    Loved this video! For a beginning sewer, you did a wonderful job. Just keep sewing. The experience will pay off. I've been sewing since I was 12 (I'm 57 now), and my first pattern was an Advance pattern for Barbie. This video made me want to get out my vintage Advance patterns and see what I can make. It's been a very long time since I have sewn anything from them.

    I also own this Sew-Easy Advance pattern (the actual vintage one), but I haven't been brave enough to make any of these. So... WELL DONE, Jazz Hands! You mentioned how tricky it was to make the collar work on one of the dresses. I use a collar trick for small dolls' collars. If you search my channel for my Lottie doll's yellow dress with black collar, you can see what my trick is to make the collars on small doll dresses look nice. Loved your review, and I agree that your wedding dress turned out quite nice! The red polka dot dress is lovely too. Hard to believe it's your first time sewing!

      Oh that’s great, that collar was awful for me. I actually had to make that dress like 4-6 times (I don’t remember how long and how many times it took now….) but I’m definitely going to check out your video. You should make the items from it! I’d love to see a professional do a great job with everything

    Hey Jazz Hands, haven’t seen you in a while and this video popped up today while I was on UA-cam. These patterns look hard but you made it seem easy. I like how you picked out fabric that had the retro vide in the correct “scale” hope things are going well for you.

    I made doll clothes when I was a little girl in the 70s and 80s. I learned to sew when I was 7. I started making doll clothes about 10.
    Practice makes perfect. I give you an A for effort. At least you can see the basic shape and form of your outfits. You will get the hang of it the more you do it.
    Get a fabric called tulle it really makes skirts puff. It is a mesh like fabric.

    Hi again, I have one more tip for your sewing pleasure :) I've been sewing doll clothes for years Barbie clothes included, I finally discovered a slick way to cut out patterns with minimal distortion. You need a rotary cutting mat and a 28mm (a little smaller than a quarter) rotarty cutter. Scissors lift fabric as you cut, using a rotary cutter keeps the fabric flat at all times. It sure has made an enormous improvement in my sewing. Hope this helps :)

    • @JazzHands
      @JazzHands  5 років тому +2

      Linda I might have to look into that! It would certainly make cutting satin a lot easier!

      Everyone is very self critical of their own work. I studied fashion design in University. I have a BA degree and I went on to design costumes for films and theatre. I’ve dressed movie stars illustrated for magazines and like you love the glamour of the early Barbie golden era from the late 50s and early to mid 60s and I have sewn countless costumes and pieces and I still criticise my work. But honestly the illustration on that pattern didn’t impress me of the wedding gown until I saw your gown. It was lovely. I also loved your color and fabric choices.

      It took a long time to do this set, lol. Make sure you check the 100 subscriber thank you video, I show off some Victorian styles I practiced with. It’ll be awhile before I sew again, I had to move my sewing into my closet while I paint minis.
      I’m thinking of doing #thestripeychallenge, which is done by Karolina Zebrowska’s UA-cam channel. I kind of want to do a Barbie Victorian striped dress, but haven’t decided if I want to commit yet. It’s a lot of work sewing the fashions!

    Boy, for someone who's never sewn before, you sure did an amazing job. I have been sewing for 52 years (although I only seriously got into Barbie clothes a couple of years ago) ...I had tried once before but the pattern was TERRIBLE -- which I didn't realise, I thought it was me, until I purchased OTHER patterns, which worked out well as I discovered that a decent pattern made a difference. Anyway I'm enjoying it now, and I'm really impressed with how well your clothes turned out!

    Great video!! You did a great job for your first time sewing. Satin is more difficult to sew. I love the cotton Bridal Gown! I wouldn't have thought it would turn out so pretty but it is!! That was a very clever idea! I may have to buy this pattern now & try it out too.I admire you taking on all of these different styles for your first time sewing. You really did a great job on all of them. I think I bought the same fabric as the one one you made with the collar. I bought it because it reminded me of the vintage On The Go Sheath. I love the brighter colors in that fabric. I think it looks really nice in the style you used to make it too. Lol, your cat is so cute!! I really loved this video, it makes me want to go sew now.

    I'm impressed! You did a great job! Really good idea to switch to white cotton fabric for the wedding dress, that satin fabric has a mind of it's own, even for the most accomplished sewers, one idea you can to is to get sheets of tissue (like wrapping tissue, $1 store), lay that down first, then lay your satin or slippery fabric on top of that and pin your pattern to fabric and tissue. The tissue keeps the fabric stable while cutting. Hope you keep sewing and sharing :)

    • @JazzHands
      @JazzHands  5 років тому +1

      Interesting, it keeps it from jumping around when you cut it? I need to try that. Besides doing my own vintage style designs, I like replicating the ones my grandmother made for my mom as they are “genuine 60s” (although I guess if I’m using vintage patterns mine count too!) but one of my favorite vintage ones my grandma did was a satin blue kimono. I will have to try tissue to see if I can get it to work, but don’t be surprised if you only see me working with cotton, lol. The one try I did with with satin was so frustrating!
      And yes, I will keep sewing and sharing! I want to do some Ken outfits next (one has an ascot, which is hilarious to me). I also have some skipper patterns I want to do, I love the idea of matching skipper and Barbie outfits!

    You did a very good sewing job especially for someone inexperienced. Small doll clothes are more challenging than human sized patterns. I wanted to chat a couple of things.
    Satin- Very difficult to sew for everyone. Here's a few tips Firstly and MOST importantly is your NEEDLE blunt, bent or incorrect needles will ruin your finish for sure. Get some for Fine material when using Satin or flimsy stuff like Organza. SLIPPERY FABRICS I've found if I use tissue paper or even lunch wrap paper under and on top of the fabric it helps as it tears away easily after the row it stitched up. Also try using a Walking Foot this grips the material under the sewing foot and feeds both layers simultaneously.
    STITCH LENGTH I reduce my stitches to 2.5 and smaller for Barbie's clothes especially for curves.

    • @JazzHands
      @JazzHands  5 років тому +1

      I don’t want to do satin again for a long time! It was very frustrating trying to make something in that material!
      Thank you! I tried very hard on all the outfits, it was fun reading vintage directions and doing it!

    • @edwinakastner8806
      @edwinakastner8806 5 років тому +1

      @@JazzHands Yes It's not easy. Are you aware that to stop fraying on such like material you quickly run a lighter over the cut edge as you do with a ribbon to get it to melt a little and seal the material. it needs a wee bit of practise first though :)

    • @JazzHands
      @JazzHands  5 років тому +1

      A lighter as in one for smoking? I definitely can’t do that right now, I’m so clumsy I would burn down my condo!

      This is making me want to sew more stuff but I don’t have the space for it lol. I have a dream to make all the patterns and UA-cam videos for them…but funds and especially the space are the hardest reasons I can’t do it.

    Nice work, is there a possibility to get these on PDF of JPG format?

      The only way to do that would probably be to download them as pdf and convert them to a jpeg. Also, congrats you are my 100th subscriber!!!

      @@JazzHands and do you know where I can download for free?

      I don’t know of anywhere you can download it for free unfortunately. Some other sellers have it for a cheaper price but might be missing the instructions or the quality of the scan is poor. Sorry I can’t help you with a free version!
