I love this. Sweeney is so bland in this because this has become normal for him. This is his normal. Mrs. Lovett is all over the place because she's never done something like this before so she's on her nerves there but also because her business is about to boom. The direction of this number is absolutely genius.
It's the same in every version I've ever seen, and there's an internal logic to it. The characters are imagining, so they don't need props. Great version!
The performance of Caroline O'Connor in this part is the finest I have seen. Her timing, her vibratto, her body, facial and hand business and gestures are superb, whilst her accent is brilliant - all are parts of a performance a producer/director cannot teach....it's all about feeling the part. It's simple really, Miss O'Connor is a sensation.....pick the bones outa that!
A semi-catatonic Sweeney might be a legitimate interpretation--he's obsessed, interior, quietly nursing vengeance--but does it work? She is a revelation--wish I'd been there--great comic timing, accent, inhabits the character. (Though a few of her gestures--was it the direction?--seem anachronistically contemporary, and break the illusion).
That Sweeney WAS a little stiff, but I've got to say, his voice more than makes up for it. And Miss O'Connor, need I say more? Amazing performance overall.
Caroline is sensational as ever here, though I'm a little baffled they are having to "mime" props, because they don't have any!! Is this the French way of doing things?!?
Shes a very good singer but a few things... Sweeney has like NO emotion, i know the main focus is her but i mean c'mon dude! She messed up the first line pretty much too if anyone has seen the original one with Angela & Gorge you know what i mean & she acted a little spazzy Mrs.Lovett is a little hyper & kooky but not spazzy so yeah those are my comments haha
I totally agree. I have seen her in Mack And Mabel, On The Town and The Rink...all in London and like her generally but this performance looks too wild and not controlled. Some of her physical gestures were odd and laughs fell flat.

Utterly brilliant...such fortunate to have seen it from the nosebleeder section, extraordinary.

God, Caroline, that was good. I so loved your performance in Sweeney Todd. You were born for this part !
I do believe it was intentional! That Sweeney is played by Rod Gilfry, he's really an extraordinary performer!
very good interpretation right here!
Thank you so much for posting this wonderful version
I am truly in awe of Ms O'Connor & can't wait to see her perform this in Australia
( soon I hope)
Wow, great performance!

I love love love Caroline O'Connor!!! I'm pretty sure she can do no wrong.
Why is she doing Sweeney Todd with Lurch from the Addams Family?

I'm sure it isn't like that in the current London version I saw recently...
