Love the videos a lot I always want to upgrade my older MAME and ROMS, but it always seems to create a bunch of duplicate playlists and such. Would love to see an upgrade video for MAME.

I suggest making a new version of this video and include where to put chd files (or recommended/best practice for that) and maybe even cover the differences between split, merged, non-merged romsets etc. and why someone might want to use each. Then also include going into Mame itself and telling it where the chd files are (assuming that is a needed step to get CHD games working in Mame through Launchbox (I'm not sure if it is as I'm just about to get mine setup and haven't done it yet).
A handful of arcade games in MAME such as Metal Slug have a lot of slowdowns unless you use the option within MAME once the game is running to "overclock" the CPU. The problem is MAME does not allow you to save this setting so you have to do it every single time you start a game. My question - is there a script or some other method that once a game is loaded it would automatically set the CPU to 200% or maybe a script that you could do an easy button combination on a controller or keyboard which would trigger the system to set the CPU to 200% ?
For 3 years now I try to get my arcade to run, and finally after switching from HyperSpin/RochetLauncher to Launchbox it's so much easier. Got myslf BigBox and EmuMovies and its absolutely amazing! Thanks to your videos I got so much further than with the old setup. One big question remains. I try to get as many systems as possible to run with RetroArch since you can have amazing shaders with it. I am using the MegaBezel pack. I see, that the LaunchBox import for MAME is very well made and it just works so I want to do it this way. Is it possible to also get the amazing shaders from RetroArch for MAME? That would make the immersion perfect for MAME as well.
Just got back to setting up my gaming computer with Launchbox. Which shaders do you like from RetroArch? HyperSpin was hell compared to this. I remember a lot of hours going in to setting it up, downloading images, and setting path/names to all match. I still have two arcades that use HyperSpin, but they do not receive any updates so they still work great.
@@woosdom I havent had the time to use it much lately. But I love the one, that simulates the curvature of an old glass display and there was one which had a bezel around the outside that even reflects the content of the monitor. Hope that explains it well.
Hi another great video, I have Mame up & running, one question I was wondering if you install the Mame 0.240 full split set do you need the 0.240 chd files as well? I am now a premium member with emu movies and the bezel project & I have to say this is an amazing piece of software, long live Launchbox !!
Also if you delete the command -nofilter from the "-artwork_crop -skip_gameinfo -waitvsync -nofilter -keyboardprovider dinput -rompath %romlocation%" it will make the games look better and not all pixelated and sharp.. you get to this by clicking Tools/Manage emulators
I just discovered though that if you use the full set importer and the set you have is not complete, it will just add missing games to your library anyway. I figured this out when i went to export a curated list weeding out all of the fruit, trivia, etc. It says i've got 2300 games in my library but only exports 1600. It shouldn't import games that aren't there. Very confusing.
I have a problem, found a good rom set on a certain archive website. But cannot download as its too many files for "zip on the fly"? is this a problem with my zip program or what?

Been having trouble getting roms to boot and run after getting and installing everything. Lunchbox looks neat. Might pay for big box if I can just get the darn thing to work
If I was looking for the ROM set, I might do, I don't know, a Google search for something like MAME 0.240 full rom set and see what I find. There might be an 'internet archive' link ending in org that you can easily find the roms, bios, chd's, artwork, everything you could possibly want and or need. Then you just need to use something like "DownThemAll!" to grab them easily. You can pretty much find every set you want this way. Google is a great tool.

Hey... had a question.... So lets say I imported last months set and have all the media downloaded and now a month later I have the new set. Do I deleted the old set and then do a full install again or what is the best option to update every month on new release sets
can you use this with incomplete rom sets? what happens if you try to use this method on an incomplete rom set does it simply import/recognize what is there or does it complain/not work?

When setting controls in MAME (by pressing TAB), remember to go into the option: Input (General). This will set controls for all your MAME games. Input (This Machine) will set controls for the specific game you are playing at that time.
You can right click any game, to check if there was a match with the LaunchBox GamesDB. If there wasn't you can always rename it and click on the "Search for Metadata" option. Once it's found a match, you can go to the Media sections and download media for that game.
The only option as far as i know up to this day ist DATvault from within ROMvault and you have to be patreon to get DATvault access. It updates all dat files to the newest version (supports almost every known romsets like redump, no-intro, fbneo, MAME, HBMAME, MAME SL, ...) and only processes changed/added roms and leaves unchanged as they are. No need to add a dat and rebuild the complete new romset from the old ones+fixes. I am almost forced to do it this way, since my rom collection is ~20TB. Building new romsets will take forever via network, even 10G.
Great video! But how do I get the games to run through retroarch, and use the mame core for the 0.240 romset? Is that even a thing?? I just prefer to use retroarch since all of the buttons are mapped out of the box.
While RetroArch is not recommended for Arcade games, and will break things like high score leaderboards, you can always switch the emulator for all your games after import by highlighting all your games, and using the Bulk Edit window to change which Emulator you'd like LaunchBox to use. Just make sure the RetroArch entry in LaunchBox is set up to specifically play Arcade games (by default it is not). You would probably want to set up a second RetroArch entry just for Arcade game configuration.
I have found that the only way that works consistently is to just move the CHDs over to the rom folder once the roms have been imported into launchbox. I have tried keeping them in separate folders and setting the correct paths within mame but LB always has trouble launching games that require CHDs unless they are in the same folder as the roms
Hi, thanks for all your hard work, you're my go to launchbox guy, I have a problem and I was wondering if you could help me? I'm using mame 2.4.1 with a couple of game and watch zips files ( they have the files inside ) however I can't get them to import as when I choose the roms and direct it to the mame/rom folder no zip files are there to import but if I exit launchbox and just use mame they're there and work fine, also is there any way to convert the zip files to a MGW file as I can't find the mario bros.widescreen / Crystal screen rom as MGW anywhere thanks
They can be tricky to import until you know the options. Use a ROM import, close to the end of the wizard choose to Force useing MAME metadata. Then on the metadata screen, choose to: Import all clones, Check None (of the skip options), and uncheck to create Playlists.
What if I don't want to import the full catalog? What if I just want to hand-pick like 50 titles so I don't have options paralysis? How do I go about importing individual titles?
I have the full set and emulator, but when I enter the main rom file, it doesn’t continue, as if their was no rom/ rom set. Do all games have to be unzipped? Or rename the file?
Hey i downloaded the 0.240 rom set along with the chd files both the roms and chd files are just over 600gb. You seem to only have the roms do chd files work with Launchbox?

CHD-s are just disk images. If you have the CHD-s in their respective directory within the directory of your roms, then the game will work.
some games such as Killer Instinct require the corresponding CHD to work. If you were only using MAME to launch games you could keep them in separate folders and set the paths within MAME settings, but for some reason that method does not work if you use LaunchBox. So for LaunchBox you need to move the CHDs over to the same folder that your ROMs are in. So for example - for the game Killer Instinct to load you would need: inside your mame rom folder - a ROM file called kinst.zip and then a folder called kinst with kinst.chd inside that folder.

You should place the CHD-s like this: roms\kinst\kinst.chd roms\kinst.zip (my previous reply was for some reason removed) You also have to ensure, that you are using the right CHD with the right rom. For example using the .237 CHD with the .240 rom might not work on a per game basis.
Sadly, this is not perfect. I done this yesterday and decided to give it a try today, so one of my test games is 10 Yard Fight, and the audio quality and the speed is rubbish. I just tried launching the game via MAME directly and that was a lot better, so something is wrong somewhere. The year is now 2023 when I done this on the latest version of BB as I only brought it on black Friday, and using Mame 0.258 I think it is. I will add, that I have now done this twice and I downloaded 0.260 and removed 258, the audio quality and stuttering is really bad. So sadly, this import is not out of the box, so some playing around is needed, just a shame as really this should be perfect.
If the steps were followed and you are unable to play, this points to either a missed step or something wrong with your full set files. I would recommend posting on the official forums for better support: forums.launchbox-app.com/
If you media is named after your ROM files, LaunchBox will read them, as long as you put into the correct media folders. Example: Box - Front images go into LaunchBox\Images\[platform]\Box - Front
The MAME Arcade Full Set Importer should only be used if you have downloaded a recent MAME full set and you know which version you've downloaded. One common mistake users have is that the wizard doesn't rely on your actual files, it parses a MAME xml file to import all games that are associated with that version of MAME. This may point to you not having the proper rom files necessary for this wizard to work. Without more info it would be hard to know for sure. I'd recommend heading to our forums for better troubleshooting support: forums.launchbox-app.com/
Hello, help please. So i downloaded mame 0.252 rom set then import it to launchbox as Full Set Import. Selected recommend download the necessary emulator and update for it. After downloaded, i tried running couple games, some of them just go on black screen then exit back to the main menu. As well with couple seconds black screen delay. Is there a better stable version of the rom set i should have got instead? Or should i have downloaded the emulator manually and import as Roms
Question. If I already have a full set of mame 0.267 and want to update to mame set 0.268 how do we do this? Without having to delete the old install and reimport net set?
You can re-run the MAME Fullset Importer. It will replace your games from 267 with 268, and update MAME for you. However, you may lose some custom metadata if done, so be warmed.

Yes. You would just use the regular ROM Import wizard. However, there could be some complications when hand picking roms. Best to make sure they are working inside of MAME before import.
i downloaded the nonag version 243 but x-men still showing the nag screen,did i miss something,i overwrite the previous exe as it mentioned on the video tutorial
ok. Silly question as I have used MAME for years but never really got a handle on BIOS files and should I copy the BIOS files to the ROMS directory and overwrite some of the duplicate ROM/BIOS files? Or have another directory for BIOS.
BIOS files need to go inside your ROM folder, they always come with a full MAME romset, so no need to go out and try to grab different BIOS files. This could actually cause problems doing it this way, as you need to make sure all files are coming from the same romset version.
Can you make a video How to set a TV as Primary Screen in BigBox? I go to BigBox Options and I set my TV as Primary Screen. When I launch Arcade game. MAME was opened on my PC Monitor instead of my TV. Even make my TV as Primary Monitor in Windows 10 Settings won't help ether.
The auto-generated playlists will appear in LaunchBox and Big Box when you are under the Platform Categories section. The Platform Categories section is designed to be flexible and modular. The auto-generated playlists is just the start of what can be done in this section. Good luck.

Arcade games are a finicky thing. There are a lot of variables that can end up going wrong if you don't really know what you are doing. I'd recommend posting on the forums on what exactly you did, laying out exactly what kind of MAME set you have, how you imported them into LB, and the process you went through to export to Android, etc. The more info the better, and screenshots help a lot: forums.launchbox-app.com/
Sounds like you are trying to use the full set importer without having a full set. You should use the ROM importer if you just want to import a select number of MAME games.
Unfortunately, no. This import wizard will not work with those old reference sets. You'll want to use the ROM import wizard for sets that old, or upgrade to a newer set.
There's a number of ways to do this, depending on your needs. You can use the on-the-fly filter button to filter by series. You can use the filter dropdown to switch to publisher, developer, series, platform categories and a number of others. You can also get LaunchBox to automatically generate playlists (or create your own dynamic playlists) that will create sub-categories under the Arcade Category, for things like genres, number of players, developers... etc.
LaunchBox tries hard not to import the same games twice, to keep your library nice and tidy. However, you can bypass this. Import one of the sets (maybe the older one), using the ROM Import wizard, and using a different paltform name (remembering to set a scrap as value). Then choose the option to "Force importing duplicate games" and "Force using MAME metadata".
@@UnbrokenSoftwareLLC I have the chd files in a different folder. I set up mame with multiple rompaths, which works just fine. (standalone) I am pretty sure Launchbox had no issues before, but with the latest version it seems not possible anymore with multi rompaths. I tried your solution, I just added "Killer Instinct" chd file in the "main" ROM folder and it worked. So yes I could move my whole chd collection in my main ROM folder. 🥲
If you used the newer MAME fullset importer that was added back in January, then you will need to either add multiple paths to your MAME emulator entry inside of LaunchBox, or delete the path that's already in there. You'll notice inside of your Default Command-line Parameters for MAME, that we add '-rompath %romlocation%', this uses the path you set in LaunchBox. You could either remove this (which will then fallback to what you have set in MAME), or add to it, something like '-rompath %romlocation%;C:\Path\To\CHD\'
I import Mame romset 0.246, and it didn't show the games like KOF XI even if they are in the folder of the roms, what I have to do for launchbox can show those games?
Do you know if MAME can run that game? MAME includes more non-working games than working, so you may want to check. By default, LaunchBox filters out non-working games, and while you can change it to accept them, not sure why you would want to, as then you'd end up with a bunch of games that don't work through MAME. Run the import wizard again, pointing to your new set, should be all that's required.

I know right. Sonce emulators are legal. Telling people where to get roms should be legal as well. Makes no sense.

Can you delete the games out of the mameset that you dont need? i only like a handfull of games and like to delete the ones i dont use to save space.
This depends on the set that you have. Most sets have dependencies to other files within the same folder, so you would have to be careful.

CHD-s are just disk images. If you have the CHD-s in their respective directory within the directory of your roms, then the game will work.
@ Sorry to bug you, but I only found the ROMs and CHDs separately. Could you please give an example of how the layout should be?
some games such as Killer Instinct require the corresponding CHD to work. If you were only using MAME to launch games you could keep them in separate folders and set the paths within MAME settings, but for some reason that method does not work if you use LaunchBox. So for LaunchBox you need to move the CHDs over to the same folder that your ROMs are in. So for example - for the game Killer Instinct to load you would need: inside your mame rom folder - a ROM file called kinst.zip and then a folder called kinst with kinst.chd inside that folder.

You also have to ensure, that you are using the right CHD with the right rom. For example using the .237 CHD with the .240 rom might not work on a per game basis.

Sadly, this is not perfect. I done this yesterday and decided to give it a try today, so one of my test games is 10 Yard Fight, and the audio quality and the speed is rubbish. I just tried launching the game via MAME directly and that was a lot better, so something is wrong somewhere. The year is now 2023 when I done this on the latest version of BB as I only brought it on black Friday, and using Mame 0.258 I think it is. I will add, that I have now done this twice and I downloaded 0.260 and removed 258, the audio quality and stuttering is really bad. So sadly, this import is not out of the box, so some playing around is needed, just a shame as really this should be perfect.

If you media is named after your ROM files, LaunchBox will read them, as long as you put into the correct media folders. Example: Box - Front images go into LaunchBox\Images\[platform]\Box - Front

The MAME Arcade Full Set Importer should only be used if you have downloaded a recent MAME full set and you know which version you've downloaded. One common mistake users have is that the wizard doesn't rely on your actual files, it parses a MAME xml file to import all games that are associated with that version of MAME. This may point to you not having the proper rom files necessary for this wizard to work. Without more info it would be hard to know for sure. Hello, help please.
So i downloaded mame 0.252 rom set then import it to launchbox as Full Set Import. Selected recommend download the necessary emulator and update for it. After downloaded, i tried running couple games, some of them just go on black screen then exit back to the main menu. As well with couple seconds black screen delay.
Is there a better stable version of the rom set i should have got instead?
Or should i have downloaded the emulator manually and import as Roms
Question. If I already have a full set of mame 0.267 and want to update to mame set 0.268 how do we do this? Without having to delete the old install and reimport net set?
You can re-run the MAME Fullset Importer. It will replace your games from 267 with 268, and update MAME for you. However, you may lose some custom metadata if done, so be warmed.
What do we select if we dont know what rom set we have?
I did this full set importer, but when I launch an arcade game I get the loading graphics for it, but then MAME fails to launch. Any advice?

Yes. You would just use the regular ROM Import wizard. However, there could be some complications when hand picking roms. Best to make sure they are working inside of MAME before import.
What type do you use on mame? Merged, non merged or split
I use merged for years now. Dont see a reason to use the other two. Saves space.

ok. Silly question as I have used MAME for years but never really got a handle on BIOS files and should I copy the BIOS files to the ROMS directory and overwrite some of the duplicate ROM/BIOS files? Or have another directory for BIOS.
BIOS files need to go inside your ROM folder, they always come with a full MAME romset, so no need to go out and try to grab different BIOS files. This could actually cause problems doing it this way, as you need to make sure all files are coming from the same romset version.

I go to BigBox Options and I set my TV as Primary Screen. When I launch Arcade game. MAME was opened on my PC Monitor instead of my TV. Even make my TV as Primary Monitor in Windows 10 Settings won't help ether.

Yes, but only with non-merged sets. Anything else and you'll leave behind files.

Arcade games are a finicky thing. There are a lot of variables that can end up going wrong if you don't really know what you are doing. I'd recommend posting on the forums on what exactly you did, laying out exactly what kind of MAME set you have, how you imported them into LB, and the process you went through to export to Android, etc. The more info the better, and screenshots help a lot: forums.launchbox-app.com/

Sounds like you are trying to use the full set importer without having a full set. You should use the ROM importer if you just want to import a select number of MAME games.

This is not something we currently have, but may be something we can add in future updates depending on whether that metric is available.
Can this work using older version romsets from 2003 and 2010? I don't see an option to select these in the importer dropdown.
Unfortunately, no. This import wizard will not work with those old reference sets. You'll want to use the ROM import wizard for sets that old, or upgrade to a newer set.

If you need to adjust controller mapping for MAME, launch a game and press TAB to open the MAME menu.
But do I have to map every single game individually isn't there a way I can map all of the games at once it's so frustrating

LaunchBox has no bearing on your game specific controls. You can configure this from within MAME's GUI.
How to separate games by category, series or company?
There's a number of ways to do this, depending on your needs. You can use the on-the-fly filter button to filter by series. You can use the filter dropdown to switch to publisher, developer, series, platform categories and a number of others. You can also get LaunchBox to automatically generate playlists (or create your own dynamic playlists) that will create sub-categories under the Arcade Category, for things like genres, number of players, developers... etc.
May I import 2 different versions of MAME, say 0.200 & 0.240?
LaunchBox tries hard not to import the same games twice, to keep your library nice and tidy. However, you can bypass this. Import one of the sets (maybe the older one), using the ROM Import wizard, and using a different paltform name (remembering to set a scrap as value). Then choose the option to "Force importing duplicate games" and "Force using MAME metadata".

You can get most things going with a full merged rom set.
How do I add CHD roms?
CHD files are extensions of your ROMs and should be placed inside of your ROM folder.

I set up mame with multiple rompaths, which works just fine. (standalone)
I am pretty sure Launchbox had no issues before, but with the latest version it seems not possible anymore with multi rompaths.
I tried your solution, I just added "Killer Instinct" chd file in the "main" ROM folder and it worked.
So yes I could move my whole chd collection in my main ROM folder. 🥲
If you used the newer MAME fullset importer that was added back in January, then you will need to either add multiple paths to your MAME emulator entry inside of LaunchBox, or delete the path that's already in there. You'll notice inside of your Default Command-line Parameters for MAME, that we add '-rompath %romlocation%', this uses the path you set in LaunchBox. You could either remove this (which will then fallback to what you have set in MAME), or add to it, something like '-rompath %romlocation%;C:\Path\To\CHD\'

Do you know if MAME can run that game? MAME includes more non-working games than working, so you may want to check. By default, LaunchBox filters out non-working games, and while you can change it to accept them, not sure why you would want to, as then you'd end up with a bunch of games that don't work through MAME.
