Very useful vid. I use this one too. Great for ridgelines or clothes lines. Thanks for the video. You're right, there are a lot of vidoes showing knots, but people who watch your channel will appreciate that they can watch your outdoor videos, and then find some of the knots that you use without wandering around much.
Another great knot vid! Thanks. Although there are thousands of knot vids available, that is even more of a reason why we like to get your version and recommendations. We value your experience, interpretation, and opinion bro!
the truckers hitch is an amazing knot. thanks for a well instructed and produced process video. this is going to make a lot of peoples setup and take down more efficient and enjoyable.
I enjoy the knot videos. I've been camping/backpacking 20+ years and sailing for about 10 & knots are a basic required skill for both. Keep them coming.
Thank you for making this video, sir! This was how I learned how to tie a ridgeline before I got into camping/shelters/tarps/hammocks, and my life was changed because of it. Thank you!!!
several years ago i got my little bro a basic knott book and some 8mm kernmantle static climbing rope at xmas, but he thought it was silly. My other brother picked it up one day and got right into it,he tells me it has helped him somuch on the boat, camping,at work, etc, etc.Knotts are truley an essential wilderness/life skill that everyone should have a basic grasp on.cheers
Thank you very much. I was looking for an easy way to set up my ridge line and I just found it. I am going to use your system for my first overnight camping in the woods.
thank you for taking the time to explain the ridge line in such a way that beginners like me can understand...i have tried watching so many utube vids on this and was un able to complete this very important task. thanks again !!!
I first learned these knots from Ray Mears vid setting up a tarp and hammock. This works well with 1" webbing for a hammock as well. Thanks for close ups. Great vids
with my background i know many, many knots.i really think that schools should teach kids a few practical knotts bends and hitches, knowing some knotts sure makes life easier...a cluster of chinsy granny knots just dont cut it in most cases, glad to see you spreading some real handy knowledge
Thanks! That was the easiest version I've found so far. I'm taking my 11yo grandson out tomorrow to practice this and to play with knives and fire! Cheers!
***** Our adventure went well. After we got out tarp set up, we made a primitive fire (found material, and he got to spark the ferro rod!). Had some soup on his new stove and hot chocolate! He liked trying the knots almost as much as he did whittlin!
For those of you who do not know, the first knot was a Siberian hitch, the second one was a slipknot (you can also use a underhand knot)and the third one is a slipped knot or slipped half hitch (both second and third knots equal a trucker's pulley.) Terminology is very important.
Really nice of you to rake time to show us step by step instructions on how to do this knot. oh by thr way that what i usually get is a knot. so this something that will help me. Now to work in some practice time. i have to ask, how's yout lovely wife, the boys your one daughter and og coursr the twins. Hope everyone is in good health. Have a good day...
To tie it really tight, wrap it two times around the tree and through the loop. When you pull the string then, you have 1:3 pulley system, be careful you don't break rope. This is useful it you ever have to e.g hoist something heavy up a three or need to have a really tight line for passing a river by rope =)
Very clear!! How could I go about using the rest of the "working end" without pulling everything apart? What knot could be used to continue? For a clothes lines as an example?
Making a marlin spike hitch is much quicker and easier to connect one of the ends. All you need is a stick off the ground to use as the spike. Great video.
This is how I set up my ridge-line - an evenk hitch as an anchor then a slippery half-hitch to make the loop for a trucker's hitch. One thing I've changed is I now pass the running end from the tree through the slippery half-hitch loop once more so it doesn't loosen when I lock it off (in fact it holds pretty well even without locking - I just don't trust it to hold under stress so lock it anyway).
Never mind on the marlin spike hitch. I was getting it mixed up with something else. If you hang a hammock with some webbing, the marlin spike hitch is a-maz-ing. It is great because it is a no knot knot. That made sense right? Anyway, again, thanks for the vid.
Well done, good teaching. I use the same knots for my ridgeline too. Learned how to tie a better backup slip knot, thank you. One thing I do differently is use a prusik permanently on the trucker's hitch end of the ridgeline. It doubles as a handle and hasn't failed me yet as a leverage loop. In addition, I would prefer the prusik fail in high wind or snow rather than the tarp. skwatupu
I just used these for my tarp ridgeline last weekend and everything worked great, except that I kept loosing tension on the line when securing the truckers hitch. I'm sure it was something I was doing wrong, everything else worked like a charm.
So I tie the anchor knot in the middle of end my line and it just pulls out when I pull on the working end as shown, Then I put the working end around the tree and pull on it to tighten the ridgeline. So I am pulling on the working end which would release the anchor knot I just tide!! Please explain how this is going to hold? Also the anchor knot being a slip the loop I made just slips closed and the thing comes undone completely or it becomes imposable to get undone and the pocket knife comes out.
If I understand you question correctly: 1st - make sure when you tie the loop, the working end is the one with the bite that goes through the loop. This does make a difference 2nd - make sure to wrap the working end around the tree and then through the loop before synching the line. Hope that helps.
another great informative vid.just like PrpePro2117 said don't have to search much, Trout made this all possible,no doubt. LOL. Happy Trails From Canada
To finish off the Ridge Line, there is yet another "Hitch" you can try, it is easier too. Its called the "Truckee Hitch". Check it out, you eliminate the step of tying the first loop in the line by using a Twisting Loop instead! I used it all the time to secure Palettes of Tile to my truck..works great.
Ive seen other videos using other knots and idk why.. this one is simple, siberian knot on one end, tie a slipnot with a bight and use it as a trucker hitch then secure with a half hitch with bight.
Jimmy Johansson that will happen when you pull the incorrect side of the rope through the loop. Experiment with the loop. Sometimes I forget and pull the wrong side of rope through and it does the same thing. When that happens, reverse the process so the loop is formed to pull the other side of the rope through. Hope that helps.
How bout using a alpine butterfly knot I like that it is easy to untie and it is very strong with out stressing or lowering the breaking strength of the rope or line just a suggestion
HI Crocket. I just ordered me a new Dream Hammock. I slept on my friend's Dream Hammock and it was very very nice. my plan to buy me a tent this year has been postponed indefinitely. Crocket, do you think that using 550 as a ridge line is a good idea? as you know, it does loosen up... What do you think will be better alternatives? Thanks for the vid.
LOL I've done that too ending up watching a video and thinking, "how did I get here?" I use this for a lot of things such as my ridgeline to put my tarp over when backpacking and securing items in the back of a truck when moving as a couple of examples. It's a great versatile setup.
In the spirit of always improving, you might want to check out a knot called "quick release" for the tree, maybe a little faster and simpler than demo. And there is a version of truckers hitch called automatic truckers hitch that is just amazing. Thanks for sharing.
Great! Thanks! I thought it was a Ribz pack, but any time I mention them to people, they never know what I'm talking about, so I thought Ribz might have merely been a figment of my imagination lol. How do you like the pack? Do you find that it helps to balance you/your backpack out better and distribute the weight of your gear better? And thanks for the response, by the way :D
Love it. For me it's not about the balance but about the convenience of having all the important items within reach. If you like to wear a knife on the belt it can sometimes compete with that though.
OP youtube search "automatic trucker hitch" it's an awesome way to tighten a trucker hitch without pinching off the tension and tying a half hitch. You essentially run the tag end througj the loop twice. Of course you can finish it with a half hitch with a bight to make it more secure
Cool video but not really a knot I would use. For me if I need to string a line between trees like that I would just use a prusik knot and a taught line hitch. Although it is good to have options. Perhaps I will try this and just keep it stored away in my memory bank just encase.
I think the ridge line is more the 'camp craft' application of a truckers hitch. There's quite a few subtle variations on the whole taut line thing.A ridge line tends to support something (like a tarp) vs a hitch tends to tie and secure something down. Quite a few other YT vids around refer to both ridge lines & truckers hitch in the same context
Very useful vid. I use this one too. Great for ridgelines or clothes lines. Thanks for the video. Very good video. I love seeing family out together especially when you are teaching me new tricks...
Excellent camera work on these knots. Detailed demonstration
Thank you for making this video, sir! This was how I learned how to tie a ridgeline before I got into camping/shelters/tarps/hammocks, and my life was changed because of it. Thank you!!!
Glad it has been a positive experience for you.

My new ridge line method for tarp and hammock camping. Thanks Crocket!! This is just what the doctor ordered.
Best demo I've seen of the Siberian Hitch and Trucker's Hitch yet Crockett, the very knots I prefer. Great job.
Thank you very much. I was looking for an easy way to set up my ridge line and I just found it. I am going to use your system for my first overnight camping in the woods.
Very cool. Have fun and enjoy.
Thanks for the vid. These ridgeline knots are going to help alot with my hammock camping.

Paul DeMaria Glad it was of use. Thanks for watching.
I first learned these knots from Ray Mears vid setting up a tarp and hammock. This works well with 1" webbing for a hammock as well. Thanks for close ups. Great vids
I have always used a double half hitch for this. What you are doing looks more secure, and easier to untie. I will have to try it.
with my background i know many, many knots.i really think that schools should teach kids a few practical knotts bends and hitches, knowing some knotts sure makes life easier...a cluster of chinsy granny knots just dont cut it in most cases, glad to see you spreading some real handy knowledge

Great video! - I am a complete noob when it comes to the outdoors and showing stuff like this is very helpful!
Excellent method and a great demo Brother. Love the quick and easy take-down of this setup.
Love this series of videos...very helpful. This one in particular came into play last weekend on our first overnight camping trip of the year. Thanks!
Great simple video! I'm glad you posted this! It's always good to refresh your knots! Thank You.
Great job. This is my favourite Ridgeline video. I used it last year with a tarp, and it was bombproof in the rain. Cheers!
This is what i use when i go out , you have done one of the best video's on how to do it though great job it not easy showing knots lol .
That freakin rocks.. knots are something I need to get out and practice doing.
Thanks for the great video
Thanks Crocket. This vid was very timely for my upcoming trip.
Thanks! I’ll never forget this one!
Nothing like a knotty video before bed. I'll be asleep in no time.
Awesome! I just started backpacking and bushcrafting. This will help me set up camp for sure. Plus I love knots, being a fisher girl :)
ThePamber Right on. Enjoy your time.
Thanks for sharing! I will have to watch again @ home w/some paracord to practice these...maybe hang some laundry in the backyard!
I love these knot videos! Great information! Keep them coming please.
Siberian hitch & a trucker's hitch use them too my friend. Great to see trout out with you! Good of him to let you you shoot a quick how-to vid : )
I have seen this before on youtube but never very plain, yours was very easy to see and follow .
Thanks
Great close-ups on the knots. Many videos skip this essential step.
I'm headed outside to practice. Thanks!
Really nice of you to rake time to show us step by step instructions on how to do this knot. oh by thr way that what i usually get is a knot. so this something that will help me. Thank you,,,Good job demonstrating those knots. Big help since I am new to hammock camping. Appreciate it!
Great job Trout on the cam!
I love your instructions on knot-tying - instrumental as batonning!
What is the cord material made from? Thanks for taking the time to demonstrate the ridgeline.
This is a must save video for me! Thanks for the teachings!
thanks for posting this the yellow line is the best for demonstration purposes.
Very clear!! How could I go about using the rest of the "working end" without pulling everything apart? What knot could be used to continue? For a clothes lines as an example?
One of the best ridge line videos because of the ego-cam position.
Great vid, I use your first knot and a quick release taught line hitch for the second knot. Thanks for the knot brother.
Making a marlin spike hitch is much quicker and easier to connect one of the ends. All you need is a stick off the ground to use as the spike. Great video.
Great vid. Best explanation I've seen. Though you only mentioned the gentlemen, we ladies appreciate this sort of thing too. :)
Harry Houdini lol, too much sleight of hand for my meager skills but at least you've given us a reference. Much appreciated.
Easiest demonstration to follow, Thank you.
Perfect vid, great explanation and easy concept, just what I was looking for to make my life a little easier, thanks!
Yes, excellent mate, you made this look simple for me,cheers.
From alabama and we always called that a chicken knot. Same idea just different regional name. Take care.
Put the working end through the loop TWICE and when you tighten it up it should lock, making it easier to put in the slip knot.
Added to my knots and rope playlist. Thanks.
Great work Trout!
Thanks! Good hd close ups.
What's the name of the second knot you used to tighten the ridgeline?
Great video. Thanks so much for sharing

Great video! Such a huge help man
Well done, good teaching. I use the same knots for my ridgeline too. Learned how to tie a better backup slip knot, thank you.

love it, will have to practice and review it from time to time - one of the benefits of UA-cam!
Great video man! This was EXACTLY what i needed
another great informative vid.just like PrpePro2117 said don't have to search much, Trout made this all possible,no doubt. LOL.

To finish off the Ridge Line, there is yet another "Hitch" you can try, it is easier too. Its called the "Truckee Hitch". When was this
your videos are one of the best i have seen, please do one on constrictor knot also try showing more videos on different types of knots
Is that just regular 550 cord
that was an excellent demo, easy to understand and view, thanks!
Can you use this to hang a hammock? Is it secure enough to put your weight on it?
I would not use this to hang the hammock.
Ive seen other videos using other knots and idk why.. this one is simple, siberian knot on one end, tie a slipnot with a bight and use it as a trucker hitch then secure with a half hitch with bight.
..."and that, gentlemen..." and Ladies! :) Joking. Great tutorial. Thank you so much!
haha, i thought the same thing. :) some of us ladies are into camping as well. thanks for the tutorial @Cr0ket20.
Great setup but it doesn't work for me. The loop closes in on the rope when tightening the ridgeline. What am I doing wrong?
Jimmy Johansson that will happen when you pull the incorrect side of the rope through the loop. Experiment with the loop. Sometimes I forget and pull the wrong side of rope through and it does the same thing. When that happens, reverse the process so the loop is formed to pull the other side of the rope through. Great tutorial Thats my way of doing a ridgeline
how do you hang a tarp with this? don't you have to tie the tarp to the ridge line and make it taut somehow?
+GrandPixel prusik knots. I have a vid out there somewhere about it if interested.
Thanks for the vid.
baseballman74 That's mainly what I use is 550. Have also used bank line. both work well but for that particular use I prefer the 550.
I use that first one alot, I was taught it as the siberian hitch
Thank you.! This will help a ton!!
the knot video's rock!
don't know how I got here.. now I'm curious to know wha is this for, or for what it can be used?
LOL I've done that too ending up watching a video and thinking, "how did I get here?" I use this for a lot of things such as my ridgeline to put my tarp over when backpacking and securing items in the back of a truck when moving as a couple of examples. It's a great versatile setup.

Good job.
Just followed this for the first time in my backyard. If it falls, I know who to blame 😀
What's the name of the chest pack you're wearing, and where did you get it?
Ribz Front pack. I got mine straight from Ribz. Google it and you should be able to find multiple different places.
Great! Thanks! I thought it was a Ribz pack, but any time I mention them to people, they never know what I'm talking about, so I thought Ribz might have merely been a figment of my imagination lol.

Cr0cket20 I also have the Ribz pack. I love it!
Hey buddy what best rope diameter for ridge line
I have always used paracord and it has worked great for me. Not sure what the exact diameter is on it though.
The tautness can't be compared. The way he shows outclasses your system. Try it yourself
Pretty dern good, the best . 👍🏻
Great stuff many thanks.
Great tutorial!!!!!!

Correct. It is his youtube name.
