Agreed, I had a suriname years ago before Google and youtube and he was aggressive as hell. I've had alot of reptiles over the years and have a few boas now. I was looking into another one but after watching Brian's video on true red tails, I've decided nahh I dont want one again🤣
Not that there's a problem with that- balls are just less active in general than boas. I know a lot of boa people are anti-ball python, but definitely not me! I think balls are cool animals that have a lot of great qualities; I just don't keep any.
I got a beautiful little BCC last month. He's a Sharp Albino Motley and was a little bit evil in his rack but now that he's home he's so chill and friendly ! I love him so much.
assessments are pretty spot on. still, bci's can also be intimidating because of there movement and body language. Agree with you that true red tails are advance just like rainbow boa's. AS WITH ALL SNAKES, these are living things that cant be stuck in a closet after your bored. they require commitment for many years.
definitely a video for people like me.(: a lot of people will be mesmerized with the beauty of bcc but I realized that every boa is beautiful in their own way. that's why I'm planning to have the best boa for a beginner like me. I really learned a lot about boas from this channel.(: great video and beautiful boas as always sir!
Dude, you remind me of my high school teacher. The guy really loved snakes he gave me a baby Columbian Red Tail at graduation. I still have her to this day! I instantly subscribed! Great video!
I just got my first boa, a BCI sold as a "Central American Dwarf" (y'know, that famous, super specific locale of Central America), so he could be any and/or all of the island dwarf locales bred together into a hobby form. The dame was 5 feet and the sire was just under 4, so I'm hoping for around 4 (fingers crossed for 3.75) on him, because that's a nice, manageable length to work with to build a comfortable, attractive enclosure. So far, he's been a spring with teeth, as all babies are before being socialized, but in less than a week of gentle handling for 5 minutes a day, he's gone from Boicus Destroyer of Hands to just a little nervous, occasionally a bit nippy, and slowly starting to explore his environment. His baby bin cost me a grand total of $20 to make from a plastic bin I got at Hobby Lobby, some coconut shell hides, a dowel rod I put through the middle for him to climb over as enrichment (he loves that dowel), a water dish made from a chic-fil-a chicken wrap lid (big and deep enough for him to soak, and set right over the heat mat so it stays reasonably warm), and some basic reptile soil. Honestly, I don't think enough attention is paid in the reptile world to the dwarf BCI. They're all the fun and joy of the full sized animals without the space commitment necessary for a 14 foot female BCC.
Thanks for sharing. The dwarf boas are great. But true red tails that are 14 feet long are probably less than one in a million. Most of mine are 6-8 feet as adults.
Found your channel from a Wickens video where he called you the go to for boa info. I appreciate the straight forward approach! Thanks for the great content.
I got my first normal, common, garden variety, columbian red-tail type boa from some common, garden variety hippies on a houseboat in Sausalito for $20.00 in 1968.
Just wanted to say your channel has really helped me! I took In a guys common boa from Craigslist and I’m glad I did it was in a tiny like 30 gallon tank for a 4.5 ft snake and he has trouble breathing I think because he was bitten by a rat on the nose and so far I got him a bigger tank and it’s a beautiful enclosure.
Just put the money down on a Nicaraguan Boa (dwarf boa) as my first boa. I do have other snakes so I'm not a total beginner but I'm excited as boas are my favorite snakes and I've wanted one for a long time.
My first boa is a Suriname Red Tail boa. He's almost 2 years old and a little over 3 ft long. He eats every 2 weeks. But I do agree with Brian that they are not beginner level snakes. I was lucky to how the patience, common sense, and some snake raising experience.
I have a common Columbian imperator, had him 5 years from a hatchling and I can confirm they are a great snake! I have other species but I truly think that to handle they are just the right level of interactivity and placidity.. more challenging than a ball python but less intense than a retic .. plus even as a non-morph they are stunning in patten and iridescence.. not a good first snake for a child but a great choice for an adult for sure ❤
Hardly any time for YT these days but this one is a must! Rather happy with my boa mix girl hog/sur. Hardiness and beauty combined with even color changes and a bright red tail. A friend of mine lost her jungle boa prematurely, apparently this not too uncommon with these types of boas. Have you ever heard of this phenomenon and can mb emphasize on it? Thanks for tuning in. The jungles I've had have been perfectly healthy, but many people have had helath issues with super jungles that die at a young age.
So happy I found your channel! I’ve been looking into what type of snake I want for over a year now and you’ve really showcased some breeds of boa I haven’t seen before! Thanks! I really want a boa but assumed they were all too large.
I was used to my calm Ball Python but wanted to check out a Redtail Boa. I was at a pet store and opened the lid and at least 12 crawled up and OUT before I could even say HELP! They were FAST! So unexpected! I now know better.
Very good information on the true Suriname Bcc and why it is so complex to get one ,,,,, that would be a headache for a keeper ' ,,, your other boas are wonderful mannnnn. " i do love the hard squeezers tho "
Enjoyed the video. Have to say I disagree with calling BI's "Redtails" though. Calling them that calls into question what type of species that the boa happens to be. Same as with dogs, using a pure bred term with a mutt is just deceptive. Doesn't mean it is any less of an animal, just specifies it's genetics. Which is important for breeding, not for general pet keeping though. Just my 2 cents.
What's your verdict on a common boa / BCI as a first snake? I had wanted a Ball Python for a few years now but lately have totally gone all the way over to the side of getting a boa. I'm that guy - I really like the size. Impressive without being too large. Then there is that gorgeous head shape, more active behavior, much better feeding etc. I feel like if I get a BP now I will just wish it was a Boa and that's not fair to the snake at all. In any case this isn't something I plan to do for probably at least a year. I want to be as prepared as a first time owner can be, not doing anything without a plan on a whim. Of all the channels on YT you seem to have by far the most practical/utilitarian for the absolute best care of the animals themselves. I've seen your boa feeding schedule/guide and 100% already know that's the way I'll go with a baby common boa whenever I get one. Thank you so much! I have definitely subbed!
If you want a boa, go for it! Just make sure you do your research and have a great set up for it, understand it's husbandry requirements, and are prepared to provide it all the care it needs.
Thanks for these videos, again 🥳🌙 I have a lovely corn snake, a sweet ball python and a semi-sassy cali-king. I’ve been doing a lot of research on localities and you’re definitely the go-to. I just really adore them but also wouldn’t want a super massive snake that I couldn’t adequately handle. I’m planning for next summer after I do my vampire crab enclosure. Fingers crossed 🤞
Sand boas are BY FAR the easiest snakes to own for beginners. They are cheap, can live in 20 gallon tanks as adults, and are easy to hold. They also don't require high humidity so you can keep them in a dry climate and not worry about misters or anything.
Thank you for your helpful videos i no you have made some videos with crawl Cray but there is not much about theses beautiful snakes Brian you ar the Don and main man when it comes to boas it would be great If u can make a little video with bringing up a island or locality boa from a baby or young adult any more information will be helpful i have watched all Ur videos thank Brian appreciate your time and advice and graitfull for Ur information best wishes good health
You saying that people call the Common Boa a "Red tail boa" incorrectly brought the biggest smile to my face. Every. Single. Reptile shop in the southern US STILL calls them this. It's so annoying
IMO I'm actually looking for a BCI that will grow around 8ft or more because if I was looking for an boa that would grow only around 5ft I'd just stick with ball pythons lol I don't want a boa to be a tiny snake as a pet. It's very hard and every time I ask breeders selling BCI's morphs it's always an different answer when I ask how big they can get
I’ll have you know that if you interact with your ball python enough, they WILL interact with you to the point they will sometimes even find ways to let you know they want to be taken out
I would love to see you do a video on the hog Island boa natural morph I recently acquired one and it’s a purebred hog Island but it’s got all kinds of pink and red and the sides in the teal is bright yellow spots but I’ve seen different versions of the hog Island boa I seen a real light ones gray dark ones and the one I have and it’s a locality boa I would love to hear you explain how they go from light dark and beautiful yellow on the tail and read on the site is this the only versions of them I would love to see you do a video.

Hi Brian. My baby boa seems to get hissy, doesn't want to be handled, gets defensive before sheding. Other than this she is very calm, easy to handle. Any advice
Since I am only getting one. I got a Guyana. I figure, with having a few Ball Pythons, that it couldn't be so vastly different. Going to get a custom cage and set up for bioactive. Probably a 5x2x2 or 6x2x2
Hi Brian! I just got a new almost 5 foot male Imperator Boa, I have two other snakes a ball python and a Kenyan sand boa. When I was a little younger I used to help my friend with his Burmese python‘s and his large reticulated pythons. I’m new to the species and I’m wondering what is the best way to bring him out of His enclosure to interact. I just got home so I’m wondering should I try to feed him and give him a few days to settle in? Thanks 🙂
Hey I just left a comment and I wanted to add a question would you be willing to help me? I just wanted you to look at some pictures of his injury he got while he was with his old owner
Hey Brian !! New too the channel , Great content ! I have a hypo boa and was wondering if u kno how too tell is it’s the salmon line or orange tail ? Is there any way too tell ?
Hi Brian - love all your videos. Seriously educational. I have a 4x2x2 bioactive pvc enclosure. Was thinking of getting a ball python but I really like boas. Do you think that size is adequate for a male common boa ( Columbia boa)? Or, should I stick with the ball python unless I can get a larger enclosure? Thanks for any advice.
@@BrianBoas thanks so much Brian for getting back to me. Do you have any that will come up available in the next month? Ones that might fit the bill? Thanks!
Is it ok to breed boas if they are brother and sister or grandpa and granddaughter? Is it better to keep strains strong or better to mix it up with boas? I love this channel!!!
Not that there's a problem with a pet rock- balls are just less active in general than boas. I know a lot of boa people are anti-ball python, but definitely not me! I think balls are cool animals that have a lot of great qualities; I just don't keep any.
Bco are pretty easy to keep and can be ok as a first boa provided you do your background research and provide the right husbandry. I think the high price tag may be a bit prohibitive for most beginners, though...
@@BrianBoas As I live in the UK, locality boas are incredibly hard to come by. I don't think the added price would be to much of an issue for me as I think they are well worth the money. I would like to get one as a baby so I can work up to the larger size, and so I can work with the snake to ensure that I can tame it down. I would go to a reptile show to have a look at what people might have, but the current climate isn't exactly the best for those at the moment. I guess I will have to keep an ear to the ground and see if there are any bco breeders here. Breeding them would be a cool project for myself in the distant future as they are so rare
Thanks for the suggestion! This video covers some of the reasons why I'm into boas: ua-cam.com/video/lE5-zn4zX8M/v-deo.html I'm also planning a video on my background and early boa experience, so please stay tuned!
Brian Boas amazing , keep doing these videos I really enjoy I’ve been into snakes since I was child , I recently just got into boas because of your channel !
@@BrianBoas Thank you for the reply. I was just wondering where you got your pricing information. I am still going to get a kahl/hypo sunglow regardless of price. I just wanted to know if maybe there was somewhere else I should be looking besides morphmarket and local reptile shows.
@@BrianBoas Oh no I just researched its not that color its the same as yours actually. I think the retailer said it had some traits of albino in it I guess I have no idea.. I wish I could send you a picture of it so I could know for sure. lol
@@BrianBoas I've always wanted a Peruvian long tail boa what that's why I was asking if they make good beginner pets and you said possible so I might consider them
Several hundred dollars in food per year sounds a bit high. If you average 12 very large rats per year, at $6/rat that's only $72. Bump it up to $102 for $30 shipping. (And they're only $4.75/rat on Cold Blooded Café, which I've heard recommended for high quality.)
Ok, noted, but I think you're splitting hairs. My point was that the yearly maintenance costs (food, supplies, vet visits, etc.) are likley to be higher than the purchase price of an inexpensive boa.
@@BrianBoas that's true, it's common to see Boas and Phytons under 100$ (during reptile expo) and a vet visit it's about 100/150$ where i live (Northern Italy). And I usually take my pet to the vet every 6 months.
@@BrianBoas I'm sorry, I didn't mean to contradict your bigger point that cheaping out isn't sensible. To me the most obvious reason for that is that a boa is a 30 year commitment. Considered on that basis, quality just seems obviously worth up-front investment, to me. I was more thinking if it from the angle of several hundred dollars a year in food (if the rats don't have gold foil applied to them) makes it sound like they eat a ton of food - which, as you have pointed out more than once, would be bad for them.
Many Bci common boas can get over seven feet. Is it not possible to predict the exact size of a given boa at maturity, only a general size range based on type of boa and size of parents (if known).
@@BrianBoas may I just say I ABSOLUTELY adore your specimens. Just breath taking! What do you think about hog island boas as a beginner boa? That was my first boa and she was a rescue? What would you consider a good intermediate boa?
Top boa channel out there!

I wouldn't put a boa longer than about 5 feet around my neck, and only if it's non aggressive.
I’ve been curious about sand boas and the boas native to the United States. How do they compare for a first time boa owner?
I have but kept these before, but can be suitable for beginners if you do your research on their needs.
Very great information once again !
Thanks, glad you think so!
What is your advice for Central American Boas?
General care is pretty much the same for any boa
Great Video, new sub. Thanks
Thanks!
Great upload bud.
Thanks!
Ball Python = Pet Rock. 🤣 All of mine are semi-active. Only one pet rock, but she even crawls around a bit.
Not that there's a problem with a pet rock- balls are just less active in general than boas. I know a lot of boa people are anti-ball python, but definitely not me! I think balls are cool animals that have a lot of great qualities; I just don't keep any.
I love all snakes. I wish I had unlimited space and funds....oh and time.
AWESOME video! thanks!
Glad you liked it!
Do you have a green emmerald tree boa as a pet.
PLEASE show it if you have.
No I do not
great video, very informative 🫡
Glad it was helpful!
What about a green emmerald tree boa as a first pet
Not a good idea, this is a more challenging species from what I've read.
I see so many monster female columbians but yours look manageable
Yes they are!
You don’t let them hang off your shoulders?
Not usually
I doubt I would ever find one here, but how would rate an Argentine boa as a starter snake?
Breeding them would be a cool project for myself in the distant future as they are so rare
do you have a video on how you got into boas ? If not you should ! !!!
Thanks for the suggestion! This video covers some of the reasons why I'm into boas: ua-cam.com/video/lE5-zn4zX8M/v-deo.html
I'm also planning a video on my background and early boa experience, so please stay tuned!
Brian Boas amazing , keep doing these videos I really enjoy I’ve been into snakes since I was child , I recently just got into boas because of your channel !
How many times do a boa shed in a 12 month period.
Depends, can be anywhere from 4-8 or so
Where do I find prices like this? I have been looking on morphmarket and for a Kahl Albino Hypo Sunglow I see them starting at 450 and go up to 900
Just look for a "normal" common boa if you want one that is less expensive.
@@BrianBoas Thank you for the reply. I was just wondering where you got your pricing information. I am still going to get a kahl/hypo sunglow regardless of price. I just wanted to know if maybe there was somewhere else I should be looking besides morphmarket and local reptile shows.
Where can I get a Suriname red tailed boa? I have the have the volume down bc it's 3 am so I couldn't hear if he said where it was
Try the online reptile classifieds (Fauna classifieds, kingsnake.com, morphmarket)
@@BrianBoas Ok, thank you!
Does the full grown boa (red tail) bites hurt?
Yes
Yea I just got my first one just like that one! The guy at the shop said she was an Albino BCC. So I guess I have a true red tail?
No if you have an albino it’s not a Bcc it’s a Bi
@@BrianBoas Im going to have to look that up. Thanks bro
@@BrianBoas Oh no I just researched its not that color its the same as yours actually. I think the retailer said it had some traits of albino in it I guess I have no idea.. I wish I could send you a picture of it so I could know for sure. lol
had one for 18 years.......!!
Congratulations!
Would you say that a Peruvian long tail boa it's a good beginner pet boa
Possibly if you are careful to do your research and provide ideal husbandry
@@BrianBoas I've always wanted a Peruvian long tail boa what that's why I was asking if they make good beginner pets and you said possible so I might consider them
@@sammymay5281 Ok, best of luck!
Who are some of the best breeders?
How big do pet red tail boas get??
Typically 5-9 feet
@@snakkosss5380 Yes, where I live, a basic vet checkup is around $100, a lot more if you need any testing or serious treatments...
@@MissingTheMark Ok, no problem!
Is the common boa the same as a Central American boa?
Common boas are Boa imperator, which ranges from Mexico through Central America into northwest South America.
Snakes are not aggressive they are defensive
Would you be able to tell me which one I have
Maybe; post a pic or a link to a pic
@@BrianBoas how to I post a pic on here lol
Do you ever have Boas Around the $100 price point?
No but there are plenty around that price on the online reptile classifieds sites
Thanks. Is there a couple sites you like or can recommend?
Fauna classifieds, kingsnake.com and morph market are the biggest three
@@BrianBoas thanks my friend. You’re the GOAT... keep the informational videos coming. I love them and haven’t missed one
Hey man if this boa under 7ft at 10yrs?
What boa? There are a lot of boas that will never get to 7 feet long.
@@BrianBoas um bci
@@BrianBoas and also if i follow your feeding schedule so how long will my boa get when hes 10yrs?
Many Bci common boas can get over seven feet. Is it not possible to predict the exact size of a given boa at maturity, only a general size range based on type of boa and size of parents (if known).
Love this guy's videos but he gives me Dwight schrute vibes 🤣🤣🤣
Who is Dwight Schrute?
He's a character from a show called The Office
33rd comment. Love your videos!!!
Yay! Thank you!
@@BrianBoas may I just say I ABSOLUTELY adore your specimens. Just breath taking! What do you think about hog island boas as a beginner boa? That was my first boa and she was a rescue? What would you consider a good intermediate boa?
@@zacharylipke9488 As long as one does his or her homework and provides the proper husbandry, a Hog Island boa could be a great beginner boa.
