- A tribute to Starfleet's most successful, majestic and time-proven design - the Excelsior class - also known as "The Queen of Space", "The Great Experiment" and "the Super-Starship."
87 years in service and still looking great and kicking ass.
In the late 24th century, this ship still represents the bulk of the fleet. A notable mention to Admiral Hansen's USS Melbourne for being the Federation's flagship during the Wolf 359 massacre.
The tech upgrades as seen on the USS Lakota easily makes these ships more than a match for the newer starship designs and surely guarantees another century of flawless service.
The new CBS Trek series could've given this class of starship another chance at glory had it been set in the post-TMP, pre-TNG era. But with over 60-odd appearances on the large and small screen, Excelsior class ships have been given FAR more screen time than any other non-hero starships.
Clips taken from: Star Trek III, Star Trek IV, Star Trek V, Star Trek VI, Star Trek VII, Star Trek The Next Generation, Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek Voyager.
Notable Excelsior class ships include the: USS Excelsior (NX/NCC-2000), USS Enterprise-B, USS Hood, USS Melbourne, USS Crazy Horse, USS Berlin, USS Lakota, USS Malinche, USS Farragut, USS Cairo, USS Charleston, USS Intrepid, USS Fearless, USS Valley Forge, USS Fredrickson, USS Gorkon, USS Potemkin, USS Repulse, USS Al-Batani, USS Atlantis, USS Crockett, USS Dallas, USS Grissom, USS Okinawa, USS Livingston, USS Tecumseh, USS Sarek and USS Roosevelt.
The Excelsior was my favorite design in all of trek. Sleek. Powerful. Majestic. That was a beautiful ship
⛑️⛽⛽⛽⛽⛽⛽⛽📚🎤⛹️🏅🚅🤙
The Excelsior Class was such a big deal for a while. Up until then we had really only seen The Enterprise and its design copied for other constitution class ships. In TOS we had no other types of federation vessel save for shuttles and some old earth ships. We obviously had seen Reliant from TWOK but that was a different ship but around the same generation as The Enterprise. So The Excelsior was the first time that the Producers of Star Trek were going to show a ship that represented progress in this universe. The Excelsior would be the launching point for every ship from here on that would represent technological progress. I think they did a great job.
What about Oberth? We saw that, too in Star Trek III.
@@Gentleman...Driver I don't think a war canoe represents progress
Yeah i imagine people lost their minds when they saw this thing for the first time. She’s a LOOOOOOOOONG beast.
Vulcan warp sled in TMP (admittedly not much bigger than the shuttle it carried), and the Bonaventure and the Huron in TAS - but yes, the Excelsior (along with the Grissom, just maybe), were the first 'advancements' we'd seen beyond the refit Constitution and the very-closely-related Miranda-class Reliant.

This is one of the greatest videos ever made. I get goosebumps every single time.
THIS IS WHAT STAR TREK IS ABOUT.
THANK YOU EXCELSIOR!!!!!!!!!
A true workhorse class, who outlasted older and later designs, and a truly beautiful design, suggesting speed and grace.
In stark contrast to the Miranda-class; the ship that just wouldn't retire, despite sucking hard at almost everything that involved interstellar travel.
@@hobomike6935 - the California class says hold my beer.
I can tell a lot of love went into this, thank you for uploading.
Absolutely love the elegance of this design, still my favorite Starfleet vessel
I had a mini-record picture book of The Search for Spock. I stared at both Enterprise and Excelsior forever. I was such a young child. Enterprise felt like home…battered as she was. But Excelsior…she was majestic and I appreciated every aesthetic aspect of her. She felt like technical evolution, not superseding, but rather adjacent, to the spectacle of Enterprise.
Still my favorite class.
Good shot selection and editing to music.
Same here. May not be as "sleek" or as "sharp" as the Sovereign or the Prometheus, but IMO the Excelsior is far classier than either of those. The design is simply unmatched. Literally fell in love with the ship when I first saw in in ST: The Search for Spock. Some 32 years after the starship first appeared and I still think it's the most noble-looking space faring vessel in sci-fi.
Someone once called it Starfleet's cruise liner and now that's all I see, looks like pure elegance and luxury.
well said
@@FederationStarfleet it's a vessel for the ages just a shame they didn't think at StarFleet that the Connie could have been refitted more
I like it to. It reminds me of my fathers old 76 Buick park avenue gas hog.
They should do a series about an Excelsior Class ship, like the USS Fearless. Every season would be like another decade in the history of the ship. Like Season 1 would be the end of the 23rd century. Then moving on in Season 2 to the early 24th century. All the way up to the Dominion War and beyond. That would be so cool and show how those ships carried Starfleet for over 100 years. They could also show how it was refitted several times. I really like my idea. :)))
Keep this in your notes, fandom will make it possible. This is a great pitch meeting idea.
@@kawafahra I dont have any hopes for that since all the fandom films are not allowed to make any profit because of copyright. They wouldnt be able to use any of the Star Trek trademark properties.
They couldnt afford any good effects and they would have to alternate all the properties to a point where its not Star Trek anymore.
I also dont think that CBS would adopt my idea, since all the Star Trek is focused on one cast. Castings are expensive. So if you had to do this for each season it would get quite expensive.
But the idea is cool and I would love to see that.
Leaves much room for good stories.
Pre-refit Excelsior is truly a beauty...
Excelsior class survived into the 24th Century. Talk about a very well crafted ship. Great vid. Kudos.

don't Forget Righteous. Also imagine if Starfleet manage to upgrade all Excelsiors to Lakota Specs before the Dominion War happened.
Are you sure that the excelsior class has seen the most screen time? I personally think that there are more Miranda-class ships that we see than Excelsior-class vessels.
Music fits.

My personal favourite part of this fantastic video was the squaring off of what could possibly be Star Trek's two greatest and longest-serving designs, Excelsior and K'Tinga. I think that more than any other, those two ships are the most iconic of their cultures. The perennial backbones of the Federation Starfleet and Klingon Defence Force.
Technically, the Miranda and the Oberth served longer in continuous duty than the Excelsior, but Excelsior is my favorite.
I command Valley Forge (NCC-43305) in Star Trek Online, and for a good reason! The Excelsior-class has always been my favorite Starfleet vessel
From looking at various beta canon sources, one reason for its longevity is the fact it was developed as a testbed, which means it was designed to allow for easy adaptations and modifications of its propulsion and other systems. That ease of upgrade, repair and maintenance, together with an optimal combination of crew size, warp geometry, and endurance, and being launched into a period of relative peace, meant that lots of Excelsior class ships were built to serve in a phase of expansion and then were kept around due to ease of upgrade, in lieu of a wholesale replacement with "inter-series" classes like Ambassador.
This in turn meant that the class had a real nostalgia factor for Admirals, who invariably chose them as their "runabouts".
I also tend to imagine that they were built with excellent flag facilities as standard, possibly even a separate flag bridge with full com links and direct sensor feeds.
That’s always been my thought as well, though I didn’t know Beta actually said much the same
That was really well put together, well done. Excelsior and the Refit is my favorite class in all starship.
Same but I think constitution 2 is best
Sovereign-class and Akira-class FTW! but Excelsior-class was a great one. :)
This video shows that, above all, you just can't beat physical models. So epic, you really feel the size and power
Agreed 😊
Was always amazed at how long the Excelsior Class star ships remained in service at Starfleet. This becomes apparent when you see Dr. McCoy make a guest appearance in the first series of Star Trek: The Next Generation. 🙂👌🏾
Not to mention the fact that the Excelsior class continued playing a most prominent role throughout the course of the DS9/Voyager era. As seen during the battle of the Lakota vs the Defiant, Excelsior class ships were still a match for much much newer combat-oriented designs.
next to the Galaxy-class, the venerable workhorse of the fleet is my favourite! and im still more partial to the original version than the refit
An amazing design, both visually and functionally - truly fit to be the workhorse of Starfleet. I wish a ship of this class had gotten its own show!
She is a real Beauty.....Wish they had done allot more episodes with this class. Always was disappointed they never did a series or movie about the voyages of Captain Sulu and the Excelsior. Originally the Excelsior was going to be the replacement for the Enterprise after it was destroyed in Star Trek 3. So we would had seen Kirk and crew take command of her in the next movies. How ever the fans of the refit Enterprise was destroyed in Star Trek 3 the decision was made to bring back the Enterprise refit and just add the -A to the existing model and Kirk and Crew would finish out the series of films with the refit. One can't help but wonder how it would had been if Kirk and his crew had been given the Excelsior and heard these are the voyages of the Starship Excelsior.
The Excelsior class has always been my favorite design, and always will be.
Thank you sooo much! That's exactly what I was searching for!
This is such a great tribute to starfleet's most amazing class. Thank you for putting this together.
You know it sure would have been nice if they could have done a Star Trek series about the voyages and missions of the Enterprise B and her crew and did the same about the Enterprise C and her crew as an in between upto the launching of the Galaxy Class Enterprise D.
🖖😎👍Very cool and very nicely well done and executed very nicely indeed 👌.
Enterprise B = my favorite Excelsior class ship
Excelsior excels at everything! My fav ship
With all the footage of ships that was flying next to the Excelsior Class, I would love to see the production of Intrepid and Sovereign class ships ride right next to the Excelsior.
Great montage. Still my favourite ship design of all time.
That scene of the Enterprise-B in the rift is epic
Even if you’re like me and not a huge fan of the series, I like that the Excelsior is akin to the real world, like how the A-10 Thunderbolt is still in service after 51 years. A well made design is timeless and will never become outdated.
I like that the Excelsior represents that. When technology improved just adding upgrades to its base model such as more engines and better weapons kept it relevant. I played some of the games it was in as a kid and was easily my favorite design.
they should have made a series with this class of ship . next to the constitution class this is another beautiful ship that must of had a great history that needs to be shown .
Sounds like the producers didn't want to produce a story line with using this ship as the primary user.
Always loved this ship
Excelsior class is a beauty!!!
Such Symbolic and universally functional of the Federation power throughout Century perfect design for Diplomatic, Combat, Power Projection Vessel, Scientific, and Exploration ship :) fav ship in ST
I love the shot at 2:40 of the first and third Generation Trans warp star ships side by side🤩
My favorite TOS Enterprise, but I probably like the Constellation class which Picard used to command more.
Thanks for uploading, love the music, and while you re-used some shots, it was still majestic to watch!
I had to search for that voyager scene I didn’t see it on the first watch of the video, luckily I knew which one it was.
Ah, a retrospective of a venerable ship. Now, about that Nebula class . . .
No way man, we need some Defiant class action first!
Love the choice of music! xx
Very cool videos!..... :)
Glad you liked this one :)
So beautiful
Excelsior's deflector looks like a mini eye . Its very cute and lovely
GOOSE BUMPS!!!
one of my fav class of ship
It is worth noting that the USS Fredrickson was named after the late Anthony R. Fredrickson while he was still alive. The production crew named the ship after Anthony in recognition of his contribution to the graphic art and other contributions to the Star Trek francise. See memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/USS_Fredrickson and memory-alpha.wikia.com/wiki/Anthony_Fredrickson.
The shades of night were falling fast,
As through an Alpine village passed
A youth, who bore, 'mid snow and ice,
A banner with the strange device,
Excelsior!
Excelsior was always the most boat-like of star ships!
The only Excelsior Class Starship I like is the USS ENTERPRISE NCC 1701 B!!
My favorite starschip 1- Excelsior class 2- Akira class .
Only 6mins of screen time across the passed forty years?! Criminal.
Agreed. But its still loads more than any other non-hero ship.
@@NightwishRaven999 Some call it a glitch, I call it a feature.
i think its the second best looking class behind soverign 3:19 always like that scene 3:40 good too 4:32 5:57 6:21 not so much
"Damn fine ship if you ask me."
I love thedesign of the Excelsior, even though i pretty much hate the extra features in design of the Enterprise B.
super compilation of a superior design that simply must be used again. where did you get the music? great Job LLAP!
Thanks! Both tracks are from Immediate Music: Trailerhead. Look for the tracks "Age of Discovery" and "An Epic Age".
Could somebody please tell me what is the music used in this video? It is amazing..unmatched..just like the ship itself.
A true game changer
I just wonder what happened to the Enterprise-B.
She was retired, never destroyed.
Is the description meant to be ironic? As it was destroyed about tree fiddy minutes after launch?
What is the Amazing Music you've used it is perfect for the video
To me...Excelsior class is The Starfleet ship....to an old soldier a bit like the Guy in the Centurion Tank who gets his first sight of the New Challenger...or in USA the guy driving an M60 and one of the first Abrams rolls past....Bite my shiny metal ass!!! But they knew they had been surpassed and more.
It's amazing how John Eaves' alteration to the secondary hull improved this ship's clumsy appearance so much. In its original form, it looks like a half-squeezed toothpaste, nothing that compares to the elegance of the Enterprise refit or the original.
Agreed.
The B-52 of Starfleet...
I can never tell if I prefer the original configuration or the Enterprise-B/Lakota configuration. Something about the 3 foot model just doesn't look quite right to me, though; the secondary hull isn't quite right, and isn't weighty enough
I never realized that the Ent B had the same Refit Model as the Lakota
yeah, after Star Trek: Generations, they realized they glued the extras on in such a way that the model would have been damaged if they had tried to take them off.
❤️
So beautiful as long as you follow one rule, never, ever look at her from above!
...or the side.
Why do they (starfleet) use still Excelsior Classes during Picard TNG?
Ufo Alien Austrian News Wahrheit und Dokumente The TV show had a limited budget for new models. They could have just recycled the Enterprise model like they did on the original series or use some of the movie models to introduce a little variety.
U.S.S. Richthofen, STO. Extensively modified Excelsior class in a stark, all red livery befitting her namesake. Although there are stronger ships in the fleet, few can beat her in terms of speed.
I love the video and the music what is the music it's fantastic
I like the excelcior class but never could get past the cooling fins apearance of the neck design.
All thow my 2 favorites are enterprise a refit and enterprise e I always liked the excelsior back in the Kirk days it was a big massive powerful ship and in the Picard days it still held it's own my top 5 are enterprise a refit enterprise e enterprise d excelsior and the star gazer and reliant are tied I can't choose I like them both
Don’t tell me that was any meteor shower.
More Excelsiors than a Stan Lee
I think it’s a little ridiculous how long the excelsior class was in service for
You need to remember one thing. The Excelsior was not an ordinary starship. It was intended to be a super starship and its spaceframe was designed to be a testbed, meaning that it was far more convertible/tweakable/modifiable and versatile than other Federation ships. As such, it became Starfleet's backbone and main cruiser, and was still serving in such a capacity even by the time Voyager had returned home. The role the Excelsiors played in fleet formations (usually flying next to Galaxy class ships) during the Dominion war reinforces its image as a heavy cruiser. The battle between the Lakota & the Defiant was also a clear demonstration of its power.
This is the ship I always do a quick sketch of when I'm bored at work. Been doing that since '92. Just one beautiful ship, also the easiest to sketch as well. My second favorite next to the Galaxy class. All the others are dogs except the Nebula class. Never cared for the Sovereign class, was just too big of a step backwards in aesthetics especially with that dull looking deflector dish. The Intrepid class Voyager was ugly as hell too and far too diminutive to actually hold it's own against ordinary antagonists on its journey home, irregardless of the fancy schmancy bio gel packs and it's dysfunctional crew and lousy screen writing. Would love to see a series with the Enterprise J someday though, just without the stupid Sphere builder fights. Seen enough of that crap in Star Trek: Enterprise which just flat out sucked. Star Trek needs to get back to being the cerebral television series it hasn't been since STTNG went off the air.
Surely you mean "Since DS9 went off the air..."Ds9 easily gives TNG a run for it's money.
My Fantasy Ship Is A Excelsior Class Refit
Time for the cold water. The Terrains figured out Transwarp drive or so we thought. Leave it to Montgomery Scott to pull the plug on it due to saving Spock. I had the solution in mind during the Enterprise-E first encountering the borg and also in the TOS of how to solve this. There is no doubt that Scotty had a Court Marshall coming in absentia now so the cold water. The bureau of Temporal Affairs would have a field day as would P.C. Trekkies blowing the grey matter from there heads. If you want to know, Stay tuned or message me. Bwhahaha!
Uss Enterprise (NX1700) is still the best forever.Oh and if archers NX01 was the first than there were 1699 before the Kirk Enterprise started its duty? Do we know what ships ? Thanks.Live long and....
NX-01 was about 100 years before NCC 1701. It can reach only Warp 5.
@@antoniocarlosruizfernandes9575 Yes but its not Bad. And there must ve been many many more.Til Enterprise 1701.
TRUTH Ets EH3 Earth Habitat 3 No, it's not. She was the first ship in 17th Starfleet's vessel projects. Hence the number 1701.
No, it's not. The Enterprise was the first ship in the 17thStarfleet's vessel projects. Hece
So what’s interesting is that the movies don’t actually portray this quite right, but the excelsior class is surprisingly LONG. The only way to properly experience this is to look at a model. I have the hot wheels version, and it is a pretty long ship compared to the enterpise refit, as well as brings larger. Ironically, while the movie shows it to be larger, the saucer is actually a fair bit smaller compared to the body too, which makes it more proportional, but still surprising. It’s the same thing in the Eaglemoss models too. Even the micro machines release!
The secundary hull is much bigger than the primary hull.
I prefer the necelles to glow Blue only on top instead of along the side 🤷♂️
If only Kirk was given an Excelsior class starship
Jay Giray that always made me wonder why they made the ncc 1701-a an constitution refit type instead of an excelsior class
He did command the Enterprise B for 30 odd seconds before choosing to fix the deflector relays...the rest is history.
But Scotty didn’t like the Excelsior.
Just think of all the space trim he could have shagged with that baby
@@CaptainM792 Yes, it had many fixings to be done before it could be leave the starbase.

Nice video, but I've always thought it was an ugly design.
I love the way that all the ugly "refit" ships vanish after generation
You mean the Excelsior mark II (like the Enterprise-B)? Not sure why you're saying they vanished, the best Excelsior class scenes in DS9 feature the mark II Uss Lakota. You can see the Mark II in battle at 5:06 and onwards.
Would have been miles better with the original audio....
Also known as the "Pregnant Goldfish".
1st time I heard that one.
It's a damn shame they ruined the original Excelsior filming model with the Enterprise B ridiculousness. Little known fact is that the Excelsior was originally going to become the Enterprise due to it being a much easier model to work with. Obviously, it didn't happen.
Music ruined it....keep with the actual scene audio.
"Captain, look! It's the Pride of the Fleet, The USS Bopo-Blop! Behold its prodigious beer gut. Marvel at its accordion neck, and the nacelles which are attached to some kind of pimple. They were obviously lifted from some other ship and stuck on the back of this one. I have actually seen the drawings of bathtubs that this design was derived from."
The Ephemeral Glade. Agree, but NCC 1701 seems to be a saucer with two ballpoint pens at rear too and she was the first and unbeatable.
Constitution > Excelsior.
I think Excelsior Class Ships a bit "fat" 😂😂😂
Has to be one of if not the ugliest SF ship.
Always hated Excelsior class.
That's the spirit. 🙄
