I agree this show was brilliant. I loved all the little sub stories, the 6 degrees of separation, the challenges and discoveries they made. Then the battles with the aliens and ships. Also the way Rush and Young pull together, but clearly still don't trust each other.... it had me hooked. I do miss it.

The moment the Destiny dropped out of FTL in the opening scene I knew I was going to love the show. I know it was a darker version of Stargate but so was the original movie. I hope Destiny gets some sort of real closure beyond a mention in a possible future Stargate show.

Actually, I comment (and rave!) about the SGU soundtrack quite often... It is so good! It was definitely Joel Goldsmith's masterpiece (RIP).
There was so much more variation on many levels. The instrumentation was much more expanded from the traditional orchestral score to include sounds from rock, pop, electronica and, of course, ethnic instruments. The melodies and chord progressive had so much depth and were so emotive.
      Absolutely stunning!
But I definitely agree with you that it gets overlooked and not given nearly enough credit!

i absolutely 100% agree with you! also, something baffling happened in my life watching it: my partner wasn’t really aware nor keen on the other SG series because of life circumstances &, if he did happen to catch a random episode, he was lost/wasn’t pulled in.. so several years passed & told him a new SG series was premiering.. he sat down, watched it together, & he was immediately hooked.. he’s also 17ish years older than me, (i was 34 when it premiered).. so it wasn’t a demographic difference, esp since we both dig sci-fi.. so there WAS something unique in its chemistry as its own series, & yes, we were both equally upset that it was cancelled, leaving so many unanswered questions.. all that, to me, means there was something special about it that separated it from the others.. that should be a clue into its uniquity.. thanks for posting this!

My favorite of all the Stargate shows. I loved the flawed characters and the constant tension. Eli was a brilliant character who brought the viewer into the show. Rush fascinated me. Young's depression seemed honestly and realistically depicted. I loved the first season's slow pacing since the pressure and constant crises ratcheted up the stress. I think that it was clearly created to be the darker BSG version of the show, but I truly think it succeeded. I've rewatched the two seasons repeatedly and was drawn in each time.

It was a terrific show, but sadly it gets compared to Galactica because of the more muted colors and the handheld camera style used. And the latter two was just a visual style common on plenty of shows at the time and than Galactica itself had not introduced to television (24 had made it a staple years earlier).
Beyond that the shows were pretty different: Galactica was nihilistic and melodramatic for the sake of being both, while SGU was more grounded and actually hopeful amid the challenges the crew faced.

It was brilliant once it got rolling. It had so many things I was looking forward to seeing resolved and Rush was an amazing character who could cause real drama in an empty room. @@AnneEloiseOfCNY I disagree. I was a power-issue, not a shop full of vibranium replicators. I don't think the writers would have been shitty enough to go for deus-ex-machina when they'd already went to so much trouble to stay plausible within the logic of the universe. Since we know that an incoming 9-chevron wormhole with pull Destiny out of hyperspace, they could have made an 'Easy' option by just having Eli contact Earth through the Stones and inform them of the full situation and requirements; then a few weeks/months later Stargate Command finds some way of getting the power to dial to Destiny and sends a small team with stuff to fix the problem, or at least a bunch of tools and resources and a few super-brainy people who like a risky mission.
Carter, McKay and Eli would make a fun combination.
There's also the option of turning around, finding an appropriate star, and doing that funky 'going forward in time a few hours and stealing the parts/equipment you need to fix your ship - from your own ship!' solution, if they wanted a high-risk option.

I honestly thought SG:U had potential but was stifled by bad promotions, being shifted around in time slots, not having SG:A as a leadup, and the writers strike didn't do it any favors. SG-U also had more severe roadblocks such as MGM going bankrupt, Direct to DVD market imploding, and the cord-cutter movement starting to ramp up.
What many of the haters seem to forget, SG-1 & SG-A both had growing pains with Actors/Actresses & writers, but were given more time to grow into the powerhouses they are now.

Just my opinion, I think we/I was so desperate for SGA to continue that we wanted SGU to be good. SG1 and SGA had comic relief. SGU had none. Life is depressing enough without watching it take over your favorite show. No disrespect to the producer and writers. This is not easy to do. But I think there were two reasons it failed:
    1) the lack of humour when compared to sg1 and sga
    2) back then people were much more into explosive tvs shows with battles, pure excitement, sgu had very little of this.
I think you're right in saying if it came out now it would be more popular then it was back then

When I first saw SGU I didn't know how to digest this new series. That maybe because I had familiarised myself with SG-1 and SG-Atlantis and had gotten used to their way of storytelling (template). I enjoyed SG-1 and SGA. They had the standard approach of giving us this one or two episodic storylines within which an entire plot was condensed and the tale was complete. And a lot of their stories carried the plot element of pulling impossible escapes (i.e. Deus ex machina plot devices) through the cleverness of Rodney or Sam or through the help of some advanced alien race (Tokra, Asguard, Nox, Tollan, etc). Most of those episodes had a clear enemy marked out as well (i.e. Gould or Replicators or Wraith). But when I got into SGU I realised this one was different and in an odd way better.
The enemy here is not some alien race but rather the main enemy is oneself (in a manner of speaking) and the question was whether one was able to overcome the odds to survive in a seemingly hopeless situation. Can one overcome the general distrust among strangers and transcend the politics of petty humans to instead work together to ensure one's survival? The show is dark but I think that's what makes it interesting. You don't realise how good SGU is until the end of the first season when the show really begins to unravel and go deeper and we get a sense of the desperateness of the many characters and the reason for their conduct. What makes SGU special is that it feels very real - like I sense it could happen in the real world (rather than a fictional setting) where the most random set of civilians somehow board an advanced alien vessel by accident and get trapped in its journey and destiny.
I understand not everyone who is a fan of SGA and SG1 is going to like SGU (and that is okay) but personally I felt it was the best in the Stargate Series. A truly underappreciated gem. I was disappointed to realise there would be no more seasons or no conclusion to the show apart from those few comic book extensions. I heard that many who are fans of Battlestar Gallactica would appreciate SGU - I think there is some truth in that.

I didn't make it very far with SGU. The military guys were complete buttholes in the first few episodes; I had military friends who were disgusted with their behavior. And I quickly tired of the "smart guy who's an arrogant SOB" thing (as if we'd never seen that theme before). Then there's the whole thing of "here's a spaceship with the power to travel at immense speed through the cosmos but somehow can't spare power for a few lights in the hallways". My final episode was the one where Destiny was nearly out of power and headed for the nearest star. Mind you, that's the only possible source of external power around, but the idiots on board kept trying to stop the ship from getting there. I was screaming at them through the whole episode; all the supposed intelligent people on board had the collective IQ of a tomato plant. That was it; I started calling it the "Ship of Fools" and I quit.
Now if by "ahead of its time" you mean "has a production company that can't afford its electric bill so it films everything with the lights off" as with so many other shows and movies today, I'll grant you that.

They went for a kind of a "Star Trek Voyager" type of show. A single ship alone in a distant part of the universe. It was decently executed, unlike voyager. Limited resources (air, water, power, food), we actually see the ship get more banged up as the time goes on. This is the first stargate where we actually see a ship taking fuel. Other ships used to run on magic (the Prometheus being the most egregious example). They even have a plausible air filtration mechanism, instead of some unspecified "life support".
Gates are pretty good. Limitations make sense.
One thing that I think they messed up was the communication stones. There was no need for that. The frequent communication with Earth detracts form their predicament.
I disagree that they didn't have bad guys. They did, except that, by definition, they can't remain the bad guys for long. So it's kind of a monster of the week deal. It's fine.
It's a bummer that we didn't see Destiny's mission even close to being complete. It was a data gathering mission, some outstanding insights about the universe could be transmitted back to Earth - one day, when they figure out how to power the gate.

Stargate Universe first year was very confusing and slow. What I thought the show was to do was to show who were the 4-6 main characters, as each episode progressed, lessons would be learned and a "team" would form. The trusted 4 -6. Stargate SG-1 had this. Stargate Atlantis had this. Stargate Universe seemed to be going in this direction, and then they'd throw a wedge, and throw who I thought would be the solid 4-6 out of whack. This is what confused me. I thought Eli and Rush would seem to always butt heads, but in the end, they would bond together, which this seemed to come and go. This confused me. Also several other characters seemed to have the possibility to form in with Eli and Rush, but then Rush or Eli would do something that seemed to throw the whole chemistry for a team out of contention. Towards the end of the second season, it seemed that the show started to come together very well. However, I think it was a little too little and a little too late. I had very high expectations for the show, and imo, it let me down. If the show had continued into the 3rd season, i would have continued to watch, as a Stargate die hard fan. Yet at the same time, when the show was yanked, I didn't really cry over it as I definitely would have with Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

Again, the major problem was the service personnel. These supposedly highly trained, focused, special forces trained personnel would be involved with drama for the sake of drama, if this was true, then how the hell do they survive 6-12 months on operations. People picked for SF roles have to have certain traits, including resourefulness, adherance to the mission (in some cases above all). I am not saying they would not have interacted with the civilians, but there would have been more of a stand-off between them, as well as the control they would have shown.

I LOVED Stargate Universe.. Just streamed the whole series again before it leaves Amazon Prime. I was jarred when I first saw it back in 2009 by the sudden tonal shift from SG1 and SGA. It's tonally more similar to Battlestar Galactica which, I believe, was a directive from Syfy. Once you get used to that you can see what a great show it is with deep characterization. It was dark both in terms of lighting and tonally. More humor was being introduced in the second season and it was canceled way too soon. I loved the realism of the characterizations. Glad they were weaning off the Lost-style flashbacks. And with the stones they could have any character come and go from Earth so the story possibilities were endless. I blame Syfy. They backed away from hard scifi back then and SGU was sacrificed.

Those two had the potential to become the new Jackson & McKay, since Rush had quit his condescending treatment of Eli by the end of season 2 which would've probably changed the way Rush treated Eli from then on once they'd all be woken up from the stasis sleep and Eli even being a couple of years older to boot.

Unlike other Stargate series, it seemed that there was an awful amount of conflict and really there was only one character you liked, in my opinion. I found it very hard to watch at times and I just wanted to yell at the screen. I never felt that with any other Stargate at the time.

True there was a lot of internal struggle and the stargate community wasn't used to! But I thought that meant more start of season 2 when they started to pull together and that 90% where not there by choice either. But in my opinion stargate tried something new and unfortunately the majority didn't like it. But story wise and ancient cannon they hit the mark

I definitely feel similarly about the characters and it being difficult to watch and yelling at the screen! Although I definitely did more of that with SGA. The new Weir SUCKED, she was pathetic and terrible commander. It was really messed up how they ditched Jessica Steen apparently because she went to Burning Man. Her Dr. Weir was so much better, stronger & realistic. I often wonder how much better SGA would've been with her; because the writers definitely wrote for the way the series regular actors portrayed the characters...
Nearly all of the Atlantis expedition were constantly doing the dumbest, silly sh*t! McKay, Weir & Sheppard in particular, they acted like such unprofessional children so frequently.
They REALLY didn't know how to just mind their own business and avoiding insulting entire planets, and doing things that were way beyond them! It seemed impossible for then to do anything without wrecking so many other things and creating new problems that were even more severe.
SGA, even though I still enjoyed much of it, was definitely the worst of the 3 TV series for so many reasons.
When I would tell at SGA it was because of who outrageously unrealistic/implausible the sh*t was; for SGU at least it was all very believable & realistic (perhaps too much so) even if it was horrible, pathetic & selfish. So many of the character's choices & behavior definitely sucked of SGU, but they fit the characters and circumstances and it really made the characters so much more realistic.

SGU was great. The problem was half the fan base didn't get it and cried that it wasn't a real Stargate show. They wanted a SG1 2.0. That's why they started going back to earth all the time and crap to try and make that portion of the fanbase happy and those were the worst episodes. It was slow because it was a space opera like Battlestar Galactica. Stargate "Fans" got what they wanted because they cried like they spoke for all of us and destroyed a good thing. And now they are making videos titled Was SGU really that bad etc and profiting from it

I think most of the first season didn't feel like a Stargate show to me. When it started to focus more on the overall story, and spent less time wallowing in the sorrows of the crew it picked up. I hated the use of folk-like music when someone was having a depressed episode. It really started to feel like Stargate when we found out what Destiny's mission was. That really got me excited.

I really have to disagree. First, I didn't have any problem with the show having a darker tone and different visuals. That was great. What I HATED was all of the contrived interpersonal conflict between all of the characters. I mean, these people found themselves on a highly advanced ship of the Ancients that is on a grand and mysterious mission, and the writers essentially ignore that in order to focus almost entirely on petty bickering. That was not what I was watching for.
The second season episodes were basically just a series of meaningless fetch quests in order to solve the problem of the week. It got to the point where if they successfully found item A, B, C and D to fix whatever was broken that week, and there was still 10 minutes left, I knew that something else would break and they would have to hunt for item E. I'll agree that there was more "action" but nothing ever led to anything meaningful.
I also thought that it was unforgivable how they jerked around Eli in the girlfriend department. Watching him be strung along and then rejected by Chloe was heartbreaking. Then when he finds someone who genuinely cares for him, they immediately kill her off. This by itself is enough to sour me on the entire show.
Universe had a lot of potential, but it was just horribly executed.

The biggest problem was that people couldn't see the overarching story. A group of mostly talented people are stranded across the galaxy although they are not the types of people who would be chosen for such a grueling mission. The worst people possible evolve to become the only people capable of completing the mission. (I'm guessing about the end part since we were denied an ending.) This group wasn't selected or trained to work together, so the show starts with people forming hostilities, taking sides against each other, turning to alcohol to cope. The way older television used to be, without an evolving story line, meant that character chemistry remained constant throughout the show without any character development. People assumed that the entire series would be the initially established relationships and personal grudges. However, as you watch slowly over the course of the show, they get over their grievances and realize they will only survive if they start working together. You can see them making more of an effort to get along and work together. Because it got cut short, we don't get to see the outcome, but we did get to see a microcosm of what could be in the Common Descent/Epilogue story. They grow together to literally build a village and establish the development of an advanced civilization.

I have always been a big fan of SG-1 ever since I was little and then when stargated Atlantis came out I thought hey this is awesome new thing new design loved it. It said itself apart from The originals movie and the rebooted TV show for SG-1 and then at right after Atlantis ended couple years ago by an SGU come came out. At first I was a little caught off guard didn't quite like it thought it was kind of boring but after I watched it three or four times from season 1 all the way to through season 2 I began to realize it was one of the better of the three because it was original wall more original it said itself apart from SG-1 Stargate and the moon other movies that came out after you want him before as well as it said itself apart from Atlantis and this dude in this video is 100% right I totally agree with you man it was way ahead of its time if they would have waited a few years we probably could have gotten to see destiny and like a third maybe four or fourth season and see them actually complete destiny's mission maybe I would like to see that or maybe in the new movies that's coming out soon that maybe called Stargate legacy's. Maybe they can have it backstory for that to be the destiny showing up on Earth just randomly jump popping out of hyperspace maybe have it where Eli woke up Chloe they did a couple quick calculations not to the next galaxy disgusted with the rest of the crew and figured out they could make a jump similar to the one used by Atlantis when they traveled from Pegasus to Milky Way to destroy the zpm powered Hive ship that special jump I forget what they call it but they can maybe use something like that drain the ship entirely 100% out of power and let it recharge off of our son.
    yeah it'd be any concept

I always thought of SGA as a ripoff of SG1. Same characters with different names or genre, same takes, same problems, same villians. SGU was so fresh that I love it instantly. Usually changing the tone of a franchise is an interesting way of making new content. Someday I'll like to see a comedy SG show, or a horror one. Im currently rewatching it, and I think Human is actually the best episode of the whole show, but the really good ones, like Light or the whole Lucian Alliance takeover storyarc were actually in the first season. The cliffhanger was brilliant on thatone, the Lucian alliance commander was brilliant on thatone, she was cold and calculating, Greer was brilliant on thatone with his fanatical respect for his superiors.
Season 2 was okay, it wasnt as daring or innovative as season 1, it had its moments, like when the cultist programmer guy returns with his mates from the paradise planet and they all die, that was my favourite episode in that season I guess, or Rush's western style manhunt and revenge, those were really good episodes. I actually like these more philosophical and darker tones in SGU. In SGA Sunday was such an episode, where they killed off the doctor, it felt like a punch in the face, that one moment everyone wants to shake him off, the other he is dead, because thats exactly how you feel when you lose someone who is close to you, one moment they are there, the other you realize you will never see them again, and thinking about you should have spend more time with them before.

I found little to agree with in this analysis. SG-U was a successful attempt to "grow up" the franchise after its fall from the original movie down to comedic pap sci-fi of the _Sharknado_ ilk. But that was never going to play well with the _Teen Titans Go_ audience who simply were not ready for it and wanted more cartoons. I think the show's big mistake was in overestimating the audience. It was really a more mature show targeting a more refined palette.

OK - here is how to "bring it back".
The aliens who refurbished the shuttle arrive, fix the stasis pod and put Eli into it.
They also fix most of the failed systems as best they can.
(maybe they can get the engines running more efficiently and faster and the air scrubbers replaced with units that do not require chemicals to operate)
    Then they leave.
BUT although the pods keep people alive, there is an undetected malfunction and they don' stop the aging process.
Fast Forward and again some pods have failed.
Those that are still left working are for the actors who will be able to carry on with the show NOW.
Another "one way mission" from earth arrives and wakes up the survivors.
Or maybe a sunspot redirects a team of replacements going to relieve another team on a planet in the milky way to Destiny.
Destiny drops out to receive them and they find the survivors of the stasis pods and wake them up.
And off we go again, original cast where available, in the current time, and a bunch of "new blood".
Maybe Matt's son can be in the new arrivals???
Hopefully Eli is a survivor and he can stone back to visit his mom on her death bed one last time.

@@5226-p1e Eli would be "awake" when they (the aliens - maybe a set of aliens we have never seen before) get there and they could have decided not to do a "mind wipe" on him. He has of course got all the footage on kinos and even if his character does not survive, the footage would still be there for the survivors to see.
There are any number of possibilities here but I think that what I suggested would deal with all the problems like older cast, cast not able to return and the rest.
My 2 cents worth is all.
What I am getting at is that there MUST be a way to make a BELIEVABLE season 3.
We don't need something like Bobby walking out of the shower like they did in Dallas. (look it up you younger people...)
