How To Oil Your IPE Deck

- Ok Brian. Here’s how we oil the IPE decking! A lot of do’s and don’ts covered in this. You want to make sure you use a low grit sand paper, Ipe is extremely dense so a fine grit won’t allow the grain to absorb the oil. Also water popping is redundant with ipe, it won’t hurt but it won’t help either. Make sure you use a liberal amount of oil but don’t allow puddles because it will become a sticky mess. Finally the most important step, do not leave your rags out in the sun, they will catch fire. Spontaneous combustion of rags is very real. I advise to turn your gloves inside out and place them in the used can with some extra water. Make sure to seal the can.

I've done my own ipe deck and I have a few recommendations. First, use dust collection when sanding. Ipe dust is nasty and toxic. I use an adapter to my sander and my shop vac loaded with a fllter bag and HEPA filters, and wear a mask. Second, I'm not sure I'd trust the glove method for the rags. I put them in water. Third, use more oil than you think you need and then let it sit for half an hour and wipe it up. It'll soak in better. It is recommended by Deckwise to roller it on and then wipe up. Fourth, wear throwaway clothes. You'll never get the smell out of the clothes without spreading it to whatever you wash them in. Put them in with the rags. And lastly, it'll take a lot longer than you think. Double your estimate, then add some more. I just put in an ipe tongue and groove porch and am planning on doing this in a few weeks. The construction left marks on it that aren't coming off with water, so I'm going to sand.
Hi great to the point video. Couple quick questions
- Shouldn't we be washing it after sanding? Or brooming it atleast prior to oiling so all those loose fibers aren't stuck to oil?
- 2nd one: my deck is 1yr old so it got sanded and oiled last yr, but i want to do more of a topup stain so looks like new again sincd several sections have a dull look now. Would you still say sanding is needed? Or can I wash, dry, and oil right after?

I have an IPE deck and we have been oiling it about every 2 years with Cabot Australian Timer Oil, the deck is probably about 20 years old. Historically we've just cleaned using soap and water then rinsing, let dry a day, then oil.However now we are now seeing spots which don't seem to hold the oil for very long (wear spots) - any recommendations or Tips? We were thinking of using a power washer this year to clean it- any thoughts?

Have a So American Tigerwood fence. Way more interesting than IPA. No American Distr is now recommending Marina deck oil. The hot, direct UV Sun rays fade the standard IPA oil pretty quickly.
Can’t even compare the two.
Ipe is way more dense on the Janka scale.
Like saying Zebrawood is more “interesting.”
Why because it has stripes? Is Purple Heart more interesting because it’s Purple? 😂
Ipe has other properties that makeit more desirable but the density is the main factor. It also machines nice.
Most oils won’t last on it. Ipe Oil will last a few months. Penofin is garbage, and Captains Varnish laid in stages with fine sanding looks the best and lasts the longest but it’s a complete nightmare to refinish when you need to..
Thanks for the tips, how do you preserve the wood that supports the decking underneath, is it important to make sure oil contact those in between the gaps, as same as the privacy fence? Tnx!
You can tape the joist before decking goes down. It’s pressure treated in this case and should last well over a decade. Alternative framing options are also a good move.
@@woodbullyltd thanks for your reply! I didn't know what joist tape was until you mentioned it! In my case I was making an outdoor table with joist like support underneath knowing it will be an issue with water trappings. I just used wood glue to cover the gaps for now, not the best solution. Great job! How do you deal with old ipe boards that are cupping
The best way to avoid it from happening is to oil the backs of the boards before install as well as seal the cut edges with a lumber wax.

When I used this product, I too added way too much oil and then it went really dark About six months later. I’m learning to use way less and wipe it off in about five minutes with a rag. Seems to be working better this time.
Hey, are you happy with the dickwise oil? My timber manufacturer recommended it for Tigerwood. Mine went really dark after a year. I think I may have just been applying too much and not wiping it off in time. My second time around it seems to look better. Just wondering if you recommend any other brands for Tigerwood that may be clear or more natural. Thank you.

What do you mean when you say “water pop” ?
He meant soaking the wood with water will raise the grain slightly. But not with Ipe so it’s a pointless step
How much would you expect it to cost to hire a professional to do the work for an Ipe back and front deck (Back is 15X15) Front Deck is 35X10.
How often should one do this (including sanding) thanks.
i wouldnt go under $3 a sq foot in my area but i think most guys charge 4-5, but theres always the jabroni that will do it for $1000

@@vids595yes, majority of decking oils now are water based. Quicker to dry and easier to clean up.

This video makes it look too easy. Trust me, its a TON of work, especially if you sand it. The most important part is wiping off the excess. Do not skimp on this part. If you're lucky, it will look like this for 6-9 months TOPS. - Wish I'd put down Trex as this is a yearly PITA.
the rich people love this and have tons of decks in ipe but never maintain them. if i do wash and clean them they never have me stain lol cheap bastards

There’s a massive spectrum of deck builders. Some good, most bad. Very few amazing.

Just so people know: putting the rags in a glove won't stop combustion. I guess it's good since they're not on top of each other. But seriously, spread them out and let them dry.

You can but the oil ads a rich look as well as helps stabilize the wood.

Or, use it and let it go natural. I love the lazy comment. I've been cleaning this deck twice per year for a decade and sealing it each spring. I was in a car wreck and screwed up my back and my knee. I am now 65. Nice Tie.@@doomslayerforever2858
Thing about it though is it’s all cosmetic. You can let it grey out and it will last just as well.
It will last about 6 months max, trust me. It’s beautiful right when you do it but it’s a pain in the. Asssss and needs to be redone at least twice a year. I’m regretting getting this wood
