- Today I attended the Vintage Triumph Register (VTR) 2022 Convention Concours d'Elegance and People’s Choice Show in Galena, Illinois. Everything was in attendance from the Triumph TR2 to the Triumph Spitfire and the Triumph TR8.

Watching from the UK, it’s great see all these Triumphs in the USA. Great shame that the marque hasn’t survived.
Really knows the British sports cars, a pleasure to follow along reviewing this show.

I grew up with these cars in the 60s & 70s.
My first car was a 4 door Hillman Hunter 1725cc.
It was previously owned by the Metropolitan Police in London England where i still live today.
It was made in 1967 and i paid 100 GBP for it ,aged 17 .
I did not know the triumph sedans had front flip bonnets. I've learned something! Thank you, your an excellent guide and mechanic!
Nice show. It's amazing how many little British sports are still out there. Never had a TR6 but, probably my favorite
I love these old Triumph's, that Herald Estate was wonderful. The Vitesse was mostly the same one difference was twin headlights compared to one larger headlight in the Herald. I love the colour of some of those vehicles and the one with the stripes blennding in was very nice. I think they survive better in some parts of the USA due to the climate than they have here in the UK although there are still a good few around. Thanks for the tour Steve an excellent video. 👍 👍

Nice review of some lovely cars, looks like a great event.
Everyone is too quick to say that the Triumph V8 / slant 4 were terrible engines and the Stag should have had the Rover /.Buick V8 etc etc. Triumph were a capable self- contained operation and were earmarked for making modern sporting cars within the BL group as distinct from MG that just kept updating old designs with traditional styling and mechanicals. A new alloy OHC engine was very much the way to go, although there were the parallel ’BMC’ E-series and later ‘O’ series in development at other plants in BL. The Rover V8 production would have been at capacity anyway supplying the P5B, P6B, Range Rover, Land Rover and later the MGB. However it is likely that the MGB V8 was brought out due to the difficulties with the underdeveloped Stag engine..
The Triumph OHC engine was very effective for SAAB who adopted and developed it, unfortunately all Aluminium OHC were quite a new thing for the British car industry (and owners / mechanics / dealers), the Hillman Imp had similar problems although the 60s Rover P6 / 2000 design was very successful.

My last Triumph was a 74TR6 PI. Fast with injection but the engine was prone to tossing rear mains. Mine had a removable factory hard to and wire wheels. Prone to rust around the headlights.
This is a nice display and credit to the owners.

You did a great job videoing the VTR show. Thank you. I had a car in the event it was the TR3A showing off it's starting handle.
Preservation class means they have won in the concourse class several times and are now moved to the Preservation class where they have to compete to for points to retain their status. After a certain amount of time they can come back into the Concourse class. This gives other cars a chance to win.

Triumphs TRs are incredible classical beauty, the TR5 is maybe the definitive english spider, the Stag is my favorite despite the rollbar and the V8 triumph and not the Rover V8...
The Red herald near the end of the video was a Sport 6 newly restored.
Excellent camera work, loved how you pointed out the differences in many of the same models. Just something about some of those upholstery jobs that give me the feeling of comfort and elegance, ( the creams and the tans ), thanks for taking us along.

Thanks for sharing this video!! I'm a Triumph guy. First one I owned was a TR250 from 1971 to 1974. Then a TR6 I restored totally from 1984 to 2003. On this one I did bodywork and a lacquer paint job. And I rebuilt the engine...along with many other items, LOL! I did own 2 other TR250's with the intent of restoring one but foolishly sold (not knowing the cost increases to come!) both in 2002 ish. Two years ago I picked up two TR4's - one is really a parts car but it is in good enough shape to be restored. The good one is still awaiting my restoration. They are both registered as 1963's - solid rear axles. Cool stuff!
Thanks for the excellent video. My first car was an old 1959 TR-3. Floor boards were rusted out. Would not run during the winter in my hometown of Milwaukee. I swear...seeing the ones in red brought a tear to my eyes!! I'm sure there are others watching this video that are like me....I wish I would have kept the old TR-3!!!!!

No Triumph 2000 sedans? I had a 1966 with over drive. Back in the 90s. It was a great classic for the family.

Steve. You must have reawakened my interest in cars. I have just visited the most amazing show I have ever seen in my life. The Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court palace this weekend. Plenty on UA-cam about it. Literally billions of pounds worth of staggering cars . Have a look if you get time. Uk of course .
That's great and I hope somehow we can get more interest in shows like these. I will be displaying several cars in an upcoming concours so look for another show video soon.
I have a TR-6 in the mallard green that looks identical to the one near the end of the video.... Including the Monza quad exhaust and Michelin red line tyres.

Many thanks for this video. This brings back many memories as someone who resides in the UK. I had no idea that Triumph cars (particularly sports cars) were so popular in the USA.
My Mum had a Triumph Herald convertible in the 70's, but rust as ever took its toll.
May I ask if the the later Triumph saloons such as the 1300, Dolomites, etc. made it to the USA? My only Triumph was a 1300, which I loved - it had lots of "character" including the worst gearbox and vague steering. I was sad to sell it but I'll get over it one day.

The Herald station wagon and the Triumph Gloria were both registered in Cheshire, the county I live in! An amazing journey for both vehicles!

The small blue & white estate car is a Standard Companion, derived from the Standard 10 & 12 saloons. Standard Triumph replaced these cars with the Herald range in 1959.

That Model A is more than likely a Shay. Friend of mine had one. It had a 4 cylinder and an automatic.

Hi Steve, Just a comment on Preservation Class in the VTR. I have judged many times and am familar with the rules. Once you have entered your car and won your class in VTR concours, you can enter Senior class. After two wins you must enter Senior class. You must maintain 350 (out of 400) points to keep your Senior standing. After a few years in Senior class, you move to Preservation class. You must maintain 365 (out of 400) points. Neither of these, Senior or Preservation, classes mean that they cannot be restored. In fact most have. There has been talk of a Survivor class, which would be never restored, but have not seen it yet.
Do you know why they call it preservation class? In most Concours events that class is for totally original unrestored cars.
@@ThisWeekWithCars Sorry, the only thing I can think of is they are just trying to preserve the car. Once you have been in Preservation class for 4 years then you can go back to Stock and try to win your class again. Based on the scoring in regular concour judging, I don't think an unrestored car could win its class unless some one had an original that was never driven.
The reproduction Model A appears to be a 50th anniversary built by Ford using a Pinto 2.3 drivetrain and certain bits from Fox bodies.

Good to see an MG in the car park. Triumph sports cars command a very high price in New Zealand. Especially ones in good condition. Great video.

In the UK, Triumph was known as Standard Triumph in the Fifties, and their saloons (sedans) were usually branded as Standards while the sports cars were Triumphs. The little blue and white estate wagon is a Standard Companion, an estate version of the Standard Ten saloon. The few sedans that made it to the USA were usually branded as Triumphs. Here in Canada they used both names at times, and my parents first car was a 1954 left-hand-drive Standard Ten. I've been looking for one for about 20 years but there seem to be none left over here...

This was fun to watch, and see my TR4 called out for the interesting air dam :) A previous owner made several racing mods -- it has back bumperettes (or whatever you want to call them) as well and had a nice roll bar, but I removed the latter. At one point I thought I would put bumpers back on, but now I'm not sure!
mmmmm I posted a comment hours ago and it seems to have disappeared. Thanks for the memories, Steve, I'm and old Triumph guy, one 2000 and two 2500TCs. Great driving cars but some diabolical mechanical imperfections. Rear outer wheel bearings failed constantly, I used to carry a spare in the boot and twice changed one on the side of the road, clutches were never right, and the combined bell-housing/gearbox/overdrive weighed a ton on your chest while you were lying on your back on a cold concrete floor trying, yet again, to fix it. I never had one of their sports cars, but always wanted the TR5/TR2500, but with only 2,500 made, they cost a fortune these days ; there's one on sale here in Australia at the moment for $A105,000!!!
They built some great looking cars for sure just let down by some shonky engineering . A TR 6 and a 2500 estate are going in my dream garage when I win the lottery . Start doing the scratchies is my tip .
Stunning collection of Triumphs Steve, you probably have more in the USA than we do in the UK, yes, they should've put the Rover V8into the Stag as opposed to their own one which was prone to overheating, as was the TR7, and you're, right about the Vitesse.
Hi Steve. I'm restoring a very early TR6 with the fuel injection . And yes , that Herald Estate was mint ! Thanks Steve . My 6 has overdrive on 2nd ,3rd, and 4th. Not all TR4 A's had the I.R.S the North American market still liked the live axle .

Canada got a lot of neat stuff that we did not especially when it comes to French cars.
Didn't Dolomite's and Dolly Sprints get exported to the USA. There was none at this show. Great vid by the way. I am in the UK that is why I ask.
No I don’t think so I don’t think I have ever seen one in the US the older Vitesse was imported though.
8:48 they sure did (although most were sold as vans in Finland because of tax reasons)

Nicely done. 👍👍 I owned and restored a bunch of different Triumphs. Two of my favorites that were very rare in the US were a 2000 sedan with overdrive and a modified Sports 6 convertible. The Vitesse was sold in the US as a Sports 6 with a 1600cc six. The one I owned had the 2 liter six from a GT6 and overdrive. Sold them both in South Carolina in 1981. Wonder what became of them. Your video and narration are very good but you sure whizzed by the 6 cylinder Heralds/Vitesse/Sports 6. I'll have to search to see if someone else did a video on this show.
I think the English sports cars are the prettiest sports cars ever produced. Can you set them up with carbureted systems and tune them to produce as much power as the early fuel injection?
9:50 IIRC the Thunderbolt is the race version of the Tornado Tempest, made in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, England.
Little watching before bedtime
Did anyone explain Senior and Preservation to you? Senior class is for cars that have won class in concours twice. Senior cars have to maintain a score of 350 (of 400) points to stay in Senior, otherwise they revert to regular concours. Preservation class cars have been in Senior for at least one year and must maintain a score of 365 points to stay in Preservation. There are also Modified classes for cars that aren't strictly factory original. Hope this helps.
IMO that’s ridiculous. If you bring a better car you should win. If others don’t like it they should make their car better and VTR should be encouraging people to make their car better. Also Preservation class should be giving credit to completely original unrestored cars. A good unrestored car is a real gem and can’t be recreated.
@@ThisWeekWithCars the intent with Senior and Preservation is to get cars that win all the time out of the class so that someone else can win. After 4 cycles, a preservation class car can move back into concours at the owners option. All Senior and Preservation class cars come away with an award. It made more sense when there were a lot more cars on the field, and people came from a lot farther away to participate.
The light-colored TR2 at 16:40 in the video is a "long-door TR2." You couldn't open the door if you parked too close to a curb, so Triumph soon changed to a more conventional short-door TR2 with rocker panel beneath the door.
Kept looking to see if there were any dolomites or dolomite sprints, I know they weren't officially exported to the US but I wonder if there are any that have made there way over there.
Some but they are very rare.

I've always liked the TR2. My uncle used to have one and he went on cruises every weekend with it seemed like.
Yes it was named after the mineral that was mined there. It is the first place that had a rush to mine minerals in the United States.

Do you have any Idea of the name of the color on the green color on the small grille TR3? I really like that. Also, the mallard TR6 also appears to be nearly a shade of blue in certain light. A friend had a 1973. Mine is a Jasmine 1971 that I have owned since 1975. By the way, this was a great video.
Apple Green would be the factory color.

I have to ask, why did they not export the fuel injected engines to the US?
They had developed an emissions system with the Stromberg carbs and either didn’t have time or want to spend the money to get the petrol injection to pass the emissions test so the sold the US the less powerful carb version.

The Vitesse had a less rudimentary rear suspension than the Herald, with a proper 2-joint axle, rather than the simple swing axle. IIRC, the Vitesse setup was used in the GT-6, not sure about the Spitfire. The Vitesse also had a 4-headlamp set-up, whereas the Herald had 2.

Roadsters my friend, not convertables.
If its not really a roadster I refuse to call it that. If the top doesn't detach completely from the vehicle and stow away or be covered by a hard body door it is a convertible and not a roadster. A roadster does not have a visible top when the top is not up.
Some very nice cars in there. I think it was the TR7 that put the final nail in the coffin for Triumph, atrocious engine overheating - worse than the Stag - and very ugly body style, not really Triumphesque. For so many years Triumph was like the English BMW.......Thanks for showing us these cars Steve, very nice coverage.
I would say the TR8s made up for any inadequacies. A well developed car by 1980.
