This song is just phenomenal. Roberta s performance is just incredible as you touches my soul so deeply. I m really shaken after listening to her, remembering the ones gone and the others
This song, and her voice, wrecked me. No matter that times have changed and this "tragic" take on Sad Young Men is obsolete; if you have any humanity, this song will alway resonate.
My dear departed friend Fran Landesman wrote this beautiful poem, we had such fun over the years and Roberta recording this game her quite an income of course! It is a very beautiful song
Yeah, she had hits. And I do love the hits. But if you don't know this Roberta, then you don't know Roberta Flack. Her rendition of this song is perfect. Intimate, yearning, painful, resigned, true. When someone can take you into the pits of the human condition is a way that lifts the soul... profoundly human. I'm leaning to play/sing this, and I almost don't want to because it's very possible that I won't be able to get the release I've always gotten as a listener if I learn to deliver it as a performer. Oh well, that's the price of growth - A little innocence here, a little there... spent hoping for a little more depth, wisdom, and strength in vulnerability. Thank you, Roberta.
Mr. Freund, I hope you have learned the piece, it is worth spreading wherever you go. I daresay you could add pieces from Gil Scott-Heron, especially the song "Pieces of a Man". Powerful music needs to be heard to enlighten and aid us all.
A thrilling piece, her beauty, her exquisite performance matched with the wonderful musicians and that fabulous set. Oh yes and one of the loveliest songs ever.
Stand back in awe. The Mastress of her era is laying it down. This is as close to perfection as can be. Just one thing. Roberta, please open your eyes so we can see you.
Best advice don't listen to alan jackson Remember When After this... The holidays coming cowboy Better lay off that whiskey And let that cocaine be. Hahaha😅
@@edithcarter3554 you hot. Yeah. This roberta flack song is heavy She has another Vietnam song that i can't recall at the moment... These songs are kinda like Alan Jackson Remember When A cowboy tear jerker. Happy Valentines day Edith
@jeanlucchapelon Miss Thing, if you can't hear that there are violins on the original recording, that's between you and your ears. But don't come for me and mine.
Fantastic, loved this album since it came out. Does anyone know the bass player? I don't recognize him, he is playing the Ron Carter part beautifully. Also the drummer. thanks.
I'm not positive, but I believe it was 2/26/1970 from a television show on PBS called Soul. Here is the entire performance ua-cam.com/video/1d4bhrJew3w/v-deo.html
Yes, I love both versions too: because they are very different😢 Roberta's version is intimate and jazzy❤ Shirley's version is dramatic and loud and hysterical...but I love it😂
That will be great for a new generation, but this performance is etched in my heart just as you see it here. Cannot tell you how many highway miles I put down during working years on the road with Roberta Flack in the queue on my JVC cassette deck.
Just heard this on lillyhammer Steven van zandt thing on netflixs. His character looks stupid holding his lip in a sour scornful manner....and the ape like mechanic walk and body movements seem to be unrealistic. John Gotti didn't walk like that Anywho, beside those silly idiosyncrasies of his character, i have most certainly binge watch lillyhammer
Roberta, Roberta!!!! Singing the ode to sad young men…❤❤❤
Just beautiful, don’t you agree?
Absolutely beautiful.❤

I saw her sing this in the Royal Albert Hall so many years ago. We were all spellbound and silent. Brilliant
This is just devastating!!!! Roberta runs the gamut of human emotions here...
In rememberance of my brothers ( and transisters ) we lost in 80s/ 90s Australia ! 🙏🙏🙏🌈
One of favorite singers singing a great song in her prime!!
My dear departed friend Fran Landesman wrote this beautiful poem, we had such fun over the years and Roberta recording this game her quite an income of course! It is a very beautiful song
A very beautiful poem indeed!
Do I detect a hint of bitterness in your reminiscence?

I have learned it. Played it out once or twice - still needs some settling in!
This sounds even better than the album version!
WOW....!
A thrilling piece, her beauty, her exquisite performance matched with the wonderful musicians and that fabulous set. Oh yes and one of the loveliest songs ever.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I've searched for years for a live performance.
Me too!

Gorgeous, just as expected from Ms Flack. So different from the Shirley Bassey hit I grew up hearing. Both are wonderful.
I love this song.
❤❤❤ the emotion Ms Flack gets with her pristine delivery is unparalleled 🥰👍🙏🏼
1st Take was a stunner from end to end. One of my all-time favorite albums.
One of -my- all time -favourite- BEST album
Brought to tears to my face. Thank you. Have always enjoyed Roberta Flack...

absolutely fantastic! Roberta Flack, huge!!! Thanks for sharing.
Three best American singers ever in my opinion, Roberta Flack, Karen Carpenter and Barbra Streisand. My 3 favorites ever.
Can't argue w/being your all time 3 favourites, nor should I. But 3 best ever?
Why not (re-)visit Ella, Lady Day, Nina, Dinah, Joni, Aretha, Cassandra Wilson, Lady Gaga w/Tony Bennett, Diana Krall...
Donna Summer
Love them all 💋
She could sing other music than soul!
The real Queen of Soul - Ms Roberta Flack
Wow. So sad.
Even without the snare drum or violin, Roberta Flack is superb
Double bass …not violin 🙄
But with the imperial piano 👋
@jeanlucchapelon Miss Thing, if you can't hear that there are violins on the original recording, that's between you and your ears. But don't come for me and mine.
Grazie
Beautiful and timely
Breathtaking... Thank you.
Glorious.

Amazing! Someone simply serving the song. I just “listened” to this a couple of days ago for the first time. I’ve paid it no mind for decades.
Wow
quel moment !!!!!
Spiritually high.
...wow
Thank you for uploading this wonderful performance. Would you happen to know the date and place of this brilliant live rendition?

Lauryn Hill or Leon Bridges should cover this
