Your insight seems to be impeccable. Many things I agree. In college at LSU, we also studied Columbus' ship logs during that semester. In it, Columbus wrote of being worshiped as a god upon arrival and the natives sacrificed HUMANS on the spot! However, Jesus asked The Father to forgive them because the people know not what they are doing. Indeed many missionaries were forfeited because the Judaeo-Christian principles were NOT instilled on the audience beforehand. One must keep in mind that the natives, WERE, and still are, to some extent, humanly sacrificial. The Spanish/Latino countries are, as we speak, the most dangerous places to live.

I read and reread this story numerous times. My take on the reason Espinosa was crucified was that the Gutre's viewed Espinosa as their own personal savior. The daughter had sinned by laying with Espinosa without the benefit of marriage and the only way to ensure that she would not be doomed to hell, they had to crucify their "Christ" so that she might be saved. Am I right or wrong with this interpritation?

Only, the Gutres had been working on (thus planning) the crucifiction before she lay with Espinosa.

I think the daughter was sent in, seeing as everything was planned in advance. The Gutres never asked about the event and instead continued with their "plan" the next morning.
