I still kick myself to this day for not hanging onto all of my older Gameboy games. Or any of my older games. Mainly because some of them are worth a lot now. I had the original Link’s Awakening and I don’t know what i did with it.
the remake felt very give and take. the button mapping is better along with the fast travel and fixing the horse heads. eagle's tower no longer has the soft lock bug and the new physics prevents you from cheesing the dungeon puzzle like in the original.
I am so tired of people blaming the lack of buttons for "hampering the experience". Sure it made you go into the inventory every 2 sec, but I loved the sound effect when you selected items.
Beat the remake last night, and immediately dived back in to play the DX version for GBC right after. Such a wonderful game, with a fantastic remake. Hopefully we can the Oracle Games remade in the 3D style that Links Awakening... And add more content you could do and even letting you get the secret code items and letting you enjoy both games... I just played this game again for the first time since I played it as a kid on the original Gameboy in the 90s. I played the color version through the switch online gameboy. Still a good Zelda adventure.
I love the DX as my first one and the original for the aesthetics but the switch remake wins in my book it made me cry even when I knew what would happen I still broke after seeing the ending
Oh the memories coming back. Good times for the original , GBC DX and Switch version. Thank you for the review and side by side comparison. The Switch version is a good retro modern make of the game. It makes me smile and brings back good memories and still frustrates me too. Just like the classic ones. Lol
So many memories flooding back into my mind. The original GameBoy version was the second Zelda game I've beaten back in the late 90s. Hopefully we get a remaster of A Link to the Past in the same fashion 🤞
My wife got me the limited edition Legend of Zelda Game and Watch, and it has the original Game Boy version on it, so I'm playing it on that. Next, I'll play through DX on the Switch through my NSO expansion pack subscription
I was mostly happy with the remake, but I was disappointed that they changed the mechanics of the fire rod. In the GBA version it basically is so powerful in all cases it breaks the game, which is okay because it's the last item you get--literally immediately after you get it you beat the level 8 boss and then go on to the wind fish's egg. (Or you could do what I did and do Enter Turtle Rock Early trick and use it to help with dungeon 7). In nay case the remake made it less punchy. It doesn't feel as good to use, which was kinda disappointing. Also you can't set chickens on fire with it anymore
links awakening DX on a modded gameboy color with backlit screen is the only way to play this game because you can own the original cartridge and then its not just some rom for a newer system or next gen thing

The best version is still the original. It is easy to explain: This game was designed with the hardware limitations and this was almost perfectly done. Especially the graphics work with the story. This is one of the few examples where I count this as a story away from the usual Ganon-catches-Zelda "stories". This story is dark and nihilistic and here the green-gray fits perfectly. Even the DX is too much and the additional dungeon is not good. Then the minor censorship (also in the German version). The Switch port looks amazing, but it's nothing for this game. The additional dungeon maker is just bad. But probably for new players it's the best version with modern graphics, good sounds and more than 4 buttons. But overall the original has a touch of creativity. You had only 2 action buttons, but they invented the bomb-arrow, running and jumping in Zelda, reused running with sword and made the shield to an actual usable item.
GBC. The Switch version looks like a baby cell phone game. GBC has a mystical and haunting feel that nothing else could possibly match. I think it's important to acknowledge that the GB, GBC, and Switch are separate artistic media. You can't just keep updating the graphics/sounds/etc. because you think that makes it better, you have to demonstrate an understanding of what made the original great.
While you certaily did your best you did brush off the original GB version to quickly imo. It is for me hands down the best version not just because the EU versions were uncensored but also they did not have the game breaking bugs the JP version has. And the deluxe version made also some changes which made the game very easy so the difference from OG to DX is pretty noticable. But I agree that the QoL changrs on the switch make it a great experience as well, even though I do NOT likr the artstyle at all. 😢
I really wanted to like the Switch remake but the camera style + smear on the top and bottom of the screen, the octagon directional movement, and the constant horrible frame rate dips really hindered my enjoyment of the game. After watching this comparison I might give it another try, but for now I still have to give the crown to the DX version.
The Switch version is not at a constant 1080p. It's a variable resolution that cycles back and forth between 1080p and 720p, and the framerate is poor in some places. It also has noticeable aliasing. With that said, it's a great game, beautiful graphics and a number of improvements. The visual and performance blemishes take away a bit from what should have been a perfect presentation.
@@thuggeegaming659 not necessarily a problem but it feels much more clunky. DX on 3DS almost feels like omni-directional movement and felt a lot better (to me personally)
@@thuggeegaming659 but more restrictive than omni-directional :D 'infinitely' >> 8-directional. iirc, the original (and DX) were both 8-directional (like the remake) but on 3DS one has the analoge stick/slider which gives the feeling of (infinitely) more directions. Now I'm not sure if that was intended or not but in comparison, the remake feels more restricted
I suppose the $6 mentioned means it's in USD. That's like SGD $8 to $9. I will download the ROM for the GBC version instead, based on your recommendation. Saving $ is most important.
whilst the switch version seems marginally better, it sucks that its a full price game when DX is 1/10th the price without discounts on eshop or free if you emulate
Sigh it’s crazy to say I miss the eshop. If they told us how goated the eshop will be compared to the future shops when Wii and Wiiu launched we’d all just look confused
Hot Head in original was more devastating with its lava hitting you, which takes about half your hearts, whereas in Switch it takes one heart. The original was much more challenging in my opinion. The Switch brought more life to the game.
May 17,2023 Good evening Honestly never played this game on the Gameboy / 3DS so the switch version will be my 1st experience 🙂 and the only other zelda game i played was Phantom hourglass wasn't fond of it 😒i like the characters Link & Zelda that's it.
For me I cannot stand the remake for a multitude of reasons, besides like removing the photo album which worked more into the idea of the game with memories. I don't like how the atmosphere is ruined (the game is too bright and at some points the game doesn't stand out in certain sections anymore, see the screen of you fighting the big stalfos boss, same for quite some music tracks with the best standout track being the 6th dungeon which I was never really a fan of in the original but most other tracks in the game feel wrong instrumented or lack musical direction for what they want to be, heck the creepy parts of most dungeon music themes is lost where it had a "stalking" nature to it, being watched etc.. I also don't like, for a 100% completionist and also FOMO struggling person that the remake is an already easy Zelda title a huge disfavor with being even easier, even more handholdy, changing the (german) localisation in a negative way where it loses it's charm of being sarcastic at times or cheeky. And for what? Extra heart containers you don't need cuz the refill ingame is very cheap in compare for like ALTTP? It feels like stretching out game time with the optional "new" stuff. So overall, while the GBC game is limited with items and their usages, I can totally get behind if you come from 3D Zelda games or ALTTP to this, I still think the GBC version also is the superior game showing off quite some astonishing "this was on GBC?!" stuff with the hardware specs. Also the photo album could have easily been expanded which I thought would be likely to happen instead, but no, just some dampe fanservice and a quite pointless and unrefined zelda dungeon maker that is rather a "puzzle yourself a dungeon made from rooms already existing", which feels like halfassed insulting to me.

play the GameBoy Colour DX version or original. the switch remake just... no, the artstyle doesn't look right in 3d, they should've stuck to the original artwork and based the remake's look on the artwork instead of the ingame graphics of the GBC version. Hopefully we can the Oracle Games remade in the 3D style that Links Awakening...
And add more content you could do and even letting you get the secret code items and letting you enjoy both games...
Kinda like you can add extra DLC for the Oracle games without the need of the codes...
Like too and can get more story into each game too...
Just saying I would prefer all the content in the games unlike to link cable them, and can have whatever...
I dont think they would fit in this style, and Nintendo wouldnt be that exctatic to remake these games that failed to sell
@@aymanaboufarise4346 failed to sell? absolutely not. they'll definitely be remade. these games are in high demand and seen in high regard, and seasons is my favorite handheld zelda game ever made. not sure where you're getting your info from.

1 gameboy advance and both Games that it! (there is a exclusive Advance ring but its useless anyway)
I remember reading positive reviews of
Links Awakening on Nintendo Power years ago.
The nostalgia lol 😎
They should have kept the camera shop. I loved those little cutscenes.
I remember getting the DX version as a kid, only I still had the original game boy. The following year I finally got a game boy color. I was so excited to finally be able to play the color dungeon!
How disappointed were you when you found out how mediocre the color dungeon was? Lol.
@@inputfunny lol, you know I didn’t realize how lackluster it was until I played it again on the remake.
@@chriswhetton3584 Nostalgia's a heck of a drug.
@@inputfunny It's got nothing to do with nostalgia dude. He said the straight opposite, that the remake made him realize how lacking it was, as you said it was. If anything, this is more about how children are more easy to impress, and what you found mindblowing as a kid you may no longer.
Lol
I prefer Link's Awakening DX (GBC)

Please note that the GBC version is no longer available in the 3DS eShop unless you've purchased the game beforehand.
The Switch remake is just amazing I hope I could beat the game over and over again. To me it is among the best Zelda's titles.
I really love the new OST
The original was was the first game boy game i ever owned when i got a game boy it came free with the game boypocket ice blue remember struggling with it when i was 8 years old trying to figure out what to do or go but i love it was my first zelda game and got me into zelda i recently downloaded the DX version on my phone for myoldboy im almost about to beat just got the last instruments i wanted to beat it before playing the switch one someone gave me to notice all the changes still want to play the original one before dx again to beat when i think of it was a hard game for a child but happy this was my first zelda game and lovr found for many other zelda games i had on game boy n64 game cube and now switch main reason when i keep buying Nintendo to play the latest zelda games 🎮
I just wish there was an original OST pack I could get for the switch version. The sound changes, especially in the opening, just bother me too much
I'd kill for Oracle's remake in the same style. They did such a good job and its beautiful.
The DX is the best in my opinion
I mean money wise yeah! but the switch version is really good aside from small nitpicks!
Without the diorama artstyle (since it wouldn’t really fit thematically), they should remake the Oracle games using this remake as a base.
I still prefer the original. Not because of nostalgia but because the controls felt clunky or stiff on the switch.
K
The dx version felt more fast paced which I loved
true. On 3DS the game actually feels like it has 360° movement because of the analogue stick/slider of the 3DS

@@blackdragoncyrus yep, thx - corrected.
Sorry not native English speaker and my autocorrect isn't either
I really wanted to like the Switch remake but the camera style + smear on the top and bottom of the screen, the octagon directional movement, and the constant horrible frame rate dips really hindered my enjoyment of the game. After watching this comparison I might give it another try, but for now I still have to give the crown to the DX version.
The PC Port Links-Awakening-DX-HD
The Switch version is not at a constant 1080p. It's a variable resolution that cycles back and forth between 1080p and 720p, and the framerate is poor in some places. It also has noticeable aliasing. With that said, it's a great game, beautiful graphics and a number of improvements. The visual and performance blemishes take away a bit from what should have been a perfect presentation.
8-directional movement should've been cut
@@bumpsy Why? I didn't have a problem with it
@@thuggeegaming659 not necessarily a problem but it feels much more clunky. DX on 3DS almost feels like omni-directional movement and felt a lot better (to me personally)
@@bumpsy 8 directional movement, by definition is less clunky and restrictive.
@@thuggeegaming659 but more restrictive than omni-directional :D
'infinitely' >> 8-directional.
iirc, the original (and DX) were both 8-directional (like the remake) but on 3DS one has the analoge stick/slider which gives the feeling of (infinitely) more directions. Now I'm not sure if that was intended or not but in comparison, the remake feels more restricted
....and now there is a PC port that may be the superior experience
DX HD is the new best way to play :D
I hope they make legend of Zelda minnish cap remake
Plus the oracle games

I suppose the $6 mentioned means it's in USD. That's like SGD $8 to $9.
I will download the ROM for the GBC version instead, based on your recommendation. Saving $ is most important.
Didn't they put the original soundtrack in the Switch remake? I'm not keen on the Switch music.
I would play both the original version of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX version.
I love the game, but much like 3D dot heroes, the bloom makes it hard to look at outside
The original Links awakening is my second favorite Zelda right after Link to the past.

Anyone else think the one thing they could have done was add even more item buttons? Like the dpad and the shoulder buttons
Hot Head in original was more devastating with its lava hitting you, which takes about half your hearts, whereas in Switch it takes one heart. The original was much more challenging in my opinion. The Switch brought more life to the game.

fantastic remake, anyone moaning clearly aint a zelda fan
Can you play the oringinal colored one on switch not the remake?
Since February 2023, Link's Awakening DX is part of the Game Boy selection that one can get with a Switch Online subscription.
The cute look of LA actually made me totally uninterested.
The original version can only be played via emulation. The GBC version can be played via 3DS Virtual Console.
Not at all I kinda prefer the original and I'm responding too a 1 year old comment :/

7:09 - I had this game preordered because Link's Awakening is my favorite in the series. I returned it instead of playing it because of this bull💩. I can't believe Nintendo let one of their number one franchises ship in such a sorry state.
And as far as I'm aware, to this day they've done absolutely nothing to improve it. At least give an option to cap the framerate to 30 if it can't hold 60. Consistent is more important than high. Absolute disaster. I'll stick with the GameBoy versions.

play the GameBoy Colour DX version or original. the switch remake just... no, the artstyle doesn't look right in 3d, they should've stuck to the original artwork and based the remake's look on the artwork instead of the ingame graphics of the GBC version. I'm serious that it is off putting.
Xenoblade 1's Definitive edition is slightly more tolerable but I still dislike it for the artstyle change, instead of taking the original artstyle of the game and making it look good, they threw it out.

@@williamguzman4952 no I have taste
I just understand that adapting artstyles literally to 3d doesn't look right, and this is one of those cases where they should've tried making the game look how it would've looked if they weren't limited by the GameBoy's hardware instead of taking an artstyle made due to hardware limitations and adapting it literally to 3d.
