i was hysterical at the beginning when you talked about the issue of being called something other than your actual name. For 20 years I would answer the phone at work with "this is Chris" only to be called "Cliff". So my colleagues started to call me Cliff all in good fun. And I answered to that for years...... Great video as always!

In the 80's and 90's I worked at an independent shop. Sometimes we took on stuff we shouldn't have. But we usually got it fixed and charged a fair price. If we couldn't fix it, a small fee that didn't even cover my wages. I had a large number of people to contact for advice. In turn I grew to better fix things the next time.

hah I'm 24 years old and for my 20th birthday I bought myself a 04 c5z06 then a year later a 96 coupe and have loved corvettes ever since but someday I would love to work at a corvette repair facility instead of the dealership. That's why I love watching this channel gives me a little insight as to what its like at a "specialty" corvette shop which is SO COOL!

Thank you so much Lyle… I have been doing my research on buying a C6 or originally a C5, but pretty quickly ruled out the C5. I mainly and hopefully rightly made my mind up on buying a C6. During my initial research I found your C & S Corvettes and you (I think you are an awesome commentator). After viewing a number of buying guides I decided on a 2012 C6 convertible and found one at a dealership fairly close to me…it has some miles (which doesn’t scare me at all with the LS3) 92k to be precise, it was a trade in from an older couple who bought the car from them in 2012 and serviced the car at their Chevy dealership since they bought it and I have the service record including dextrose oil changes for its entire life as a one owner car. I’m in the process of picking it up as I just had knee replacement surgery 2 weeks ago and did the deal while I have been recovering! I pick it up this Saturday and I just wanted to thank you for your help in educating myself about my car… I have a 2016 2SS Camaro that is my forever car with 83k, so this car is actually going to be my daily driver as my current daily is a 2007 Chrysler minivan with 230,000k and I’ve paid my dues and I’m ready for my vette that I’ve dreamed of owning since I was in HS graduating in 74! So I plan on putting say 5k a year and fix everything on it as I go and like you said in one of your videos make sure you have the means to keep these special cars running. So, for $27k I got a nice clean car to drive every day and I look forward to your content and great podcasts… sincerely, John O’L in Champaign, IL not to far from Route 66

The trouble with going to a dealer for specialty work on an older Corvette is even if they have the shop manuals to cover the problem the manual's solution usually is to replace the part. Something that like in the case of a C4 AC programmer is not an option for the dealer because the part is no longer available and they may not have access to specialty catalogs where you might get one or have it rebuilt.

Lyle, I have a suggestion for a video for Vette owners like me. I do most of my own maintenance on my 1996 Corvette with 56K miles on it. I bought it with 31,000 miles 6 years ago. I am retired and know the C4 very well as a “shade tree” mechanic and have driven them over 300,000 miles combined.
Now to my suggestion for a video. I am planning an 8,000 mile trip in this car. What parts would you suggest replacing as a preventative measure for someone like me to make this car as reliable as possible. It has been inspected by a San Jose CA “Corvette only” repair shop and all known problems fixed or on a “watch list”.
From my knowledge of failure rates in C4s I would have the following on my list. My list to replace even if the part is working OK if the car must be reliable for long trips.

Serpentine belt 5 years or 30K miles. Buy the best belt you can find. Cheaper belts are not as strong and will slip if wet.
Water pump 50K miles or 15 years?? Mine failed at 56K miles and 28 years.
Power Steering pump. I changed out a new pump when I did the water pump. I have never had a failure in 300K miles driving the C4 but they are only around $70k for a good one. Easy to change with the water pump off.
Opti Spark 50K miles or ??years. The 95,and 96 are vented so not sure on these cars.
All vacuum lines that can be replaced.. plastic lines replaced with rubber on any C4 now.
Fuel pump just change it now on any C4 if it has never been changed.
Add an aftermarket TPMS Tire Pressure Sensor. They are under $100 and work great.
Consider changing to All Season Tires on next tire purchase.
    All coolant/heater hoses.....time change?
Lyle, I just had a fuel leak in my Fuel Pressure Regulator. I replaced it. Are there other parts like this that have a high failure rate on these 30-40 year old cars that should be replaced on a age schedule.
Thank you for sharing you knowledge on these “time machines”.

I bought my c6 gs from a dealership that sold my car new and did all the service on it. It was a 16 hr drive home. Halfway through the trip i started smelling gas. By the time i got home i had exceeded their return milage. The car was 4 months old outside the service bulletin cut off for the fuel pump and when we got the pump out it was clear the crack had been there a while. Then the local stealership wanted $250 for an oil change, twice the going rate at their shop for a mobile1 change. Never will a dealer touch me car

content like this is why I consider ol' "what's his name" my video corvette buddy. As for the question , the best I could do was sometime in the eighties.
From living in Texas, I know Gm made the best AC, and knowing that working AC is very important when selling a used car , that led me to consider a used GM product, instead of my usual imported something. I wound up with a corvette , but will be stewarding the platform, instead of selling it after a while, as originally planned.

what ended up being the problem on the 95 red vette. anti-theft. chip key ??? i rebuilt the engine in my 86 tuned port and the anti theft was a problem before it would start and run right it would start like in limp mode and throw the light on until we figured out what the anti theft unit was trying to override the car. stuff like this sucks hope you get it going i own a GS 2011 now. 95 vettes are fun cars.

    • @cscorvetteify
      @cscorvetteify  5 місяців тому +1

Oh, absolutely yes! The C7 we are pretty familiar with at this point, as we have them knocked apart regularly with torque tube rebuilds and whatnot. The deeper electronics issues are something that we are slowly getting into, but the 2015 and up cars require a newer (and very expensive) scan tool, so we are saving our pennies for that upgrade sometime this year. The C8 is so new that virtually everything (other than cosmetic upgrades, which we are doing already) is covered under the factory warranty. We cannot, in good faith, charge somebody to "learn" on their car when the dealer can and will do it for free. As these cars age, we will see them more frequently for repairs and then really dig into them. Lyle
