wow, that was a kickass storm! rare to see nearly continuous cloud to ground strikes like that. do you get storms of that magnitude with any frequency in that area? nice video!
Sadly no, that why there has been a lack of videos on the channel lately. Its not because I stopped making videos, there just haven't been any storms worth recording and publishing.
a most impressive storm. both to watch and listen to. an energetic thunderstorm ? yes indeed! an impressive lightning display absolutely!!! is it a severe thunder storm? most likely not. why not? It lacks the three criteria, listed by the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE. What are the three criteria used by the NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE to catagorize a thunder storm as a nominal severe thunderstorm? A: WIND: is the wind blowing at 58 mph or faster? the storm is considered to be severe B: HAIL: is the hail 1 inch in diameter or greater? the storm is considered severe C: TORNADOES is the thunderstorm is producing a tornado? the storm is considered to be severe . Why these three features? because ANY one of these three features has the potential to cause EXTENSIVE PROPERTY DAMAGE, OR PERSONAL INJURY. i am sad to say frequent lightning and heavy rain do not constitute a severe thunderstorm a strong one ? yes an intense one? yes. a powerful one? yes. a severe one unless the storm exhibited one of the features I mentioned , high winds . large hail or tornadic activity, then I have to say ,,,no you sir did an excellent job of recording an INTENSE thunderstorm KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! ONE BEAUTIFUL JOB!!!!!!!
Thanks for the comment :) I just title them as they are defined by the NWS, so if I titled this video Severe, then they must have issued a SVR for it over my area. I can't find the warning history, but I did find this document. If you search for Columbia County, and "Copake", that was probably the area towards where I was pointing. www.weather.gov/media/aly/Past_Events/2016/Aug_13_2016_LSR.pdf -RH
