- Part II of the 45 minute interview with Morrissey for Earsay. Topics discussed: family, celibacy, fans, school, childhood, fame, loneliness, the third sex, Glastonbury Festival, religion and the plans for the Smiths' future. (7 July 1984)
"Nothing always seemed better than a false something"..he's spot on with that one. Fantastic interview; probably the most in-depth he's ever done.
Again a good tattoo ....❤️
"You say in other interviews that you're now celibate?"
"Mm"
"Is that true?"
"Yes, I'm afraid so. I don't have a certificate, but I can say that I am."
"Is that part of The Smiths mythology?"
"Not really because the other 3 members of the group are quite the reverse."
I love that he didn't say something crass or lacking in wit.
Morrissey is a genius.Been watching his interviews and he makes complete sense. How many of us are leading a life we really don't want to lead.Morrissey had the incite when he was young to see this and craft his own way forward that was true to himself.Really like the guy.Genius.
He's soo fascinating
love him
uracontra koenig that's so funny because he's every high schools gay kid honestly there's nothing incredibly special he's just on the extreme end of the spectrum.
He's really cool though it makes me sad I was ever mean to anyone although I realiZed at like age 22 everyone has something to offer.
kaisersoze508 “[..] every high-school’s gay kid [..]”
Morrissey can hardly be described as just ‘gay’. There’s also the dynamic of his high IQ to factor in, which homosexuality does not magically grant by default.
Not to put him onto some sort of unearned pedestal, but Morrissey happens to possess traits pertaining to creativity, introversion and high cognitive ability, all of which - relative to the wider population on average - are a rare combination in unison. It’s this mixture of traits that account for his ‘fascinating’ character type, at least in my view.
@@kaisersoze508 he is incredibly special for emerging unique and unyieldingly himself from such an intolerant environment
utter nonsense
I have to applaud Morrissery for his frank and yes, honest replies. A young man to be in a position to answer so quickly about sensitive personal topics. I wouldn't like to be in that position but many public people are.
"Because you've said you want children."
"Mm."
"Who would you want to be their mother?"
"I don't know. Me, perhaps!"
hehe
Nobody’s mentioning the part where the interview asks who would be the children’s mother and he says, “me perhaps.” ❤️
Yes. I imagine the reaction of the people back then
that was the cutest moment
Steven phrased 'feel-male' decades later.
It was cute and quite sad, now that he's still got 0 kids
What a great interview! (so far I've only seen this 2nd part). Morrissey seems to be such a reasonable and likeable guy - someone you would like to talk to for hours and have as a friend. He is very eloquent and seems to be very aware of who he is, what he stands for and his own strenghts and weaknesses/shortcomings. A very honest interview.
I can't help but cry enough to fill a swimming pool when he talks about wanting to have children.
same
Me too
Same! Although he never ended up having any children, to our knowledge, given that he seems to tightly control what he publically chooses to share
@@katelynncolburn9457 he wrote about it in his autobiography, he said he was in a relationship with a woman and at one point they discussed the possibility of having "a muelling cabbage" together
@@oscillatewildly6553 Yeah I read that, never finished the book entirely though. Lots of people like to say he is gay but I think it's obvious he's bisexual (I think he had a fixation on Linder Sterling at one point), it wouldn't surprise me if one day especially after he passes if someone tries to say they are his hidden child, but I think he ended up never having any, from what we know of him it wouldn't be like him to hide if he were a dad
this is honestly the most truthful interview he had ever done. what an amazing journalist. He was getting to the very depths of questions but not forcing them upon Moz. amazing.
Sounds like Melvyn Bragg interviewing
@@WesterddIt is Nicky Horne.
'There are times where I sit down and quite like the idea but there are other times where I stand up and I despise the idea' From his lyrics to his everyday language Morrissey is so gifted in the English language and can come up with so many clever and poetic phrases.
He got a personality crisis, he got it while it was hot 🔥
This interviewer is obsessed with Morrissey's sex life or lack thereof
aren't we all
The interviewer asks on behalf of the people.
No. It is private, he may still be a virgin for all you know.
@@emilybalcerak7861 No, English gutter press seeking headlines.
@@arricammarques1955 Lmfao it was a joke, homie
Totally get him .... After bad relationships one does shut down .... Love his pure honesty ...
So sad this interview. Iv been a huge fan of Moz for 20 years ago but only just come across this . So sad his self esteem was so low when he is so intelligent talented and attractive.
@@stevechristie2569 wow, what a nice gentleman we've got in here.
I know, and people say he's arrogant 🥲
Very genuine interview,i think he may have learned an important lesson after this one.Much more tight lipped now,and who can blame him.
Morrisseys youth is kinda like the modern day youth now. Locked away in their bedrooms and just thinking.
Large Latte he is more relatable now than he was then. people loved morrissey and yet the world STILL wasn’t ready for him
Isn’t that what a lot of youths do at some point, me included?
Yes except with 24/7 access to powerful technology, first generation ever to access this as children, for better and for worse
Except most dont think, just use technology for bad reasons. Certainly dont read or write like Morrisey did.
He once said he is ‘humasexual’. Very enigmatic man, I love that he managed to keep that part of himself a mystery in an very nosy profession
Considering there was a letter that he wrote saying both he and his partner at the time were both bisexual, he didn't really hide it well
@@pervenchemusicit’s well publicised that he’s had relationships with men and women. He’s not trying to hide anything himself.
Morrissey, you give the twenty-first century paranoid recluse hope.
"I frame them" gotta love that. I'm 25 now n would love to have met him at this age.seems such a lovely fellow.i'm sure he still is now but you know what I mean.
this doesn't relate to anything they've talked about during this interview but damn when he licks his lips and smiles at you with that shy, vulnerable smile ..... ❤️
bruv i got butterflies
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
"People never flock to the church for a positive reason" Incredibly Accurate
1984 and he was just 25. This is quite incredible really given the year and his age. He's quite frank. He's also quite wonderful. I totally get some of his views - relationships and children. An enormous amount of effort goes into making such things happen and then work.
Majority should never reproduce, frankly.
@@arricammarques1955 Absolutely this.
This charming man is Morrissey in this interview
Morrisey is a genius
God no. He's a pseudo intellectual - using it as a comfort blanket. People who've had traumatic childhoods often end up like that. It's the only potential weapon they have to defend themselves
Such projectile nonsense.
@@zeddeka his favorite band was NY Dolls and I assume his favorite dolls song is Personality Crisis
@@zeddeka he is intellectual, clearly and a genius in his own field of music.
Why do I love it so much when he says "whatever"? 🤔
its almost abundantly clear something really damaging happened in his childhood and he's carrying that, even today. I hope he finds some kind of resolve or inner peace. He is a unique story teller and artist
his entire school experience has been traumatising
I think he's just very introverted and sensitive tbh
I think he felt very different growing up he said as a child he was always reminded that he was Irish growing up, a lot of discrimination back then
Although pretty much everybody in England from Morrisseys generation has atleast one Irish parent
@@CrossleyThePauper all of the smiths have two Irish parents, same with oasis it's a bit different
“Perhaps too much thought, perhaps not caring enough”
It is a mindfield. No matter how you approach a relationship/love/etc. in some cases or for some people you never seem to hit the mark.
Aware of the frustration of life & relationships. Majority are ashamed to admit this publicly.
Even if I don't agree with all of his opinions, specifically the statements he made later in his life, I think there is a beauty in being able to look up and aspire to be like people we don't fully resemble in values or culture or whatever else in ways. I live a lot like he did as a teenager except I obsess over other topics besides writing like drawing or singing, and he gives me hope that a shut in like me someday can have hopes and dreams to become something.
Same, same... Like Morrisey i go for walks and then i write furiously.Maybe i spelled that last word wrong sorry 😅
I love everything about this human. He is so effing honest!
this makes so much sense
No I certeally didn’t ... whenever I went to cinemas I was always racing for the front seats I’m afraid... I was that boring...
I love how he loves to contradict the portraits that people have of him ahahah
Although given the right circumstances, hope arises?
happy birthday moz
4:12 I wouldn't expect an answer like that from him. He is so damn honest and true.
Usually a person will get more eloquent as they get older, with Morrissey it's the reverse. These days he repeats his words and uses sweeping hand gestures to try to get himself across, with very little of this effortless communication
People change as they get older
@@tammyb1544 read it again.
When you get as famous as Morrissey, you have to be defensive and protect yourself, especially with the psychotic media manufacturing falsehoods and lies about you all the time.
I like how he really is looking for answers.
He is appreciating the affections but he is in real pain that can't be soothed by trivial fan mail
To think he was just 25 when he did this interview…just seems so mature and well spoken for a guy of his age.
He means so much to me
Join the line and take a number, luv!
What interviews has he spoken about having children?
It's cute that such an articulate person would pronounce chasm that way.
I thought that! He’s read the word but not heard it said
He's right about Northern Ireland. When it comes to catholicism and protestantism there's a huge divide, and individuality is totally suppressed, and shame plays a big factor.
god save ulster
Just saw him Last week in Toronto same man just older his personality is the same
This interview is the most fantastic thing and the most original interview I ever seen. It is like psycotherapy. That is a fantastic idea, that is what most interests any fan of an artist.
0:12 P:P
What's really funny is that I was reading this interview when I was 10 ,that I still have. From 84
Love this man. Love his honesty and humility and his conviction.
#unhappybirthday
Never seen this before, although Ive followed the Smiths from the start. In this interview he really gives a lot about himself. And Ive never seen him being so open and really, so openly gay. Great interviewer.
I've been trying for awhile now to figure out what was up with the whole celibacy thing.
The more I hear him talk about it in these older interviews, the more I am convinced that something bad may have happened to him as a teen or young adult. Of course it could just be that he has been hurt and therefore doesn't have any interest in relationships but I'm afraid it seems more likely that he was molested, sadly
He was molested by his p.e. teacher, he revealed that in his autobiography... also read somewhere that he admitted to losing his virginity at 13/14, which is objectively really young, so it makes me think there's even more to the story than he's willing to tell :( i hope we're wrong about that though
@@beegirl851 Oh my God, this kind of clicks now. After looking into the background of “Reel Around the Fountain,” and themes of lost innocence and whatnot, this makes complete sense.
@@rattatouilletherat It's a theme of so many songs... also "Miserable Lie" and "I Keep Mine Hidden" ("I'm a twenty-digit combination to unlock with a past where to be touched meant to be mental" - as people who'd been molested often struggle with any kind of physical contact afterwards) kinda says a lot... I feel like these bad experiences as a teenager/young adult really affected him and it took him a great deal of time to figure it out ("Dear God Please Help Me"), how to enjoy sex & intimacy. Unfortunately, yet another thing I can relate to
@@beegirl851 when he lost V card was it girl or boy doesn't matter either way! Just highly curious

Wow, 8.17mins he describes non-binary before the phrase was coined. He was ahead of his time!
Non-binary may be a new word. The concept isn’t.
Hes the closest person to my own personality that ive ever seen or heard in my 57 years of living
When he spoke about celibacy, I find it rather sad that he said something happened he won’t repeat, which put him off thinking of sexual things. 😢

3:10 - 4:08 is the best part of this interview
Great interview. An honest bloke.
C.
I love him as anyone knows but he's a strange one. Most people don't quit having relationships (affairs, whatever) and become celibate just because they've "had a few bad experiences" 🤔
I’m sure it’s more common than you think.
has anyone here heard Morrissey talk recently about whether he has indeed steered clear of Catholicism over his life since this interview?
ALL religion is fictitious.
I had some nice dreams about Morrissey we get married.
"But who can tell?" :)
Is Morrissey still a virgin then? please no stupid answers. NOTHING wrong with being a virgin. EVERYONE is born a virgin.
He said early on that he had his first experience at 13 (waaaaay too young, even these days).

oh, how witty !
i think he's bisexual and a bit asexual
For someone who wrote furiously, you'd think they'd know some alternative phrases to "I wrote furiously," on the fourth or fifth occasion. Still love The Smiths though.
Never heard of Earsay, but my it is a proper interview, all grown up and meaningful. No, “What is your favourite flavour of ice cream” type questions.
It was a pop show on channel 4 i watched this back in 1984.

because he has no concept of what is within he takes things literally, he looks outside of himself and not within he takes life literally and very serious but you have to love his talent

I enjoyed the interview. I think this is the one where the interviewer persisted in trying to get an answer from a question. Bad dude. But listening to Morrissey talk about his personal life or thoughts on stuff is nice.
That's the interviewers job, to reveal Morrissey. He didn't succeed but he had a good go.
