Look at the nuts production Adam Fox has with the Rangers. Quinn Hughes would be a Norris winning D man assisting Vesce to a 60 goal year and helping Vesce develop into that 96 overall player. On the other hand Auston Matthews would be great for a super team that focuses on the offensive and allows you some salary if you dont go for that 20 million dollar contract. So imo Hughes would be a better signing for the long term development while Matthews would be the better signing for a special super team that scores more goals than any team in NHL history.
@@shreksswamp1182 The only issue with Hughes is the defence lineups. It is hard to split Kurtz and the Blues guy because of the +44 last season. You are only playing Hughes first line which means Werenski or Chykrn would be moved down to the third and likely means they will not want to resign if they need contracts after the year. You could move Kurtz with Hughes but you still end up in the same situation.

I think Hughes is the play, goal scoring wasn’t the problem last season. Keeping the puck out of the net and getting a ppg d man to help the top 2 lines would be huge. Matthews might steal shots from the other shooters which doesn’t kill you but also doesn’t help develop Vesce
1. My focus would be on Hughes. There is a team interested in Matthews which could be Toronto which who could have cap space after Taveras retired. Hughes still has no one interested in him. Also Hughes could be also be a long term replacement for Chychrun. 2. Consider re-signing Vesce, Kurtz (who wants Chychrun money long term) , and Nabokov (who only wants $2-2.5 million a year) immediately and Kurri who wants $4 million per year a bit later. Also with RFAs you can give them qualifying offers, so it might be an option for the non-Vesce guys. If someone offer sheets them, you get draft picks. 3. Consider trading for an RFA like Seider and Jancevski, or maybe Tkachuk and re-sign them. Make sure to trade a contract for them like Chychrun, Macelli, or even Werenski for them. 4. On your team, Macelli and Chychrun should be your main trade bait for either an RFA, younger players, or first rounders. Heck clearing Macelli and Chychrun plus something else might get you enough cap to sign both Matthews and Hughes and not stress less about clear cap to re-sign Vesce. 5. Won't happen but check if Bear Erne is on Ottawa's trade block. Got to cover all bases. 6. Consider Vesce as a future center, his face off stats is better than Doan and Kerfoot. You already got two 50 goal scorers John. Hughes is the better pick to shut down Bedard or the other studs in the playoffs. He will also help on the power play and will ultimately help the depth on your bottom pairing. Having Hughes, Chychrun, and Werenski also gives Kurtz an elite defenceman to play with all year.
To heck with realism. We want both matthews and Quinn. Trade Chicyurn to get some picks and than try to get both. If you want the team to be legendary.

You have 2 shot hog goal scorers, see what Quinn wants for 1 year (it will be way less than 17M) give him $3M over asking and you will get him to make your PP, PK, and 5 on 5 way better. You could also trade Werenski and Macelli for a playmaking sniper to play with Cooley and Vesce
Hughes should definitely be the priority! Need an elite defenseman against a team like Chicago! If you can though, try to get both Hughes and Matthews as some other people are suggesting and create one of the greatest teams of all time, even if it's just for one year.

Hey John, I've tended to have success with having a bona fide offensive defenceman. They tend to help your offensive players, your powerplay, and the high overall is also a great thing in the real time sims. When you look at your team, you are missing a genuine elite defenceman, but you have a few forwards who are elite in overall and some who simulate at close to that level also. For me, Hughes is a missing piece that will likely greatly help the Yetis. Matthews is Matthews, you can't deny it, but what he brings you already have some degree of. The same can't be said for Hughes. You've got some firepower up front already and having Hughes on the back end will help improve that while also massively improving your defensive side of things. At the end of the day, you seem to be enjoying this series a lot and it's mutual. Cheers from a 36 year old who enjoys the entertainment you provide.
In my opinion, hughes is the pick. Kurtz can become expendable at that point because he doesn't want to resign, and even if you resign him, he wants tons of money for being 84 overall. We are still not sure if he grows to that top 2 defenseman to eventually replace werenski.

Goal scoring players is not a problem anymore so might as well focus on defense but also making a super team at the same time. Whatsoever u gotta get one of them, but Hugh’s is the guy. id say get hughes in free agency. 1 look at the rangers they got the goalie, they got the stud d-man in fox whos winning norris’ like crazy and the forwards to support. 2 you can also play with it because you gotta pay everyone next year but can help you move on from chychrun next season
Another vote here for Hughes. You need a puck mover on the pp. Should help your top line keep growing. Locking Hughes up long term would guarantee a better pp and probably pk. You have a scorer per line already. Also you need to sign a good 3c who can kill penalties and win faceoffs. Last thing... Give Guenther a chance on line 1. He might help that line defensively as his hits create possession. Lets not forget he is more of a playmaker anyways.
Hughes is also American so there's team America with that too. IMO Quinn is the way to go for one year as he will not only help out defensively to stop bedard, but also help to put up more goals on them too.
When signing FA, look at what the player wants each year (1 year deal, 2 year deal, etc etc). Often youll find deals for short term deals. Do not pay guys $20 million for one bloody season. And ALWAYS wait until the preseason for resigning extensions. Its always lower.
I pulled a superbman and traded 5 firsts for a franchise player, won the RoY playing with another rookie on his line who was the second best rookie and lost in the cup finals, ended up being an 88 after the season started at an 81
How Potential Works: Hey Johnny, here is how I understand NHL's Potential system works: When it says low, medium, or high, this is the chance that players will grow and its determined when they are created. High players will grow more often than medium or low, but like you saw with gonchar and nabokov, its not a certainty. What this means, if a player grows he will continue to grow. so you can go look around the league for low elite players who have tradable value and then look at their simulated production, if its grows year over year they are a prospect with upswing value.
Ive done a lot of gm modes John and in the playoffs I’ve felt having a few high overall 2 way forwards sprinkled in the top 6 helps the real time sim A LOT. Because they play well defensively they can make up for a weak d core and help shutdown the other teams offensive studs, I know you have Marchand and stone but the top 6 is all offensive guys (snipers playmaker and vesce is a defensive liability with all his PIMS) which could be why Bedard played insane and u went out.
I know it sucks Johnny but the only way I know to full uncover players in the draft is to discover 1)player type 2)strengths and weaknesses 3)skills assessment and then 4)potential and comparison If you want to get late round gems you HAVE to do it this way
Hey John, so you can go into edit player and the stat that says willingness to fight under their information like height and birthplace is actually the chance they take penalties! Either you can mix in a special work around where you say we’ll take one player a year and bump down his willingness to fight like you have a meeting with him in real life. Or you can maybe trade players with a high chance of fighting since they are just gonna kill you during the playoffs! I bet Kurri has a high willingness to fight. Also check their discipline stat too! Love the content keep it up!
the BIAS for TRASHTHEWS is real. I would take Quinn Hughes because he would help his Powerplay and 5on5 and Matthews would be taking goals away from Vesce probably stopping him from getting to 94/96 overall. just my opinion though. Hughes would help Vesce get so much more goals,
I would suggest going after Seider. Your problem in the playoffs was goals against and he is a big 2-way defenseman who will shut down and wear down the other teams stars. Plus, he's only asking for 8.75 over 3 years. Then your defensive core looks like Werenski and Seider, Chychrun and Kurtz, then Lindstein (who had a bunch of PIMs in the playoffs) can play on the 3rd pairing to limit his PIMs
If you're deciding between the two, Hughes is the way to go. You're going to get more natural growth from Vesce who could end up being the 96 OVR that you need come playoffs. Hughes would be long and away your best defenceman and would not only give you more flexibility on the backend, but would also give Kurtz the best possible partner to play with for his growth. For me, Hughes is the obvious choice.
Quinn is an absolute cheat code in this game. Can easily put up over a ppg especially with the two lethal shooters on utahs powerplay. Pay anything for that guy. Don’t need Matthews, vesce is the franchise shooter
This is exactly what happens in my Franchise modes as well. players coming and going, ad star RFA not wanting to sign... crazy hard to keep everything together if you don't pick the game apart yourself. the game never tells you what to do, hiding eveyrthing.
You’re going to have to put Hynes as the AHL backup this year and hope he grows. Even if you left him unsigned, there was a great chance he’d be a low enough overall to not garner a huge contract after his ELC. I would load up your AHL squad with higher overall league min players to help him out this next season.
Johnny, whatever big fish you reel in, sign them to a 2 year deal and flip them for some assets at next years draft. Imagine the storyline, you sign matthews to a 2 year deal then send him to the team with the first overall pick next year or something like that so they’ll be going into the following season with the number 1 pick and Auston matthews Could be interesting Also all the guys who don’t want an extension will accept for .250 mil for than asking price no matter how high the original asking price was
i know the big signing super team deal is tempting...but what is the real problem with the team?? it's not goal scoring, it's not the power play, it's really not even the pk...besides the salary cap, it's keeping the puck out of the net 5v5 (and shutting down Bedard)...we've been down this road before with the flashy goalies and their high overalls, but any goalie with the right team in front of them can have a .910 or better season, at half the price of swayman. (i really dont like goalie contracts)...that would cut some cap issues by trading swayman and going after a stud defender and a leget defender to beef up the blue line...the boys need some help back there so they don't look bad...thats why they don't want to sign extensions lol let mathews go...i know it's hard but youll be better off for it next year, and maybe Vesce will change his mind about that extension...then again, if he has a good year, he's going to want more...tough choices ahead for sure
I won the presidents and a cup with a nursing home roster and a young supporting cast, literally a 82 OVR Flower in net, 78 OVR Brodin on my first pair with a 87 OVR Girard, shutting down their first line. Hey Johnny you didn't know what to do after line changes and it didn't really affect your real time sim after crushing game 3. I think what you should have changed is your team strategies. Beginning of each round of the playoffs, I look in the standings the team I'm up against and see which approach defensive or an offensive is the best game plan. I think EA sees you kept your same strat from the regular season so it's easier for them to make it tougher for your team getting to next round.
Hughes, Hughes, Hughes all day long over Matthews in this universe Johnny. I mean, get both if ya can (lmao) but I'd go with Hughes to give you the epic d-man feeding Vesce. Oh, the best line mates ive found are PWF, PLY, SNP. Regarding the penalties, i read on the EA Sports NHL boards that this isnt an isolated issue. Check your settings, its recommended you lower the player penalties that you take to about 25%, & lower the computer's penalties to 50%. This apparently is a more accurate PIM scale, it goes to about 50-50 as opposed to hoe you were wrecked by the refs vs Chicago. It worked for me through a couple of my sims, even though i was still being penalized slightly more than the computer, but the parity was FAR closer. Just a thought. Also, for rhe love of all thats holy, SCOUT JUNIOR PLAYERS during the regular season lol

Johnny it would be interesting if you brough Matthews for that big one year contract while also maybe considering bring in Kadri as an assistant or associate coach. Usually Kadri is a B- to B coach so he could work. However for Matthews even if you signed him it doesn't guarantee that he'll want an extension while there's also the fact that your gonna have to sign Vesce to an extension. Depending on how much extension dollars you'll have left you might only get Matthews for one season unless they both reasonably sign extensions at the right price. I know from experience as I did a Nashville Predators Franchise where I trade for and extended Mitch Marner, when I did at first he wanted to extend as I paid him 7x11.5, however once his contract was up he didn't want an extension which resulted in him wanting 12.5 million for a 3 years for at 34 year old, I was able to negotiate with him for a 2x11 however I wasn't impressed.
I was good with Matthew’s for 1 year, but everyone saying Hughes and explaining that he can help shut down Bedard has me leaning towards Hughes now. You GOTTA sign Vesce right now. Don’t give him the opportunity to go up to 14+ million per year Remember to only sign someone to a long term extension if you’re going to keep them. You don’t want to give another team a very friendly contract deal.

I think give Vesce 8x12.5... as he doesnt want an extension and if he rejects the 8x12, he could ask for 15m instead of 13. Then, I say wait for Kurtz & Kurri, their offers during the season could be better, maybe something like a 6x7 and 6x4.5. Nabokov looks like you could sign him long term.
Absolutely go for Hughes, Matthews could mess with the production of the top 6. Defense wins championships… especially when you already have a franchise player.
Go for Hughes, you have two bona fide 90+ overall forwards already but your blue line barely has high 80s. The team needs some balance - there's only so much firepower you’re gonna get from your forward line before your weak blue line just becomes impossible to carry to a Stanley cup.
I think that one reason for the amount of penalties taken, especially by Stone and Kurri, is their skating stats. Both of them have terribly low speed, acceleration, agility, etc., even though their discipline is in the high 80s or 90s. For example, Marchand has very low discipline, but his skating is still pretty good, so along with his poise and off&def awareness, he's going to sim really well. Stone also has really good awareness and poise so he'll keep racking up points, its just he takes a lot of penalties because of his skating. You also had a very unfortunate simulation, so maybe I'm completely wrong, but this is just something I've noticed in GM modes.
Hey Johnny, first time commenting here but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents regarding Mathews vs Hughes. I know you want Mathews, but I would strongly recommend targeting Quinn Hughes instead for a few reasons. Firstly, I’m worried that adding Mathews could do more harm than good in the long run for Vesce’s development. Yes I know he just won the cup, but he did that surrounded by 2 elite playmakers. I’m not sure he would find the same success with Vesce who barely gets any assists. They’d cannabalize each others shots and I think both of them would end up having down seasons (by their standards) as a result. Also you already have a second elite goal scorer in Laine. I’m not sure adding another top tier sniper would do much to improve the offense since you already have guys who can get 40-50+ on the first and second lines. Hughes, on the other hand, would only improve the performance of your forwards in my opinion. Look at the seasons Adam Fox has been having for the rangers and imagine a defensemen of his caliber quarterbacking the PP for Vesce and Laine. I think Fox is the biggest reason the rangers have been so good on the PP (I think they were above 30% but you might have to fact check me on that) Also look at the sustained team success the rangers have had, they’ve been competing for the presidents trophy every year of the save, and again I think Fox has a ton to do with that. Finally, Hughes could help shore up some of the defensive shortcomings of the team and help you keep the puck out of the net, which as we saw is gonna be key in the playoffs against top tier forwards like Bedard, Mackinnon, Mcdavid etc. For Al those reasons I’d recommend targeting Hughes, potentially even looking to lock him up long term and maybe moving on from a Chychrun. I know you like the idea of team America but Hughes would be far better in both the short and long term for the team than Chychrun IMO. If you do still want to bring in a forward for the first line to pair with Cooley and Vesce instead of Mathews I’d recommend targeting a playmaker who still shoots the puck quite a bit a la Nathan Mackinnon (although obviously whoever you get wouldn’t be that good, just similar stylistically) I’d recommend Buchnevich, look at the season he had next to Crosby, but I’ll leave it to the courts to find another player in a similar mold. Apologies for the long post but just wanted to throw my hat in the ring. Loving the content Johnny and I’ll keep watching regardless of who you end up targeting.

I honestly think Quinn Hughes helps both sides of the ice way more than Auston Matthews does. Hughes is another elite playmaker to pair with Vesce, while Matthews would take some of the shot totals away from Vesce. Hughes would give you one year of the best blue line in the NHL, which Utah has never had. He'd help shut down Bedard way more than Matthews would in this sim, and Hughes could theoretically have a long-term home in Utah after this season depending on team success and whether he'd want an extension.
I’m in favor of Hughes over Matthews but if you want Matthews, I’d try to get him at 15m a yr and then sign Seider to help boost the defense. He won’t give you a ton of points but he solidifies a very strong defense that can shut other teams down
I know you want to give Matthews a max contract for the entertainment, but you could sign him at like 15.5-16 and still have some space to get another good player. I wouldn’t give him an extra 4 million just for fun.
Not gonna lie dude, you got EA'd. This game's playoff simulation has a hard on for wild card teams and always gives them a boost in the playoff sim. Throw that into the mix and the fact that the Hawks had a decent roster to play with, it just spells disaster for you as the player. This happens in so many franchise mode years. Hell, your team did the same thing in the last year's playoff sim. Decent team that squeaks into the playoffs and torches the clearly superior divisional winner.
Bedard and Bear is going run this Universe for a decade. Poor Vesce got the usurped by Bear. Hopefully Vesce, goes into god mode the next season. "Bear? More like a teddy bear." Vesce after seeing Bear's film. Totally not jealous at all. Not at all.

You have 2 shot hog goal scorers, see what Quinn wants for 1 year (it will be way less than 17M) give him $3M over asking and you will get him to make your PP, PK, and 5 on 5 way better. You could also trade Werenski and Macelli for a playmaking sniper to play with Cooley and Vesce
Hughes should definitely be the priority! Need an elite defenseman against a team like Chicago! If you can though, try to get both Hughes and Matthews as some other people are suggesting and create one of the greatest teams of all time, even if it's just for one year.

Hey John, I've tended to have success with having a bona fide offensive defenceman. They tend to help your offensive players, your powerplay, and the high overall is also a great thing in the real time sims. When you look at your team, you are missing a genuine elite defenceman, but you have a few forwards who are elite in overall and some who simulate at close to that level also. For me, Hughes is a missing piece that will likely greatly help the Yetis. Matthews is Matthews, you can't deny it, but what he brings you already have some degree of. The same can't be said for Hughes. You've got some firepower up front already and having Hughes on the back end will help improve that while also massively improving your defensive side of things. At the end of the day, you seem to be enjoying this series a lot and it's mutual. Cheers from a 36 year old who enjoys the entertainment you provide.

In my opinion, hughes is the pick. Kurtz can become expendable at that point because he doesn't want to resign, and even if you resign him, he wants tons of money for being 84 overall. We are still not sure if he grows to that top 2 defenseman to eventually replace werenski.

Hughes is also American so there's team America with that too. IMO Quinn is the way to go for one year as he will not only help out defensively to stop bedard, but also help to put up more goals on them too.
When signing FA, look at what the player wants each year (1 year deal, 2 year deal, etc etc). Often youll find deals for short term deals. Do not pay guys $20 million for one bloody season. And ALWAYS wait until the preseason for resigning extensions. Its always lower.
I pulled a superbman and traded 5 firsts for a franchise player, won the RoY playing with another rookie on his line who was the second best rookie and lost in the cup finals, ended up being an 88 after the season started at an 81

Hey Johnny, here is how I understand NHL's Potential system works:
When it says low, medium, or high, this is the chance that players will grow and its determined when they are created. High players will grow more often than medium or low, but like you saw with gonchar and nabokov, its not a certainty.
What this means, if a player grows he will continue to grow. so you can go look around the league for low elite players who have tradable value and then look at their simulated production, if its grows year over year they are a prospect with upswing value.
Ive done a lot of gm modes John and in the playoffs I’ve felt having a few high overall 2 way forwards sprinkled in the top 6 helps the real time sim A LOT. Because they play well defensively they can make up for a weak d core and help shutdown the other teams offensive studs, I know you have Marchand and stone but the top 6 is all offensive guys (snipers playmaker and vesce is a defensive liability with all his PIMS) which could be why Bedard played insane and u went out.
I know it sucks Johnny but the only way I know to full uncover players in the draft is to discover 1)player type 2)strengths and weaknesses 3)skills assessment and then 4)potential and comparison

Hey John, so you can go into edit player and the stat that says willingness to fight under their information like height and birthplace is actually the chance they take penalties! Either you can mix in a special work around where you say we’ll take one player a year and bump down his willingness to fight like you have a meeting with him in real life. Or you can maybe trade players with a high chance of fighting since they are just gonna kill you during the playoffs! I bet Kurri has a high willingness to fight. Also check their discipline stat too! Love the content keep it up!
Only thing is in a fight both players get 5 mins so neither team gets a power play

I would suggest going after Seider. Your problem in the playoffs was goals against and he is a big 2-way defenseman who will shut down and wear down the other teams stars. Plus, he's only asking for 8.75 over 3 years. Then your defensive core looks like Werenski and Seider, Chychrun and Kurtz, then Lindstein (who had a bunch of PIMs in the playoffs) can play on the 3rd pairing to limit his PIMs
If you're deciding between the two, Hughes is the way to go. You're going to get more natural growth from Vesce who could end up being the 96 OVR that you need come playoffs. Hughes would be long and away your best defenceman and would not only give you more flexibility on the backend, but would also give Kurtz the best possible partner to play with for his growth. For me, Hughes is the obvious choice.
Quinn is an absolute cheat code in this game. Can easily put up over a ppg especially with the two lethal shooters on utahs powerplay. Pay anything for that guy. Don’t need Matthews, vesce is the franchise shooter
This is exactly what happens in my Franchise modes as well. players coming and going, ad star RFA not wanting to sign... crazy hard to keep everything together if you don't pick the game apart yourself. the game never tells you what to do, hiding eveyrthing.
You’re going to have to put Hynes as the AHL backup this year and hope he grows. Even if you left him unsigned, there was a great chance he’d be a low enough overall to not garner a huge contract after his ELC. I would load up your AHL squad with higher overall league min players to help him out this next season.
Johnny, whatever big fish you reel in, sign them to a 2 year deal and flip them for some assets at next years draft.
Imagine the storyline, you sign matthews to a 2 year deal then send him to the team with the first overall pick next year or something like that so they’ll be going into the following season with the number 1 pick and Auston matthews

i know the big signing super team deal is tempting...but what is the real problem with the team?? it's not goal scoring, it's not the power play, it's really not even the pk...besides the salary cap, it's keeping the puck out of the net 5v5 (and shutting down Bedard)...we've been down this road before with the flashy goalies and their high overalls, but any goalie with the right team in front of them can have a .910 or better season, at half the price of swayman. (i really dont like goalie contracts)...that would cut some cap issues by trading swayman and going after a stud defender and a leget defender to beef up the blue line...the boys need some help back there so they don't look bad...thats why they don't want to sign extensions lol let mathews go...i know it's hard but youll be better off for it next year, and maybe Vesce will change his mind about that extension...then again, if he has a good year, he's going to want more...tough choices ahead for sure

Hey Johnny you didn't know what to do after line changes and it didn't really affect your real time sim after crushing game 3. I think what you should have changed is your team strategies. Beginning of each round of the playoffs, I look in the standings the team I'm up against and see which approach defensive or an offensive is the best game plan. I think EA sees you kept your same strat from the regular season so it's easier for them to make it tougher for your team getting to next round.

Regarding the penalties, i read on the EA Sports NHL boards that this isnt an isolated issue. Check your settings, its recommended you lower the player penalties that you take to about 25%, & lower the computer's penalties to 50%. This apparently is a more accurate PIM scale, it goes to about 50-50 as opposed to hoe you were wrecked by the refs vs Chicago. It worked for me through a couple of my sims, even though i was still being penalized slightly more than the computer, but the parity was FAR closer. Just a thought.

Johnny it would be interesting if you brough Matthews for that big one year contract while also maybe considering bring in Kadri as an assistant or associate coach. Usually Kadri is a B- to B coach so he could work. However for Matthews even if you signed him it doesn't guarantee that he'll want an extension while there's also the fact that your gonna have to sign Vesce to an extension. Depending on how much extension dollars you'll have left you might only get Matthews for one season unless they both reasonably sign extensions at the right price. I know from experience as I did a Nashville Predators Franchise where I trade for and extended Mitch Marner, when I did at first he wanted to extend as I paid him 7x11.5, however once his contract was up he didn't want an extension which resulted in him wanting 12.5 million for a 3 years for at 34 year old, I was able to negotiate with him for a 2x11 however I wasn't impressed.

Go for Hughes, you have two bona fide 90+ overall forwards already but your blue line barely has high 80s. The team needs some balance - there's only so much firepower you’re gonna get from your forward line before your weak blue line just becomes impossible to carry to a Stanley cup.

I think that one reason for the amount of penalties taken, especially by Stone and Kurri, is their skating stats. Both of them have terribly low speed, acceleration, agility, etc., even though their discipline is in the high 80s or 90s. For example, Marchand has very low discipline, but his skating is still pretty good, so along with his poise and off&def awareness, he's going to sim really well. Stone also has really good awareness and poise so he'll keep racking up points, its just he takes a lot of penalties because of his skating. You also had a very unfortunate simulation, so maybe I'm completely wrong, but this is just something I've noticed in GM modes.
Hey Johnny, first time commenting here but I wanted to throw in my 2 cents regarding Mathews vs Hughes. I know you want Mathews, but I would strongly recommend targeting Quinn Hughes instead for a few reasons. Firstly, I’m worried that adding Mathews could do more harm than good in the long run for Vesce’s development. Yes I know he just won the cup, but he did that surrounded by 2 elite playmakers. I’m not sure he would find the same success with Vesce who barely gets any assists. They’d cannabalize each others shots and I think both of them would end up having down seasons (by their standards) as a result. Also you already have a second elite goal scorer in Laine. I’m not sure adding another top tier sniper would do much to improve the offense since you already have guys who can get 40-50+ on the first and second lines. Hughes, on the other hand, would only improve the performance of your forwards in my opinion. Look at the seasons Adam Fox has been having for the rangers and imagine a defensemen of his caliber quarterbacking the PP for Vesce and Laine. I think Fox is the biggest reason the rangers have been so good on the PP (I think they were above 30% but you might have to fact check me on that) Also look at the sustained team success the rangers have had, they’ve been competing for the presidents trophy every year of the save, and again I think Fox has a ton to do with that. Finally, Hughes could help shore up some of the defensive shortcomings of the team and help you keep the puck out of the net, which as we saw is gonna be key in the playoffs against top tier forwards like Bedard, Mackinnon, Mcdavid etc. For Al those reasons I’d recommend targeting Hughes, potentially even looking to lock him up long term and maybe moving on from a Chychrun. I know you like the idea of team America but Hughes would be far better in both the short and long term for the team than Chychrun IMO. If you do still want to bring in a forward for the first line to pair with Cooley and Vesce instead of Mathews I’d recommend targeting a playmaker who still shoots the puck quite a bit a la Nathan Mackinnon (although obviously whoever you get wouldn’t be that good, just similar stylistically) I’d recommend Buchnevich, look at the season he had next to Crosby, but I’ll leave it to the courts to find another player in a similar mold. Apologies for the long post but just wanted to throw my hat in the ring. Loving the content Johnny and I’ll keep watching regardless of who you end up targeting.

I honestly think Quinn Hughes helps both sides of the ice way more than Auston Matthews does. Hughes is another elite playmaker to pair with Vesce, while Matthews would take some of the shot totals away from Vesce. Hughes would give you one year of the best blue line in the NHL, which Utah has never had. He'd help shut down Bedard way more than Matthews would in this sim, and Hughes could theoretically have a long-term home in Utah after this season depending on team success and whether he'd want an extension.
I’m in favor of Hughes over Matthews but if you want Matthews, I’d try to get him at 15m a yr and then sign Seider to help boost the defense. He won’t give you a ton of points but he solidifies a very strong defense that can shut other teams down

I know you want to give Matthews a max contract for the entertainment, but you could sign him at like 15.5-16 and still have some space to get another good player. I wouldn’t give him an extra 4 million just for fun.
Not gonna lie dude, you got EA'd. This game's playoff simulation has a hard on for wild card teams and always gives them a boost in the playoff sim. Throw that into the mix and the fact that the Hawks had a decent roster to play with, it just spells disaster for you as the player. This happens in so many franchise mode years.
Hell, your team did the same thing in the last year's playoff sim. Decent team that squeaks into the playoffs and torches the clearly superior divisional winner.
