Destiny is way older. People needed either traces of ancient DNA or required gene therapy in order to access the systems on Atlantis. Nicholas Rush pointed out that Destiny predated that and no gene therapy was required. Not to mention Destiny had an older Stargate on board.
The Seeder ships (which planted Stargates on planets) were older still. Destiny caught up to one of them in season 2.

Earth before they could have time to beam off. Eli was going to revive them and in doing so learn that they were not suppose to have been on the ship. They were suppose to have beamed off when the crew for the Destiny boarded but it never happened. Instead they placed themselves in stasis until the other ancients could gate aboard and take over but it never happened. The protogates alone mean that either one of two things happened:
1: Destiny is actually over 50 MILLION years old, because of the dated ice around the Antarctic gate.
2: Either the plague that ultimately killed Ayiana (the frozen lady near the Antarctic gate) or some other disaster was so bad ancient society degenerated technologically and had to "reinvent" a lot of stuff, leading to Destiny still having maybe been older than Atlantis, but not quite predating the OG milky way gates.

London's 2 thousand years old but there's very little left from its start.
Everything in Atlantis got rebuilt and updated right up until the time they abandoned it.

They state it in the show a few times. Atlantis launch from earth was approx 3 million ago, the milky way gates were said to be around 50 million yrs old and Destiny was said to have been older than that. So, at the very least Destiny is 50 million years old, likely a bit older as the gates Destiny uses are older and less advanced. I don't think they discuss the time issues of the ship using FTL that isn't hyperspace, it physically travels that fast in real space, it should be experiencing extreme time dilation as ftl would be considered relativistic speeds? But they mess all that up with the comm stones and ke3p8mg I'm contact with earth

They were going 99.9% the speed of light if I remember correctly, and that was with sublight engines. I wish SG universe would return and flesh all that out a bit. @@silenttitan416I don't recall anyone saying that the Milky Way gates were anywhere near that old. In my mind, I imagine that the Ancients had routine plans for maintenance of the gate network in a well-settled and mostly peaceful galaxy like ours. Whenever they developed new improvements to the basic gate design, they would plan and schedule a galaxy-wide upgrade of all stargates. We never saw the Ancients when they dominated the Milky Way, before the Goa'uld became a threat, but if we could see them, their civilization reined over the galaxy for millions of years, the population probably numbered in many billions and they had millions of ships capable of crossing the galaxy. For them, replacing all gates in the galaxy every 10,000 or 20,000 years would be easy.

Sure, but this is Rush talking. Even if he wasn't manipulating or outright lying, he could simply be wrong. Humans in SG always only had fragments of knowledge of the ancients. He puts the pieces together, and with his star-system-sized ego claims final answers. There's plenty of contradictions in dialogue - don't get too attached to things people say, especially when they aren't particularly trustworthy, are known for at least "short-cutting" answers and are way too impressed with themselves. Now, if they actually found records and talked about those, we would have some stronger evidence. It's certainly possible Rush was referencing those, but we don't know. And even with explicit records, we don't know if they were interpreted correctly, if they were faulty (due to human/ancient error or data corruption over time, for example), or heck, maybe it was just a sci-fi novel some ancient guy was writing :)
Not to mention that technology just doesn't work that way. Even if you know the gene lock was used in Pegasus, and wasn't used in Milky Way (which is already _very_ tricky to establish, especially when you consider that there were at least two migrations of ancients, not to mention the whole Dakara superweapon thing!), that doesn't mean it was a novel technology, or that you should expect it was automatically used everywhere once it was developed. It was used on Atlantis for a reason - that same reason wasn't necessarily at play for Destiny, and each technology also has drawbacks. According to most of the information we have, the Ancients were _really_ ancient, so they were very different from our current (and ridiculously short, compared to the Ancients' development) high-tech race. Technology isn't a progression from worse to better; everything has benefits and costs.

I've been watching your interviews lately, & they were great! It was cool to hear some of the stories from the sets.
As for this video, I just wanted to mention my thoughts on a couple things...
The way I understood the Ida/Othala thing is that the Asgard lived in the Ida galaxy, but they had to leave because of the replicators. Thats when they went to Othala, but I believe that's a planet, not a galaxy. I don't recall anything about a different galaxy, but I will look for a reference next watch though...I literally watch it every day, I'm currently in S4. I keep it running at home just because it's like comfort food for my mind. Plus I put it on when I sleep, so, yeah, I watch Stargate ALOT! ...My wife is sick of it! Lol.
The other thing I was gonna mention was the thing about the germans with the dhd. I remember in the ep '1969', Daniel pretends to be related to a german scientist that worked with the dhd...I'm guessing that's where the background in 'Origins' came from. There may be a reference in the episode 'The Torment of Tantalus,' but I don't recall anything specific.
I hope this doesn't come off as "I'm right/you're wrong," I just wanted to discuss my favorite show...🤘😁
Keep up the great vids, & keep spinning that dial...Puppet General Hammond wants it to spin! 🤪

So my opinion when it comes down to the perspective of why they didn't use and Milky Way gate on the destiny was because that design was added much much later on.
My assumption is the SGU Gates were originally in the Milky when they were first created, and mostly used for testing until they were perfected enough to send on the seeding mission.
At some point in time they were dismantled for the newer more improved versions to take their place, however these new additions would have taken place long after the Destiny was sent on its mission.
Understand in the lore yes the ancient Alteran who creates the Stargates designs on a piece of paper that he was drawing, but it's entirely possible that was one of the many designs he had in mind.
However I will admit the gate that's on board destiny is far more advanced than all the others that were added along the path that the destiny has taken. So far it's the only gate of its design that can withstand a 9 Chevron wormhole.
And it's my assumption that back on Earth where the ancient Alteran first built these Stargates, started to advance the design of the Stargate after sending destiny on its mission and eventually came up with a better working Stargate, which is when they started replacing all the old ones that were in the Milky Way with the new design.

Considering how much help those would've been built into the gate pedestal it's reasonable to think Destiny was from before ring transporters came along, so probably older than Atlantis no matter how much the city changed.

The technology on Destiny looks older than Atlantis. The look of Destiny is so much more robust, it has a feel of say NASA Apollo, compared to NASA Space Shuttle being more akin to Atlantis. Also the gates that Destiny uses to connect to on the planets are only needed to be short range and of limited function. Since they are manufactured on an automated assembly line on an automated ship, they may be designed to be as simple as possible. In fact it would be suprising if they weren't meant to be as simple as can be, since complexity brings problems that could be avoided.

On the other hand it also means that its easier for "less worthy" beings to access the network wheter or not they have access to a DHD. But that wasn't the reason why they removed this feature from the pegasus gates. Simply put the previous generations were more mechanical. More moving parts mean more things that could end up broken (SG-1 Season 2: The Fifth Race, SG-1 Season-8: Zero Hour).

I think the question of whether Destiny is older than Atlantis is out of place, it's clear that it is. The more important question is whether is older Destiny or the Antarctic Stargate, which is supposedly 50 million years old. At first glance, it looks like it's the Antarctic Stargate, since Destiny's Stargates have a shorter range and are less durable, but that may be due to the nature of Destiny's task, where the Stargates were basically just for resupply, so were basically just disposable. And they were built automatically to save as much energy as possible in production, needed to fly and make many more Stargates at the same time, so they also have a shorter range. And no need to travel across the galaxy for resupply, and maybe don't even have location updates because the Seed ship "seeded" Stargates a few centuries or decades before Destiny's flyby, so due to the movement of the stars, it's not even possible for them to have a longer range. So I'd say Destiny is no older than 50 million years, maybe it wouldn't even last that long in a functioning state. Destiny is probably much newer than Antarctic Stargate, but still older than Atlantis.

Most people don’t understand how purpose built Destiny is compared to other known ships even Atlantis! It has several technologies specifically designed for it’s mission and extreme long term use. It’s FTL system is FTL but not Hyperspace specifically, so it can scan for the signatures in CMBR that show intelligent design. They had to have some form of super advance/sarcophagus technology built into Destiny, since 50 million years later it still hasn’t collected all the data it needs. The energy collection of the ship was done via stars, because either ZPM’s were not created then or were not viable for production on ship. The gates on the ship are the earliest prototype of stargates known with limit range and function. From the Ori movie, we know Amil who created the Ark of Truth, was the one to also design the first prototype of the gates, this happen back in Alteran original home galaxy! We also see far more design similarities between the Alteran ship that was used to leave their original home galaxy and Destiny compared to any other Lantean technology. We know the Alteran settled first on Dakara when they arrived in Avalon (Milky Way) so the Destiny Project must’ve happened not far off then since it was launched from Earth but no remains or mentions of it existed. Fun fact is whether Alterans were around on Earth when the dinosaurs extinction happened? Also the Alterans gave up on Destiny project because it would have taken million upon millions of years to discover their answers, which is what prompted their society to look for alternatives which was ascension, this came directly from their search for the intelligent design in CMBR, it won’t surprise me if they did discover traces of it on their travel from original home galaxy to Avalon since it was so far away hyperspace travel was deemed too slow to be viable travel form!

Most of the search results I find for how old the Destiny is only say it launched "over 50 million years ago." One video by The Gate Guy talking about whether or not the Destiny gate could dial gates on the seed ships says the seed ships (tho I don't recall if he cited a source) were launched about 2000 years before the Destiny herself. One video by Generation Films about the Destiny talks about the confusion over the age of the ship and cites (tho I can't find the entry) Joseph Mallozzi's "blog" where he states that "the 60 million year figure is correct and thus predates the gates in the milky way galaxy." Other than thinking 60 was a typo and that he meant 50, this seems right to me given that the Destiny predates the Ancient Gene security protocol and has the v1 gate if you think of the SG-1 gate as v2 and the Atlantis gate as v3. The 1 million year figure provided by the comic "Back to Destiny" seems counter to established lore given that the Ancients fled the Milky Way 5-10 million years ago and didn't come back until 10,000 years ago.

We know that Atlantis was launched from Earth "several million years ago", but we know nothing about the Ancients' maintenance and upgrades to the city-ship during the several million years they spent in Pegasus. It could very easily be that, as durable and long-lived as their technology is, maybe the Ancients undertook a formal rebuilding of the city every 100,000 years or so. Look up the "Ship Of Thesus". Maybe the Atlantis we saw submerged 10,000 years ago had no parts in common with the city that initially brought the Ancients to Pegasus. It could have been rebuilt several times over, and the current Atlantis could be far less than a million years old. We also know that the Pegasus Ancients built at least one other city ship while in Pegasus. It may be that they built a whole fleet of them in Pegasus (before the Wraith first became a serious threat, I would assume) and incorporated a few minor pieces of older city-ships into the build of the newer models, like reusing seasoned ship timber for sentimental reasons in the keel or planks of a new wooden ship.
As for Destiny, in the episode "Aftermath", the one where the shuttle crashed, the ship's AI (in the guise of Dr. Franklin) told Rush that the ship spent "over a million years" in flight. Sadly, no exact age was given. This estimate of "over a million years" fits perfectly with the passage of time in the show's two seasons. It took Destiny several months to finish crossing the Nakai's galaxy, then an unspecified period of possibly months to cross the void to the galaxy of Novus.

To be honest it's probably best to consider the comics and books as non cannon if they come up against evidence in cannon disproving them. Or in this case the word of a show runner. It's also pretty obvious that the destiny is older that both the milky way gate system and Atlantis. The gate is inferior, the chair is inferior, and most importantly the destiny has a light speed drive while Atlantis has an obviously superior and faster intergalactic hyper drive.

@@matyasofinvention6304 It's not that obvious to me. City ships and the gate system have been very obviously upgraded over the course of their existence.
I can imagine Atlantis being as old as destiny, but ship-of-theseus style, where literally everything on atlantis was replaced by upgrades.
The pegasus gate system is known to be seeded by destiny's vanguard of seed ships. In fact, it's known to be the very first one. It was obviously upgraded afterwards.
The reason why destiny doesn't use hyperdrive is because it can't due to the nature of its mission. We know this was a deliberate choice, because ancients had intergalactic hyperdrives at that point (we know this, because the Ori have them too).

@@matyasofinvention6304 It is also possible that Destiny's gates are not an older design than milkyway's.
It may be the case they are deliberately simplified to make it possible to build them quickly using easily accessible resources. Notice the seed ships need to progress at least as fast as destiny.
How the hell would they find large enough deposits of naquadah to churn out milkyway-type stargates quickly enough?
You might counter-argue that Destiny's gate is also that simple design for no apparent reason, but we don't know if that's true. It's clearly capable of dialing earth. The thing that limits its rage when connecting to nearby planets seems to be the simple design of the gates it is connecting to.

The reason being is that it doesn't seem realistic. How could a civilization remember its own history for that long, let alone something not wipe it out or it not wipe itself out? If the ancients had been around for a little over a million years, Destiny was 900,000 and Atlantis was say 500,000 years old...that just seems more plausible to me rather than they left the Ori galaxy 50 million years previous and the gate system is millions of years old. Could it be some issue of difference in time passage due to gravitationally induced time dilation? I know it seems like while standing on the deck of the Destiny you'd go off of it's local, absolute time for age, and the same while at Atlantis, but couldn't the Destiny be hundreds of thousands of years old in it's local temporal reference frame, but older than Atlantis by Atlantis' temporal reference frame? I know this effect has been proven by our astronauts, specifically with one twin who is now slightly younger than the other. If this is the case we might even be able to establish specific ages of Atlantis and Destiny that correlate to Destiny's distance from it's launch point.

Yeh... I think you care too much about not being wrong by telling "canon evolves" instead of "retcon".
Stargate is my fav sci-fi show. But the the flaws of coherency were always here, without disguising behind "canon evolves" quote. Even if canon do evolves as fact, doesn't mean you can put this everytime to justify flaws in writing or mistakes with lines of dialogues.
Here, with all the content of SGU and other shows, we can definitely put things together. Like, Ancient seat command is older on the Destiny than on Atlantis, so it means Destiny is older in conception / launch.
    Things like that.
But there is also those other things, being problematic or anachronistic, and never explained. In the facts, canon evolving is the best trick used by writers to justify their mistakes. Nothing wrong with that when it's still "logical" or accurate trough explanation. But sometimes, it's a bit easy.
Like, during 8 years, you had this idea / concept ascended beings are by definition pure hearted and without malice. Then you have the brain using x% capacity to evolve. Then you have ascended beings able to ascend others non ascended beings. Then you have... The Oris.
Or the stargates deposited by ships to stake out Destiny's path: why Milky Way doesn't have it? Destiny departure was Earth. Does it mean, Destiny crossed all the Milky way without having any planet to reach? If stargates from SGU are older, and Ancients colonized Milky Way with models we saw in SG1, it means they colonized Milky Way BEFORE launching Destiny, because Destiny USE stargate concept. And they spread stargates ARRIVING in the Milky Way. You can't send a ship with a Stargate inside able to connect with other stargates if you don't have the concept of stargates ongoing since long time. Or it's like sending a ship with a smartphone inside before smartphone was created. So why models are older and limited in reach in SGU? Or more, why the system of gates in the Milky Way is the same since the network was created, but the ones from Destiny are older in design and reach, when it must have been created after the current design found in the Milky Way? Technically, the door inside Destiny's ship must have been created based on the model you found on the Milky Way, because, you can't lauch a ship with a stargate inside, able to connect with other stargates, without having stargate devices created. Also, the fact Destiny has remote to activate stargates, and there is no DHD.
    Again:
    - You have a stargate inside Destiny
    - Destiny was launched from Earth
    - Destiny's stargate must connect to other stargates to let people come in
    - Stargates use whormholes
    - Stargate are deposited by Seed ships for Destiny's path
    - Seed ships are launched BEFORE Destiny's launch
    - Stargates were created BEFORE Seed ships were launched
    - Stargates were spread in the Milky Way BEFORE Destiny's departure
... But stargate inside Destiny or the ones from the Seed ships are "older" from the current model from Milky Way.
... But current model in the Milky Way is the same since its creation based on so many dialogues from SG1, SGA.
If they launched Destiny and Seed ships BEFORE creating stargates, how Seed ships can provide a path of stargates for Destiny?
If they launched Destiny and Seed ships AFTER creating stargates, how stargates deposited by Seed ships are older than Milky Way stargates?
You see the problem or anachronism, or i start again?
You have a tech described as older than any tech saw in the franchise from Ancients, the one in SGU, launched AFTER the current tech we saw in SG1, the gates, or it would have mean they launched Destiny with a stargate inside before developing stargate, in would have not make any sense at all, specially considering the main concept is the 9th chevron as a fixed address to reach Destiny wherever it's located in the universe.
Gates are older than Destiny if you considerate Ancients started to colonize Milky Way before launching Destiny, but Destiny's gate is older than their development in the Milky Way.
    ...
Or the gene of the Ancients to activate devices: they told trough Atlantis series, it was a way to prevent Wraiths to use their technology. But in the facts, Atlantis was launched from earth, and the seat founded in Antarctic, that is older than the departure of the Ancients from Milky way to Pegasus, is activated trough the gene only. It's pure anachronism.
Or the inconsistency of how to activate the supergate. Because, if i remember correctly, the amount of energy was basically tremendous, black hole only way, however, Ark of truth, go & back, not really a problem.
Or the supergate itself: the size of the elements. First, each part came out from a stargate, so, what is the diameter again, 3m? Then you see each element is way bigger than a ship not able to go trough the stargate...
Or the gates in SGU: how do they have power & energy to work again, without DHD? Those gates only work trough Destiny handle controller to activate. How do they activate between them? It was established trough years of episodes in SG1 that the DHD provides the power, or any kind of power can sources the gate, but still, this need power to activate. Sometimes the other gate provide the power, but in SGU, gates are alimented by?
I mean, at some point, they focused too much on "don't minding details", when it was the cement of why Stargate was great: the lore, to the point the lore itself changed for one episode, then changed again, or else.
Like communications in subspace or during hyperspace or else. One time it's impossible to contact a ship in hyperspace, other time they have Landry doing a speech on 3 screens directly from earth when they are currently on hyperspace...
Or in SGU, one time Destiny's shield protects from any kind of energy blast because of frequency, but if you specify the right frequency, the shield is stronger against weapons using this frequency, however, they can do kamikaze impact. but... They go INSIDE a sun, sun is also matter, not only energy. So, a drone can do kamikaze damage, but sun "physical" impacts don't do damages?
But when you're in hyperspace, you can't use the shields (Asgard tech at least). Demonstrated with how they exploded a ship on hyperspace to counter replicators and destroy them by self-destruct of the ship to explode them on hyperspace.
Or Destiny's shield again, with FTL: they told Destiny don't use hyperspace travel, and remain in the current "dimension" it is, so obviously the shield is activated when it is on FTL, but they don't suffer problems of time relativity or else. But if you watch this episode of SGA, they encounter an Aurora battle ship full of Ancients who traveled without using hyperspace remaining in same dimension but with speed close to light, definitely being affected by relativity, because they departed from Atlantis 10000 years ago, then still only a few weeks? days?... Past for them?
So what, the FTL device from Destiny has this "bubble hyperspace explanation". Ok. But what is this bubble? Hyperspace use another dimension "road". So, Destiny use... What? A "bubble road"? Still on same dimension but using bubble which isn't same dimension by definition?
I loved all this ideas about different ways to travel. But some of them really are too much full of inconsistency.
Well, whatever. Still my best favorite sci-fi franchise.

Logically, Destiny is older as it was the one that "seeded the gate system" in general. Meaning it had to travel further and do more traveling through a galaxy to seed the gates.
PLUS, Atlantis was considered the "crowning achievement" for the Ancients, and either the "actual" last city or at least one OF the last cities founded. So, not as old, but actually more advanced.
Also: 100s of 1000's CAN BE Millions. And since Rush would have NO MEANS to determine HOW MANY 100's of 1000's, it is easily capable of being 3million while Atlantis is 2million. Not to mention the possibility of "rounding numbers" so that 2.5 would be rounded UP to 3, but 2.4 would be rounded DOWN to simply 2.

Think of it like, a helicopter or plane is just a plane UNTIL it picks up the President. ONLY then does it get the classification Marine One or Air Force One. So it wasn't Destiny, some other designation would hold the prior launch date, until it reached the other universe.

This pertains to Stargate in general with how things work.
I thought it was always convenient they only had one bar of power left on the ZPM. I always thought it made better sense for the ZPMs to power much smaller vehicles than something as large as Atlantis. Something like the shield generators on the Children of the Corn planet made perfect sense.
Something as large as Atlantis or any other large facility should be able to tap directly into subspace to access Zero Point Energy (ZPE) and use just like turning on a light switch instead of having to use ZPM/batteries. The Ancients were pretty smart and were able to manufacture ZPMs so why not connect directly to the source or at least find the ZPM manufacturing/charging facility on Atlantis, it's probably in the same location as the one on the Replicator Atlantis.
I noticed the offworld gates weren't connected to a power source other than the Power Crystal in the DHD and that connection to the gate was wireless. I'm assuming there's a highly advanced Tesla Coil type wireless electrical connection going on here. It would also make better sense if the DHD was some kind of Tesla Coil that harnessed either the planet's natural electrical field or the ZPE in subspace, again no need for the Power Crystal.
I can see the ZPM and Power Crystal as plot devices to limit stories but in actuality they're a redundancy or power cells for smaller vehicles and devices.

When this happens there is no way to maintain containment since the fundamental principle of the universe in that localized area don't apply anymore and as a result the power system becomes unstable and explodes.

i get the feeling that Atlantis did have something like this aboard the city. because you have to remember that the city of the ship was never fully discovered. we only explored a small portion of the city in all seasons of the show, just like that hidden laboratory for janis that had all kinds of advanced tech that were useful, it's just as possible the ship had many other things found within the city that the atlantians were working on or even common place, the ZPM's could have had a charger that was safe and could be used on the ship, compared to that outpost that mkay destroyed that part of the Galaxy with.
mkay was a brilliant scientist but he was dumb because of his arrogance and over confidence that got him into trouble in situations that could have been avoided had he paced himself and researched everything with risk factors in mind. funny enough many of the atlantians had this same kind of Hubris which often got them killed because they were too confident that they would always win because of how smart they were.
if you remember an episode where they find an aurora class ship that's traveling in FTL and they stop it and find out that real life atlantians are aboard the ship, well in this episode the expedition get kicked out of Atlantis because it belongs to the atlantians and the atlantians decide they have all they need to destroy the replicators. because of a plan they set in motion 10,000 years ago within their base code to never attack their creators.
they bet the rest of their lives on that stupid idea that the replicators would never figure it out, so they had no other plans or back up plans just in case things didn't go as planned. like maybe Thor's race was right, they need someone dumber than they are, to figure out how to approach certain decisions in how to defeat an enemy such as the replicators.
suddenly regular humans are playing 4d chess and the atlantians and Asgard are playing 2d chess because their superiority in knowledge it's almost like they don't think of contingency plans when they approach an conflict of any kind.

i liked the power extracted from the stars idea that destiny had more than the ZPM tech. like don't get me wrong it was cool that they condensed that power in a much smaller container and that it could run the ship. but they could just as well done the same thing with the power from the stars only much more efficient and hold more power than the tech on the destiny.
and what does every Galaxy have plenty of? stars of course, so they had plenty of gas stations in space, and if they wanted to they could make some kind of automated system where they take a small puddle jumper with the ZPM containers integrated into the ship in such a way for it to fly into the chronosphere of the star to extract as much power as needed and take it back home to Atlantis or something like this. or maybe they built a base of operations near the star to collect power but also use the star as an unlimited source of ammo as the destiny had with the use of it's energy weapons as long as they had plenty of fuel in the tank. and use the star to protect themselves against any who might attack them.
or just convert a few puddle jumpers into an massive automated flying power house that would charge within the sun and return to Atlantis as if they were like an usb that provided power plugging into the city's grid.
i think this sounds kind of cool to be honest. and i wouldn't put this kind of tech idea behind them, have you noticed we haven't seen any of the alteran's second advancements of tech besides the second stargates within the milky way Galaxy, we know that the gould stole their tech, but the gould also designed much of their tech to reflect gould as a species separated from the alterans tech.
other than the gate system's and the ring platforms within the milky way galaxy and maybe that download knowledge device they used and also that cube that healed ppl's bodies that the gould reverse engineered into their sarcophagus and the weapon on dakara, i think there might have been some alteran tech that Anubis reverse engineered to use but i'm not sure that tech was indeed the alteran's tech, but we never see any of their space ships or weapons, unless the zat gun and the staff weapon are also based off of alteran tech. but again, no space ships within our galaxy that are alteran tech related exist that we know of.
it's almost like they skipped a generation of flying in space and only sent out the automated seed ships within the milky way galaxy to seed planets with stargates. or maybe they did indeed have space ships, but used them all against the wraith or some other foe that we have yet to know about.
