It's amazing how overcoming the addiction of buying more plants gives you space and frees your mind to really weigh what you have. Then you learn what truly brings you joy and what is better suited for someone else or different conditions. I'm currently going through this. 💚

Very true, I think lots of us are currently dealing with decluttering our life’s, cloths, make up items. I definitely became a plant hoarder in 2020 during the pandemic. It’s been feeling great letting it go.

I propagate plants and give them to a coworkers wife…she’s a teacher and she’s got a “plant club” at school with students. So she shows her kids all about the root system, watering etc. I also have given some of my unwanted plants to coworkers. They appreciate it and I know they will take care of it. I give them a little handmade “care card” so they know how to care for it. I have never given a pest ridden plant to someone, that’s tabu.

I've told myself it's ok to let plants go whatever the reason, be it:
    Fallen out of love
    Pests
    Want a bigger nicer plant
    Make more room or
Lower time spent on it or lower stress etc
Im doing something similar since my job has got really busy, and there are other plants i want more or try out. With home plants and collecting being a hobby if we didnt declutter, re-prioritise and review i think we could potentially lose the joy of plant parenting
I also co-plant similar plants. Great idea and tips!

Eliminating duplicate plants will work. I have a large pot of ten different Sansevierias. It’s absolutely gorgeous. I have a pot full of 12 Syngoniums. OO they drink a lot of water but is Gorgeous 🪴I just keep my favorites. I downsized to 30. It’s workable. But I still looks at other plants, plant swaps.

Great video! Even as a new collector with just ~50, I have already figured out my ADHD brain has got to love that plant, or I will not care for it. Swapping and selling on FB Marketplace here in the US is the best way to reach people for sure! I've been clearing out a bunch of space this winter, on a plant ban until June, because after your most recent video at ECUAGENERA, I realized I too will be in that area for a family reunion. And I can return with plants? Oh no...

I feel like once I do begin to declutter-which will have to be just before I move in a year or so-I already know who’s staying and who’s getting out.😅
    1. All hoya will stay. Hoya just bring me so much joy.
    2. All anthurium will stay. I only have maybe 6, and they are so resilient.😅
    3. All succulents/cacti will stay because I made the mistake of getting rid of them before my last move and I have regretted since.
    4. All scindapsus, pothos, and trailing philos will stay-they’re just too easy keep around and style.
Monstera, large Philos, syngonium, calathea, and other odds and ends will be getting culled or coming with me in the form of top cuts.
Thanks for the video! It’s nice to see other perspectives and thought processes on how one might declutter one’s plants.

I wasn’t home for 9 months and my mom took care of my plants, so it felt like I didn’t have plants in that time at all. Now I’m back and while I still love my plants I got rid of that annoying addiction of constantly wanting more plants. When plants create stress rather than joy, or just don't bring much joy anymore.... I totally agree with you downsizing. As I watched this video I decided to throw away 3 plants that I just discovered were riddled with spider mite and I had cut back to stumps and now, 2 days later as I'm watching this, I'm realizing that I didn't even enjoy these plants when they were healthy.... So happy to hear this, Emma! I've got my collection down to about 70 in my home. But have a few props and about 5 of those 70 ready for the next plant swap as they aren't "love" plants. Making space for indoor plant show in March and happy with my much easier care routine without having to constantly buy more plant stuff monthly (from grow lights to soil amendments to pots). Less pests too with contained number of plants, so that's a plus ❤!

  • @MaybeTiberius

putting multiple plants together is really a huge thing for me at the moment. every spot in my home gets so valuable with space and also lighting. also plant pots can be a real big limiting factor and reducing the space your pots need without reducing the plants itself is just such a huge thing. do i really need 3 pots of 3 epipremnum, taking up lighting space? well no. i could just take a stem of each of them and put them all 3 together on one mosspole and forget about it. it looks more interesting and unique and it greatly reduces the work i have
and i m allways wondering how people can even manage that many plants. for me i found like 50-70 plants be the sweetspot. it kind of easily managable. having like 200 would require it to be a full time job basicly. especially since i have everything in semi hydro and need to flush the pots every lets say 2-3 weeks, running to my bathtub with 200 plants one by one every 2-3 weeks would be completly insane.

I do not have high cost plants. My most expensive plant is a Squamiferum that my son paid $50.00 for @ Walnart. Most of my plants r from the clearance rack @ Walmart & Lowe's. But bringing my plants back from the brink of death tends 2 make me love them more bcuz of the touch & go, life & death dance we do until they r healthy & thriving again.
But I have begun 2 understand that part of it is Pride. Pride @ having saved that plant cuz once it's doing well & doesn't need me hovering over it anymore then I tend 2 move on 2 the next plant rescue I find. My plants don't suffer from neglect but they don't bring me the same joy they did when they were struggling 2 live. I hope this makes sense.
I love my plants & the idea of getting rid of them makes me hyperventilate. But I can propagate my plants & pass them on 2 a good home or 2 someone who is interested but unsure what they'r doing & want someone 2 help advise them as 2 what the best beginning plants r, what 2 do with the plant they get, etc...
    Do I have a problem?
    My hubby says; YES!
    I say; Maybe?
I'll figure it out, such is the life of a nurturer.

Downsizing is a great idea to beat plant burnout! So many to water and pest control becomes harder. I have gone to the point of not chemically treating pests anymore. Hosing down leaves and putting them outside in spring to let natural predators do their thing seems to work . if not, they get composted. Certainly get rid of plants that don't 'spark joy'.

OMG you were out of breath almost the entire video. So I can see decluttering and purging those plants that don’t bring you joy would be a good thing. I did this about a month ago. I sold a few of my plants on Facebook. You might want to ask your plant community, if anyone wants to take that particular plant off your hands. There is a peaceful feeling when you re- home a plant, vs. trashing it. Good for you and 🤞🏽 best of luck. Hopefully when you’ve eliminated a few, you can take a deep breath and breathe again. 🥰

Great tips Emma...will start downsizing very soon as we slowly approach autumn here in Sydney so that I can really stay on top of my 'love' plants such as my Alocasia & Calathea collections as well as my philos. I REALLY want to keep them and be able to give them more attention. I felt relieved when my Brandti died on me ( I went away for 4 weeks and so....) and I don't feel the urge to replace it now. So hopefully that feeling, along with my plant ban, makes me feel pretty confident that it's doable 👏🏼💪 Thank you for this practical video 😻

My hubby is the principal and started a program called Winning Wednesday where the kids have 3 hour long classes (a half day) for extra help or experience classes. “Plant Party” is an experience class where we learn about types of plants, learn to make different types of soil, pot up cuttings, root cuttings, propagate by division. We do “open pot surgery” which is rehabbing plants for teachers/staff. We go to a local green house for a tour. In addition to potting up cuttings and divisions we make Airplant displays and mason jar terrariums. I think the kids love it. I’ve had many return. And we also do a teacher raffle at the end of each cycle of classes (to give away my prototypes).
