track days I have a Corvette C6 Z06 and a DD2 kart. But my post wasn't about who's stuff is better, it was about you portraying yourself to be making smart decisions money wise and then replacing relatively expensively the parts on your PC that were not the problem, whilst leaving the parts that were a problem untouched. Also, I don't get the reference to a thumb and frown. Is that some Australian smack talk?

I’ve been debating getting a super ultrawide for months, especially since starting to post races on UA-cam and the extra power that needs, but whenever I looked at sim racing forums people seemed to shame the idea of switching from tripes to a super ultrawide. nice job man,most humorous indeed.i too swapped from triples to the 49,along with trackIR,about a year ago.no complaints at all,i use it for flight sims and racing,with a very similar set up to yours.a lot of people dont get the performance cost triples can have on systems and often end up dissapointed,channels like this are vital for us mortals to make educated decisions on equipment.onya cobber.

I am in the process of building my sim, ultrawide is definitely the way to go. Your video helped me in my process, so thank you for that. I am also coming from flightsims and as part of that I am used to using a trackIr. This helps me massively while flying, you should give it a go. I am sure the combination of the trackIr plus the ultrawide will be the sweet spot

This was a fairly high quality story video. Although I came looking for your experience on an ultrawide I actually stuck around and enjoyed this more story driven take. I was surprised about your lower sub count really top 200k sub quality. I'm unsure though if the sad music added or took away from it. Just done the opposite, went from 49" Samsung, (the 1440p one), to 3*1440p 27". Have to say it's day 2 and I bloody love the triple setup. Still trying to get used to the bezels but overall the sense of scale and immersion beats the ultrawide for me. However I do think FPS games, Horizon ZD for example, are better on the ultrawide as you can only increase FOV so far. Hope the Samsung works out well for you is a brilliant monitor.
Thanks Bill. Yep 12 months on and still going strong. I loved my triples, but getting the curved ones made it do hard to tune in properly and more than likely lead to me wanting something else.

So, if you had a PC powerful enough to run the triple screens you wouldn't switch then? I'm in the market going from a single 55" TV to triple or super ultra wide, but I have a 3090..so should I stick with the triples?
I think at the time I might have stayed with triples with a better PC. I'm still glad I changed, though, as my room is so narrow it just looks a lot better. I still use it every day and don't regret changing to the 49inch. I'm getting the same, if not better immersion as there is no stretch that I was getting on the side monitors. How does it save you money? You spent $1300 on an ultrawide instead of just spending $600 on a new graphics card.
Hahaha... $600 for a graphics card? Only on the black market mate. Here in Australia it is a minimum $2000 for a decent graphics card, and I'd still be left with a massive CPU shortage.

I’m mostly a VR guy but I’d like to have a monitor that I can race in from time to time in iRacing and to use for some of the other sims. Right now I have a crappy 24” monitor on my racing PC because I don’t use it for anything but starting iRacing etc. I’ve been going back and forth between a 49” and triples. This video helped a lot. I’d love to hear how much compromise you feel there is on FOV and awareness of cars around you. That is the one issue I have with VR. I’m going to probably go with a Pimax as soon as I can find a new graphics card to buy that will run it mostly for POV. No cards anywhere at the moment.
You do lose a little bit of the edges, but in the Skip Barber you could only see the roll bar anyway. GT cars might be different, but I lost nothing with visual awareness when I got the new monitor. 👍
Interesting... I'm thinking I probably would have kept the tripples and upgraded the GPU first, which would be the major hurdle to any new PC build, and then later on down the line upgrade the CPU motherboard and RAM, resuing all of the other parts from the exisiting PC. That is just me though and I am an experienced PC builder (Not sure if that is the case with you or not). Glad you found a solution to your probelm though! Enjoyed your content tremendously
Thanks Bobby. Yeah an upgrade of a GPU to a i74790 would have had minimal results. A GPU in Australia at the time was about 2000AUD dollars and the monitor was around 1000AUD. I've since upgraded the PC, but kept the screen and still love it. Thanks for watching. 👍

@@GleNRG Whoops. Wasn't thinking about AUD. I was paying $2,200 max for a 3080's here in the U.S.. I mine with over 30 cards. Also, the cpu and even ram don't matter that much. It's 90% GPU. The cpu and ram would help with load times though.

G'day mate, and thanks for the nice comments. It's been a long time since I streamed on Twitch, and I'm sure there have been a lot of changes. I used to use the auto setup in OBS for the twitch settings, seems to work OK. Also used "EposVOX" videos on UA-cam for fine tuning settings, he has some videos that run you through every setting step by step. Happy streaming. 👍
Great video mate. I'm a little perplexed however. I still play on my 7yr old build. I5 4690k and gtx 980ti. I still get 50-100 frames in daytime racing with decent graphic settings. I'm running triple 24s with 1080p
Thanks James, im glad you enjoyed. It was more about the detail as opposed to the frames. As I said in the video I had to turn off so much detail with all the updates over time. It got to the point where I really started to notice it, which took away from the immersion of the racing.
That being said, I had a lot of software running in the background, like Obs Studio, Crew Cief, Racelabs, Streamdeck etc.
I have since had a PC update and don't need to worry about frames or detail as much. I still love the monitor though and don't want to change to anything else.

In my opinion vr is much more immersive. The fact that you can look anywhere is just game changing. Also the biggest point of vr which you can never experience on normal displays is depth. In vr your eyes are looking at two different displays that are displaying two slightly different things which imitates reality. Being in vr gives you another sense this sense makes it extremely hard to go back to a regular display because you can see how far or close something is.

Thanks for the nice comments mate. I have upgraded the PC since this video, and personally would probably stay with the ultrawide. There was a lot of fiddling and tuning with the triples to get the FOV right, which I could never get. IRacing has since upgraded their FOV calculator in game which makes it easier to tune the FOV for triples. But yeah I'd stay with the ultrawide, I love it. 👍
You can get a i9 13900 with a 4090 for not much more than $3k USD now - i am sure it is much more in AUS.
Yep, that's about $6k Aus compared to $1100 aus for the monitor. It fixed the problem at the time, but have since upgraded my PC. Still have the monitor and absolutely love it. 👍

Hehe, nah didn't drop anything. I get plenty of airflow where the PC is. The inlet is sufficient at the front, and I've drilled massive holes into the shelf on the other side to provide more than enough exhaust. What's more, the radiator is at the top, where there is more than enough space. 👍

I still steam at 1080p, but I have adjusted the game capture of the main monitor to suit my layout when recording races. I just played around with the size for a bit, then right click, transform and down the bottom of that pop out is centre horizontal. 👍

The problem wasn't your triple monitors, it was your GPU, even 2 years ago from now, you could have picked up a much better gpu for the same price as that 49inch.
On a side note, Upgrading your CPU shouldnt have been your first goto, nor buying a new PC altogether.
If you wanted to upgrade your cpu, just replace the motherboard,cpu and the ram.
Anyway, you went down the monitor route, thats fine, you're happy with it, no big deal. 👍

When I want to keep my 1080ti, it seems triple 1080p does make even more sense for me than 1440p ultrawide due to the load of 118,5% you mentioned. I'm really worried I'm driving around with 70 fps max.
70fps is fine to drive with. The monitor response time is the most important thing. You can tune the graphics down to suit the fps if you like. I like to find a Happy medium between visual effects and fps.
The pro drivers turn everything down, even removing grandstands to make sure they are getting maximum fps.
i upgraded my 1080ti to a 3080ti in the pc and it was enough, dont need to change motherboard and cpu etc.

Nah, a new PC here in Aus is at least $4000. The monitor was just over $1000, and at the time I could barely afford that.

Wow! Such a great video, the type of honest and personal content that UA-cam is supposed to be for... I got a 34" 3440x1440 ultrawide to try out at home and was wondering about one of these super-ultra-wides. Some say that at 49" the 5120x1080 is a bit low res for detailed work. I mean that it would be my main and only monitor so I guess a 5120x1440 would be better. Assume a 2060 Super (8GB) could handle it. Well at least regular desktop stuff it could, not sure about gaming above 60 FPS though 🤣
Thanks Davy. Yeah the 2060 will probably struggle to get to that 144 fps mark at that resolution, although you should be well above 60. If you end up getting the monitor, an idea might be to find a sweet spot for gaming fps with your setup and cap the frames in Nvidia control panel so it never over pushes while gaming. 👍
Just a thought here I may be completely off but could it be possible that you bought a hammered 1080 ? This is obviously suggesting that you bought the card second hand I figured that’s what you must have done because I don’t think that the 1080s were for sale new when you upgraded ( I may be completely off here so just tell me to shut up if that’s the case ) :)
Gday mate, all good. When I bought the PC pre built, it had a GTX 980 in it. I upgraded a couple of years later with a brand new 1080, just before the 20 series came out. It was great back in the day, even played 4k PCars smoothly on my old 4k TV. Every update it got just a tiny bit slower and after a while struggled with the triples.
It's not just iRacing I have running on the PC, there are a heap of programs running in the background, namely OBS, which also taxes the GPU while recording.
I have updated my PC and GPU since this vid and have no more issues with FPS. I can actually crank iRacing up 99% now. 👌

I went from a single 27" to an ultrawide 35". That was a big upgrade, but I still wanted triples. So a few months later, I got triple 27's. My PC is pretty high end, so I didn't experience the FPS issues so much. My biggest issue is that I play a variety of games, racing sims and flight sims and the worst part of triples is trying to configure every game to work properly. It's a much bigger pain that I ever anticipated. Some games required you to run NVIDIA surround, while others didn't work well with it. I just recently went back to the 35" ultrawide and now more of my time is spent gaming instead of screwing with settings to get things working. I may try a 49" in the future whenever my 35" has an issue.
I think you nailed it Pistol. The triple setup was so finicky, some games like GTA 5 just didn't support it, resulting in massive stretching.
I have had the monitorbfornanwhile now and still love using it every day.

G'day mate, i used to use an app called HUD Dash. It was made a long time ago and is no longer available unfortunately. There are heaps of apps out there now that do the same job, some free and some cost a small fee.
I've just picked up a 43" inch Super Ultra Wide, Glen. Samnsung panel but a budget make, which saved me £300. I'll try not be too self conscious that you've an extra 6" inches!!!. It's coming tomorrow. Might take a break from VR. Expecting all kinds of malarky trying to get the FOV right.
Great work mate, you'll love it. I don't tend to do mathematically correct FOV. I stick with what feels comfortable, just play around with it until you feel at home. Seeya on track soon mate.

I thought of going 1440p/144 or 165. wanted to go 49“ uw but when I had the chance to drive in a rig with that beast, I was missing some height and side screen „action“. Edit: by you calc I push 8.2 mio on my flat 4k. Triples at 1440 would be around 11 mio, so triples in 1440 at high settings should work with my System, right?! thanks for the helpful insight as is resembles my current situation. Glen, good job on the video. You seem to be very knowledgable about this monitor. I recently purchased the G49G9 Odyssey. I’ve been having trouble getting everything the same as it was on my 32” Dell. I have everything setup now except for my UI and black boxes. For some reason they seem to be locked into what appears to be the center screen of a triple monitor setup. I want them on the right side of the monitor but I can only move them to what appears to be the edge of a center monitor. The (alt k) highlights the box but limits me to the center. What can I do?
Thanks Bob. There is a setting to change in the app.ini file in the iRacing mydocuments folder. I'm at work at the moment, but will look it up when I get home if you like. Then I can tell you exactly what to change. 👍
Sorry it took so long, but I finally found it. First close iRacing. If you open the app.ini file in notepad and scroll down to where it says Graphics, the first option is "DriveUIFullScreen" which needs to be changed from 0 to 1. Save the file and then load up iRacing again. That should fix the issue, hope it helps.
whoops, just scrolled down the file a bit. There is an option for "SessionUIFullScreeen" change that to 1 as well.
Great Video, you did the same thought process as me when it came time for deciding on a monitor. I went back and fourth between triples and SUW and ended up settling on the more recent Samsung 49" you talked about. I am so glad that I did. I also toyed with VR as I also have a Rift S but I never liked it. I've since added a second 24" monitor which I use for OBS and streaming and sadly my current 1660 ti is starting to lag behind so I am now hunting a 3070 or 3060ti. Thankfully when I built my PC I knew I would be making upgrades as I went along so I am future proofed for a few years on upgrades. My video card was the only weak link when I built it but that was back when the 20 series cards were out and the rumors of the 30 series cards were just starting to pop up so I opted to hold off on dumping a ton of money into a GPU. Thanks Sean. You could connect your monitor to the motherboard instead of the GPU and it will transfer the load onto the CPU instead. I have my side monitor hooked up to the motherboard and it uses like 1% CPU to display all my extra apps running in the background. Hope that helps in the meantime. 👍

Yeah my old CPU had the gpu inside which meant that I could run 5 monitors when I had the triple setup. 👍
Great video! Im gonna do the same, go from 3 to one ultrawide. Just done with all the fiddle with cable management and it takes up so much space
Thanks Daniel. I'm still running the Ultrawide and absolutely love it. Setting up 3 x 32 inch curved monitors was absolutely pain. As I said in the video, i dont miss the outer edges of the outside monitors at all. Enjoy the new setup. 👍

I purchased a 49” for exactly the same reason. I like high details for immersion but also like high ffps.
It’s still like have 2 x27” screens.
Also I don’t like the bezels.
I think I could build a pc for less than 5k. I’d have to crunch some numbers.
Yeah I got mine on special. I was a bit greedy with the PC spec, but if you're going to dream may as well have a 3090... hehe 👍
I adore my ultrawide. I've played a lot with layout and positioning and landed on putting the screen over the body of the wheel motor, with just enough clearance behind the shifters that my fingers don't brush the screen when turning/shifting at the same time. FWIW that let me get to a 19.5" viewing distance and a 102 degree fov. That extra 5-10 degrees can help quite a bit in getting mirrors into the frame. You probably aren't in a hurry to take it apart and move things around again, but that helped quite a bit for me.

Here, Linus Tech Tips did it and it was super wide. They didn't really wrap the monitors around though. I like your thinking.... 👍
From your video, i understood that your 1080 wasn’t able to handle the triples. Was your processor at the limit also ? I didn’t thought Iracing was now so difficult to run (haven’t played for a couple of years).
Yeah, the CPU was getting up there too, especially with all the apps running in the background like OBS, but the GPU was always pegged at 100% when racing. iRacing has improved its graphics quality big time in the last couple of years, now that I have a new PC as well, the sim looks awesome.
A very clever and informative video. Sometimes you have to reevaluate what's more important in life. Play is just fun and family and immediate needs should come first. I would do the same. Thanks mate. It does all depend on your PC spec with these newer 1440p monitors, a lot more pixels than the 1080p version. The newer models always bring some extra features so I would go with that theory.
The new iRacing display calculator is very cool for handling the stretch on the curved. 👍

Can't really vouch for the reliability of that model. Your PC spec will run the monitor no worries, buy you probably won't be able to run at Max detail.

Nice video! Do you get any flex in monitor? Ive got extreme simracing p1 cockpit with integrated tv rack and it seems like whenever forces are too heavy on wheel the monitor will wobble and flex. Is this a problem?
Yeah with this setup that I have there, if I had the sim wheeled up to the monitor stand it would shake and flex a little. I don't think it's a major issue, just check the Vesa screws every now and then. I prefer to have my rig and monitor stand separate. 👍
One of the best videos I've seen in a long while, I just bought the most recent model but found going from triples I no longer can see both mirrors in sedans, I run GT3 and my vision has dropped significantly, did you ever encounter and if so have a resolution for this problem?
Thank you so much for your nice comments mate. As far as FOV within a GT3 car, you do lose a little bit compared to triples, but you can make up for it by tuning your Virtual Mirror. I have mine set up to match my main FOV which is 86 degrees. I use my virtual mirror all the time to anticipate my rivals, and have found that more than makes up for the loss in front facing real estate. Thanks again. 👍

Nah not really. IRacing couldn't really calculate the outer monitors properly, I think it was the curve. The fisheye was annoying and I ended up ignoring it anyway.
The 49" has fixed that issue straight away, and I get a clear view without bezels. I love it. 👍

No worries mate. If you want a really good insight into owning one of these monitors, Quirkitized who streams on twitch has a 2nd stream running simultaneously with an over the shoulder camera going. It's great for showing exactly what he is looking at without all of his overlays. Definitely worth a watch. 👍
@@GleNRG I don’t even have a rig. Bought my son a $4k gaming PC and he doesn’t use it. So I budgeted another $7 or so to build a game room with a sim racer in a spare apartment I have above my garage. So I’m building from scratch.

Hey mate, I see at 4:52 you have your garage menu inset. I can’t seem to figure out how to not have that menu full screen, get a sore neck on the ultra wide! How did you get the menu to be narrower? Assuming it’s in app.ini?
G'day mate. Yeah in the app.ini file, go down to "graphics" and the first option is for ui to be full screen. I think that is the one that changes it, 0 for standard and in the middle, and 1 for full screen. Hope that helps

How did you get the i racing Hud in game to be positioned to the extremities of the screen. I’m having issues with this it keeps it all in the middle portion of the screen

I’m confused by the price tag put on the PC needed to run triples. I upgraded my old pc by replacing the mobo and a 10th Gen cpu and amd 6 series gpu. Less than $800 US.
Yeah that was more of a wish list I made on a local PC store website. Stuff is expensive here in Aus, I ended up upgrading my PC to a medium to high end for $4000. Also PC parts got expensive during covid times. 👍

I'm one of the ones that put a dislike on the video. I don't agree with the purchase decision logic at all. You could have bought a used reasonable cpu+ram+motherboard for 500 AUD + an RTX 3080 around December 2020 for 1800 AUD. That is 2300 AUD total. Now you've spent 1300 AUD on a product that you did not need and you are still stuck with a crappy computer. You've regressed, not progressed.
Wow, a 3080 for 1800Aud.... what planet do you live on? Why would I want to scrape around for used parts that have no guarantee or knowledge of where they have been. I have since bought a new computer and have not regressed at all. I now have 2 awesome computers, one with an RTX card..... what have you got? Just a sore thumb and a frown on your forehead that you can't wipe off...

@@GleNRG 3080s were relatively cheap at the end of 2020. Used parts are nothing to sneeze at. I bought used PC parts when I was young and had limited money. They never failed me. I mean, you have/had very old parts in your PC that you've used, hows that any better? What do you think other people do with their PC parts, drag them through dirt? Clean them with water? A used GPU might be suspect in today's world of mining, so that would be a used part I would avoid. Congratulations on your new computer, but I don't understand why you take this as some sort of length measuring contest, but since you asked, I have an Aorus Xtreme 3090, an AMD 3950X, a ROG crosshair VIII Hero Wi-fi, 64 GB of RAM, HP Reverb G2, P1-X sim racing cockpit, Fanatec DD2 with the Porsche wheel, Clubsport steering wheel Formula v2 with Advanced Paddle module, Clubsport pedals V3 inverted, Clubsport shifter and hand brake. For real life track days I have a Corvette C6 Z06 and a DD2 kart. But my post wasn't about who's stuff is better, it was about you portraying yourself to be making smart decisions money wise and then replacing relatively expensively the parts on your PC that were not the problem, whilst leaving the parts that were a problem untouched. Also, I don't get the reference to a thumb and frown. Is that some Australian smack talk?
