Thank you so much for this tuutotrial! I started making a pair of shorts and was dreading having to put in a zipper since I don't like the look of fully elastic waistbands. So this video is an absolute game changer!
This is such a helpful video! You explained so clearly and demonstrated with a high level of expertise. I used to like fitted shorts with zippers. But they are not comfortable anymore when I get older and my tummy is not flat anymore. Now I buy shorts one size up and add a small piece of elastic in the back to add comfort. That is my way of cheating.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I'm in the planning stages of making "secret pants" and was looking for a tummy flattering way to make them stretchy. This is perfect! (Found your circle shorts, totally going to use your pattern along with the half elastic band!!!)
Great video! I love your video and keep going for the next one. Hope you will have more projects so that you can make more videos. Please consider making a video about the tools you would recommend for sewing. Once again, thank you.

I made these shorts yesterday, excellent outcome!!! Fit is great and I love the waistband technique. Pattern tiles printed and fit together perfectly. Thank you so much ❤
Just came across this tutorial and cannot wait to try it! One question; when doing elastic pants vs semi fitted, does the inseam play any part ? I know some patterns very the rise when cutting; does that matter?
I can’t wait to sew these! I have a question: when you’re sewing the waistband to the rest of the shorts, are you sewing through elastic or just the fabric at that point? PS- my middle name is Anastasia 😊
If you want to convert a pattern that had a full elastic waistband, do you need to adjust the front pattern piece, or just shorten the front part of the waistband?
Hi Anastasia, I'd like to add elastic to the back of pants with a flat front.and zipper. If I straighten the side seam on the back pattern then the back side seam will no longer match the side seam on the front pattern. The shape will also be different. I'm a beginner and I'd like to know how would you sew the front and back side seams after making the back wider? Thank you.
@@SewAnastasia question, Easy fix i did on a shirred band that was worn out. I removed the old elastic, sewed it normal then added small bands in the channels. Can you do another video on something like that? Good when you only have scraps of narrower elastic and dont wanna shirr
@@Baohbun what do you mean? I don’t understand. To get your size measure your waist & hips & find your size on the chart then cut that size out. If you are 2 different sizes you can grade the pattern. I hope that helps.
Quick question. How is it that you are able to sew rows of straight stitches on top of the elastic, without them popping out? I am a new sewer and I thought you couldn’t see straight stitch on stretchy things, such as elastic. Also does that first stitch you do, on the waistband, go through just the two layers of fabric, or through the fabric and the elastic? Thanks!
The first few stitches go through all the layers. Since there is a stretchy elastic & non stretch fabric you can use the straight stitch. It’s holding the fabric to the elastic. Also since it’s stretched out when sewing it pops back into place.
Is it possible to make shorts with an elastic waistband that ALSO zip up in the back so you can step into them and they still fit over your hips? I’m making a costume that has one of those superhero undies that go over everything lol! And the fabric doesn’t have much stretch, but I need to use it so it matches the cape. 😖
Good question! Wondering the same! My initial thought is if the hemline stays the same, and everything below the hip line stays the same, the fullness of the skirt part will still be the original balanced amount.

I know that this is my OCD talking, and I know that these shorts are just for demonstration along with a previous gingham dress, but is it too much to ask that the checks match at the seams? If you’re not going to do that then use a solid. I’m just sayin’ 😊 A nice linen like…. Twill 😎
With the way that sewing patterns curve at the seams to fit out bodies and the way that fabrics move and stretch/shrink that is nearly impossible to do 😂
I like the way you play when teaching.

Exactly what I was looking for! ❤ I just wonder if you have alternative solutions for folks who don't own sergers :'(
You can always use a zigzag stitch in lieu of a serger!
I’ve been searching for ages for a tutorial on how to do a half elastic waist with a side zip 😩
Hope this video helps. It’s the same but you just add a zipper at the side seam.

They need to be the same length but they do not necessarily have to be the same shape if that helps.

Yes and side seam zipper is correct.

How wide is the elastic
I believe it was 2 inches.
