Brian , you're one of the few breeders who recommends boas as a beginner snake. My ball pythons are great but knowing what I know now I'd get a juvenile boa and raise it. They seem to have a lot more personality.
I'm guessing the other breeders you refer to don't actually breed boas? ;) The truth is that a lot of snakes, including many boas, can be kept by beginners provided they do their research before getting the snake and provide the optimal husbandry. That being said, there are quite a few people out there who aren't responsible enough to own any animal, no matter how simple...
I have one of each! Both are very docile, but my ball python isn’t the typical “pet rock” that they are known to be. He never stops moving around when being handled. It’s quite an activity, you can’t just hold him and do something else at the same time. My boa, however, (still just a year old) will just anchor himself onto my hand and just sit with me. Much easier to hold him, and watch a movie or something. I love and am happy to have them both 🥰
I have 12 bp’s non are pet rocks. Lol. I have one boa and he is definitely my favorite snake to interact with. Smart as can be. If I had to do it all over again. I would have got all boas
I just have a 7 month old female bci and a 2 year old ball python. But I think if I could only have one it would be my boa. What amazing boas you have mate 👍
I am going to be arrogant Brian, Boa Constrictor any day hands down. I have kept both, I find Ball pythons are harder to feed and can be prone to hunger strikes. I had Boa constrictors that have never refused a meal in their lifetime. Boa Constrictors are more attractive in my opinion.
Thanks! The channel is still relatively new (15 months old) so hopefully the growth rate will increase soon. Please have your friends and friends of friends subscribe!
I literally gave my ball python back to the breeder because it quit eating and I got worried. Now I know better 4 years later with boa but my boa rarely ever refuses to eat lol. Great video!
Personally, I think boa constrictors are the most satisfying to keep. It is true that they require more space but they reach what for me is the right compromise in terms of size. That said, I love all my snakes.
I too, had to contend with this topic as well. So my answer was to own both I have 3 boas and 3 ball pythons. I'm not a breeder just somebody who enjoys keeping them. I have learned alot concerning both animals.
What an informative video and great comparison! Wish I found this channel before getting my first snake. Everyone else strongly recommended a ball python as a beginner snake so I went with that. However since we're staying at home so much more these days, I sometimes wish I had gone with a more interactive boa that doesn't hide 80% of the time 😰looks like I'm keeping a pet enclosure haha
I have a male and a female Ball Python who are both 17 years old. Also a retired breeder male who is about 8. They are not pet rock and each has a fantastic personality. My 4 boas are quite delightful, especially my male Dwarf who has a huge macho complex. love them all.
I have a few boas who might qualify as "pet rocks" and I actually like their personalities! It's nice to take them out and just have them hang out with me motionless rather than try to escape!
Had tons of both. Happy and healthy is what matters. Both really are awesome animals. I do not feel there is a winner. Here At ball brothers pythons we love them both as much as we possibly could!. In the end I feel its all a matter of opinion and I wish you all luck with whatever you choose:) Have a great day :) Your a smart guy Brian and agree on the tie:)
While it is true that ball pythons spend time in burrows, they also like to climb, as keepers who provide them with branches have found. Also, research on these animals has shown that their prey in the wild includes a fair proportion of birds. I have never kept a ball python, but for me, boa constrictors are some of the most amazing snakes, and some of them are, by reptilian standards, very clever.
Awesome video👍😁👍 and accurate points regarding both types of snakes I enjoyed watching 😊 I have boas and ball pythons most of the boas are rescues tho cause people get scared of them as they grow up too (note: rescuing can be deadly to home collections have a plan or seperate building from main collections speaking from a professional perspective )
I have both but first I will say, you are right on in your knowledge. I will say that Boas seem to have a more inquisitve and interactive behavior. I surmised this might be because of the regions they descend from. For example ball pythons descend from a region where there are a lot of predators and not so much for Boas like I have, like a Hog Island. So maybe they developed different skills based on their regions. I appreciate both species but I personally I have to say Boas are far more interactive. I don't want to say more intelligent than ball pythons but they seem to even recogonize their owners. I think both can be a joy to own but when you have seen both behaviors, I find the Boa to be much more interesting in their behaviors in my humble opinion and also far more impressive in their body appearance in my same humble opinion. Yes you can get different morphs ball pythons but when you see and exerience a boa its another realm,
Have both and enjoy both but boas are my favorites due to behavior and the ease of feeding. Can't overstate how big of a deal ball python food refusal is. When you feed f/t, it can be an expensive issue also. I've just learned to thaw less feeders than I have snakes knowing that at least 1-2 of my ball pythons will choose not to eat any given feeding night.
Just FYI, I believe Jay Brewer is now up to nearly 300 retic morph types. Checkout his latest UA-cam for that detail. So that would put the ball pythons in 2nd place unless their number of morph types has grown. Keep the great vids coming Brian, I rarely miss them unless I'm already very familiar with the subject matter. I really need to visit Jay's facility again, I live only 4 miles away from it.
Hi Brian, thanks for the great video, I’m a new snake owner and I have a ball python, and although I love her, she is a pain to feed. I’m looking into getting a Boa but I want. “Small” one , like a ball python size. Which one would you recommend?
I got a Ball Python and a Boa at about the same time. If the Ball ever decides to not eat, no rodents will go to waste. Guaranteed. Which one do I like better? I love all my snakes equally. 😁
Great points and I love your points about boa breeding vs ball python breed. I have never even thought about the struggle with boa breeding , even though they have live births.
Love the vid and info. Can you discuss or perhaps touch on the orangasm line and its visual effects. Or can you refer me to some info about it. I cant find much at all.
I think the boa constrictor is a very elegant snake if we look at the shape of its head & body. Actually I want to keep a Boa Constrictor but I'm a bit afraid of snakes & don't know the details of snake characters. Even though I've kept other reptiles with lizards for years and often get bitten by adult male iguanas during the breeding season. I hope I can get rid of my fear of snakes 😂 Thank you for your hardwork, your UA-cam channel help me a lot for knowing about Boa Constrictor 🙏
Thanks for your kind feedback! I agree that boas are a very elegant reptile and that is part of their appeal to me. Many are also very docile are rarely if ever bite, so hopefully you can overcome your fear.
I've kept many different snakes over the decades boas, ball blood retics burmese green tree pythons, yellow&green anaconda, etc and i could say with certanty boas are the best pet snake! With burmese python a close second if you don't mind the size. I've had only 1 yellow anaconda so i can't say this for all others but she was very well behaved (as long as he have a big enough water container to soak which she does most of the time) and eats like a boa, very manageable size too. Can't say the same about the green anacondas 😂. Thank's for the awesome videos tho! Keep em coming 👍
What is your opinion on rosy boas? I read that they are less inclined to bite, more than other placid species. They also follow the boa code and are good eaters.
I had a ball python years ago. He was a good boy. Once he was acclimated and tame which was quick, he liked to come out and just chill with people. They are lap snakes. My Boa goes into curious mode. He crawls all over you, smelling every inch of you then looks for another human to explore. Boas are definitely more active. Do you want a snake that chills and watches TV with you or a snake that becomes the entertainment. You become a tree for the Boa to play on.
Hey Brian, do you happen to know who the main staple breeders are for pure Hog Island Boas? I've wanted one for some time and am just curious as to who to get in touch with, or who you'd recommend. Obviously I could look at Morph Market and stuff too, but I'm more curious if there are ones you specifically would choose for that locality.
Why have a favorite when you can keep both! The worst thing about Ball pythons is when they go off feed. The potential waste of a thawed rat used to drive me nuts. Now that I have my boas it's no problem. I offer to the BPs first (I only have two) and if they don't take it, I know who will.
