- Hi Everyone, thanks for watching...
me and my dad recently took on the epic challenge of hiking the West Highland Way in winter, ill be splitting this in to 3 videos...
Following this little series you'll see that the Scottish winters can be pretty unpredictable and unforgiving but also SPECTACULAR!
hope you enjoy the series and any questions let me know...
it would be really appreciated if you'd drop a like, comment and subscribe to the channel! thankssss
much love, Sam and Martin (Dad)
Treasure those memories with your Dad I lost mine a few years ago! We did so much fishing together he was my best friend! Love your shorts but these UA-cam longer videos are great!
I’ve enjoyed watching your videos for a while but felt compelled to comment on this one. My Dad was a keen walker, and got all of us kids into it when we were young. When we were all grown up we’d go up to the Peak District and I’ve got very fond memories of exploring the area as a family.
My Dad passed away a few months ago and whilst I miss him dearly, watching you have a lovely time with your Dad has put a smile on my face and made me think of the good times. Thanks for posting, top video and what an adventure!
Your dad is lovely treasure every moment. I don't have mine anymore.
I love your adventures Sam & having dad along makes it even better. ♥️
Can’t wait for part two! I walked the West Highland Way twice this year so this is bringing back lots of happy memories 😊
Thanks for sharing your walk both of you. Looking forward to part two 😊
Love your content. Love especially the relationship with your Dad ❤
I've been looking forward to this video. The Shorts series you did of this hike was incredible, glad there is more to see.
Amazing video Sam, you are so lucky to be able to be doing it with your dad and making memories. 👍
Agreed mate! Making the most of it for sure
Thank you for a beautiful recap; really enjoying it.
Well done Dad +Lad brave taking on this walk in winter we did it a couple of years ago in March thought the scenery was stunning then but you will get some snow capped mountains which looked stunning in the intro, looking forward to the next episode. 👍
Such a wonderful way to make lasting memories with your dad. Loved seeing a small glimpse of your beautiful country!
Thanks for watching! It gets better too 👍🏴
Wow men fantastic, loving the first episode, your dad is brilliant.
Just subscribed, I walked the WHW twice this year late May and again in early October.
I don’t think I’m tough enough these days to attempt it in winter 🥶, your first film is excellent I can’t wait to see the whole series.
Excellent filming and narration, thank you for sharing your adventure, best regards, Chris. 🍻🍻👍👍👍👍
Magic 😊..
You n dad do right,
Grab every chance at every opportunity to take time to make time together.
Its Great stuff and a magic memory n film too😊
Its awesome seeing it in winter. I completed it again in may. Brilliant videos.
I have that exact same pack, I would be really interested to see a video on the gear you took and how you packed that much stuff in there!
I’d like to see that too
Such a beautiful scenery my friend. You filmed this whole area so nicely! Brilliant
Thanks so much!
Awwwww loved this. Thank you! Reminded me of the walks from my old house - at 3.22 onwards was the start of the west highland way route close to our last house. We had a wee son then who was too young but I would love to do it all one day!! Really looking forward to watching it all. Loved your photos and loved that you did it with your Dad. Amazing memories x
Great video and memories for you and dad 😊
Fantastic trip you and your dad you may not appreciate it but your dad certainly will great to see 👍
This is SO good. I thoroughly enjoyed it! Well done Sam and Dad for putting up with that cold. Brrrrr...
Thankssss! The cold was worth the viewssss over the next section especially!
My wife and I are planning to do this walk in the summer, GREAT content so thanks for filming, editing and posting.
wow what a great start , loving the views , you cant beat that cheesy mash , i hope one day i get to do a walk like this with my son
Your mad lad , glad you got home safe
Great video. I remember doing the west Highland way in summer. Real Eye opener
Would love to do this, but I'd probably slip and break an ankle before even leaving Milngavie! Lovely to see you spending such quality time with your dad. I lost mines a number of years ago and would have loved to have done the WHW with him. I can see Conic Hill from my house, but I've never climbed it in winter, was lovely see sunrise from it. You can camp along the lochside in summer, provided you have a permit which isn't even a fiver.
Oak tree pub does amazing food, we pop in often as only 30mins from the house. Hope you enjoyed your visit another great video
Cracked up when you said "Look there's a defib, we don't need that yet" haha
That was a fab well made video, looking forward to many more
Looks so amazing 😍 I've been on holiday near Loch Lomond and loved it. Excited for the rest of this series
Wow we did it in August over 5 days and that was tough but winter!! Kudos 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love the vid! Was great to meet you both at the car park on Loch Lomond 👍
Hey Sam, looks like the beginning of an amazing adventure, safe travels.
Excellent video Sam 👍🏼 we really enjoyed the winter scenery on the WHW. We are doing this in April next year and are so excited. Look forward to the second part 👍🏼 liked and subscribed from a fellow UA-camr 🤜💥
That row of houses at 7:20, me and my family stayed in one of them last Christmas, great location
This is awesome!
Fair play for braving that cold weather! I live in Glasgow and it was absolutely baltic that week you done this 😂
Great video mate! Been watching along with your reels! Great stuff 👌🏼 Looking forward to your other videos from it! Doing the WHW in April, looks stunning. Keep them coming ATB 👌🏼
This is great ,keep my horse at the Drymen camping ⛺️ she in field not a tent lol 😂
What a great thing to do with your dad. A cracking trip and well filmed. Cheers.
Enjoyed that first video mate. Great tip about the insulated bag for the electrics!
Awesome mate. Can't wait to see the next video
No interest in hiking in real life but you somehow popped up in my recommended, greatful that you did loved the vid and the personality of you and your old man
Subbed
Really enjoying your videos - can’t wait to do it next Sept. But between now and then I’m ticking off shorter day/2day hikes across the WHW.
Me nd my wife are doing ,west highland way ,next year in may, over 7 days with accommodation, no tents lol, hopefully we will be still married when we finish,,😂😂
Done the WHW twice.
Day one: Oak Tree Balmaha
Day two: Rowcoish bothy on Ben Lomond
Day three: Bienglas Farm
Sat four: Tynedrum
Day five: Inverarnan
Day six: Kinlochleven
Great series Sam. Proper inspiring to get out . Intrigued where you parked at the start of the trail
we parked at the premier inn Milngavie they only ask for a small donation to a local charity
Stumbled across this after doing the Way back in June. Loved this video, crazy seeing it under all the sleet and snow. Curious to know if you saw anyone else doing the walk on your travels?
You’ve inspired me to walk it!
Enjoy! It’s a beauty!
DAD is Rocky!!!! ❤
Just discovered your content. Looking forward to the next video. Hoping to complete this trail myself. Looks like you could get away with bringing a lot less food!
In summer mate you definitely can, there’s places open to eat all the way… in winter a lot are closed so you have to carry a bit more.. I always like to carry to much though I’ve ran out before and it wasn’t fun 😂😂 thanks for watching along!
Looking forward to the next video day 3
It's looks amazing!🤩 it makes me want to come back to the highlands!!
Do it!
I wish not really a solo traveller. But one day, for sure 😊
Awesome!
The WHW is literally one of THE best hikes in the UK...& for me personally the only thing that was more enjoyable was the SWCP.
Might have to jump on a train after Xmas & redo it for a winter version myself after seeing this...!
ATB
.Wish.
Great spot at the half way point at that bench I camped there 👌👌
Subbed and looking forward to your next video thanks for sharing cracking video
Looking forward to seeing the test of this, and perhaps a summary from you and your dad if the experience would be cool 🎉
Yes good idea mate! Thanks for watching !
@Samrculley thanks for sharing your experience, you're a legend
well done boys!
Great video dude👏
🥶🥶🥶🥶 looks Baltic lad... top video 👍👍👍👍
Awesome video!
You should walk on to Balmaha on day one. The stay at the Rowchoish Bothy by Ben Lomond on day two.
love this
Stayed in the Rowchoish bothy a few times. It’s brilliant.
First time there was just the four of my group. We tied the door shut when we went to sleep late on. Wild storm outside and about 2am we were woken up by someone trying to get in. Bloody scary. Who is on the side of Ben Lomond in a bad storm at 2am???
Second time there was already 3 groups there. One was a lone psychopath. We set a good fire, had food and went to sleep. I woke up in the middle of the night and he was crouched in the corner, lit up by the fire, just staring at us all.
top notch stuff
Taking the high road was definitely the correct choice.
Yeah that time of year you're probably right.
I took the low path in September and it was a bit of a pain.
@@MG-bs5mr I took it the previous September to you and it was the most memorable day's hiking of my entire life. Stunning, but not for the faint hearted. You really need a full day's light for it and I'd be worried about Sam's old man with all the scrambling involved.
@@thecabooseattheendofthetra9260
yeah I think they did the right thing by taking the higher path.
Enjoyed that mate 👏
Significantly colder looking than when i went in October 😂
Where did you get the insulated pouvh from? Great video!
It’s from valley and peak mate online shop 👍
How much did your packs weigh?
Are there any items you regret taking?
Is there anything you regret not bringing?
Mine was about 18kg with food and water dads was about 16kg
Pretty much everything I took I needed… wish I’d have some sort of shoes to put on at night (tent shoes) type things… I’d have to look at stove set ups that work a bit better in the -10 conditions because mine was struggling even with the gas saying it’s good down to minus 27 not too sure what went on there, besides that pretty happy with everything… I’d also carry a warmer sleeping bag, -6 is pretty much the limit for that bag, when I got lower I could tell!
@ Thanks for that. Winter is a challenging time to do that walk, so good effort to you and your dad( ‘old trees just get stronger’)
I think it would a bit more ‘user friendly’ a little later in the year!
Great video 🙂👍
My brother did this last year
He said it was fantastic in winter
Looks epic
A guy from derby saying hello to every sheep he sees is funny 🤣
Hi Sam, new sub and not seen your channel before, just my cup of tea. I did a lot with my Dad too sadly passed away now, so really nice to see you out with your Dad.
From the sound of your accent you may be not far from me in Leicester.
Great Idea doing this trail in winter, now there’s an idea for me as it’s one I’ve not done, it’s popularity has always me off.
Great vid and chat.
I was interested in the Muon myself so wondering how that was for you , won’t be getting it now though as amazingly I was just gifted the osprey Levity 60, I’ve had the 45 since it came out and I love that so very pleased to get the larger version.
Anyway
A very merry Christmas to you and your family.
🎄🍻
Hi Dave! Thanks for watching, I’m from Derby!
I’ve always fancied it in winter and I’m so glad we did it, got quite lucky with the weather besides it dropping to minus 10 one night!
That’s a great pack too! The RAB is awesome for comfort but each bag has their own pros and cons right! Merry Christmas to you too!
@ cheers Sam👍
Merry christmas 🥶🧤🥶🛷🎄⛄🎄⛄🎅🐿️🏔️mark😊😊😊
And to you too!! 🎄🎅
Loved watching this, it looked amazing! I would be interested in hearing what kit you took. Is it very well signposted? Would it be easy to go off track?
It’s well signposted most of the way to be fair but you’d still need a map or some type of navigation device definitely 👍👍
Brilliant liked and subscribed yeeee haaaa
Cheers brotherrrrr 👍👍
Mega mate ✅
What backpack volume do you use for winter hiking/camping?
This is 50 litre mate, it’s a bit of a push to fit it all in though! But it works
What month did you walk it?
December Just finished it mate last week 👍
Excuse me if this is a rude question but how old is Dad? Reason I ask is I am 57 and am trying to judge whether or not to take this hike on. I've hiked the Peak District and Rhinogs areas extensively and am relatively fit but then I haven't done a 'marathon' hike for many years.
Great video!
Hey, dad is 64 he’s done a lot of these types of hikes before but it’s doable for sure, you don’t have to hike mega long days you can break it up however you like 👍👍
@@Samrculley Cheers mate! Looking to do a long hike and this one just caught my eye.
Don't mind the long days or the elevation changes and it certainly helps that you can restock along the way. Last time I was out for 6 days was in South Africa; we walked 112km, average elevation change around 700m per day, never saw a soul for 6 days and the temp was slightly above what you went through - between 31-41 degrees C lol. My only issue is I will be flying solo so will need to go in a slightly busier time.
Anyway, loved the series!! Hoping you do a vid on your kit.
You sound like a seasoned hiker mate. If you've done the bogs of the Peak District and the Rhino's, you'll be fine. I'm 64 and retiring in 7 weeks and one of the first on my list is going to be the rough bounds of Knoydart. Hope you have a good trip.
@StephenOverthrow 7 weeks huh? Any idea how jealous I am? 🤣🤣
I think I'd be fine but going solo is my main concern. Will have to find a balance between having other people on the trail while still being able to enjoy relative peace and quiet.
if you plan you trip around May time (to avoid the dreaded Scottish midge from June onwards) there are usually a fair amount of people on the trail then. Get planning chap and have a good one. Cheers, Ozzy.
6:18 so you went to the Beech Tree and you didn’t have a Beech Tree Burger? Shame on you.
Beech Tree Challenge is a must.
If you dont treat the WHW as 😊me big pub crawl, the you aren’t doing it properly.
